The radical sense of the Hebrew word seems to be "habitable places," as opposed to water, and in this sense it occurs in
Hence it means secondarily any maritime district, whether belonging to a continent or to an island; thus it is used of the shore of the Mediterranean,
and of the coasts of Elishah,
i.e. of Greece and Asia Minor.
And the inhabitants of this coastland will say on that day: Look, this is what has happened to those we relied on and fled to for help to rescue [us] from the king of Assyria! Now, how will we escape?"
Mourn, inhabitants of the coastland, you merchants of Sidon; your agents have crossed the sea
