וְלָב֣וּר

so that I could declare

אֶת־

’eṯ-

כָּל־

kāl-

､ זֶ֔ה

zeh,

this ､

אֲשֶׁ֨ר

’ă·šer

､ הַצַּדִּיקִ֧ים

haṣ·ṣad·dî·qîm

the righteous ､

､ וְהַחֲכָמִ֛ים

wə·ha·ḥă·ḵā·mîm

and the wise ､

､ וַעֲבָדֵיהֶ֖ם

wa·‘ă·ḇā·ḏê·hem

and their works [are] ､

בְּיַ֣ד

bə·yaḏ

in the hand

. הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים

hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm;

of God .

גַּֽם־

gam-

אַהֲבָ֣ה

’a·hă·ḇāh

גַם־

ḡam-

or

שִׂנְאָ֗ה

śin·’āh,

אֵ֤ין

’ên

not

יוֹדֵ֙עַ֙

yō·w·ḏê·a‘

הָֽאָדָ֔ם

hā·’ā·ḏām,

הַכֹּ֖ל

hak·kōl

. לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃

lip̄·nê·hem.

[they see] before them .

הַכֹּ֞ל

All things [come]

כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר

ka·’ă·šer

– לַכֹּ֗ל

lak·kōl,

to all –

מִקְרֶ֨ה

miq·reh

event [happens]

אֶחָ֜ד

’e·ḥāḏ

､ לַצַּדִּ֤יק

laṣ·ṣad·dîq

to the righteous ､

– וְלָרָשָׁע֙

wə·lā·rā·šā‘

and the wicked –

לַטּוֹב֙

laṭ·ṭō·wḇ

to the good

､ וְלַטָּה֣וֹר

wə·laṭ·ṭā·hō·wr

and the clean ､

– וְלַטָּמֵ֔א

wə·laṭ·ṭā·mê,

and the unclean –

､ וְלַזֹּבֵ֔חַ

wə·laz·zō·ḇê·aḥ,

and to him who sacrifices ､

וְלַאֲשֶׁ֖ר

wə·la·’ă·šer

– אֵינֶ֣נּוּ

’ê·nen·nū

not –

זֹבֵ֑חַ

zō·ḇê·aḥ;

､ כַּטּוֹב֙

kaṭ·ṭō·wḇ

as the is good ､

– כַּֽחֹטֶ֔א

ka·ḥō·ṭe,

so the [is] sinner –

､ הַנִּשְׁבָּ֕ע

han·niš·bā‘

He who takes an oath ､

כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר

ka·’ă·šer

as

שְׁבוּעָ֥ה

šə·ḇū·‘āh

. יָרֵֽא׃

yā·rê.

[he] who fears .

זֶ֣ה ׀

zeh

This [is]

רָ֗ע

rā‘,

בְּכֹ֤ל

bə·ḵōl

in all

אֲשֶֽׁר־

’ă·šer-

נַעֲשָׂה֙

na·‘ă·śāh

תַּ֣חַת

ta·ḥaṯ

､ הַשֶּׁ֔מֶשׁ

haš·še·meš,

the sun ､

כִּֽי־

kî-

מִקְרֶ֥ה

miq·reh

thing [happens]

אֶחָ֖ד

’e·ḥāḏ

– לַכֹּ֑ל

lak·kōl;

to all –

וְגַ֣ם

wə·ḡam

לֵ֣ב

lêḇ

בְּֽנֵי־

bə·nê-

of the sons

הָ֠אָדָם

hā·’ā·ḏām

of men

מָלֵא־

mā·lê-

､ רָ֨ע

rā‘

of evil ､

וְהוֹלֵל֤וֹת

wə·hō·w·lê·lō·wṯ

and madness [is]

בִּלְבָבָם֙

bil·ḇā·ḇām

in their hearts

､ בְּחַיֵּיהֶ֔ם

bə·ḥay·yê·hem,

while they live ､

וְאַחֲרָ֖יו

wə·’a·ḥă·rāw

and after that [they go]

אֶל־

’el-

to

. הַמֵּתִֽים׃

ham·mê·ṯîm.

the dead .

כִּי־

kî-

But

מִי֙

mî

who [is he]

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

[יבחר]

yib·bā·ḥêr

-

(יְחֻבַּ֔ר)

yə·ḥub·bar,

אֶ֥ל

to

כָּל־

kāl-

הַחַיִּ֖ים

ha·ḥay·yîm

יֵ֣שׁ

– בִּטָּח֑וֹן

biṭ·ṭā·ḥō·wn;

hope –

כִּֽי־

לְכֶ֤לֶב

lə·ḵe·leḇ

חַי֙

ḥay

ה֣וּא

is

ט֔וֹב

ṭō·wḇ,

מִן־

min-

הָאַרְיֵ֖ה

hā·’ar·yêh

. הַמֵּֽת׃

ham·mêṯ.

כִּ֧י

kî

הַֽחַיִּ֛ים

ha·ḥay·yîm

יוֹדְעִ֖ים

yō·wḏ·‘îm

– שֶׁיָּמֻ֑תוּ

še·yā·mu·ṯū;

that they will die –

וְהַמֵּתִ֞ים

wə·ham·mê·ṯîm

but the dead

אֵינָ֧ם

’ê·nām

not

יוֹדְעִ֣ים

yō·wḏ·‘îm

､ מְא֗וּמָה

mə·’ū·māh,

וְאֵֽין־

wə·’ên-

and no

ע֤וֹד

‘ō·wḏ

לָהֶם֙

lā·hem

– שָׂכָ֔ר

śā·ḵār,

כִּ֥י

kî

נִשְׁכַּ֖ח

niš·kaḥ

. זִכְרָֽם׃

ziḵ·rām.

the memory of them .

גַּ֣ם

gam

､ אַהֲבָתָ֧ם

’a·hă·ḇā·ṯām

גַּם־

gam-

and

､ שִׂנְאָתָ֛ם

śin·’ā·ṯām

their hatred ､

גַּם־

gam-

and

､ קִנְאָתָ֖ם

qin·’ā·ṯām

כְּבָ֣ר

kə·ḇār

– אָבָ֑דָה

’ā·ḇā·ḏāh;

have perished –

וְחֵ֨לֶק

wə·ḥê·leq

and a share

אֵין־

’ên-

not

לָהֶ֥ם

lā·hem

עוֹד֙

‘ō·wḏ

לְעוֹלָ֔ם

lə·‘ō·w·lām,

בְּכֹ֥ל

bə·ḵōl

in

אֲשֶֽׁר־

’ă·šer-

נַעֲשָׂ֖ה

na·‘ă·śāh

תַּ֥חַת

ta·ḥaṯ

. הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃

haš·šā·meš.

the sun .

– בְלֶב־

ḇə·leḇ-

with a heart –

ט֖וֹב

יֵינֶ֑ךָ

כִּ֣י

כְבָ֔ר

רָצָ֥ה

rā·ṣāh

הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים

. מַעֲשֶֽׂיךָ׃

בְּכָל־

יִהְי֥וּ

בְגָדֶ֖יךָ

– לְבָנִ֑ים

and oil .

the sun ､

of vanity –

כִּ֣י

that [is]

וּבַעֲמָ֣לְךָ֔

ū·ḇa·‘ă·mā·lə·ḵā,

and in the labor

אֲשֶׁר־

אַתָּ֥ה

’at·tāh

עָמֵ֖ל

‘ā·mêl

תַּ֥חַת

ta·ḥaṯ

. הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃

haš·šā·meš.

the sun .

כֹּ֠ל

תִּמְצָ֧א

יָֽדְךָ֛

､ לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת

with your might –

עֲשֵׂ֑ה

‘ă·śêh;

do [it]

כִּי֩

[there is] no

､ מַעֲשֶׂ֤ה

ma·‘ă·śeh

work ､

､ וְחֶשְׁבּוֹן֙

wə·ḥeš·bō·wn

or device ､

､ וְדַ֣עַת

wə·ḏa·‘aṯ

or knowledge ､

､ וְחָכְמָ֔ה

wə·ḥā·ḵə·māh,

or wisdom ､

､ בִּשְׁא֕וֹל

in the grave ､

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

אַתָּ֖ה

’at·tāh

הֹלֵ֥ךְ

the race

､ לַגִּבּוֹרִ֣ים

lag·gib·bō·w·rîm

to the strong ､

הַמִּלְחָמָ֗ה

ham·mil·ḥā·māh,

וְ֠גַם

wə·ḡam

and

לֹ֣א

lō

､ לַחֲכָמִ֥ים

la·ḥă·ḵā·mîm

to the wise ､

לֶ֙חֶם֙

le·ḥem

וְגַ֨ם

wə·ḡam

and

לֹ֤א

to men of understanding ､

עֹ֔שֶׁר

to men of skill –

הָאֲחֻז֖וֹת

– בַּפָּ֑ח

כָּהֵ֗ם

יֽוּקָשִׁים֙

the sons

הָֽאָדָ֔ם

of men

､ לְעֵ֣ת

in an time ､

Wisdom Better than Strength

to me .

､ עִ֣יר

[There was] a city ､

קְטַנָּ֔ה

qə·ṭan·nāh,

וַאֲנָשִׁ֥ים

wa·’ă·nā·šîm

and with men

בָּ֖הּ

bāh

in it

מְעָ֑ט

mə·‘āṭ;

וּבָֽא־

ū·ḇā-

and came

אֵלֶ֜יהָ

’ê·le·hā

מֶ֤לֶךְ

me·leḵ

גָּדוֹל֙

gā·ḏō·wl

וְסָבַ֣ב

wə·sā·ḇaḇ

אֹתָ֔הּ

’ō·ṯāh,

it

וּבָנָ֥ה

ū·ḇā·nāh

עָלֶ֖יהָ

‘ā·le·hā

מְצוֹדִ֥ים

mə·ṣō·w·ḏîm

. גְּדֹלִֽים׃

gə·ḏō·lîm.

וּמָ֣צָא

ū·mā·ṣā

And there was found

בָ֗הּ

ḇāh,

in it

､ אִ֤ישׁ

’îš

a man ､

מִסְכֵּן֙

mis·kên

חָכָ֔ם

ḥā·ḵām,

וּמִלַּט־

ū·mil·laṭ-

ה֥וּא

hū

he

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

– הָעִ֖יר

hā·‘îr

the city –

בְּחָכְמָת֑וֹ

bə·ḥā·ḵə·mā·ṯōw;

וְאָדָם֙

wə·’ā·ḏām

לֹ֣א

lō

no

זָכַ֔ר

zā·ḵar,

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הָאִ֥ישׁ

hā·’îš

הַמִּסְכֵּ֖ן

ham·mis·kên

. הַהּֽוּא׃‪‬‪‬

ha·hū.

וְאָמַ֣רְתִּי

wə·’ā·mar·tî

And said

､ אָ֔נִי

’ā·nî,

I ､

טוֹבָ֥ה

ṭō·w·ḇāh

חָכְמָ֖ה

ḥāḵ·māh

. מִגְּבוּרָ֑ה

mig·gə·ḇū·rāh;

than strength .

וְחָכְמַ֤ת

wə·ḥā·ḵə·maṯ

And nevertheless wisdom

הַמִּסְכֵּן֙

ham·mis·kên

of the poor man

､ בְּזוּיָ֔ה

bə·zū·yāh,

[is] despised ､

וּדְבָרָ֖יו

ū·ḏə·ḇā·rāw

אֵינָ֥ם

’ê·nām

not

. נִשְׁמָעִֽים׃

niš·mā·‘îm.

דִּבְרֵ֣י

diḇ·rê

חֲכָמִ֔ים

ḥă·ḵā·mîm,

of the wise

בְּנַ֖חַת

bə·na·ḥaṯ

[spoken] quietly

נִשְׁמָעִ֑ים

niš·mā·‘îm;

[should be] heard

מִזַּעֲקַ֥ת

miz·za·‘ă·qaṯ

Rather than the shout

מוֹשֵׁ֖ל

mō·wō·šêl

of a ruler

. בַּכְּסִילִֽים׃

bak·kə·sî·lîm.

of fools .

טוֹבָ֥ה

ṭō·w·ḇāh

חָכְמָ֖ה

ḥāḵ·māh

מִכְּלֵ֣י

mik·kə·lê

､ קְרָ֑ב

qə·rāḇ;

of war ､

וְחוֹטֶ֣א

wə·ḥō·w·ṭe

אֶחָ֔ד

’e·ḥāḏ,

יְאַבֵּ֥ד

yə·’ab·bêḏ

טוֹבָ֥ה

ṭō·w·ḇāh

. הַרְבֵּֽה׃
