And if those days had not been cut short, nobody would have escaped, but for the sake of God's chosen people those days will be cut short.

If the Lord had not cut those days short, nobody would have escaped, but for the sake of the people chosen as His own He has cut them short.

I mean this, brothers. The time has been cut short. For the future, men who have wives should live as though they had none,

So celebrate your triumph, you heavens and you who live in them! Alas for the earth and the sea, because the devil has come down to you in a great rage, since he knows that his time is short!"

So some of His disciples said to one another, "What does He mean by telling us, 'In just a little while you will not see me, and yet in just a little while after you will see me again,' and 'Because I am going away to the Father'?"

Jesus knew that they wanted to ask Him a question, and so He said to them, "Are you inquiring of one another about this saying of mine, 'In just a little while you will not see me, and yet in just a little while after you will see me again'?

In such a hope keep on rejoicing, although for a little while you must be sorrow-stricken with various trials,

And God, the giver of every spiritual blessing, who through your union with Christ has called you to His eternal glory, after you have suffered a little while, will Himself make you perfect, firm, and strong,

For this slight and momentary sorrow continues to accumulate for me a solid and eternal glory far beyond any comparison,

Not many days after that, the younger son got together all he had and went away to a distant country, and there he squandered all his property by living in dissipation.
