Avoid Immorality

､ בְּ֭נִי

bə·nî

My son ､

､ לְחָכְמָתִ֣י

lə·ḥā·ḵə·mā·ṯî

to my wisdom ､

הַקְשִׁ֑יבָה

haq·šî·ḇāh;

– לִ֝תְבוּנָתִ֗י

liṯ·ḇū·nā·ṯî,

to my understanding –

הַט־

haṭ-

. אָזְנֶֽךָ׃

’ā·zə·ne·ḵā.

לִשְׁמֹ֥ר

liš·mōr

That you may preserve

､ מְזִמּ֑וֹת

mə·zim·mō·wṯ;

וְ֝דַ֗עַת

wə·ḏa·‘aṯ,

שְׂפָתֶ֥יךָ

śə·p̄ā·ṯe·ḵā

. יִנְצֹֽרוּ׃

yin·ṣō·rū.

כִּ֤י

kî

､ נֹ֣פֶת

nō·p̄eṯ

תִּ֭טֹּפְנָה

tiṭ·ṭō·p̄ə·nāh

שִׂפְתֵ֣י

śip̄·ṯê

the lips

זָרָ֑ה

zā·rāh;

of an immoral woman

וְחָלָ֖ק

wə·ḥā·lāq

– מִשֶּׁ֣מֶן

miš·še·men

. חִכָּֽהּ׃

ḥik·kāh.

her mouth [is] .

וְֽ֭אַחֲרִיתָהּ

wə·’a·ḥă·rî·ṯāh

But in the end

מָרָ֣ה

mā·rāh

､ כַֽלַּעֲנָ֑ה

ḵal·la·‘ă·nāh;

as wormwood ､

חַ֝דָּ֗ה

ḥad·dāh,

כְּחֶ֣רֶב

kə·ḥe·reḇ

as a sword

. פִּיּֽוֹת׃

pî·yō·wṯ.

רַ֭גְלֶיהָ

raḡ·le·hā

יֹרְד֣וֹת

yō·rə·ḏō·wṯ

– מָ֑וֶת

mā·weṯ;

to death –

שְׁ֝א֗וֹל

’ō·wl,

צְעָדֶ֥יהָ

ṣə·‘ā·ḏe·hā

. יִתְמֹֽכוּ׃

yiṯ·mō·ḵū.

אֹ֣רַח

’ō·raḥ

､ חַ֭יִּים

ḥay·yîm

of life ､

פֶּן־

pen-

תְּפַלֵּ֑ס

tə·p̄al·lês;

､ נָע֥וּ

nā·‘ū

are unstable ､

מַ֝עְגְּלֹתֶ֗יהָ

ma‘·gə·lō·ṯe·hā,

לֹ֣א

lō

not

. תֵדָֽע׃

ṯê·ḏā‘.

You do know [them] .

וְעַתָּ֣ה

wə·‘at·tāh

､ בָ֭נִים

ḇā·nîm

[my] children ､

שִׁמְעוּ־

šim·‘ū-

לִ֑י

lî;

me

וְאַל־

wə·’al-

and not

תָּ֝ס֗וּרוּ

tā·sū·rū,

מֵאִמְרֵי־

mê·’im·rê-

. פִֽי׃

p̄î.

of my mouth .

הַרְחֵ֣ק

har·ḥêq

מֵעָלֶ֣יהָ

mê·‘ā·le·hā

דַרְכֶּ֑ךָ

ḏar·ke·ḵā;

וְאַל־

wə·’al-

and not

תִּ֝קְרַ֗ב

tiq·raḇ,

do go near

אֶל־

’el-

to

פֶּ֥תַח

pe·ṯaḥ

the door

､ בֵּיתָֽהּ׃

bê·ṯāh.

of her house ､

פֶּן־

pen-

תִּתֵּ֣ן

tit·tên

､ לַאֲחֵרִ֣ים

la·’ă·ḥê·rîm

to others ､

הוֹדֶ֑ךָ

hō·w·ḏe·ḵā;

וּ֝שְׁנֹתֶ֗יךָ

ū·šə·nō·ṯe·ḵā,

– לְאַכְזָרִֽי׃

lə·’aḵ·zā·rî.

to the cruel [one] –

פֶּֽן־

pen-

יִשְׂבְּע֣וּ

yiś·bə·‘ū

זָרִ֣ים

zā·rîm

– כֹּחֶ֑ךָ

kō·ḥe·ḵā;

with your wealth –

וַ֝עֲצָבֶ֗יךָ

wa·‘ă·ṣā·ḇe·ḵā,

and your labors [go]

בְּבֵ֣ית

bə·ḇêṯ

to the house

– נָכְרִֽי׃

nā·ḵə·rî.

of a foreigner –

וְנָהַמְתָּ֥

wə·nā·ham·tā

､ בְאַחֲרִיתֶ֑ךָ

ḇə·’a·ḥă·rî·ṯe·ḵā;

at last ､

､ בִּכְל֥וֹת

biḵ·lō·wṯ

when are consumed ､

בְּ֝שָׂרְךָ֗

bə·śā·rə·ḵā,

. וּשְׁאֵרֶֽךָ׃

ū·šə·’ê·re·ḵā.

and your body .

､ וְֽאָמַרְתָּ֗

wə·’ā·mar·tā,

And say ､

אֵ֭יךְ

’êḵ

שָׂנֵ֣אתִי

śā·nê·ṯî

､ מוּסָ֑ר

mū·sār;

instruction ､

– וְ֝תוֹכַ֗חַת

wə·ṯō·w·ḵa·ḥaṯ,

and correction –

נָאַ֥ץ

nā·’aṣ

. לִבִּֽי׃

lib·bî.

my heart .

וְֽלֹא־

wə·lō·šā-

And not

שָׁ֭מַעְתִּי

ma‘·tî

בְּק֣וֹל

bə·qō·wl

､ מוֹרָ֑י

mō·w·rāy;

of my teachers ､

וְ֝לִֽמְלַמְּדַ֗י

wə·lim·lam·mə·ḏay,

and to those who instructed me

לֹא־

lō-

הִטִּ֥יתִי

hiṭ·ṭî·ṯî

. אָזְנִֽי׃

’ā·zə·nî.

my ear .

כִּ֭מְעַט

kim·‘aṭ

On the verge

הָיִ֣יתִי

hā·yî·ṯî

בְכָל־

ḇə·ḵāl-

רָ֑ע

rā‘;

בְּת֖וֹךְ

bə·ṯō·wḵ

in the midst

קָהָ֣ל

qā·hāl

of the congregation

. וְעֵדָֽה׃

wə·‘ê·ḏāh.

שְׁתֵה־

šə·ṯêh-

מַ֥יִם

ma·yim

､ מִבּוֹרֶ֑ךָ

mib·bō·w·re·ḵā;

from your own cistern ､

וְ֝נֹזְלִ֗ים

wə·nō·zə·lîm,

and running water

מִתּ֥וֹךְ

mit·tō·wḵ

. בְּאֵרֶֽךָ׃

bə·’ê·re·ḵā.

your own well .

יָפ֣וּצוּ

yā·p̄ū·ṣū

Should be dispersed

מַעְיְנֹתֶ֣יךָ

ma‘·yə·nō·ṯe·ḵā

､ ח֑וּצָה

ḥū·ṣāh;

בָּ֝רְחֹב֗וֹת

bā·rə·ḥō·ḇō·wṯ,

in the streets

פַּלְגֵי־

pal·ḡê-

. מָֽיִם׃

mā·yim.

of water .

יִֽהְיוּ־

yih·yū-

לְךָ֥

lə·ḵā

לְבַדֶּ֑ךָ

lə·ḇad·de·ḵā;

וְאֵ֖ין

wə·’ên

and not

לְזָרִ֣ים

lə·zā·rîm

. אִתָּֽךְ׃

’it·tāḵ.

with you .

יְהִֽי־

yə·hî-

Let be

מְקוֹרְךָ֥

mə·qō·wr·ḵā

､ בָר֑וּךְ

ḇā·rūḵ;

וּ֝שְׂמַ֗ח

ū·śə·maḥ,

מֵאֵ֥שֶׁת

mê·’ê·šeṯ

with the wife

. נְעוּרֶֽךָ׃

nə·‘ū·re·ḵā.

of your youth .

אַיֶּ֥לֶת

’ay·ye·leṯ

[As a] deer

אֲהָבִ֗ים

’ă·hā·ḇîm,

– וְֽיַעֲלַ֫ת־

wə·ya·‘ă·laṯ-

and a doe –

חֵ֥ן

ḥên

דַּ֭דֶּיהָ

dad·de·hā

יְרַוֻּ֣ךָ

yə·raw·wu·ḵā

let satisfy you

בְכָל־

ḇə·ḵāl-

at all

– עֵ֑ת

‘êṯ;

בְּ֝אַהֲבָתָ֗הּ

bə·’a·hă·ḇā·ṯāh,

תִּשְׁגֶּ֥ה

tiš·geh

and be enraptured

. תָמִֽיד׃

ṯā·mîḏ.

וְלָ֤מָּה

wə·lām·māh

תִשְׁגֶּ֣ה

ṯiš·geh

should you be enraptured

､ בְנִ֣י

ḇə·nî

my son ､

､ בְזָרָ֑ה

ḇə·zā·rāh;

by an immoral woman ､

וּ֝תְחַבֵּ֗ק

ū·ṯə·ḥab·bêq,

and be embraced

חֵ֣ק

ḥêq

in the arms

؟ נָכְרִיָּֽה׃

nā·ḵə·rî·yāh.

of a seductress ؟

כִּ֤י

kî

נֹ֨כַח ׀

nō·ḵaḥ

עֵינֵ֣י

‘ê·nê

the eyes

יְ֭הוָה

Yah·weh

דַּרְכֵי־

dar·ḵê-

the ways

אִ֑ישׁ

’îš;

of man

וְֽכָל־

wə·ḵāl

and all

מַעְגְּלֹתָ֥יו

ma‘·gə·lō·ṯāw

. מְפַלֵּֽס׃

mə·p̄al·lês.

עַֽווֹנוֹתָ֗יו‪‬

‘a·wō·w·nō·w·ṯāw,

His own iniquities

יִלְכְּדֻנ֥וֹ

yil·kə·ḏu·nōw

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הָרָשָׁ֑ע

hā·rā·šā‘;

the wicked [man]

וּבְחַבְלֵ֥י

ū·ḇə·ḥaḇ·lê

and in the cords

חַ֝טָּאת֗וֹ

ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯōw,

. יִתָּמֵֽךְ׃

yit·tā·mêḵ.

he is caught .

ה֗וּא

hū,

He

יָ֭מוּת

yā·mūṯ

בְּאֵ֣ין

bə·’ên

– מוּסָ֑ר

mū·sār;

of instruction –

וּבְרֹ֖ב

ū·ḇə·rōḇ

and in the greatness

אִוַּלְתּ֣וֹ

’iw·wal·tōw

. יִשְׁגֶּֽה׃

yiš·geh.

he shall go astray .
