'Person' in the Bible
Where is the wise person? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? God has turned the wisdom of the world into nonsense, hasn't he?
Therefore, as it is written, "The person who boasts must boast in the Lord."
For what person knows the thoughts and motives of a man except the man’s spirit within him? So also no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
A person who isn't spiritual doesn't accept the things of God's Spirit, for they are nonsense to him. He can't understand them because they are spiritually evaluated.
The spiritual person, however, can evaluate everything, yet he himself cannot be evaluated by anyone.
For when one person says, "I follow Paul," and another person says, "I follow Apollos," you're following your own human nature, aren't you?
As an expert builder using the grace that God gave me, I laid the foundation, and someone else is building on it. But each person must be careful how he builds on it.
Whether a person builds on this foundation with gold, silver, expensive stones, wood, hay, or straw,
the workmanship of each person will become evident, for the day of judgment will show what it is, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person's action.
If what a person has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward.
Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool [discarding his worldly pretensions and acknowledging his lack of wisdom], so that he may become [truly] wise.
A person should consider us in this way: as servants of Christ and managers of God’s mysteries.
Therefore, stop judging prematurely, before the Lord comes, for he will bring to light what is now hidden in darkness and reveal the motives of our hearts. Then each person will receive his praise from God.
Now, brothers, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the saying: “Nothing beyond what is written.” The purpose is that none of you will be inflated with pride in favor of one person over another.
And you are proud and arrogant! You should have mourned in shame so that the man who has done this [disgraceful] thing would be removed from your fellowship!
[I have decided] to hand over such a person to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, in order that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.
But now I am writing you not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer who is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or verbally abusive, a drunkard or a swindler. Do not even eat with such a person.
But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.
I say this to your shame! Can it be that there is not one wise person among you who is able to arbitrate between his brothers?
You know that the person who unites himself with a prostitute becomes one body with her, don't you? For it is said, "The two will become one flesh."
But the person who unites himself with the Lord becomes one spirit with him.
Run from sexual immorality! “Every sin a person can commit is outside the body.” On the contrary, the person who is sexually immoral sins against his own body.
A married woman is not mistress of her own person: her husband has certain rights. In the same way a married man is not master of his own person: his wife has certain rights.
I would like everyone to be unmarried, like I am. However, each person has a special gift from God, one this and another that.
Nevertheless, as the Lord has assigned to each one, as God has called each person, so must he live. I give this sort of direction in all the churches.
Each person should remain in the life situation in which he was called.
For the slave who has been called to belong to the Lord is the Lord's free person. In the same way, the free person who has been called is the Messiah's slave.
Brothers, each person should remain with God in whatever situation he was called.
I think then that because of the impending distress [that is, the pressure of the current trouble], it is good for a man to remain as he is.
But I want you to be free from care. The unmarried person cares for the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord.
Then the weak person, the brother for whom Christ died, is ruined by your knowledge.
No one should seek his own good, but the good of the other person.
But if anyone says to you, “This meat has been offered in sacrifice to an idol,” do not eat it, out of consideration for the one who told you, and for conscience’s sake—
Now I am not speaking about your own conscience, but the [conscience] of the other [person]. For why [is] my freedom judged by another's conscience?
For at the meal, each one eats his own supper ahead of others. So one person is hungry while another gets drunk!
A person must examine himself and then eat the bread and drink from the cup,
diversities in work, and yet one and the same God--He who in each person brings about the whole result.
A demonstration of the Spirit is given to each person to produce what is beneficial:
For one person is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, and another the message of knowledge according to the same Spirit,
But one and the same Spirit produces all these results and gives what he wants to each person.
Love bears all things [regardless of what comes], believes all things [looking for the best in each one], hopes all things [remaining steadfast during difficult times], endures all things [without weakening].
For the person who speaks in another language is not speaking to men but to God, since no one understands him; however, he speaks mysteries in the Spirit.
But the person who prophesies speaks to people for edification, encouragement, and consolation.
The person who speaks in another language builds himself up, but he who prophesies builds up the church.
I wish all of you spoke in other languages, but even more that you prophesied. The person who prophesies is greater than the person who speaks in languages, unless he interprets so that the church may be built up.
In the same way, lifeless instruments like the flute or harp produce sounds. But if there's no difference in the notes, how can a person tell what tune is being played?
Therefore the person who speaks in another language should pray that he can interpret.
Otherwise, if you praise with the spirit, how will the uninformed person say “Amen” at your giving of thanks, since he does not know what you are saying?
For you may very well be giving thanks, but the other person is not being built up.
But if all are prophesying and some unbeliever or uninformed person comes in, he is convicted by all and is judged by all.
If any person speaks in another language, there should be only two, or at the most three, each in turn, and someone must interpret.
But if there is no interpreter, that person should keep silent in the church and speak to himself and to God.
But if something has been revealed to another person sitting there, the first prophet should be silent.
If anyone thinks he is a prophet or a spiritual person, he must acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord's command.
However, this will happen to each person in the proper order: first the Messiah, then those who belong to the Messiah when he comes.
Foolish person! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies.
So also it is written, "The first man, Adam, became a living person"; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit.
