The Benefits of Wisdom

､ בְּ֭נִי

bə·nî

My son ､

אִם־

’im-

if

תִּקַּ֣ח

tiq·qaḥ

､ אֲמָרָ֑י

’ă·mā·rāy;

my words ､

וּ֝מִצְוֺתַ֗י

ū·miṣ·wō·ṯay,

and my commands

תִּצְפֹּ֥ן

tiṣ·pōn

. אִתָּֽךְ׃

’it·tāḵ.

לְהַקְשִׁ֣יב

lə·haq·šîḇ

So that you incline

､ לַֽחָכְמָ֣ה

la·ḥā·ḵə·māh

to wisdom ､

אָזְנֶ֑ךָ

’ā·zə·ne·ḵā;

תַּטֶּ֥ה

taṭ·ṭeh

[And] apply

לִ֝בְּךָ֗

lib·bə·ḵā,

– לַתְּבוּנָֽה׃

lat·tə·ḇū·nāh.

to understanding –

､ כִּ֤י

kî

Yes ､

אִ֣ם

’im

if

､ לַבִּינָ֣ה

lab·bî·nāh

for discernment ､

תִקְרָ֑א

ṯiq·rā;

– לַ֝תְּבוּנָ֗ה

lat·tə·ḇū·nāh,

for understanding –

תִּתֵּ֥ן

tit·tên

[And] lift up

. קוֹלֶֽךָ׃

qō·w·le·ḵā.

אִם־

’im-

If

תְּבַקְשֶׁ֥נָּה

tə·ḇaq·šen·nāh

､ כַכָּ֑סֶף

ḵak·kā·sep̄;

as silver ､

– וְֽכַמַּטְמוֹנִ֥ים

wə·ḵam·maṭ·mō·w·nîm

and as [for] hidden treasures –

. תַּחְפְּשֶֽׂנָּה׃

taḥ·pə·śen·nāh.

search for her .

אָ֗ז

’āz,

תָּ֭בִין

tā·ḇîn

you will understand

יִרְאַ֣ת

yir·’aṯ

the fear

､ יְהוָ֑ה

Yah·weh;

of Yahweh ､

וְדַ֖עַת

wə·ḏa·‘aṯ

and the knowledge

אֱלֹהִ֣ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm

of God

. תִּמְצָֽא׃

tim·ṣā.

כִּֽי־

kî-

יְ֭הוָה

Yah·weh

יִתֵּ֣ן

yit·tên

– חָכְמָ֑ה

ḥāḵ·māh

מִ֝פִּ֗יו

mip·pîw,

from His mouth [come]

דַּ֣עַת

da·‘aṯ

. וּתְבוּנָֽה׃

ū·ṯə·ḇū·nāh.

and understanding .

[וצפן]

wə·ṣā·p̄an

-

(יִצְפֹּ֣ן)

yiṣ·pōn

He stores up

– לַ֭יְשָׁרִים

lay·šā·rîm

for the upright –

תּוּשִׁיָּ֑ה

tū·šî·yāh;

מָ֝גֵ֗ן

mā·ḡên,

[He is] a shield

לְהֹ֣לְכֵי

lə·hō·lə·ḵê

to those who walk

. תֹֽם׃

ṯōm.

לִ֭נְצֹר

lin·ṣōr

אָרְח֣וֹת

’ā·rə·ḥō·wṯ

､ מִשְׁפָּ֑ט

miš·pāṭ;

of justice ､

וְדֶ֖רֶךְ

wə·ḏe·reḵ

and the way

[חסידו]

ḥă·sî·ḏōw

(חֲסִידָ֣יו)

ḥă·sî·ḏāw

. יִשְׁמֹֽר׃

yiš·mōr.

אָ֗ז

’āz,

תָּ֭בִין

tā·ḇîn

you will understand

､ צֶ֣דֶק

ṣe·ḏeq

righteousness ､

､ וּמִשְׁפָּ֑ט

ū·miš·pāṭ;

and justice ､

– וּ֝מֵישָׁרִ֗ים

ū·mê·šā·rîm,

and Equity [and] –

כָּל־

kāl-

מַעְגַּל־

ma‘·gal-

. טֽוֹב׃

ṭō·wḇ.

כִּֽי־

kî-

תָב֣וֹא

ṯā·ḇō·w

חָכְמָ֣ה

ḥāḵ·māh

､ בְלִבֶּ֑ךָ

ḇə·lib·be·ḵā;

וְ֝דַ֗עַת

wə·ḏa·‘aṯ,

– לְֽנַפְשְׁךָ֥

lə·nap̄·šə·ḵā

to your soul –

. יִנְעָֽם׃

yin·‘ām.

מְ֭זִמָּה

mə·zim·māh

תִּשְׁמֹ֥ר

tiš·mōr

עָלֶ֗יךָ

‘ā·le·ḵā,

תְּבוּנָ֥ה

tə·ḇū·nāh

. תִנְצְרֶֽכָּה׃

ṯin·ṣə·rek·kāh.

will keep you .

לְ֭הַצִּ֣ילְךָ

lə·haṣ·ṣî·lə·ḵā

מִדֶּ֣רֶךְ

mid·de·reḵ

רָ֑ע

rā‘;

מֵ֝אִ֗ישׁ

mê·’îš,

מְדַבֵּ֥ר

mə·ḏab·bêr

– תַּהְפֻּכֽוֹת׃

tah·pu·ḵō·wṯ.

perverse things –

הַ֭עֹ֣זְבִים

ha·‘ō·zə·ḇîm

from those who leave

אָרְח֣וֹת

’ā·rə·ḥō·wṯ

､ יֹ֑שֶׁר

yō·šer;

of uprightness ､

לָ֝לֶ֗כֶת

lā·le·ḵeṯ,

בְּדַרְכֵי־

bə·ḏar·ḵê-

in the ways

– חֹֽשֶׁךְ׃

ḥō·šeḵ.

of darkness –

הַ֭שְּׂמֵחִים

haś·śə·mê·ḥîm

לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת

la·‘ă·śō·wṯ

､ רָ֑ע

rā‘;

evil ､

יָ֝גִ֗ילוּ

yā·ḡî·lū,

בְּֽתַהְפֻּכ֥וֹת

bə·ṯah·pu·ḵō·wṯ

in the perversity

– רָֽע׃

rā‘.

of the wicked –

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

אָרְחֹתֵיהֶ֣ם

’ā·rə·ḥō·ṯê·hem

､ עִקְּשִׁ֑ים

‘iq·qə·šîm;

וּ֝נְלוֹזִ֗ים

ū·nə·lō·w·zîm,

and [who are] devious

– בְּמַעְגְּלוֹתָֽם׃

bə·ma‘·gə·lō·w·ṯām.

in their paths –

לְ֭הַצִּ֣ילְךָ

lə·haṣ·ṣî·lə·ḵā

מֵאִשָּׁ֣ה

mê·’iš·šāh

זָרָ֑ה

zā·rāh;

מִ֝נָּכְרִיָּ֗ה

min·nā·ḵə·rî·yāh,

from the seductress

– אֲמָרֶ֥יהָ

’ă·mā·re·hā

with her words –

. הֶחֱלִֽיקָה׃

he·ḥĕ·lî·qāh.

[who] flatters .

הַ֭עֹזֶבֶת

ha·‘ō·ze·ḇeṯ

אַלּ֣וּף

’al·lūp̄

､ נְעוּרֶ֑יהָ

nə·‘ū·re·hā;

of her youth ､

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

בְּרִ֖ית

bə·rîṯ

אֱלֹהֶ֣יהָ

’ĕ·lō·he·hā

. שָׁכֵֽחָה׃

šā·ḵê·ḥāh.

כִּ֤י

kî

שָׁ֣חָה

šā·ḥāh

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ מָ֣וֶת

mā·weṯ

בֵּיתָ֑הּ

bê·ṯāh;

וְאֶל־

wə·’el-

and to

רְ֝פָאִ֗ים

rə·p̄ā·’îm,

the dead

. מַעְגְּלֹתֶֽיהָ׃

ma‘·gə·lō·ṯe·hā.

כָּל־

kāl-

בָּ֭אֶיהָ

bā·’e·hā

who go to her

לֹ֣א

lō

､ יְשׁוּב֑וּן

yə·šū·ḇūn;

וְלֹֽא־

wə·lō-

יַ֝שִּׂ֗יגוּ

yaś·śî·ḡū,

אָרְח֥וֹת

’ā·rə·ḥō·wṯ

. חַיִּֽים׃

ḥay·yîm.

of life .

לְמַ֗עַן

lə·ma·‘an,

So

תֵּ֭לֵךְ

tê·lêḵ

בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ

bə·ḏe·reḵ

in the way

טוֹבִ֑ים

ṭō·w·ḇîm;

וְאָרְח֖וֹת

wə·’ā·rə·ḥō·wṯ

and [to] the paths

צַדִּיקִ֣ים

ṣad·dî·qîm

of righteousness

. תִּשְׁמֹֽר׃

tiš·mōr.

כִּֽי־

kî-

יְשָׁרִ֥ים

yə·šā·rîm

יִשְׁכְּנוּ‪‬‪‬

yiš·kə·nū-

will dwell in

､ אָ֑רֶץ

’ā·reṣ;

the land ､

וּ֝תְמִימִ֗ים

ū·ṯə·mî·mîm,

and the blameless

יִוָּ֥תְרוּ

yiw·wā·ṯə·rū

. בָֽהּ׃

ḇāh.

in it .

וּ֭רְשָׁעִים

ū·rə·šā·‘îm

But the wicked

､ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ

mê·’e·reṣ

from the earth ､

יִכָּרֵ֑תוּ

yik·kā·rê·ṯū;

will be cut off

וּ֝בוֹגְדִ֗ים

ū·ḇō·wḡ·ḏîm,

and the unfaithful

יִסְּח֥וּ

yis·sə·ḥū

will be uprooted

､ מִמֶּֽנָּה׃

mim·men·nāh.

from it ､
