of Israel in Egypt (Ex 2:23,25; 5), which is called the "house of bondage" (Ex 13:3; 20:2). This word is used also with reference to the captivity in Babylon (Isa 14:3), and the oppression of the Persian king (Ezr 9:8-9).

Now it came about in the course of those many days that the king of Egypt died. And the sons of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried out; and their cry for help because of their bondage rose up to God.
God saw the sons of Israel, and God took notice of them.
Moses said to the people, "Remember this day in which you went out from Egypt, from the house of slavery; for by a powerful hand the LORD brought you out from this place And nothing leavened shall be eaten.
"I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
"But now for a brief moment grace has been shown from the LORD our God, to leave us an escaped remnant and to give us a peg in His holy place, that our God may enlighten our eyes and grant us a little reviving in our bondage. "For we are slaves; yet in our bondage our God has not forsaken us, but has extended lovingkindness to us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us reviving to raise up the house of our God, to restore its ruins and to give us a wall in Judah and Jerusalem.
