1 As soon as day broke, all the high priests and elders held a consultation against Jesus, to put Him to death.
2 So they bound Him, led Him away, and turned Him over to Pilate the governor.
3 Then Judas, who had betrayed Him, as he felt condemned, in remorse brought back the thirty pieces to the high priests and elders,
4 and said, "I did wrong in turning an innocent man over to death." But they said, "What is that to us? You must see to that yourself."
6 The high priests picked up the money and said, "It is not legal to put it into the consecrated treasury, for it is blood money."
7 So after consultation they bought with it the Potter's Field as a burying-ground for strangers.
8 Now this piece of ground has ever since been called "The Field of Blood."
9 In that way the words spoken by the prophet Jeremiah were fulfilled: "They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of the one whose price had been fixed by some Israelites,
10 and gave them for the Potter's Field, as the Lord directed me."
11 Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked Him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus answered, "Yes."
12 And while the charges were being made against Him by the high priests and elders, He made no answer.
13 Then Pilate said to Him, "Do you not hear how strong is the evidence they are bringing against you?"
14 But He did not answer him a single word, so that the governor was dumbfounded beyond expression.
15 Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to set any prisoner free whom the people wanted.
16 At that time they had a notorious prisoner named Barabbas.
17 So when they met for this purpose, Pilate asked them, "Which one do you want me to set free, Barabbas, or Jesus, the so-called Christ?"
18 For he knew that they had turned Him over to the court out of envy.
19 Now while he was on the bench, his wife sent him this word, "Do not have anything to do with that righteous man, for I have this morning suffered excruciating pain in a dream caused by Him."
20 But the high priests and the elders lined up the crowds to ask for Barabbas, and to have Jesus put to death.
21 Still the governor answered, "Which of the two do you want me to set free for you?" And they said, "Barabbas."
22 Pilate asked them, "What then shall I do with Jesus. the so-called Christ?" They all answered, "Have Him crucified!"
23 He asked, "Why, what has He done that is wrong?" But they kept on shouting louder and louder, "Have Him crucified!"
24 So Pilate, since he saw that he was making no headway with them, but that a riot was about to break out instead, took some water and washed his hands before the crowd, and said, "I am not responsible for this man's death; you must see to it yourselves."
25 And all the people answered, "His blood be on us and on our children!"
26 Then he set Barabbas free for them, but had Jesus flogged and turned over to be crucified.
27 Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the barracks, and gathered about Him the whole battalion.
28 Then they stripped Him, and put a purple cloak on Him,
29 and made a crown of thorns and set it on His head, and they put a stick in His hand, and kneeling before Him they made sport of Him, saying, "All hail, you king of the Jews!"
30 And they spit on Him, and took the stick and kept hitting Him on the head.
31 And when they had finished making sport of Him, they took off the cloak, and put His own clothes back on Him, and led Him away to be crucified.
32 As they were going out of the city, they found a Cyrenian named Simon, and they forced him to carry Jesus' cross.
33 When they came to a place called Golgotha, which means the Place of the Skull,
34 they gave Him some wine mixed with gall, but when He tasted it, He would not drink it.
35 Then they crucified Him and divided among them His clothes by drawing lots,
36 and sitting down they kept watch of Him there.
37 They put above His head the charge against Him, which read: "THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS."
38 At the same time two robbers were crucified with Him, one at His right and one at His left.
39 And the passers-by kept hissing at Him, shaking their heads
40 and saying, "You who would tear down the temple and build another in three days, save yourself! If you are really the Son of God, come down from the cross."
41 And the high priests, too, made sport of Him, with the scribes and elders, and said,
42 "He saved others but He cannot save Himself. He is the king of Israel, is He? Well, let Him come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him.
43 He has put His trust in God; let God deliver Him now, if He cares for Him, for He said, 'I am the Son of God.'"
44 Even the robbers who were crucified with Him made sport of Him in the same way.
45 Now from twelve o'clock till three, darkness covered the whole land.
46 About three Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" which means, "My God! My God! why have you forsaken me?"
48 So one of them at once ran off and took a sponge and soaked it in vinegar, put it on a stick and held it up to Him to drink.
49 But the others said, "Wait, let us see if Elijah does come to deliver Him."
50 But Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and gave up His spirit.
51 And at once the curtain of the sanctuary was torn from top to bottom, the earth shook, the rocks were split,
52 the tombs were opened, and many bodies of saints then sleeping in death rose
53 and left their tombs, and after His resurrection went into the holy city and appeared to many people.
54 And the army captain and his men, who were keeping guard over Jesus, who felt the earthquake and saw all that was taking place, were terribly frightened, and said, "Surely this was God's Son."
55 Now several women were there looking on from a distance, who accompanied Jesus from Galilee to care for Him,
56 among them Mary of Magdala, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee's sons.
57 Although it was now evening, a rich man named Joseph, from Arimathea, who was himself a disciple of Jesus,
58 came to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him.
59 So Joseph took the body and wrapped it in clean linen,
60 and laid it in a tomb of his, which he had cut out of the rock, and he rolled a big boulder over the doorway of the tomb, and went away.
61 And Mary of Magdala and the other Mary kept sitting there in front of the tomb.
62 On the next day, which is the day after the Preparation Day, the high priests and Pharisees met and went in a body to Pilate,
63 and said, "Sir, we remember that that pretender said while He was living, 'After three days I will rise again.'
64 Issue an order then to have the tomb closely guarded, so that His disciples cannot come and steal Him and tell the people that He rose from the dead, and the last deception be worse than the first."
