Laws for Servants

וְאֵ֙לֶּה֙

wə·’êl·leh

And these [are]

הַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֔ים

ham·miš·pā·ṭîm,

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

תָּשִׂ֖ים

tā·śîm

. לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃

lip̄·nê·hem.

כִּ֤י

kî

If

תִקְנֶה֙

ṯiq·neh

עֶ֣בֶד

‘e·ḇeḏ

､ עִבְרִ֔י

‘iḇ·rî,

שֵׁ֥שׁ

šêš

שָׁנִ֖ים

šā·nîm

– יַעֲבֹ֑ד

ya·‘ă·ḇōḏ;

he shall serve –

וּבַ֨שְּׁבִעִ֔ת

ū·ḇaš·šə·ḇi·‘iṯ,

and in the seventh

יֵצֵ֥א

yê·ṣê

he shall go out

､ לַֽחָפְשִׁ֖י

la·ḥā·p̄ə·šî

free ､

. חִנָּֽם׃

ḥin·nām.

and pay nothing .

אִם־

’im-

If

בְּגַפּ֥וֹ

bə·ḡap·pōw

､ יָבֹ֖א

yā·ḇō

he comes in ､

בְּגַפּ֣וֹ

bə·ḡap·pōw

– יֵצֵ֑א

yê·ṣê;

he shall go out –

אִם־

’im-

if

בַּ֤עַל

ba·‘al

､ אִשָּׁה֙

’iš·šāh

of a wife ､

ה֔וּא

hū,

he

וְיָצְאָ֥ה

wə·yā·ṣə·’āh

then shall go out

אִשְׁתּ֖וֹ

’iš·tōw

. עִמּֽוֹ׃

‘im·mōw.

with him .

אִם־

’im-

If

אֲדֹנָיו֙

’ă·ḏō·nāw

יִתֶּן־

yit·ten-

ל֣וֹ

lōw

､ אִשָּׁ֔ה

’iš·šāh,

a wife ､

וְיָלְדָה־

wə·yā·lə·ḏāh-

and she has borne

ל֥וֹ

lōw

בָנִ֖ים

ḇā·nîm

א֣וֹ

’ōw

or

– בָנ֑וֹת

ḇā·nō·wṯ;

הָאִשָּׁ֣ה

hā·’iš·šāh

the wife

וִילָדֶ֗יהָ

wî·lā·ḏe·hā,

and her children

תִּהְיֶה֙

tih·yeh

､ לַֽאדֹנֶ֔יהָ

la·ḏō·ne·hā,

of her master ､

וְה֖וּא

wə·hū

and he

יֵצֵ֥א

yê·ṣê

. בְגַפּֽוֹ׃

ḇə·ḡap·pōw.

וְאִם־

wə·’im-

But if

אָמֹ֤ר

’ā·mōr

יֹאמַר֙

yō·mar

､ הָעֶ֔בֶד

hā·‘e·ḇeḏ,

the servant ､

אָהַ֙בְתִּי֙

’ā·haḇ·tî

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ אֲדֹנִ֔י

’ă·ḏō·nî,

my master ､

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ אִשְׁתִּ֖י

’iš·tî

my wife ､

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

– בָּנָ֑י

bā·nāy;

my children –

לֹ֥א

lō

not

אֵצֵ֖א

’ê·ṣê

I will go out

– חָפְשִֽׁי׃

ḥā·p̄ə·šî.

free –

וְהִגִּישׁ֤וֹ

wə·hig·gî·šōw

then shall bring him

אֲדֹנָיו֙

’ă·ḏō·nāw

אֶל־

’el-

to

– הָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔ים

hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm,

the judges –

וְהִגִּישׁוֹ֙

wə·hig·gî·šōw

and He shall bring him

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ הַדֶּ֔לֶת

had·de·leṯ,

the door ､

א֖וֹ

’ōw

or

אֶל־

’el-

to

– הַמְּזוּזָ֑ה

ham·mə·zū·zāh;

the doorpost –

וְרָצַ֨ע

wə·rā·ṣa‘

and shall pierce

אֲדֹנָ֤יו

’ă·ḏō·nāw

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

אָזְנוֹ֙

’ā·zə·nōw

– בַּמַּרְצֵ֔עַ

bam·mar·ṣê·a‘,

with an awl –

וַעֲבָד֖וֹ

wa·‘ă·ḇā·ḏōw

and he shall serve him

. לְעֹלָֽם׃

lə·‘ō·lām.

וְכִֽי־

wə·ḵî-

And if

יִמְכֹּ֥ר

yim·kōr

אִ֛ישׁ

’îš

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

בִּתּ֖וֹ

bit·tōw

､ לְאָמָ֑ה

lə·’ā·māh;

to be a female slave ､

לֹ֥א

lō

not

תֵצֵ֖א

ṯê·ṣê

she shall go out

כְּצֵ֥את

kə·ṣêṯ

as do

. הָעֲבָדִֽים׃

hā·‘ă·ḇā·ḏîm.

the male slaves .

אִם־

’im-

If

רָעָ֞ה

rā·‘āh

she is displeasing

בְּעֵינֵ֧י

bə·‘ê·nê

in the eyes

､ אֲדֹנֶ֛יהָ

’ă·ḏō·ne·hā

of her master ､

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

[לא]

(ל֥וֹ)

יְעָדָ֖הּ

yə·‘ā·ḏāh

has betrothed her

. וְהֶפְדָּ֑הּ

wə·hep̄·dāh;

then he shall let her be redeemed .

To a

נָכְרִ֛י

לֹא־

יִמְשֹׁ֥ל

yim·šōl

He shall have right

､ לְמָכְרָ֖הּ

lə·mā·ḵə·rāh

to sell her ､

בְּבִגְדוֹ־

bə·ḇiḡ·ḏōw-

since he has dealt deceitfully

. בָֽהּ׃

ḇāh.

with her .

וְאִם־

wə·’im-

And if

לִבְנ֖וֹ

liḇ·nōw

､ יִֽיעָדֶ֑נָּה

yî·‘ā·ḏen·nāh;

he has betrothed her ､

כְּמִשְׁפַּ֥ט

kə·miš·paṭ

according to the custom

הַבָּנ֖וֹת

hab·bā·nō·wṯ

יַעֲשֶׂה־

ya·‘ă·śeh-

. לָּֽהּ׃

lāh.

with her .

אִם־

’im-

If

אַחֶ֖רֶת

’a·ḥe·reṯ

יִֽקַּֽח־

yiq·qaḥ-

､ ל֑וֹ

lōw;

to him ､

､ שְׁאֵרָ֛הּ

šə·’ê·rāh

､ כְּסוּתָ֥הּ

kə·sū·ṯāh

her clothing ､

､ וְעֹנָתָ֖הּ

wə·‘ō·nā·ṯāh

and her marriage rights ､

לֹ֥א

lō

not

. יִגְרָֽע׃

yiḡ·rā‘.

he shall diminish .

וְאִם־

wə·’im-

And if

שְׁלָ֨שׁ־

šə·lāš-

אֵ֔לֶּה

’êl·leh,

לֹ֥א

lō

not

יַעֲשֶׂ֖ה

ya·‘ă·śeh

he does do

､ לָ֑הּ

lāh;

וְיָצְאָ֥ה

wə·yā·ṣə·’āh

then she shall go out

חִנָּ֖ם

ḥin·nām

אֵ֥ין

. כָּֽסֶף׃

[paying] money .

Personal Injury Laws

מַכֵּ֥ה

mak·kêh

､ אִ֛ישׁ

’îš

a man ､

､ וָמֵ֖ת

wā·mêṯ

so that he dies ､

מ֥וֹת

mō·wṯ

. יוּמָֽת׃

yū·māṯ.

shall be put to death .

וַאֲשֶׁר֙

wa·’ă·šer

And However if

לֹ֣א

lō

not

､ צָדָ֔ה

ṣā·ḏāh,

he did lie in wait ､

וְהָאֱלֹהִ֖ים

wə·hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm

but God

אִנָּ֣ה

’in·nāh

delivered [him]

– לְיָד֑וֹ

lə·yā·ḏōw;

into his hand –

וְשַׂמְתִּ֤י

wə·śam·tî

then I will appoint

לְךָ֙

lə·ḵā

מָק֔וֹם

mā·qō·wm,

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

יָנ֖וּס

yā·nūs

. שָֽׁמָּה׃

šām·māh.

וְכִֽי־

wə·ḵî-

but if

יָזִ֥ד

yā·ziḏ

acts with premeditation

אִ֛ישׁ

’îš

עַל־

‘al-

רֵעֵ֖הוּ

rê·‘ê·hū

לְהָרְג֣וֹ

lə·hā·rə·ḡōw

– בְעָרְמָ֑ה

ḇə·‘ā·rə·māh;

by treachery –

מֵעִ֣ם

mê·‘im

､ מִזְבְּחִ֔י

miz·bə·ḥî,

My altar ､

תִּקָּחֶ֖נּוּ

tiq·qā·ḥen·nū

you shall take him

. לָמֽוּת׃

lā·mūṯ.

that he may die .

And he who strikes

､ אָבִ֛יו

’ā·ḇîw

､ וְאִמּ֖וֹ

wə·’im·mōw

or his mother ､

מ֥וֹת

mō·wṯ

. יוּמָֽת׃

yū·māṯ.

shall be put to death .

וְגֹנֵ֨ב

wə·ḡō·nêḇ

And He who kidnaps

אִ֧ישׁ

’îš

､ וּמְכָר֛וֹ

ū·mə·ḵā·rōw

and sells him ､

וְנִמְצָ֥א

wə·nim·ṣā

or if he is found

､ בְיָד֖וֹ

ḇə·yā·ḏōw

in his hand ､

מ֥וֹת

mō·wṯ

. יוּמָֽת׃

yū·māṯ.

shall be put to death .

וּמְקַלֵּ֥ל

ū·mə·qal·lêl

And he who curses

אָבִ֛יו

’ā·ḇîw

､ וְאִמּ֖וֹ

wə·’im·mōw

or his mother ､

מ֥וֹת

mō·wṯ

. יוּמָֽת׃

yū·māṯ.

shall be put to death .

וְכִֽי־

And if

יְרִיבֻ֣ן

yə·rî·ḇun

contend with each other

､ אֲנָשִׁ֔ים

’ă·nā·šîm,

men ､

וְהִכָּה־

wə·hik·kāh-

אִישׁ֙

’îš

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

רֵעֵ֔הוּ

rê·‘ê·hū,

､ בְּאֶ֖בֶן

bə·’e·ḇen

with a stone ､

א֣וֹ

’ōw

or

､ בְאֶגְרֹ֑ף

ḇə·’eḡ·rōp̄;

with [his] fist ､

וְלֹ֥א

wə·lō

and not

､ יָמ֖וּת

yā·mūṯ

he does die ､

וְנָפַ֥ל

wə·nā·p̄al

but is confined

､ לְמִשְׁכָּֽב׃

lə·miš·kāḇ.

to [his] bed ､

אִם־

’im-

if

יָק֞וּם

yā·qūm

וְהִתְהַלֵּ֥ךְ

wə·hiṯ·hal·lêḵ

בַּח֛וּץ

ba·ḥūṣ

עַל־

‘al-

with

､ מִשְׁעַנְתּ֖וֹ

miš·‘an·tōw

וְנִקָּ֣ה

wə·niq·qāh

then he shall be acquitted

– הַמַּכֶּ֑ה

ham·mak·keh;

who struck [him] –

רַ֥ק

raq

､ שִׁבְתּ֛וֹ

šiḇ·tōw

[for] the loss of his time ､

יִתֵּ֖ן

yit·tên

וְרַפֹּ֥א

wə·rap·pō

. יְרַפֵּֽא׃

yə·rap·pê.

shall provide [for him] to be healed .

And if

יַכֶּה֩

אִ֨ישׁ

､ עַבְדּ֜וֹ

אֲמָתוֹ֙

’ă·mā·ṯōw

､ בַּשֵּׁ֔בֶט

baš·šê·ḇeṭ,

with a rod ､

וּמֵ֖ת

ū·mêṯ

so that he dies

תַּ֣חַת

ta·ḥaṯ

– יָד֑וֹ

yā·ḏōw;

נָקֹ֖ם

nā·qōm

. יִנָּקֵֽם׃

yin·nā·qêm.

he shall be punished .

､ אַ֥ךְ

’aḵ

Notwithstanding ､

אִם־

if

יוֹמַ֖יִם

､ יַעֲמֹ֑ד

he remains alive ､

לֹ֣א

he shall be punished –

כִּ֥י

כַסְפּ֖וֹ

[is] his property

וְנָ֨גְפ֜וּ

and hurt

אִשָּׁ֤ה

’iš·šāh

､ הָרָה֙

hā·rāh

וְיָצְא֣וּ

wə·yā·ṣə·’ū

so that prematurely

､ יְלָדֶ֔יהָ

yə·lā·ḏe·hā,

she gives birth ､

וְלֹ֥א

wə·lō

and yet no

יִהְיֶ֖ה

yih·yeh

､ אָס֑וֹן

’ā·sō·wn;

harm ､

עָנ֣וֹשׁ

‘ā·nō·wōš

､ יֵעָנֵ֗שׁ

yê·‘ā·nêš,

he shall be punished ､

כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֨ר

ka·’ă·šer

יָשִׁ֤ית

yā·šîṯ

עָלָיו֙

‘ā·lāw

on him

בַּ֣עַל

ba·‘al

､ הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה

hā·’iš·šāh,

of the woman ､

וְנָתַ֖ן

wə·nā·ṯan

and he shall pay

. בִּפְלִלִֽים׃

bip̄·li·lîm.

as the judges [determine] .

וְאִם־

wə·’im-

But if

אָס֖וֹן

’ā·sō·wn

､ יִהְיֶ֑ה

yih·yeh;

וְנָתַתָּ֥ה

wə·nā·ṯat·tāh

then you shall give

נֶ֖פֶשׁ

ne·p̄eš

תַּ֥חַת

ta·ḥaṯ

､ נָֽפֶשׁ׃

the eye

of his manservant ､

the eye

､ אֲמָת֖וֹ

’ă·mā·ṯōw

of his maidservant ､

– וְשִֽׁחֲתָ֑הּ

wə·ši·ḥă·ṯāh;

and destroys it –

לַֽחָפְשִׁ֥י

יְשַׁלְּחֶ֖נּוּ

yə·šal·lə·ḥen·nū

he shall let him go

for the sake of his eye .

And if

of his manservant

אֲמָת֖וֹ

､ יַפִּ֑יל

yap·pîl;

he knocks out ､

לַֽחָפְשִׁ֥י

la·ḥā·p̄ə·šî

יְשַׁלְּחֶ֖נּוּ

yə·šal·lə·ḥen·nū

he shall let him go

for the sake of his tooth .

a woman ､

and to death ､

סָק֨וֹל

then shall be stoned

､ הַשּׁ֗וֹר

haš·šō·wr,

the ox ､

וְלֹ֤א

wə·lō

and not

יֵאָכֵל֙

yê·’ā·ḵêl

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

– בְּשָׂר֔וֹ

bə·śā·rōw,

וּבַ֥עַל

ū·ḇa·‘al

but the owner

הַשּׁ֖וֹר

haš·šō·wr

of the ox

. נָקִֽי׃

nā·qî.

[shall be] acquitted .

וְאִ֡ם

wə·’im

But if

שׁוֹר֩

šō·wr

the ox

נַגָּ֨ח

nag·gāḥ

tended to thrust with its horn

ה֜וּא

hū

it

מִתְּמֹ֣ל

mit·tə·mōl

in

､ שִׁלְשֹׁ֗ם

šil·šōm,

וְהוּעַ֤ד

wə·hū·‘aḏ

and it has been made known

､ בִּבְעָלָיו֙

biḇ·‘ā·lāw

to his owner ､

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

and not

､ יִשְׁמְרֶ֔נּוּ

yiš·mə·ren·nū,

he has kept it confined ､

וְהֵמִ֥ית

wə·hê·mîṯ

so that it has killed

אִ֖ישׁ

’îš

א֣וֹ

’ōw

or

､ אִשָּׁ֑ה

’iš·šāh;

a woman ､

הַשּׁוֹר֙

haš·šō·wr

the ox

､ יִסָּקֵ֔ל

yis·sā·qêl,

shall be stoned ､

וְגַם־

wə·ḡam-

and also

בְּעָלָ֖יו

bə·‘ā·lāw

. יוּמָֽת׃

yū·māṯ.

shall be put to death .

אִם־

’im-

If

כֹּ֖פֶר

kō·p̄er

יוּשַׁ֣ת

yū·šaṯ

there is imposed

､ עָלָ֑יו

‘ā·lāw;

on him ､

וְנָתַן֙

wə·nā·ṯan

then he shall pay

פִּדְיֹ֣ן

piḏ·yōn

נַפְשׁ֔וֹ

nap̄·šōw,

כְּכֹ֥ל

kə·ḵōl

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

יוּשַׁ֖ת

yū·šaṯ

. עָלָֽיו׃

‘ā·lāw.

on him .

אוֹ־

’ōw-

בֵ֥ן

it has gored ､

אוֹ־

according to judgment

הַזֶּ֖ה

it shall be done

to their owner ､

וְהַמֵּ֖ת

but the dead [animal]

שׁוֹר֙

תַּ֣חַת

ta·ḥaṯ

– הַשּׁ֔וֹר

haš·šō·wr,

ox –

וְהַמֵּ֖ת

wə·ham·mêṯ

and the dead animal

יִֽהְיֶה־
