to his sons ､

؟ תִּתְרָאֽוּ׃

do you look at one another ؟

､ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר

way·yō·mer

and he said ､

､ הִנֵּ֣ה

hin·nêh

שָׁמַ֔עְתִּי

šā·ma‘·tî,

כִּ֥י

יֶשׁ־

yeš-

שֶׁ֖בֶר

še·ḇer

– בְּמִצְרָ֑יִם

bə·miṣ·rā·yim;

in Egypt –

רְדוּ־

rə·ḏū-

､ שָׁ֙מָּה֙

šām·māh

to that place ､

וְשִׁבְרוּ־

wə·šiḇ·rū-

and buy

לָ֣נוּ

lā·nū

for us

– מִשָּׁ֔ם

miš·šām,

､ וְנִחְיֶ֖ה

wə·niḥ·yeh

that we may live ､

וְלֹ֥א

wə·lō

and not

. נָמֽוּת׃

nā·mūṯ.

וַיֵּרְד֥וּ

way·yê·rə·ḏū

אֲחֵֽי־

’ă·ḥê-

יוֹסֵ֖ף

עֲשָׂרָ֑ה

‘ă·śā·rāh;

לִשְׁבֹּ֥ר

. מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃

וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙

And went

בְּנֵ֣י

the sons

יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל

yiś·rā·’êl,

לִשְׁבֹּ֖ר

liš·bōr

בְּת֣וֹךְ

bə·ṯō·wḵ

､ הַבָּאִ֑ים

hab·bā·’îm;

those who journeyed ､

כִּֽי־

kî-

הָיָ֥ה

hā·yāh

הָרָעָ֖ב

hā·rā·‘āḇ

בְּאֶ֥רֶץ

bə·’e·reṣ

in the land

. כְּנָֽעַן׃

kə·nā·‘an.

וְיוֹסֵ֗ף

wə·yō·w·sêp̄,

ה֚וּא

hū

הַשַּׁלִּ֣יט

haš·šal·lîṭ

עַל־

‘al-

､ הָאָ֔רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ,

the land ､

ה֥וּא

hū

[and] it [was]

הַמַּשְׁבִּ֖יר

ham·maš·bîr

לְכָל־

lə·ḵāl

to all

עַ֣ם

‘am

. הָאָ֑רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ;

of the land .

וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙

way·yā·ḇō·’ū

And came

אֲחֵ֣י

’ă·ḥê

､ יוֹסֵ֔ף

yō·w·sêp̄,

of Joseph ､

וַיִּשְׁתַּֽחֲווּ־

way·yiš·ta·ḥă·wū-

ל֥וֹ

lōw

אַפַּ֖יִם

’ap·pa·yim

with [their] faces

. אָֽרְצָה׃

’ā·rə·ṣāh.

to the ground .

וַיַּ֥רְא

way·yar

And saw

יוֹסֵ֛ף

yō·w·sêp̄

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

אֶחָ֖יו

’e·ḥāw

､ וַיַּכִּרֵ֑ם

way·yak·ki·rêm;

and recognized them ､

וַיִּתְנַכֵּ֨ר

way·yiṯ·nak·kêr

but he acted as a stranger

､ אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם

’ă·lê·hem

to them ､

וַיְדַבֵּ֧ר

way·ḏab·bêr

אִתָּ֣ם

’it·tām

. קָשׁ֗וֹת

qā·šō·wṯ,

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר

way·yō·mer

and he said

אֲלֵהֶם֙

’ă·lê·hem

מֵאַ֣יִן

mê·’a·yin

בָּאתֶ֔ם

bā·ṯem,

､ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ

way·yō·mə·rū,

and they said ､

מֵאֶ֥רֶץ

mê·’e·reṣ

כְּנַ֖עַן

kə·na·‘an

לִשְׁבָּר־

liš·bār-

to buy

. אֹֽכֶל׃

’ō·ḵel.

וַיַּכֵּ֥ר

way·yak·kêr

יוֹסֵ֖ף

yō·w·sêp̄

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ אֶחָ֑יו

’e·ḥāw;

his brothers ､

וְהֵ֖ם

wə·hêm

but they

לֹ֥א

. הִכִּרֻֽהוּ׃

did recognize him .

וַיִּזְכֹּ֣ר

יוֹסֵ֔ף

הַחֲלֹמ֔וֹת

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

חָלַ֖ם

– לָהֶ֑ם

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר

and he said

אֲלֵהֶם֙

מְרַגְּלִ֣ים

mə·rag·gə·lîm

! אַתֶּ֔ם

’at·tem,

לִרְא֛וֹת

lir·’ō·wṯ

to see

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

עֶרְוַ֥ת

‘er·waṯ

הָאָ֖רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ

of the land

. בָּאתֶֽם׃

bā·ṯem.

you have come .

וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ

way·yō·mə·rū

אֵלָ֖יו

’ê·lāw

to him

､ לֹ֣א

lō

No ､

､ אֲדֹנִ֑י

’ă·ḏō·nî;

my lord ､

וַעֲבָדֶ֥יךָ

wa·‘ă·ḇā·ḏe·ḵā

but your servants

בָּ֖אוּ

לִשְׁבָּר־

liš·bār-

to buy

. אֹֽכֶל׃

’ō·ḵel.

כֻּלָּ֕נוּ

kul·lā·nū

בְּנֵ֥י

bə·nê

אִישׁ־

’îš-

of man

אֶחָ֖ד

’e·ḥāḏ

– נָ֑חְנוּ

nā·ḥə·nū;

we [are] –

כֵּנִ֣ים

kê·nîm

אֲנַ֔חְנוּ

’ă·naḥ·nū,

we [are]

לֹא־

lō-

not

הָי֥וּ

hā·yū

עֲבָדֶ֖יךָ

‘ă·ḇā·ḏe·ḵā

. מְרַגְּלִֽים׃

mə·rag·gə·lîm.

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר

But he said

､ אֲלֵהֶ֑ם

’ă·lê·hem;

to them ､

לֹ֕א

כִּֽי־

but

עֶרְוַ֥ת

הָאָ֖רֶץ

of the land

בָּאתֶ֥ם

. לִרְאֽוֹת׃

to see .

､ וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ

way·yō·mə·rū,

And they said ､

שְׁנֵ֣ים

šə·nêm

עָשָׂר֩

‘ā·śār

[and] ten

עֲבָדֶ֨יךָ

‘ă·ḇā·ḏe·ḵā

､ אַחִ֧ים ׀

’a·ḥîm

אֲנַ֛חְנוּ

’ă·naḥ·nū

we [are]

בְּנֵ֥י

bə·nê

the sons

אִישׁ־

’îš-

of man

אֶחָ֖ד

’e·ḥāḏ

בְּאֶ֣רֶץ

bə·’e·reṣ

in the land

– כְּנָ֑עַן

kə·nā·‘an;

of Canaan –

､ וְהִנֵּ֨ה

wə·hin·nêh

and in fact ､

הַקָּטֹ֤ן

haq·qā·ṭōn

the youngest [is]

אֶת־

’eṯ-

with

אָבִ֙ינוּ֙

’ā·ḇî·nū

､ הַיּ֔וֹם

hay·yō·wm,

וְהָאֶחָ֖ד

wə·hā·’e·ḥāḏ

and one [is]

. אֵינֶֽנּוּ׃

’ê·nen·nū.

no more .

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר

way·yō·mer

But said

אֲלֵהֶ֖ם

’ă·lê·hem

､ יוֹסֵ֑ף

yō·w·sêp̄;

ה֗וּא

hū,

it [is]

אֲשֶׁ֨ר

’ă·šer

as

דִּבַּ֧רְתִּי

dib·bar·tî

אֲלֵכֶ֛ם

’ă·lê·ḵem

to you

､ לֵאמֹ֖ר

lê·mōr

מְרַגְּלִ֥ים

mə·rag·gə·lîm

! אַתֶּֽם׃

’at·tem.

בְּזֹ֖את

bə·zōṯ

in this [manner]

: תִּבָּחֵ֑נוּ

tib·bā·ḥê·nū;

you shall be tested :

חֵ֤י

ḥê

by the life

､ פַרְעֹה֙

p̄ar·‘ōh

of Pharaoh ､

אִם־

’im-

not

תֵּצְא֣וּ

tê·ṣə·’ū

you shall go forth

､ מִזֶּ֔ה

miz·zeh,

by this ､

כִּ֧י

kî

אִם־

if

בְּב֛וֹא

bə·ḇō·w

אֲחִיכֶ֥ם

’ă·ḥî·ḵem

הַקָּטֹ֖ן

haq·qā·ṭōn

. הֵֽנָּה׃

שִׁלְח֨וּ

šil·ḥū

מִכֶּ֣ם

mik·kem

of you

אֶחָד֮

וְיִקַּ֣ח

wə·yiq·qaḥ

and let him bring

אֶת־

’eṯ-

､ אֲחִיכֶם֒

your brother ､

וְאַתֶּם֙

wə·’at·tem

and you

､ הֵאָ֣סְר֔וּ

hê·’ā·sə·rū,

shall be kept in prison ､

וְיִבָּֽחֲנוּ֙

wə·yib·bā·ḥă·nū

that may be tested

דִּבְרֵיכֶ֔ם

diḇ·rê·ḵem,

הַֽאֱמֶ֖ת

ha·’ĕ·meṯ

､ אִתְּכֶ֑ם

’it·tə·ḵem;

[is] in you ､

וְאִם־

wə·’im-

､ לֹ֕א

by the life

So he put all together

. יָמִֽים׃

yā·mîm.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And said

אֲלֵהֶ֤ם

､ יוֹסֵף֙

yō·w·sêp̄

בַּיּ֣וֹם

bay·yō·wm

on day

הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֔י

haš·šə·lî·šî,

זֹ֥את

zōṯ

､ עֲשׂ֖וּ

‘ă·śū

do ､

– וִֽחְי֑וּ

wiḥ·yū;

and live –

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

– הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים

hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm

God –

אֲנִ֥י

If

כֵּנִ֣ים

､ אַתֶּ֔ם

’at·tem,

you [are] ､

of your brothers

יֵאָסֵ֖ר

let be confined

בְּבֵ֣ית

in the house

– מִשְׁמַרְכֶ֑ם

miš·mar·ḵem;

of imprisonment –

､ וְאַתֶּם֙

wə·’at·tem

but you ､

לְכ֣וּ

lə·ḵū

go

הָבִ֔יאוּ

hā·ḇî·’ū,

שֶׁ֖בֶר

še·ḇer

רַעֲב֥וֹן

ra·‘ă·ḇō·wn

. בָּתֵּיכֶֽם׃

bāt·tê·ḵem.

of your houses .

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

And

אֲחִיכֶ֤ם

’ă·ḥî·ḵem

הַקָּטֹן֙

haq·qā·ṭōn

תָּבִ֣יאוּ

tā·ḇî·’ū

､ אֵלַ֔י

’ê·lay,

to me ､

וְיֵאָמְנ֥וּ

wə·yê·’ā·mə·nū

so will be verified

､ דִבְרֵיכֶ֖ם

ḏiḇ·rê·ḵem

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

and not

. תָמ֑וּתוּ

ṯā·mū·ṯū;

you shall die .

וַיַּעֲשׂוּ־

way·ya·‘ă·śū-

we saw

צָרַ֥ת

､ נַפְשׁ֛וֹ

of his soul ､

בְּהִתְחַֽנְנ֥וֹ

bə·hiṯ·ḥan·nōw

when he pleaded

אֵלֵ֖ינוּ

with us

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

and not

– שָׁמָ֑עְנוּ

šā·mā·‘ə·nū;

we did listen –

עַל־

‘al-

כֵּן֙

בָּ֣אָה

אֵלֵ֔ינוּ

’ê·lê·nū,

הַצָּרָ֖ה

haṣ·ṣā·rāh

. הַזֹּֽאת׃

haz·zōṯ.

וַיַּעַן֩

way·ya·‘an

רְאוּבֵ֨ן

rə·’ū·ḇên

אֹתָ֜ם

’ō·ṯām

､ לֵאמֹ֗ר

lê·mōr,

הֲלוֹא֩

hă·lō·w

did not

אָמַ֨רְתִּי

אֲלֵיכֶ֧ם ׀

to you

､ לֵאמֹ֛ר

he spoke to them .

וַיִּסֹּ֥ב

way·yis·sōḇ

And he turned himself away

מֵֽעֲלֵיהֶ֖ם

mê·‘ă·lê·hem

– וַיֵּ֑בְךְּ

way·yê·ḇək;

and wept –

וַיָּ֤שָׁב

way·yā·šāḇ

and he returned again

אֲלֵהֶם֙

’ă·lê·hem

וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר

way·ḏab·bêr

אֲלֵהֶ֔ם

’ă·lê·hem,

with them

וַיִּקַּ֤ח

way·yiq·qaḥ

and he took

מֵֽאִתָּם֙

mê·’it·tām

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ שִׁמְע֔וֹן

šim·‘ō·wn,

וַיֶּאֱסֹ֥ר

way·ye·’ĕ·sōr

אֹת֖וֹ

’ō·ṯōw

. לְעֵינֵיהֶֽם׃

כַּסְפֵּיהֶם֙

to

､ שַׂקּ֔וֹ

śaq·qōw,

וְלָתֵ֥ת

and to give

לָהֶ֛ם

lā·hem

צֵדָ֖ה

ṣê·ḏāh

. לַדָּ֑רֶךְ

lad·dā·reḵ;

for the journey .

וַיַּ֥עַשׂ

way·ya·‘aś

And he did

לָהֶ֖ם

. כֵּֽן׃

וַיִּשְׂא֥וּ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

､ שִׁבְרָ֖ם

the grain ､

עַל־

‘al-

חֲמֹרֵיהֶ֑ם

וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ

way·yê·lə·ḵū

. מִשָּֽׁם׃

miš·šām.

וַיִּפְתַּ֨ח

way·yip̄·taḥ

But as opened

הָאֶחָ֜ד

אֶת־

’eṯ-

שַׂקּ֗וֹ

śaq·qōw,

לָתֵ֥ת

lā·ṯêṯ

מִסְפּ֛וֹא

mis·pō·w

לַחֲמֹר֖וֹ

la·ḥă·mō·rōw

､ בַּמָּל֑וֹן

bam·mā·lō·wn;

at the lodging ､

וַיַּרְא֙

way·yar

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

– כַּסְפּ֔וֹ

kas·pōw,

､ וְהִנֵּה־

wə·hin·nêh-

and there ､

ה֖וּא

hū

it [was]

בְּפִ֥י

bə·p̄î

in the mouth

. אַמְתַּחְתּֽוֹ׃

’am·taḥ·tōw.

of the sack .

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר

way·yō·mer

So he said

אֶל־

’el-

､ אֶחָיו֙

his brothers ､

הוּשַׁ֣ב

hū·šaḇ

has been restored

､ כַּסְפִּ֔י

kas·pî,

my silver ､

וְגַ֖ם

wə·ḡam

and

､ הִנֵּ֣ה

hin·nêh

there it is ､

. בְאַמְתַּחְתִּ֑י

ḇə·’am·taḥ·tî;

in my sack .

וַיֵּצֵ֣א

way·yê·ṣê

And failed [them]

לִבָּ֗ם

lib·bām,

､ וַיֶּֽחֶרְד֞וּ

way·ye·ḥer·ḏū

and they were afraid ､

אִ֤ישׁ

’îš

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ אָחִיו֙

’ā·ḥîw

､ לֵאמֹ֔ר

lê·mōr,

מַה־

mah-

what [is]

זֹּ֛את

zōṯ

עָשָׂ֥ה

[that] has done

. לָֽנוּ׃

– אָבִ֑ינוּ

of our father –

הָאֶחָ֣ד

hā·’e·ḥāḏ

one [is]

､ אֵינֶ֔נּוּ

no [more] ､

וְהַקָּטֹ֥ן

wə·haq·qā·ṭōn

and the youngest

הַיּ֛וֹם

hay·yō·wm

אֶת־

’eṯ-

[is] with

in the land

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And said

אֵלֵ֗ינוּ

’ê·lê·nū,

to us

､ הָאִישׁ֙

hā·’îš

the man ､

אֲדֹנֵ֣י

’ă·ḏō·nê

､ הָאָ֔רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ,

of the country ､

בְּזֹ֣את

bə·zōṯ

אֵדַ֔ע

’ê·ḏa‘,

I will know

כִּ֥י

kî

כֵנִ֖ים

ḵê·nîm

: אַתֶּ֑ם

’at·tem;

אֲחִיכֶ֤ם

’ă·ḥî·ḵem

of your brothers

הָֽאֶחָד֙

hā·’e·ḥāḏ

הַנִּ֣יחוּ

han·nî·ḥū

､ אִתִּ֔י

’it·tî,

with me ､

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

רַעֲב֥וֹן

ra·‘ă·ḇō·wn

[food for] the famine

בָּתֵּיכֶ֖ם

bāt·tê·ḵem

of your households

קְח֥וּ

qə·ḥū

. וָלֵֽכוּ׃

wā·lê·ḵū.

and be gone .

וְ֠הָבִיאוּ

wə·hā·ḇî·’ū

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

אֲחִיכֶ֣ם

’ă·ḥî·ḵem

הַקָּטֹן֮

haq·qā·ṭōn

. אֵלַי֒

’ê·lay

to me .

וְאֵֽדְעָ֗ה

wə·’ê·ḏə·‘āh,

So I shall know

כִּ֣י

kî

לֹ֤א

lō

not

מְרַגְּלִים֙

mə·rag·gə·lîm

אַתֶּ֔ם

’at·tem,

כִּ֥י

kî

but

כֵנִ֖ים

ḵê·nîm

אַתֶּ֑ם

’at·tem;

[that] you [are]

. אֶת־

’eṯ-

- .

､ אֲחִיכֶם֙

’ă·ḥî·ḵem

your brother ､

אֶתֵּ֣ן

’et·tên

I will grant

לָכֶ֔ם

lā·ḵem,

to you

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

הָאָ֖רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ

in the land

. תִּסְחָֽרוּ׃

tis·ḥā·rū.

you may trade .

וַיְהִ֗י

way·hî,

And it came to pass

הֵ֚ם

hêm

מְרִיקִ֣ים

mə·rî·qîm

､ שַׂקֵּיהֶ֔ם

śaq·qê·hem,

their sacks ､

､ וְהִנֵּה־

wə·hin·nêh-

that surprisingly ､

אִ֥ישׁ

’îš

צְרוֹר־

ṣə·rō·wr-

כַּסְפּ֖וֹ

kas·pōw

of silver [was]

– בְּשַׂקּ֑וֹ

bə·śaq·qōw;

in his sack –

וַיִּרְא֞וּ

way·yir·’ū

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

צְרֹר֧וֹת

ṣə·rō·rō·wṯ

､ כַּסְפֵּיהֶ֛ם

kas·pê·hem

of silver ､

הֵ֥מָּה

hêm·māh

וַאֲבִיהֶ֖ם

wa·’ă·ḇî·hem

and their father

. וַיִּירָֽאוּ׃

way·yî·rā·’ū.

and they were afraid .

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And said

אֲלֵהֶם֙

’ă·lê·hem

יַעֲקֹ֣ב

ya·‘ă·qōḇ

אֲבִיהֶ֔ם

’ă·ḇî·hem,

､ אֹתִ֖י

’ō·ṯî

me ､

. שִׁכַּלְתֶּ֑ם

šik·kal·tem;

You have bereaved .

יוֹסֵ֤ף

yō·w·sêp̄

､ אֵינֶ֙נּוּ֙

’ê·nen·nū

is no [more] ､

וְשִׁמְע֣וֹן

wə·šim·‘ō·wn

､ אֵינֶ֔נּוּ

’ê·nen·nū,

is no [more] ､

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

בִּנְיָמִ֣ן

bin·yā·min

. תִּקָּ֔חוּ

tiq·qā·ḥū,

you want to take .

עָלַ֖י

‘ā·lay

הָי֥וּ

hā·yū

! כֻלָּֽנָה׃

ḵul·lā·nāh.

all these things !

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר

way·yō·mer

רְאוּבֵן֙

rə·’ū·ḇên

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ אָבִ֣יו

’ā·ḇîw

､ לֵאמֹ֔ר

lê·mōr,

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

שְׁנֵ֤י

šə·nê

my two

､ בָנַי֙

ḇā·nay

sons ､

､ תָּמִ֔ית

tā·mîṯ,

you may slay ､

אִם־

’im-

if

לֹ֥א

lō

not

אֲבִיאֶ֖נּוּ

’ă·ḇî·’en·nū

I do bring him [back]

! אֵלֶ֑יךָ

’ê·le·ḵā;

to you !

תְּנָ֤ה

tə·nāh

אֹתוֹ֙

’ō·ṯōw

עַל־

‘al-

in

､ יָדִ֔י

yā·ḏî,

my hands ､

וַאֲנִ֖י

wa·’ă·nî

and I

אֲשִׁיבֶ֥נּוּ

’ă·šî·ḇen·nū

will bring him back

. אֵלֶֽיךָ׃

’ê·le·ḵā.

to you .

､ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר

way·yō·mer

But he said ､

לֹֽא־

lō-

not

יֵרֵ֥ד

yê·rêḏ

בְּנִ֖י

bə·nî

my son

､ עִמָּכֶ֑ם

‘im·mā·ḵem;

with you ､

כִּֽי־

kî-

אָחִ֨יו

’ā·ḥîw

､ מֵ֜ת

mêṯ

is dead ､

וְה֧וּא

wə·hū

and he

לְבַדּ֣וֹ

lə·ḇad·dōw

– נִשְׁאָ֗ר

niš·’ār,

is left –

וּקְרָאָ֤הוּ

ū·qə·rā·’ā·hū

and if should befall him

אָסוֹן֙

’ā·sō·wn

בַּדֶּ֙רֶךְ֙

bad·de·reḵ

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

תֵּֽלְכוּ־

tê·lə·ḵū-

you go

､ בָ֔הּ

ḇāh,

in ､

וְהוֹרַדְתֶּ֧ם

wə·hō·w·raḏ·tem

then you would bring down

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

שֵׂיבָתִ֛י

śê·ḇā·ṯî

בְּיָג֖וֹן

bə·yā·ḡō·wn

. שְׁאֽוֹלָה׃

šə·’ō·w·lāh.

to Sheol .
