an evil

רָאִ֖יתִי

תַּ֣חַת
ta·ḥaṯ
､ הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ
haš·šā·meš;
the sun ､
וְרַבָּ֥ה
wə·rab·bāh
and common
הִ֖יא
hî
it [is]
עַל־
‘al-
– הָאָדָֽם׃
hā·’ā·ḏām.
men –

אִ֣ישׁ
’îš
a man
אֲשֶׁ֣ר
’ă·šer
to whom
יִתֶּן־
yit·ten-
ל֣וֹ
lōw
to whom
הָאֱלֹהִ֡ים
hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm
､ עֹשֶׁר֩
‘ō·šer
riches ､
､ וּנְכָסִ֨ים
ū·nə·ḵā·sîm
and wealth ､
､ וְכָב֜וֹד
wə·ḵā·ḇō·wḏ
and honor ､
וְֽאֵינֶ֨נּוּ
wə·’ê·nen·nū
חָסֵ֥ר
ḥā·sêr
he is lacking
לְנַפְשׁ֣וֹ ׀
lə·nap̄·šōw
מִכֹּ֣ל
mik·kōl
of all
אֲשֶׁר־
’ă·šer-
､ יִתְאַוֶּ֗ה
yiṯ·’aw·weh,
he desires ､
וְלֹֽא־
wə·lō-
and yet not
יַשְׁלִיטֶ֤נּוּ
yaš·lî·ṭen·nū
הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙
hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm
לֶאֱכֹ֣ל
le·’ĕ·ḵōl
to eat
מִמֶּ֔נּוּ
mim·men·nū,
of it
כִּ֛י
kî
but
אִ֥ישׁ
’îš
נָכְרִ֖י
nā·ḵə·rî
יֹֽאכֲלֶ֑נּוּ
yō·ḵă·len·nū;
זֶ֥ה
zeh
､ הֶ֛בֶל
he·ḇel
[is] vanity ､
וָחֳלִ֥י
wā·ḥo·lî
and an affliction
רָ֖ע
rā‘
. הֽוּא׃
hū.
it [is] .

a man
מֵאָ֡ה

､ וְשָׁנִים֩

and years ､
רַבּ֨וֹת

יִֽחְיֶ֜ה
yiḥ·yeh
､ וְרַ֣ב ׀
wə·raḇ
so many ､
שֶׁיִּהְי֣וּ
še·yih·yū
יְמֵֽי־
yə·mê-
the days
שָׁנָ֗יו
šā·nāw,
וְנַפְשׁוֹ֙
wə·nap̄·šōw
but his soul
לֹא־
lō-
not
תִשְׂבַּ֣ע
ṯiś·ba‘
מִן־
min-
with
､ הַטּוֹבָ֔ה
haṭ·ṭō·w·ḇāh,
וְגַם־
wə·ḡam-
– קְבוּרָ֖ה
qə·ḇū·rāh
burial –
לֹא־
lō-
no
הָ֣יְתָה
hā·yə·ṯāh
he has
לּ֑וֹ
lōw;
to
､ אָמַ֕רְתִּי
’ā·mar·tî
I say [that] ､
ט֥וֹב
ṭō·wḇ
[is] better
מִמֶּ֖נּוּ
mim·men·nū
than he
. הַנָּֽפֶל׃
han·nā·p̄el.

､ בַהֶ֥בֶל

in vanity ､
בָּ֖א
bā
､ וּבַחֹ֣שֶׁךְ
ū·ḇa·ḥō·šeḵ
and in darkness ､
יֵלֵ֑ךְ
yê·lêḵ;
וּבַחֹ֖שֶׁךְ
ū·ḇa·ḥō·šeḵ
and with darkness
שְׁמ֥וֹ
šə·mōw
. יְכֻסֶּֽה׃
yə·ḵus·seh.
is covered .

､ שֶׁ֥מֶשׁ

the sun ､
לֹא־

not
רָאָ֖ה

וְלֹ֣א

or
יָדָ֑ע

נַ֥חַת
na·ḥaṯ
לָזֶ֖ה
lā·zeh
. מִזֶּֽה׃

And even if ､
חָיָ֗ה
ḥā·yāh,
אֶ֤לֶף
’e·lep̄
שָׁנִים֙
šā·nîm
פַּעֲמַ֔יִם
pa·‘ă·ma·yim,
– וְטוֹבָ֖ה
wə·ṭō·w·ḇāh
but goodness –
לֹ֣א
lō
not
רָאָ֑ה
rā·’āh;
הֲלֹ֛א
hă·lō
do not
אֶל־
’el-
to
؟ מָק֥וֹם
mā·qō·wm
אֶחָ֖ד
’e·ḥāḏ
הַכֹּ֥ל
hak·kōl
. הוֹלֵֽךְ׃
hō·w·lêḵ.

the labor
הָאָדָ֖ם

､ לְפִ֑יהוּ

[is] for his mouth ､
וְגַם־

and yet
הַנֶּ֖פֶשׁ
han·ne·p̄eš
the soul
לֹ֥א
lō
not
. תִמָּלֵֽא׃
ṯim·mā·lê.

יּוֹתֵ֥ר

לֶחָכָ֖ם
le·ḥā·ḵām
the wise [man]
מִֽן־
min-
؟ הַכְּסִ֑יל
hak·kə·sîl;
the fool ؟
מַה־
mah-
､ לֶּעָנִ֣י
le·‘ā·nî
the poor man ､
יוֹדֵ֔עַ
yō·w·ḏê·a‘,
לַהֲלֹ֖ךְ
la·hă·lōḵ
to walk
נֶ֥גֶד
ne·ḡeḏ
؟ הַחַיִּֽים׃
ha·ḥay·yîm.
the living ؟

Better [is]
מַרְאֵ֥ה
mar·’êh
the sight
עֵינַ֖יִם
‘ê·na·yim
of the eyes
מֵֽהֲלָךְ־
mê·hă·lāḵ-
– נָ֑פֶשׁ
nā·p̄eš;
of desire –
גַּם־
gam-
זֶ֥ה
zeh
הֶ֖בֶל
he·ḇel
[is] vanity
וּרְע֥וּת
ū·rə·‘ūṯ
. רֽוּחַ׃
rū·aḥ.
the wind .

מַה־

שֶּֽׁהָיָ֗ה
še·hā·yāh,
one is
､ כְּבָר֙
kə·ḇār
נִקְרָ֣א
niq·rā
שְׁמ֔וֹ
šə·mōw,
-
וְנוֹדָ֖ע
wə·nō·w·ḏā‘
for it is known
אֲשֶׁר־
’ă·šer-
ה֣וּא
hū
he [is]
– אָדָ֑ם
’ā·ḏām;
man –
וְלֹא־
wə·lō-
and cannot
יוּכַ֣ל
yū·ḵal
he
לָדִ֔ין
lā·ḏîn,
עִ֥ם
‘im
with
[שהתקיף]
še·haṯ·qîp̄
-
(שֶׁתַּקִּ֖יף)
šet·taq·qîp̄
. מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃
mim·men·nū.
than he .

how [is]
יֹּתֵ֖ר

the better
؟ לָאָדָֽם׃
lā·’ā·ḏām.
man ؟

what [is]
טּ֨וֹב

לָֽאָדָ֜ם

､ בַּֽחַיִּ֗ים

in life ､
מִסְפַּ֛ר

יְמֵי־

the days
חַיֵּ֥י

of life
הֶבְל֖וֹ
heḇ·lōw
וְיַעֲשֵׂ֣ם
wə·ya·‘ă·śêm
and which he passes
؟ כַּצֵּ֑ל
kaṣ·ṣêl;
אֲשֶׁר֙
’ă·šer
מִֽי־
mî-
יַגִּ֣יד
yag·gîḏ
לָֽאָדָ֔ם
lā·’ā·ḏām,
a man
מַה־
mah-
יִּהְיֶ֥ה
yih·yeh
will happen
אַחֲרָ֖יו
’a·ḥă·rāw
תַּ֥חַת
ta·ḥaṯ
؟ הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃
haš·šā·meš.
the sun ؟
