הַמִּדְבָּ֙רָה֙

into the wilderness

of the Sea ､

ס֔וּף

to me

וַנָּ֥סָב

and we skirted

And

､ הָעָם֮

the people ､

צַ֣ו

ṣaw

､ לֵאמֹר֒

lê·mōr

אַתֶּ֣ם

’at·tem

עֹֽבְרִ֗ים

‘ō·ḇə·rîm,

[are about to] pass through

בִּגְבוּל֙

biḡ·ḇūl

אֲחֵיכֶ֣ם

’ă·ḥê·ḵem

of your brothers

בְּנֵי־

bə·nê-

the descendants

､ עֵשָׂ֔ו

‘ê·śāw,

of Esau ､

הַיֹּשְׁבִ֖ים

hay·yō·šə·ḇîm

– בְּשֵׂעִ֑יר

bə·śê·‘îr;

in Seir –

וְיִֽירְא֣וּ

wə·yî·rə·’ū

and they will be afraid

מִכֶּ֔ם

mik·kem,

of you

וְנִשְׁמַרְתֶּ֖ם

wə·niš·mar·tem

therefore watch yourselves

– מְאֹֽד׃

mə·’ōḏ.

אַל־

’al-

not

תִּתְגָּר֣וּ

tiṯ·gā·rū

בָ֔ם

ḇām,

with them

כִּ֠י

kî

לֹֽא־

lō-

not

אֶתֵּ֤ן

’et·tên

I will give [any]

לָכֶם֙

lā·ḵem

､ מֵֽאַרְצָ֔ם

mê·’ar·ṣām,

of their land ､

עַ֖ד

‘aḏ

no not so much as

– מִדְרַ֣ךְ

miḏ·raḵ

a footprint –

כַּף־

כִּֽי־

. יְרֻשָּׁ֣ה

[as] a possession .

לְעֵשָׂ֔ו

נָתַ֖תִּי

אֹ֣כֶל

תִּשְׁבְּר֧וּ

מֵֽאִתָּ֛ם

with money ､

– וַאֲכַלְתֶּ֑ם

wa·’ă·ḵal·tem;

that you may eat –

וְגַם־

wə·ḡam-

and also

מַ֜יִם

ma·yim

תִּכְר֧וּ

tiḵ·rū

מֵאִתָּ֛ם

mê·’it·tām

､ בַּכֶּ֖סֶף

bak·ke·sep̄

with money ､

. וּשְׁתִיתֶֽם׃

that you may drink .

אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ

has blessed you

בְּכֹל֙

מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה

the work

– יָדֶ֔ךָ

yā·ḏe·ḵā,

of your hand –

יָדַ֣ע

לֶכְתְּךָ֔

leḵ·tə·ḵā,

your trudging through

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

. הַמִּדְבָּ֥ר

ham·miḏ·bār

הַגָּדֹ֖ל

hag·gā·ḏōl

הַזֶּ֑ה

haz·zeh;

זֶ֣ה ׀

zeh

this [is]

אַרְבָּעִ֣ים

’ar·bā·‘îm

שָׁנָ֗ה

šā·nāh,

יְהוָ֤ה

Yah·weh

אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙

’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā

your God [has been]

עִמָּ֔ךְ

‘im·māḵ,

with you

לֹ֥א

not

חָסַ֖רְתָּ

ḥā·sar·tā

you have lacked

. דָּבָֽר׃

וַֽנַּעֲבֹ֞ר

wan·na·‘ă·ḇōr

And when we passed

מֵאֵ֧ת

אַחֵ֣ינוּ

בְנֵי־

ḇə·nê-

the descendants

､ עֵשָׂ֗ו

‘ê·śāw,

of Esau ､

הַיֹּֽשְׁבִים֙

hay·yō·šə·ḇîm

､ בְּשֵׂעִ֔יר

bə·śê·‘îr,

in Seir ､

מִדֶּ֙רֶךְ֙

mid·de·reḵ

away from the road of

הָֽעֲרָבָ֔ה

hā·‘ă·rā·ḇāh,

מֵאֵילַ֖ת

mê·’ê·laṯ

away from Elath

וּמֵעֶצְיֹ֣ן

ū·mê·‘eṣ·yōn

and

גָּ֑בֶר

gā·ḇer;

and we turned

וַֽנַּעֲבֹ֔ר

wan·na·‘ă·ḇōr,

דֶּ֖רֶךְ

by way

of the Wilderness

. מוֹאָֽב׃

mō·w·’āḇ.

of Moab .

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר

And said

יְהוָ֜ה

אֵלַ֗י

to me

תָּ֙צַר֙‪‬

אֶת־

’eṯ-

､ מוֹאָ֔ב

Moab ､

וְאַל־

תִּתְגָּ֥ר

with them

､ מִלְחָמָ֑ה

mil·ḥā·māh;

in battle ､

כִּ֠י

kî

לֹֽא־

lō-

not

אֶתֵּ֨ן

I will give [any]

עַ֣ם

‘am

､ גָּד֥וֹל

as great ､

､ וְרַ֛ב

wə·raḇ

and numerous ､

､ וָרָ֖ם

wā·rām

and tall ､

– כָּעֲנָקִֽים׃

kā·‘ă·nā·qîm.

as the Anakim –

､ רְפָאִ֛ים

rə·p̄ā·’îm

the Rephaim ､

יֵחָשְׁב֥וּ

yê·ḥā·šə·ḇū

were regarded as

אַף־

’ap̄-

הֵ֖ם

hêm

– כָּעֲנָקִ֑ים

kā·‘ă·nā·qîm;

like the Anakim –

וְהַמֹּ֣אָבִ֔ים

wə·ham·mō·’ā·ḇîm,

but the Moabites

יִקְרְא֥וּ

yiq·rə·’ū

לָהֶ֖ם

lā·hem

. אֵמִֽים׃

’ê·mîm.

וּבְשֵׂעִ֞יר

ū·ḇə·śê·‘îr

And in Seir

יָשְׁב֣וּ

yā·šə·ḇū

הַחֹרִים֮

ha·ḥō·rîm

– לְפָנִים֒

lə·p̄ā·nîm

וּבְנֵ֧י

ū·ḇə·nê

but the descendants

עֵשָׂ֣ו

‘ê·śāw

יִֽירָשׁ֗וּם

yî·rā·šūm,

dispossessed them

וַיַּשְׁמִידוּם֙

way·yaš·mî·ḏūm

and destroyed them

מִפְּנֵיהֶ֔ם

mip·pə·nê·hem,

from before them

וַיֵּשְׁב֖וּ

way·yê·šə·ḇū

– תַּחְתָּ֑ם

taḥ·tām;

in their place –

כַּאֲשֶׁ֧ר

ka·’ă·šer

עָשָׂ֣ה

‘ā·śāh

יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל

yiś·rā·’êl,

לְאֶ֙רֶץ֙

lə·’e·reṣ

to the land

､ יְרֻשָּׁת֔וֹ

yə·ruš·šā·ṯōw,

of their possession ､

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

נָתַ֥ן

nā·ṯan

יְהוָ֖ה

. לָהֶֽם׃

עַתָּ֗ה

‘at·tāh,

､ קֻ֛מוּ

וְהַיָּמִ֞ים

And the time [was]

אֲשֶׁר־

הָלַ֣כְנוּ ׀

we took to come

מִקָּדֵ֣שׁ

miq·qā·ḏêš

בַּרְנֵ֗עַ

bar·nê·a‘,

עַ֤ד

‘aḏ

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

עָבַ֙רְנוּ֙

‘ā·ḇar·nū

אֶת־

’eṯ-

נַ֣חַל

na·ḥal

of the Zered

､ זֶ֔רֶד

ze·reḏ,

שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים

šə·lō·šîm

וּשְׁמֹנֶ֖ה

ū·šə·mō·neh

– שָׁנָ֑ה

šā·nāh;

עַד־

‘aḏ-

תֹּ֨ם

the hand

to destroy them

of the camp ､

they were consumed .

So it was ､

הַמִּלְחָמָ֛ה

of the Rephaim ､

תֵּחָשֵׁ֖ב

עַ֣ם

‘am

､ גָּד֥וֹל

as great ､

､ וְרַ֛ב

wə·raḇ

and tall ､

– כָּעֲנָקִ֑ים

And the Avites

הַיֹּשְׁבִ֥ים

､ בַּחֲצֵרִ֖ים

ba·ḥă·ṣê·rîm

in villages ､

עַד־

‘aḏ-

as far as

､ עַזָּ֑ה

‘az·zāh;

Gaza ､

､ כַּפְתֹּרִים֙

kap̄·tō·rîm

the Caphtorites ､

הַיֹּצְאִ֣ים

hay·yō·ṣə·’îm

מִכַּפְתּ֔וֹר

mik·kap̄·tō·wr,

הִשְׁמִידֻ֖ם

hiš·mî·ḏum

וַיֵּשְׁב֥וּ

way·yê·šə·ḇū

. תַחְתָּֽם׃

I will begin

וְיִרְאָ֣תְךָ֔

wə·yir·’ā·ṯə·ḵā,

and fear

עַל־

‘al-

of you

פְּנֵי֙

pə·nê

הָֽעַמִּ֔ים

hā·‘am·mîm,

תַּ֖חַת

ta·ḥaṯ

כָּל־

kāl-

､ הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם

haš·šā·mā·yim;

the heaven ､

אֲשֶׁ֤ר

’ă·šer

יִשְׁמְעוּן֙

yiš·mə·‘ūn

שִׁמְעֲךָ֔

šim·‘ă·ḵā,

the report of you

､ וְרָגְז֥וּ

wə·rā·ḡə·zū

and shall tremble ､

וְחָל֖וּ

wə·ḥā·lū

and be in anguish

. מִפָּנֶֽיךָ׃

mip·pā·ne·ḵā

because of you .

וָאֶשְׁלַ֤ח

wā·’eš·laḥ

And I sent

מַלְאָכִים֙

mal·’ā·ḵîm

מִמִּדְבַּ֣ר

mim·miḏ·bar

from the Wilderness

קְדֵמ֔וֹת

qə·ḏê·mō·wṯ,

אֶל־

’el-

to

סִיח֖וֹן

sî·ḥō·wn

מֶ֣לֶךְ

me·leḵ

חֶשְׁבּ֑וֹן

ḥeš·bō·wn;

דִּבְרֵ֥י

diḇ·rê

with words

､ שָׁל֖וֹם

šā·lō·wm

of peace ､

､ לֵאמֹֽר׃

lê·mōr.

אֶעְבְּרָ֣ה

’e‘·bə·rāh

let me pass through

､ בְאַרְצֶ֔ךָ

ḇə·’ar·ṣe·ḵā,

בַּדֶּ֥רֶךְ

the way

､ בַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ

to the road ､

אֵלֵ֑ךְ

I will keep strictly

I will turn

to the right

. וּשְׂמֹֽאול׃

nor to the left .

תַּשְׁבִּרֵ֙נִי֙

You shall sell me

– וְאָכַ֔לְתִּי

wə·’ā·ḵal·tî,

that I may eat –

בּ֑וֹ

bōw;

כִּֽי־

הִקְשָׁה֩

hiq·šāh

יְהוָ֨ה

Yah·weh

אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ

’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ רוּח֗וֹ

rū·ḥōw,

וְאִמֵּץ֙

wə·’im·mêṣ

and made obstinate

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

לְבָב֔וֹ

lə·ḇā·ḇōw,

לְמַ֛עַן

lə·ma·‘an

תִּתּ֥וֹ

tit·tōw

He might deliver him

､ בְיָדְךָ֖

ḇə·yā·ḏə·ḵā

into your hand ､

כַּיּ֥וֹם

kay·yō·wm

as [it is] day

. הַזֶּֽה׃

haz·zeh.

And said

יְהוָה֙

אֵלַ֔י

’ê·lay,

to me

､ רְאֵ֗ה

See ､

הַֽחִלֹּ֙תִי֙

ha·ḥil·lō·ṯî

תֵּ֣ת

לְפָנֶ֔יךָ

lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā,

to you

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

סִיחֹ֖ן

sî·ḥōn

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

אַרְצ֑וֹ

’ar·ṣōw;

הָחֵ֣ל

hā·ḥêl

､ רָ֔שׁ

rāš,

to possess [it] ､

לָרֶ֖שֶׁת

lā·re·šeṯ

that you may inherit

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

. אַרְצֽוֹ׃

’ar·ṣōw.

וַיֵּצֵא֩

way·yê·ṣê

סִיחֹ֨ן

sî·ḥōn

לִקְרָאתֵ֜נוּ

liq·rā·ṯê·nū

ה֧וּא

hū

he

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

and all

､ עַמּ֛וֹ

‘am·mōw

לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה

lam·mil·ḥā·māh

. יָֽהְצָה׃

yā·hə·ṣāh.

at Jahaz .

וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֛הוּ

way·yit·tə·nê·hū

And delivered him

יְהוָ֥ה

Yah·weh

אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ

’ĕ·lō·hê·nū

לְפָנֵ֑ינוּ

lə·p̄ā·nê·nū;

over to us

וַנַּ֥ךְ

wan·naḵ

אֹת֛וֹ

’ō·ṯōw

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

[בנו]

bə·nōw

-

､ (בָּנָ֖יו)

bā·nāw

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

כָּל־

kāl-

. עַמּֽוֹ׃

‘am·mōw.

וַנִּלְכֹּ֤ד

wan·nil·kōḏ

And we took

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

כָּל־

kāl-

עָרָיו֙

‘ā·rāw

､ בָּעֵ֣ת

bā·‘êṯ

at time ､

הַהִ֔וא

ha·hi·w,

וַֽנַּחֲרֵם֙

wan·na·ḥă·rêm

and we utterly destroyed

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

כָּל־

kāl-

､ עִ֣יר

‘îr

city ､

､ מְתִ֔ם

mə·ṯim,

the men ､

､ וְהַנָּשִׁ֖ים

wə·han·nā·šîm

and women ､

､ וְהַטָּ֑ף

wə·haṭ·ṭāp̄;

and little ones ､

לֹ֥א

lō

הִשְׁאַ֖רְנוּ

hiš·’ar·nū

. שָׂרִֽיד׃

śā·rîḏ.

בָּזַ֣זְנוּ

we took as plunder

לָ֑נוּ

וּשְׁלַ֥ל

and with the spoil

הֶעָרִ֖ים

he·‘ā·rîm

of the cities

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

. לָכָֽדְנוּ׃

lā·ḵā·ḏə·nū.

we took .

､ מֵֽעֲרֹעֵ֡ר

mê·‘ă·rō·‘êr

אֲשֶׁר֩

’ă·šer

which [is]

עַל־

‘al-

on

שְׂפַת־

śə·p̄aṯ-

the bank

נַ֨חַל

na·ḥal

of the River

､ אַרְנֹ֜ן

’ar·nōn

וְהָעִ֨יר

wə·hā·‘îr

and [from] the city

אֲשֶׁ֤ר

’ă·šer

that [is]

､ בַּנַּ֙חַל֙

ban·na·ḥal

in the ravine ､

וְעַד־

wə·‘aḏ-

and as far as

､ הַגִּלְעָ֔ד

hag·gil·‘āḏ,

לֹ֤א

lō

not

הָֽיְתָה֙

hā·yə·ṯāh

קִרְיָ֔ה

qir·yāh,

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

שָׂגְבָ֖ה

śā·ḡə·ḇāh

מִמֶּ֑נּוּ

mim·men·nū;

for us

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הַכֹּ֕ל

hak·kōl

נָתַ֛ן

nā·ṯan

יְהוָ֥ה
