the heart .

לֵ֤ב

חֲכָמִים֙

ḥă·ḵā·mîm

of the wise

בְּבֵ֣ית

bə·ḇêṯ

[is] in the house

– אֵ֔בֶל

’ê·ḇel,

of mourning –

וְלֵ֥ב

wə·lêḇ

but the heart

כְּסִילִ֖ים

kə·sî·lîm

בְּבֵ֥ית

bə·ḇêṯ

[is] in the house

. שִׂמְחָֽה׃

śim·ḥāh.

of mirth .

ט֕וֹב

[it is] better

לִשְׁמֹ֖עַ

liš·mō·a‘

גַּעֲרַ֣ת

ga·‘ă·raṯ

､ חָכָ֑ם

ḥā·ḵām;

of the wise ､

מֵאִ֕ישׁ

שֹׁמֵ֖עַ

שִׁ֥יר

an inheritance –

לְרֹאֵ֥י

lə·rō·’ê

to those who see

. הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃

haš·šā·meš.

the sun .

כִּ֛י

､ בְּצֵ֥ל

bə·ṣêl

[is] a defense ､

הַֽחָכְמָ֖ה

ha·ḥā·ḵə·māh

､ בְּצֵ֣ל

bə·ṣêl

[is] a defense ､

הַכָּ֑סֶף

hak·kā·sep̄;

[as] money

וְיִתְר֣וֹן

wə·yiṯ·rō·wn

but the excellence

דַּ֔עַת

da·‘aṯ,

of knowledge [is]

הַֽחָכְמָ֖ה

ha·ḥā·ḵə·māh

תְּחַיֶּ֥ה

tə·ḥay·yeh

. בְעָלֶֽיהָ׃

ḇə·‘ā·le·hā.

to those who have it .

רְאֵ֖ה

אֶת־

מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה

ma·‘ă·śêh

the work

､ הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים

hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm;

of God ､

כִּ֣י

､ לְתַקֵּ֔ן

make straight ､

אֵ֖ת

He has made crooked ؟

בְּי֤וֹם

in the day

טוֹבָה֙

דִּבְרַ֗ת

so that nothing

יִמְצָ֧א

הָֽאָדָ֛ם

אַחֲרָ֖יו

’a·ḥă·rāw

[that will come] after him

. מְאֽוּמָה׃

mə·’ū·māh.

Limits of Human Wisdom

אֶת־

בִּימֵ֣י

– הֶבְלִ֑י

heḇ·lî;

of my vanity –

יֵ֤שׁ

yêš

צַדִּיק֙

ṣad·dîq

אֹבֵ֣ד

’ō·ḇêḏ

､ בְּצִדְק֔וֹ

bə·ṣiḏ·qōw,

in his righteousness ､

וְיֵ֣שׁ

wə·yêš

and there is

רָשָׁ֔ע

rā·šā‘,

מַאֲרִ֖יךְ

ma·’ă·rîḵ

who prolongs [life]

. בְּרָעָתֽוֹ׃

bə·rā·‘ā·ṯōw.

in his wickedness .

אַל־

’al-

Not

תְּהִ֤י

צַדִּיק֙

ṣad·dîq

– הַרְבֵּ֔ה

har·bêh,

וְאַל־

wə·’al-

תִּתְחַכַּ֖ם

tiṯ·ḥak·kam

– יוֹתֵ֑ר

לָ֖מָּה

lām·māh

؟ תִּשּׁוֹמֵֽם׃

tiš·šō·w·mêm.

should you destroy yourself ؟

אַל־

､ תִּרְשַׁ֥ע

do be wicked ､

הַרְבֵּ֖ה

וְאַל־

wə·’al-

תְּהִ֣י

miz·zeh

from this [one]

– יָדֶ֑ךָ

yā·ḏe·ḵā;

כִּֽי־

יְרֵ֥א

אֱלֹהִ֖ים

יֵצֵ֥א

with

. כֻּלָּֽם׃

kul·lām.

הַֽחָכְמָ֖ה

ha·ḥā·ḵə·māh

תָּעֹ֣ז

לֶחָכָ֑ם

le·ḥā·ḵām;

the wise

מֵֽעֲשָׂרָה֙

mê·‘ă·śā·rāh

שַׁלִּיטִ֔ים

šal·lî·ṭîm,

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

הָי֖וּ

. בָּעִֽיר׃

bā·‘îr.

of the city .

on earth ､

good ､

וְלֹ֥א

wə·lō

and not

. יֶחֱטָֽא׃

ye·ḥĕ·ṭā.

לְכָל־

הַדְּבָרִים֙

had·də·ḇā·rîm

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

– יְדַבֵּ֔רוּ

yə·ḏab·bê·rū,

אַל־

תִּתֵּ֖ן

לִבֶּ֑ךָ

by wisdom ､

､ אָמַ֣רְתִּי

’ā·mar·tî

I said ､

– אֶחְכָּ֔מָה

’eḥ·kā·māh,

I will be wise –

וְהִ֖יא

wə·hî

but it [was]

רְחוֹקָ֥ה

rə·ḥō·w·qāh

. מִמֶּֽנִּי׃

mim·men·nî.

from me .

､ רָח֖וֹק

rā·ḥō·wq

מַה־

mah-

שֶּׁהָיָ֑ה

še·hā·yāh;

is

וְעָמֹ֥ק ׀

wə·‘ā·mōq

and exceedingly

､ עָמֹ֖ק

‘ā·mōq

deep ､

מִ֥י

mî

؟ יִמְצָאֶֽנּוּ׃

yim·ṣā·’en·nū.

can find it out ؟

סַבּ֨וֹתִֽי

sab·bō·w·ṯî

אֲנִ֤י

’ă·nî

I

וְלִבִּי֙

wə·lib·bî

and my heart

､ לָדַ֣עַת

lā·ḏa·‘aṯ

to know ､

､ וְלָת֔וּר

wə·lā·ṯūr,

and to search ､

וּבַקֵּ֥שׁ

ū·ḇaq·qêš

､ חָכְמָ֖ה

ḥāḵ·māh

וְחֶשְׁבּ֑וֹן

wə·ḥeš·bō·wn;

and the reason [of things]

וְלָדַ֙עַת֙

wə·lā·ḏa·‘aṯ

and to know

רֶ֣שַׁע

re·ša‘

､ כֶּ֔סֶל

ke·sel,

of folly ､

וְהַסִּכְל֖וּת

wə·has·siḵ·lūṯ

and Even of foolishness

. הוֹלֵלֽוֹת׃

hō·w·lê·lō·wṯ.

[and] madness .

וּמוֹצֶ֨א

ū·mō·w·ṣe

And find

אֲנִ֜י

’ă·nî

I

מַ֣ר

mar

מִמָּ֗וֶת

mim·mā·weṯ,

אֶת־

’eṯ-

､ הָֽאִשָּׁה֙

hā·’iš·šāh

the woman ､

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

הִ֨יא

hî

is

מְצוֹדִ֧ים

mə·ṣō·w·ḏîm

､ וַחֲרָמִ֛ים

wa·ḥă·rā·mîm

and nets ､

לִבָּ֖הּ

lib·bāh

. אֲסוּרִ֣ים

’ă·sū·rîm

יָדֶ֑יהָ

yā·ḏe·hā;

ט֞וֹב

לִפְנֵ֤י

lip̄·nê

-

הָאֱלֹהִים֙

hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm

יִמָּלֵ֣ט

yim·mā·lêṭ

מִמֶּ֔נָּה

mim·men·nāh,

וְחוֹטֵ֖א

wə·ḥō·w·ṭê

but the sinner

יִלָּ֥כֶד

yil·lā·ḵeḏ

shall be trapped

. בָּֽהּ׃

bāh.

､ רְאֵה֙

Here is ､

זֶ֣ה

､ מָצָ֔אתִי

mā·ṣā·ṯî,

I have found ､

אָמְרָ֖ה

’ā·mə·rāh

､ קֹהֶ֑לֶת

qō·he·leṯ;

the Teacher ､

אַחַ֥ת

’a·ḥaṯ

[Adding] one [thing]

､ לְאַחַ֖ת

lə·’a·ḥaṯ

to the [other] one ､

לִמְצֹ֥א

lim·ṣō

､ חֶשְׁבּֽוֹן׃

ḥeš·bō·wn.

the reason ､

אֲשֶׁ֛ר

’ă·šer

עוֹד־

‘ō·wḏ-

､ בִּקְשָׁ֥ה

biq·šāh

נַפְשִׁ֖י

nap̄·šî

– וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

but cannot –

מָצָ֑אתִי

mā·ṣā·ṯî;

אָדָ֞ם

’ā·ḏām

אֶחָ֤ד

’e·ḥāḏ

מֵאֶ֙לֶף֙

mê·’e·lep̄

among a thousand

– מָצָ֔אתִי

mā·ṣā·ṯî,

I have found –

וְאִשָּׁ֥ה

wə·’iš·šāh

but a woman

בְכָל־

ḇə·ḵāl-

אֵ֖לֶּה

’êl·leh

לֹ֥א

lō

not

. מָצָֽאתִי׃

mā·ṣā·ṯî.

לְבַד֙

lə·ḇaḏ

､ רְאֵה־

rə·’êh-

זֶ֣ה

zeh

､ מָצָ֔אתִי

mā·ṣā·ṯî,

I have found ､

אֲשֶׁ֨ר

’ă·šer

עָשָׂ֧ה

‘ā·śāh

הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים

hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הָאָדָ֖ם

hā·’ā·ḏām

– יָשָׁ֑ר

yā·šār;

וְהֵ֥מָּה

wə·hêm·māh

but they

בִקְשׁ֖וּ

ḇiq·šū

have sought out

חִשְּׁבֹנ֥וֹת

ḥiš·šə·ḇō·nō·wṯ

. רַבִּֽים׃

rab·bîm.
