The Beginning of Knowledge

מִ֭שְׁלֵי

miš·lê

שְׁלֹמֹ֣ה

šə·lō·mōh

בֶן־

ḇen-

､ דָּוִ֑ד

dā·wiḏ;

of David ､

מֶ֝֗לֶךְ

me·leḵ,

– יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

yiś·rā·’êl.

of Israel –

לָדַ֣עַת

lā·ḏa·‘aṯ

חָכְמָ֣ה

ḥāḵ·māh

– וּמוּסָ֑ר

ū·mū·sār;

and instruction –

לְ֝הָבִ֗ין

lə·hā·ḇîn,

אִמְרֵ֥י

’im·rê

– בִינָֽה׃

ḇî·nāh.

of understanding –

לָ֭קַחַת

lā·qa·ḥaṯ

מוּסַ֣ר

mū·sar

the instruction

､ הַשְׂכֵּ֑ל

haś·kêl;

of wisdom ､

､ צֶ֥דֶק

ṣe·ḏeq

､ וּ֝מִשְׁפָּ֗ט

ū·miš·pāṭ,

and judgment ､

– וּמֵישָׁרִֽים׃

ū·mê·šā·rîm.

and equity –

לָתֵ֣ת

lā·ṯêṯ

､ לִפְתָאיִ֣ם

lip̄·ṯā·yim

to the simple ､

עָרְמָ֑ה

‘ā·rə·māh;

לְ֝נַ֗עַר

lə·na·‘ar,

to the young man

דַּ֣עַת

da·‘aṯ

. וּמְזִמָּֽה׃

ū·mə·zim·māh.

and discretion .

､ יִשְׁמַ֣ע

yiš·ma‘

Will hear ､

חָ֭כָם

ḥā·ḵām

וְי֣וֹסֶף

wə·yō·w·sep̄

– לֶ֑קַח

le·qaḥ;

וְ֝נָב֗וֹן

wə·nā·ḇō·wn,

and a man of understanding

– תַּחְבֻּל֥וֹת

taḥ·bu·lō·wṯ

wise counsel –

. יִקְנֶֽה׃

yiq·neh.

will attain .

לְהָבִ֣ין

lə·hā·ḇîn

､ מָ֭שָׁל

mā·šāl

– וּמְלִיצָ֑ה

ū·mə·lî·ṣāh;

and an enigma –

דִּבְרֵ֥י

diḇ·rê

､ חֲ֝כָמִ֗ים

ḥă·ḵā·mîm,

of the wise ､

. וְחִידֹתָֽם׃

wə·ḥî·ḏō·ṯām.

and their riddles .

יִרְאַ֣ת

yir·’aṯ

The fear

יְ֭הוָה

Yah·weh

רֵאשִׁ֣ית

rê·šîṯ

[is] the beginning

– דָּ֑עַת

dā·‘aṯ;

of knowledge –

חָכְמָ֥ה

ḥāḵ·māh

. וּ֝מוּסָ֗ר

ū·mū·sār,

and instruction .

אֱוִילִ֥ים

’ĕ·wî·lîm

. בָּֽזוּ׃

bā·zū.

[But] despise .

The Enticement of Sin

שְׁמַ֣ע

､ בְּ֭נִי

bə·nî

My son ､

מוּסַ֣ר

mū·sar

the instruction

､ אָבִ֑יךָ

’ā·ḇî·ḵā;

of your father ､

וְאַל־

wə·’al-

and not

תִּ֝טֹּ֗שׁ

tiṭ·ṭōš,

תּוֹרַ֥ת

tō·w·raṯ

the law

– אִמֶּֽךָ׃

’im·me·ḵā.

of your mother –

כִּ֤י ׀

kî

לִוְיַ֤ת

liw·yaṯ

חֵ֓ן

ḥên

הֵ֬ם

hêm

they [will be]

､ לְרֹאשֶׁ֑ךָ

lə·rō·še·ḵā;

on your head ､

וַ֝עֲנָקִ֗ים

wa·‘ă·nā·qîm,

. לְגַרְגְּרֹתֶֽיךָ׃

lə·ḡar·gə·rō·ṯe·ḵā.

about your neck .

､ בְּנִ֡י

bə·nî

My son ､

אִם־

’im-

if

יְפַתּ֥וּךָ

yə·p̄at·tū·ḵā

חַ֝טָּאִ֗ים

ḥaṭ·ṭā·’îm,

אַל־

’al-

not

. תֹּבֵֽא׃

tō·ḇê.

אִם־

’im-

If

､ יֹאמְרוּ֮

yō·mə·rū

לְכָ֪ה

lə·ḵāh

אִ֫תָּ֥נוּ

’it·tā·nū

with us

נֶאֶרְבָ֥ה

ne·’er·ḇāh

let us lie in wait

､ לְדָ֑ם

lə·ḏām;

to [shed] blood ､

נִצְפְּנָ֖ה

niṣ·pə·nāh

let us lurk secretly

לְנָקִ֣י

lə·nā·qî

for the innocent

– חִנָּֽם׃

ḥin·nām.

without cause –

נִ֭בְלָעֵם

niḇ·lā·‘êm

let us swallow them

– כִּשְׁא֣וֹל

kiš·’ō·wl

חַיִּ֑ים

ḥay·yîm;

､ וּ֝תְמִימִ֗ים

ū·ṯə·mî·mîm,

and whole ､

כְּי֣וֹרְדֵי

kə·yō·wr·ḏê

like those who go down to

– בֽוֹר׃

ḇō·wr.

the Pit –

כָּל־

kāl-

､ ה֣וֹן

hō·wn

[kinds] of possessions ､

יָקָ֣ר

yā·qār

נִמְצָ֑א

nim·ṣā;

נְמַלֵּ֖א

nə·mal·lê

בָתֵּ֣ינוּ

ḇāt·tê·nū

– שָׁלָֽל׃

šā·lāl.

with spoil –

גּ֭וֹרָ֣לְךָ

gō·w·rā·lə·ḵā

תַּפִּ֣יל

tap·pîl

בְּתוֹכֵ֑נוּ

bə·ṯō·w·ḵê·nū;

､ כִּ֥יס

kîs

אֶ֝חָ֗ד

’e·ḥāḏ,

יִהְיֶ֥ה

yih·yeh

. לְכֻלָּֽנוּ׃

lə·ḵul·lā·nū.

us all .

､ בְּנִ֗י

bə·nî,

My son ､

אַל־

’al-

not

תֵּלֵ֣ךְ

tê·lêḵ

בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ

bə·ḏe·reḵ

in the way

אִתָּ֑ם

’it·tām;

with them

מְנַ֥ע

mə·na‘

רַ֝גְלְךָ֗

raḡ·lə·ḵā,

､ מִנְּתִיבָתָֽם׃

min·nə·ṯî·ḇā·ṯām.

from their path ､

כִּ֣י

kî

רַ֭גְלֵיהֶם

raḡ·lê·hem

､ לָרַ֣ע

lā·ra‘

to evil ､

יָר֑וּצוּ

yā·rū·ṣū;

וִֽ֝ימַהֲר֗וּ

wî·ma·hă·rū,

and they make haste

לִשְׁפָּךְ־

liš·pāḵ-

. דָּֽם׃

dām.

כִּֽי־

kî-

חִ֭נָּם

ḥin·nām

מְזֹרָ֣ה

mə·zō·rāh

הָרָ֑שֶׁת

hā·rā·šeṯ;

the net

בְּ֝עֵינֵ֗י

bə·‘ê·nê,

in the sight

כָל־

ḵāl

of any

בַּ֥עַל‪‬

ba·‘al

. כָּנָֽף׃

kā·nāp̄.

וְ֭הֵם

wə·hêm

But they

– לְדָמָ֣ם

lə·ḏā·mām

for their [own] blood –

יֶאֱרֹ֑בוּ

ye·’ĕ·rō·ḇū;

יִ֝צְפְּנ֗וּ

yiṣ·pə·nū,

they lurk secretly

. לְנַפְשֹׁתָֽם׃

lə·nap̄·šō·ṯām.

for their [own] lives .

כֵּ֗ן

kên,

So

אָ֭רְחוֹת

’ā·rə·ḥō·wṯ

[are] the ways

כָּל־

kāl-

בֹּ֣צֵֽעַ

bō·ṣê·a‘

who is greedy for

– בָּ֑צַע

bā·ṣa‘;

gain –

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

נֶ֖פֶשׁ

ne·p̄eš

the life

בְּעָלָ֣יו

bə·‘ā·lāw

. יִקָּֽח׃

yiq·qāḥ.

it takes away .

Wisdom Calls Aloud

חָ֭כְמוֹת

ḥā·ḵə·mō·wṯ

– בַּח֣וּץ

ba·ḥūṣ

תָּרֹ֑נָּה

tā·rōn·nāh;

– בָּ֝רְחֹב֗וֹת

bā·rə·ḥō·ḇō·wṯ,

in the open squares –

תִּתֵּ֥ן

tit·tên

. קוֹלָֽהּ׃

qō·w·lāh.

בְּרֹ֥אשׁ

bə·rōš

In the chief

､ הֹמִיּ֗וֹת

hō·mî·yō·wṯ,

תִּ֫קְרָ֥א

tiq·rā

בְּפִתְחֵ֖י

bə·p̄iṯ·ḥê

at the openings

– שְׁעָרִ֥ים

šə·‘ā·rîm

of the gates –

בָּעִ֗יר

bā·‘îr,

in the city

､ אֲמָרֶ֥יהָ

’ă·mā·re·hā

. תֹאמֵֽר׃

ṯō·mêr.

עַד־

‘aḏ-

מָתַ֣י ׀

mā·ṯay

､ פְּתָיִם֮

pə·ṯā·yim

you simple ones ､

תְּֽאֵהֲב֫וּ

tə·’ê·hă·ḇū

؟ פֶ֥תִי

p̄e·ṯî

וְלֵצִ֗ים

wə·lê·ṣîm,

､ לָ֭צוֹן

lā·ṣō·wn

חָמְד֣וּ

ḥā·mə·ḏū

לָהֶ֑ם

lā·hem;

וּ֝כְסִילִ֗ים

ū·ḵə·sî·lîm,

יִשְׂנְאוּ־

yiś·nə·’ū-

؟ דָֽעַת׃

ḏā·‘aṯ.

תָּשׁ֗וּבוּ

tā·šū·ḇū,

､ לְֽת֫וֹכַחְתִּ֥י

lə·ṯō·w·ḵaḥ·tî

at my rebuke ､

､ הִנֵּ֤ה

hin·nêh

אַבִּ֣יעָה

’ab·bî·‘āh

I will pour out

לָכֶ֣ם

lā·ḵem

on you

רוּחִ֑י

rū·ḥî;

אוֹדִ֖יעָה

’ō·w·ḏî·‘āh

I will make known

דְבָרַ֣י

ḏə·ḇā·ray

. אֶתְכֶֽם׃

’eṯ·ḵem.

to you .

יַ֣עַן

ya·‘an

､ קָ֭רָאתִי

qā·rā·ṯî

I have called ､

– וַתְּמָאֵ֑נוּ

wat·tə·mā·’ê·nū;

and you refused –

נָטִ֥יתִי

nā·ṭî·ṯî

I have stretched out

､ יָ֝דִ֗י

yā·ḏî,

my hand ､

וְאֵ֣ין

wə·’ên

and no one

– מַקְשִֽׁיב׃

maq·šîḇ.

וַתִּפְרְע֥וּ

wat·tip̄·rə·‘ū

and because you disdained

כָל־

ḵāl

､ עֲצָתִ֑י

‘ă·ṣā·ṯî;

my counsel ､

– וְ֝תוֹכַחְתִּ֗י

wə·ṯō·w·ḵaḥ·tî,

and of my rebuke –

לֹ֣א

lō

. אֲבִיתֶֽם׃

’ă·ḇî·ṯem.

גַּם־

gam-

אֲ֭נִי

’ă·nî

I

– בְּאֵידְכֶ֣ם

bə·’ê·ḏə·ḵem

at your calamity –

אֶשְׂחָ֑ק

’eś·ḥāq;

will laugh

אֶ֝לְעַ֗ג

’el·‘aḡ,

I will mock

– בְּבֹ֣א

bə·ḇō

. פַחְדְּכֶֽם׃

p̄aḥ·də·ḵem.

בְּבֹ֤א

bə·ḇō

[כשאוה]

ḵə·ša·’ă·wāh

-

(כְשׁוֹאָ֨ה ׀)

ḵə·šō·w·’āh

פַּחְדְּכֶ֗ם

paḥ·də·ḵem,

וְֽ֭אֵידְכֶם

wə·’ê·ḏə·ḵem

and your destruction

– כְּסוּפָ֣ה

kə·sū·p̄āh

like a whirlwind –

יֶאֱתֶ֑ה

ye·’ĕ·ṯeh;

בְּבֹ֥א

bə·ḇō

עֲ֝לֵיכֶ֗ם

‘ă·lê·ḵem,

צָרָ֥ה

ṣā·rāh

. וְצוּקָֽה׃

wə·ṣū·qāh.

אָ֣ז

’āz

יִ֭קְרָאֻנְנִי

yiq·rā·’un·nî

they will call on me

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

but not

– אֶֽעֱנֶ֑ה

’e·‘ĕ·neh;

I will answer –

､ יְ֝שַׁחֲרֻ֗נְנִי

yə·ša·ḥă·run·nî,

they will seek me diligently ､

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

but not

. יִמְצָאֻֽנְנִי׃

yim·ṣā·’un·nî.

they will find me .

תַּ֭חַת

ta·ḥaṯ

כִּי־

kî-

שָׂ֣נְאוּ

śā·nə·’ū

､ דָ֑עַת

ḏā·‘aṯ;

וְיִרְאַ֥ת

wə·yir·’aṯ

and the fear

יְ֝הֹוָ֗ה

Yah·weh

לֹ֣א

lō

not

. בָחָֽרוּ׃

ḇā·ḥā·rū.

לֹא־

lō-

אָב֥וּ

’ā·ḇū

they would have

､ לַעֲצָתִ֑י

la·‘ă·ṣā·ṯî;

of my counsel ､

נָ֝אֲצ֗וּ

nā·’ă·ṣū,

כָּל־

kāl-

. תּוֹכַחְתִּֽי׃

tō·w·ḵaḥ·tî.

וְֽ֭יֹאכְלוּ

wə·yō·ḵə·lū

Therefore they shall eat

מִפְּרִ֣י

mip·pə·rî

､ דַרְכָּ֑ם

ḏar·kām;

of their own way ､

וּֽמִמֹּעֲצֹ֖תֵיהֶ֣ם

ū·mim·mō·‘ă·ṣō·ṯê·hem

and with their own fancies

. יִשְׂבָּֽעוּ׃

yiś·bā·‘ū.

be filled to the full .

כִּ֤י

kî

מְשׁוּבַ֣ת

mə·šū·ḇaṯ

the turning away

פְּתָיִ֣ם

pə·ṯā·yim

of the simple

תַּֽהַרְגֵ֑ם

ta·har·ḡêm;

וְשַׁלְוַ֖ת

wə·šal·waṯ

and the complacency

כְּסִילִ֣ים

kə·sî·lîm

. תְּאַבְּדֵֽם׃

tə·’ab·bə·ḏêm.

will destroy them .

וְשֹׁמֵ֣עַֽ

wə·šō·mê·a‘

But whoever listens

לִ֭י

lî

to me

יִשְׁכָּן־

yiš·kān-

will dwell

､ בֶּ֑טַח

be·ṭaḥ;

וְ֝שַׁאֲנַ֗ן

wə·ša·’ă·nan,

and will be secure

מִפַּ֥חַד

mip·pa·ḥaḏ

. רָעָֽה׃

rā·‘āh.

of evil .
