､ אִשָּׁ֔ה

וְכֹ֖ל

wə·ḵōl

and all

､ מֵבִ֣ין

mê·ḇîn

with understanding ､

לִשְׁמֹ֑עַ

liš·mō·a‘;

who [could] hear

בְּי֥וֹם

bə·yō·wm

on the day

אֶחָ֖ד

’e·ḥāḏ

לַחֹ֥דֶשׁ

la·ḥō·ḏeš

of the month

. הַשְּׁבִיעִֽי׃

haš·šə·ḇî·‘î.

וַיִּקְרָא־

way·yiq·rā-

And he read

לִפְנֵ֨י

הָרְח֜וֹב

the open square

אֲשֶׁ֣ר ׀

לִפְנֵ֣י

שַֽׁעַר־

הַמַּ֗יִם

ham·ma·yim,

מִן־

min-

הָאוֹר֙

hā·’ō·wr

עַד־

‘aḏ-

מַחֲצִ֣ית

ma·ḥă·ṣîṯ

､ הַיּ֔וֹם

hay·yō·wm,

נֶ֛גֶד

ne·ḡeḏ

הָאֲנָשִׁ֥ים

hā·’ă·nā·šîm

the men

､ וְהַנָּשִׁ֖ים

wə·han·nā·šîm

and the women ､

– וְהַמְּבִינִ֑ים

wə·ham·mə·ḇî·nîm;

and those who could understand –

וְאָזְנֵ֥י

wə·’ā·zə·nê

and the ears

כָל־

ḵāl

of all

הָעָ֖ם

hā·‘ām

אֶל־

’el-

[were attentive] to

סֵ֥פֶר

sê·p̄er

. הַתּוֹרָֽה׃

hat·tō·w·rāh.

of the Law .

וַֽיַּעֲמֹ֞ד

way·ya·‘ă·mōḏ

עֶזְרָ֣א

‘ez·rā

הַסֹּפֵ֗ר

has·sō·p̄êr,

עַֽל־

‘al-

on

מִגְדַּל־

miḡ·dal-

､ עֵץ֮

‘êṣ

of wood ､

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

עָשׂ֣וּ

‘ā·śū

– לַדָּבָר֒

lad·dā·ḇār

for the purpose –

וַיַּֽעֲמֹ֣ד

way·ya·‘ă·mōḏ

אֶצְל֡וֹ

’eṣ·lōw

､ מַתִּתְיָ֡ה

mat·tiṯ·yāh

､ וְשֶׁ֡מַע

wə·še·ma‘

and Shema ､

､ וַ֠עֲנָיָה

wa·‘ă·nā·yāh

and Anaiah ､

､ וְאוּרִיָּ֧ה

wə·’ū·rî·yāh

and Urijah ､

､ וְחִלְקִיָּ֛ה

wə·ḥil·qî·yāh

and Hilkiah ､

､ וּמַעֲשֵׂיָ֖ה

ū·ma·‘ă·śê·yāh

and Maaseiah ､

עַל־

‘al-

at

– יְמִינ֑וֹ

yə·mî·nōw;

his right hand –

､ וּמִשְּׂמֹאל֗וֹ

ū·miś·śə·mō·lōw,

and at his left hand ､

､ פְּ֠דָיָה

pə·ḏā·yāh

､ וּמִֽישָׁאֵ֧ל

ū·mî·šā·’êl

and Mishael ､

､ וּמַלְכִּיָּ֛ה

ū·mal·kî·yāh

and Malchijah ､

､ וְחָשֻׁ֥ם

wə·ḥā·šum

and Hashum ､

､ וְחַשְׁבַּדָּ֖נָה

wə·ḥaš·bad·dā·nāh

and Hashbadana ､

､ זְכַרְיָ֥ה

zə·ḵar·yāh

. מְשֻׁלָּֽם׃

mə·šul·lām.

[and] Meshullam .

עֶזְרָ֤א

‘ez·rā

הַסֵּ֙פֶר֙

has·sê·p̄er

the book

לְעֵינֵ֣י

lə·‘ê·nê

in the sight

כָל־

ḵāl

of all

– הָעָ֔ם

hā·‘ām,

the people –

כִּֽי־

kî-

מֵעַ֥ל

mê·‘al

כָּל־

kāl-

הָעָ֖ם

hā·‘ām

הָיָ֑ה

hā·yāh;

he was [standing]

וּכְפִתְח֖וֹ

ū·ḵə·p̄iṯ·ḥōw

and when he opened it

– עָֽמְד֥וּ

‘ā·mə·ḏū

stood up –

כָל־

ḵāl

. הָעָֽם׃

hā·‘ām.

the people .

וַיְבָ֣רֶךְ

way·ḇā·reḵ

עֶזְרָ֔א

‘ez·rā,

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ יְהוָ֥ה

Yah·weh

. הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים

hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm

הַגָּד֑וֹל

hag·gā·ḏō·wl;

､ וַיַּֽעֲנ֨וּ

way·ya·‘ă·nū

and answered ､

כָל־

ḵāl

הָעָ֜ם

hā·‘ām

אָמֵ֤ן ׀

’ā·mên

､ אָמֵן֙

’ā·mên

Amen ､

בְּמֹ֣עַל

bə·mō·‘al

while lifting up

– יְדֵיהֶ֔ם

yə·ḏê·hem,

their hands –

וַיִּקְּד֧וּ

way·yiq·qə·ḏū

and they bowed their heads

וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲוֻּ֛

way·yiš·ta·ḥă·wu

לַיהוָ֖ה

Yah·weh

אַפַּ֥יִם

’ap·pa·yim

with [their] faces

. אָֽרְצָה׃

’ā·rə·ṣāh.

to the ground .

､ וְיֵשׁ֡וּעַ

wə·yê·šū·a‘

And Jeshua ､

､ וּבָנִ֡י

ū·ḇā·nî

and Bani ､

､ וְשֵׁרֵ֥בְיָ֣ה ׀

wə·šê·rê·ḇə·yāh

and Sherebiah ､

､ יָמִ֡ין

yā·mîn

､ עַקּ֡וּב

‘aq·qūḇ

､ שַׁבְּתַ֣י ׀

šab·bə·ṯay

､ הֽוֹדִיָּ֡ה

hō·w·ḏî·yāh

､ מַעֲשֵׂיָ֡ה

ma·‘ă·śê·yāh

､ קְלִיטָ֣א

qə·lî·ṭā

､ עֲזַרְיָה֩

‘ă·zar·yāh

､ יוֹזָבָ֨ד

yō·w·zā·ḇāḏ

､ חָנָ֤ן

ḥā·nān

､ פְּלָאיָה֙

pə·lā·yāh

､ וְהַלְוִיִּ֔ם

wə·hal·wî·yim,

and the Levites ､

מְבִינִ֥ים

mə·ḇî·nîm

helped to understand

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הָעָ֖ם

hā·‘ām

– לַתּוֹרָ֑ה

lat·tō·w·rāh;

the Law –

וְהָעָ֖ם

wə·hā·‘ām

and the people

עַל־

‘al-

[stood] in

. עָמְדָֽם׃

‘ā·mə·ḏām.

וַֽיִּקְרְא֥וּ

way·yiq·rə·’ū

בַסֵּ֛פֶר

ḇas·sê·p̄er

בְּתוֹרַ֥ת

bə·ṯō·w·raṯ

in the Law

הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים

hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm

of God

､ מְפֹרָ֑שׁ

mə·p̄ō·rāš;

וְשׂ֣וֹם

wə·śō·wm

､ שֶׂ֔כֶל

śe·ḵel,

the sense ､

וַיָּבִ֖ינוּ

way·yā·ḇî·nū

and helped [them] to understand

. בַּמִּקְרָֽא׃

bam·miq·rā.

This Day is Holy

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And said

､ נְחֶמְיָ֣ה

nə·ḥem·yāh

ה֣וּא

hū

he [was]

､ הַתִּרְשָׁ֡תָא

hat·tir·šā·ṯā

the governor ､

וְעֶזְרָ֣א

wə·‘ez·rā

and Ezra

הַכֹּהֵ֣ן ׀

hak·kō·hên

､ הַסֹּפֵ֡ר

has·sō·p̄êr

[and] scribe ､

וְהַלְוִיִּם֩

wə·hal·wî·yim

and the Levites

הַמְּבִינִ֨ים

ham·mə·ḇî·nîm

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הָעָ֜ם

hā·‘ām

the people ､

לְכָל־

lə·ḵāl

to all

､ הָעָ֗ם

hā·‘ām,

the people ､

הַיּ֤וֹם

hay·yō·wm

קָדֹֽשׁ־

qā·ḏōš-

[is] holy

הוּא֙

hū

לַיהוָ֣ה

Yah·weh

– אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֔ם

’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem,

､ אַל־

’al-

not ､

תִּֽתְאַבְּל֖וּ

tiṯ·’ab·bə·lū

וְאַל־

wə·’al-

. תִּבְכּ֑וּ

tiḇ·kū;

כִּ֤י

kî

､ בוֹכִים֙

ḇō·w·ḵîm

wept ､

כָּל־

kāl-

הָעָ֔ם

hā·‘ām,

כְּשָׁמְעָ֖ם

kə·šā·mə·‘ām

when they heard

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

דִּבְרֵ֥י

diḇ·rê

. הַתּוֹרָֽה׃

hat·tō·w·rāh.

of the Law .

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And he said

לָהֶ֡ם

lā·hem

לְכוּ֩

lə·ḵū

אִכְל֨וּ

’iḵ·lū

､ מַשְׁמַנִּ֜ים

maš·man·nîm

the fat ､

וּשְׁת֣וּ

ū·šə·ṯū

､ מַֽמְתַקִּ֗ים

mam·ṯaq·qîm,

the sweet ､

וְשִׁלְח֤וּ

wə·šil·ḥū

and send

מָנוֹת֙

mā·nō·wṯ

לְאֵ֣ין

lə·’ên

– נָכ֣וֹן

nā·ḵō·wn

whom is prepared –

ל֔וֹ

lōw,

כִּֽי־

kî-

קָד֥וֹשׁ

qā·ḏō·wōš

הַיּ֖וֹם

hay·yō·wm

[this] day [is]

לַאֲדֹנֵ֑ינוּ

la·’ă·ḏō·nê·nū;

וְאַל־

wə·’al-

and not

– תֵּ֣עָצֵ֔בוּ

tê·‘ā·ṣê·ḇū,

do sorrow –

כִּֽי־

kî-

חֶדְוַ֥ת

ḥeḏ·waṯ

the joy

יְהוָ֖ה

Yah·weh

הִ֥יא

hî

is

. מָֽעֻזְּכֶֽם׃

mā·‘uz·zə·ḵem.

your strength .

וְהַלְוִיִּ֞ם

wə·hal·wî·yim

So the Levites

מַחְשִׁ֤ים

maḥ·šîm

לְכָל־

lə·ḵāl

､ הָעָם֙

hā·‘ām

the people ､

､ לֵאמֹ֣ר

lê·mōr

､ הַ֔סּוּ

has·sū,

Be still ､

כִּ֥י

kî

הַיּ֖וֹם

hay·yō·wm

the day [is]

– קָדֹ֑שׁ

qā·ḏōš;

holy –

וְאַל־

wə·’al-

and not

. תֵּעָצֵֽבוּ׃

tê·‘ā·ṣê·ḇū.

do be grieved .

וַיֵּלְכ֨וּ

way·yê·lə·ḵū

And went their way

כָל־

ḵāl

הָעָ֜ם

hā·‘ām

､ לֶאֱכֹ֤ל

le·’ĕ·ḵōl

to eat ､

､ וְלִשְׁתּוֹת֙

wə·liš·tō·wṯ

and drink ､

וּלְשַׁלַּ֣ח

ū·lə·šal·laḥ

and to send

､ מָנ֔וֹת

mā·nō·wṯ,

וְלַעֲשׂ֖וֹת

wə·la·‘ă·śō·wṯ

and

､ שִׂמְחָ֣ה

śim·ḥāh

גְדוֹלָ֑ה

ḡə·ḏō·w·lāh;

כִּ֤י

kî

הֵבִ֙ינוּ֙

hê·ḇî·nū

they understood

בַּדְּבָרִ֔ים

bad·də·ḇā·rîm,

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

הוֹדִ֖יעוּ

hō·w·ḏî·‘ū

. לָהֶֽם׃

lā·hem.

to them .

The Feast of Booths

וּבַיּ֣וֹם

And on the day

הַשֵּׁנִ֡י

haš·šê·nî

נֶאֶסְפוּ֩

ne·’es·p̄ū

רָאשֵׁ֨י

rā·šê

הָאָב֜וֹת

hā·’ā·ḇō·wṯ

of the fathers' [houses]

לְכָל־

lə·ḵāl

of all

､ הָעָ֗ם

hā·‘ām,

the people ､

､ הַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙

hak·kō·hă·nîm

the with priests ､

､ וְהַלְוִיִּ֔ם

wə·hal·wî·yim,

and Levites ､

אֶל־

’el-

to

עֶזְרָ֖א

‘ez·rā

､ הַסֹּפֵ֑ר

has·sō·p̄êr;

the scribe ､

וּלְהַשְׂכִּ֖יל

ū·lə·haś·kîl

and in order to understand

the sons

during the feast

בַּחֹ֥דֶשׁ

of the month

. הַשְּׁבִיעִֽי׃

וַאֲשֶׁ֣ר

they should announce

וְיַעֲבִ֨ירוּ

בְּכָל־

､ עָרֵיהֶם֮

their cities ､

､ וּבִירוּשָׁלִַ֣ם

and in Jerusalem ､

､ לֵאמֹר֒

go out

､ הָהָ֗ר

hā·hār,

to the mountain ､

וְהָבִ֙יאוּ֙

wə·hā·ḇî·’ū

､ עֲלֵי־

‘ă·lê-

זַ֙יִת֙

za·yiṯ

､ וַעֲלֵי־

wa·‘ă·lê-

and branches ､

עֵ֣ץ

‘êṣ

of

שֶׁ֔מֶן

še·men,

､ וַעֲלֵ֤י

wa·‘ă·lê

and branches ､

הֲדַס֙

hă·ḏas

､ וַעֲלֵ֣י

wa·‘ă·lê

and branches ､

תְמָרִ֔ים

ṯə·mā·rîm,

וַעֲלֵ֖י

wa·‘ă·lê

､ עֵ֣ץ

‘êṣ

of trees ､

עָבֹ֑ת

‘ā·ḇōṯ;

לַעֲשֹׂ֥ת

la·‘ă·śōṯ

､ סֻכֹּ֖ת

suk·kōṯ

. כַּכָּתֽוּב׃

kak·kā·ṯūḇ.

as [it is] written .

And went out ､

הָעָם֮

hā·‘ām

וַיָּבִיאוּ֒

way·yā·ḇî·’ū

and brought [them]

וַיַּעֲשׂוּ֩

way·ya·‘ă·śū

and made

לָהֶ֨ם

lā·hem

､ סֻכּ֜וֹת

suk·kō·wṯ

אִ֤ישׁ

’îš

עַל־

‘al-

on

､ גַּגּוֹ֙

gag·gōw

the roof of his house ､

､ וּבְחַצְרֹ֣תֵיהֶ֔ם

ū·ḇə·ḥaṣ·rō·ṯê·hem,

or in their courtyards ､

וּבְחַצְר֖וֹת

ū·ḇə·ḥaṣ·rō·wṯ

or the courts

בֵּ֣ית

bêṯ

of the house

､ הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים

hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm;

of God ､

וּבִרְחוֹב֙

ū·ḇir·ḥō·wḇ

and in the open square

､ שַׁ֣עַר

ša·‘ar

of Gate ､

הַמַּ֔יִם

ham·ma·yim,

וּבִרְח֖וֹב

ū·ḇir·ḥō·wḇ

and in the open square

שַׁ֥עַר

ša·‘ar

of the Gate

. אֶפְרָֽיִם׃

’ep̄·rā·yim.

וַיַּֽעֲשׂ֣וּ

way·ya·‘ă·śū

כָֽל־

הַ֠קָּהָל

haq·qā·hāl

הַשָּׁבִ֨ים

haš·šā·ḇîm

of those who had returned

מִן־

min-

הַשְּׁבִ֥י ׀

haš·šə·ḇî

､ סֻכּוֹת֮

suk·kō·wṯ

וַיֵּשְׁב֣וּ

way·yê·šə·ḇū

and sat

– בַסֻּכּוֹת֒

ḇas·suk·kō·wṯ

under the booths –

כִּ֣י

kî

לֹֽא־

lō-

not

עָשׂ֡וּ

‘ā·śū

מִימֵי֩

mî·mê

יֵשׁ֨וּעַ

yê·šū·a‘

בִּן־

bin-

the son

נ֥וּן

nūn

of Nun

. כֵּן֙

so .

בְּנֵ֣י

bə·nê

The sons

יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל

yiś·rā·’êl,

עַ֖ד

‘aḏ

הַיּ֣וֹם

hay·yō·wm

הַה֑וּא

ha·hū;

וַתְּהִ֥י

wat·tə·hî

שִׂמְחָ֖ה

śim·ḥāh

גְּדוֹלָ֥ה

gə·ḏō·w·lāh

. מְאֹֽד׃

mə·’ōḏ.

וַ֠יִּקְרָא

way·yiq·rā

And he read

בְּסֵ֨פֶר

bə·sê·p̄er

תּוֹרַ֤ת

tō·w·raṯ

of the Law

. הָאֱלֹהִים֙

hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm

of God .

י֣וֹם ׀

yō·wm

､ בְּי֔וֹם

bə·yō·wm,

by day ､

מִן־

min-

הַיּוֹם֙

hay·yō·wm

the day

הָֽרִאשׁ֔וֹן

hā·ri·šō·wn,

עַ֖ד

‘aḏ

､ הַיּ֣וֹם

hay·yō·wm

the day ､

הָאַחֲר֑וֹן

hā·’a·ḥă·rō·wn;

וַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־

way·ya·‘ă·śū-

חָג֙

ḥāḡ

שִׁבְעַ֣ת

šiḇ·‘aṯ

– יָמִ֔ים

yā·mîm,

days –

וּבַיּ֧וֹם

ū·ḇay·yō·wm

and on the day

הַשְּׁמִינִ֛י

haš·šə·mî·nî

､ עֲצֶ֖רֶת

‘ă·ṣe·reṯ

[there was] a sacred assembly ､

. כַּמִּשְׁפָּֽט׃

kam·miš·pāṭ.

according to the [prescribed] manner .
