כִּי־

יִמָּצֵ֣א

חָלָ֗ל

ḥā·lāl,

בָּאֲדָמָה֙

bā·’ă·ḏā·māh

in the land

אֲשֶׁר֩

’ă·šer

יְהוָ֨ה

Yah·weh

אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ

’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā

נֹתֵ֤ן

nō·ṯên

לְךָ֙

lə·ḵā

לְרִשְׁתָּ֔הּ

lə·riš·tāh,

נֹפֵ֖ל

nō·p̄êl

､ בַּשָּׂדֶ֑ה

baś·śā·ḏeh;

in the field ､

לֹ֥א

lō

not

נוֹדַ֖ע

nō·w·ḏa‘

[and] it is known

מִ֥י

mî

. הִכָּֽהוּ׃

hik·kā·hū.

､ וְיָצְא֥וּ

wə·yā·ṣə·’ū

Then shall go out ､

זְקֵנֶ֖יךָ

zə·qê·ne·ḵā

וְשֹׁפְטֶ֑יךָ

wə·šō·p̄ə·ṭe·ḵā;

and your judges

וּמָדְדוּ֙

ū·mā·ḏə·ḏū

and measure [the distance]

אֶל־

’el-

to

הֶ֣עָרִ֔ים

he·‘ā·rîm,

אֲשֶׁ֖ר

’ă·šer

סְבִיבֹ֥ת

sə·ḇî·ḇōṯ

– הֶחָלָֽל׃

he·ḥā·lāl.

from the slain man –

､ וְהָיָ֣ה

wə·hā·yāh

and it shall be [that] ､

הָעִ֔יר

hā·‘îr,

the city

הַקְּרֹבָ֖ה

haq·qə·rō·ḇāh

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ הֶחָלָ֑ל

he·ḥā·lāl;

the slain man ､

וְלָֽקְח֡וּ

wə·lā·qə·ḥū

and will take

זִקְנֵי֩

ziq·nê

הָעִ֨יר

hā·‘îr

הַהִ֜וא

ha·hi·w

עֶגְלַ֣ת

‘eḡ·laṯ

､ בָּקָ֗ר

bā·qār,

of the herd ､

אֲשֶׁ֤ר

’ă·šer

לֹֽא־

lō-

not

עֻבַּד֙

‘ub·baḏ

has been worked

בָּ֔הּ

bāh,

in

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

[and] which

לֹא־

lō-

not

מָשְׁכָ֖ה

mā·šə·ḵāh

– בְּעֹֽל׃

bə·‘ōl.

with a yoke –

וְהוֹרִ֡דוּ

wə·hō·w·ri·ḏū

and shall bring down

זִקְנֵי֩

ziq·nê

הָעִ֨יר

hā·‘îr

הַהִ֤וא

ha·hi·w

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הָֽעֶגְלָה֙

hā·‘eḡ·lāh

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ נַ֣חַל

na·ḥal

an valley ､

אֵיתָ֔ן

’ê·ṯān,

אֲשֶׁ֛ר

’ă·šer

לֹא־

lō-

יֵעָבֵ֥ד

yê·‘ā·ḇêḏ

בּ֖וֹ

bōw

in

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

､ יִזָּרֵ֑עַ

yiz·zā·rê·a‘;

sown ､

וְעָֽרְפוּ־

wə·‘ā·rə·p̄ū-

and they shall break neck

שָׁ֥ם

šām

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הָעֶגְלָ֖ה

hā·‘eḡ·lāh

of the heifer

. בַּנָּֽחַל׃

ban·nā·ḥal.

in the valley .

– וְנִגְּשׁ֣וּ

wə·nig·gə·šū

And shall come near –

הַכֹּהֲנִים֮

hak·kō·hă·nîm

בְּנֵ֣י

bə·nê

the sons of

לֵוִי֒

lê·wî

כִּ֣י

kî

בָ֗ם

ḇām,

בָּחַ֞ר

bā·ḥar

יְהוָ֤ה

Yah·weh

אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙

’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā

לְשָׁ֣רְת֔וֹ

lə·šā·rə·ṯōw,

to minister to Him

וּלְבָרֵ֖ךְ

ū·lə·ḇā·rêḵ

and to bless

בְּשֵׁ֣ם

bə·šêm

in the name

– יְהוָ֑ה

Yah·weh;

of Yahweh –

וְעַל־

wə·‘al-

and by

פִּיהֶ֥ם

pî·hem

יִהְיֶ֖ה

yih·yeh

shall be [settled]

כָּל־

kāl-

רִ֥יב

rîḇ

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

. נָֽגַע׃

nā·ḡa‘.

וְכֹ֗ל

wə·ḵōl,

And all

זִקְנֵי֙

ziq·nê

､ הָעִ֣יר

hā·‘îr

of city ､

הַהִ֔וא

ha·hi·w,

הַקְּרֹבִ֖ים

haq·qə·rō·ḇîm

אֶל־

’el-

to

הֶחָלָ֑ל

he·ḥā·lāl;

the slain [man]

יִרְחֲצוּ֙

yir·ḥă·ṣū

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

יְדֵיהֶ֔ם

yə·ḏê·hem,

עַל־

‘al-

הָעֶגְלָ֖ה

hā·‘eḡ·lāh

הָעֲרוּפָ֥ה

hā·‘ă·rū·p̄āh

whose neck was broken

– בַנָּֽחַל׃

ḇan·nā·ḥal.

in the valley –

וְעָנ֖וּ

wə·‘ā·nū

and they shall answer

､ וְאָמְר֑וּ

wə·’ā·mə·rū;

and say ､

יָדֵ֗ינוּ

yā·ḏê·nū,

לֹ֤א

lō

not

[שפכה]

šā·p̄ə·ḵāh

-

(שָֽׁפְכוּ֙)

šā·p̄ə·ḵū

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הַדָּ֣ם

had·dām

הַזֶּ֔ה

haz·zeh,

וְעֵינֵ֖ינוּ

wə·‘ê·nê·nū

לֹ֥א

lō

. רָאֽוּ׃

rā·’ū.

have seen [it] .

､ כַּפֵּר֩

kap·pêr

Provide atonement ､

לְעַמְּךָ֨

lə·‘am·mə·ḵā

for Your people

､ יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל

yiś·rā·’êl

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

､ פָּדִ֙יתָ֙

pā·ḏî·ṯā

You have redeemed ､

､ יְהוָ֔ה

Yah·weh,

וְאַל־

wə·’al-

and not

תִּתֵּן֙

tit·tên

do lay

דָּ֣ם

dām

נָקִ֔י

nā·qî,

. בְּקֶ֖רֶב

bə·qe·reḇ

to the charge .

עַמְּךָ֣

‘am·mə·ḵā

יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל

yiś·rā·’êl;

וְנִכַּפֵּ֥ר

wə·nik·kap·pêr

and atonement shall be provided

לָהֶ֖ם

lā·hem

on their behalf for

. הַדָּֽם׃

had·dām.

the blood .

וְאַתָּ֗ה

wə·’at·tāh,

So you

תְּבַעֵ֛ר

tə·ḇa·‘êr

הַדָּ֥ם

had·dām

the [guilt of] blood

הַנָּקִ֖י

han·nā·qî

מִקִּרְבֶּ֑ךָ

miq·qir·be·ḵā;

כִּֽי־

kî-

תַעֲשֶׂ֥ה

ṯa·‘ă·śeh

you do [what is]

הַיָּשָׁ֖ר

hay·yā·šār

בְּעֵינֵ֥י

bə·‘ê·nê

in the sight

. יְהוָֽה׃

Yah·weh.

Marrying a Captive Woman

כִּֽי־

תֵצֵ֥א

לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה

lam·mil·ḥā·māh

to war

עַל־

‘al-

､ אֹיְבֶ֑יךָ

’ō·yə·ḇe·ḵā;

your enemies ､

וּנְתָנ֞וֹ

ū·nə·ṯā·nōw

and delivers them

יְהוָ֧ה

Yah·weh

אֱלֹהֶ֛יךָ

’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā

､ בְּיָדֶ֖ךָ

bə·yā·ḏe·ḵā

into your hand ､

וְשָׁבִ֥יתָ

wə·šā·ḇî·ṯā

. שִׁבְיֽוֹ׃

šiḇ·yōw.

וְרָאִיתָ֙

wə·rā·’î·ṯā

בַּשִּׁבְיָ֔ה

baš·šiḇ·yāh,

among the captives

､ אֵ֖שֶׁת

’ê·šeṯ

a woman ､

יְפַת־

yə·p̄aṯ-

תֹּ֑אַר

tō·’ar;

וְחָשַׁקְתָּ֣

wə·ḥā·šaq·tā

בָ֔הּ

ḇāh,

וְלָקַחְתָּ֥

wə·lā·qaḥ·tā

לְךָ֖

lə·ḵā

– לְאִשָּֽׁה׃

lə·’iš·šāh.

for your wife –

וַהֲבֵאתָ֖הּ

wa·hă·ḇê·ṯāh

then you shall bring her

אֶל־

’el-

to

תּ֣וֹךְ

tō·wḵ

– בֵּיתֶ֑ךָ

bê·ṯe·ḵā;

וְגִלְּחָה֙

wə·ḡil·lə·ḥāh

and she shall shave

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ רֹאשָׁ֔הּ

rō·šāh,

וְעָשְׂתָ֖ה

wə·‘ā·śə·ṯāh

and trim

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

– צִפָּרְנֶֽיהָ׃

ṣip·pā·rə·ne·hā.

וְהֵסִ֩ירָה֩

wə·hê·sî·rāh

and she shall put off

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

שִׂמְלַ֨ת

śim·laṯ

the clothes of

שִׁבְיָ֜הּ

šiḇ·yāh

מֵעָלֶ֗יהָ

mê·‘ā·le·hā,

וְיָֽשְׁבָה֙

wə·yā·šə·ḇāh

､ בְּבֵיתֶ֔ךָ

bə·ḇê·ṯe·ḵā,

in your house ､

וּבָֽכְתָ֛ה

ū·ḇā·ḵə·ṯāh

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

אָבִ֥יהָ

’ā·ḇî·hā

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

אִמָּ֖הּ

’im·māh

– יֶ֣רַח

ye·raḥ

a month –

יָמִ֑ים

yā·mîm;

וְאַ֨חַר

wə·’a·ḥar

כֵּ֜ן

kên

תָּב֤וֹא

tā·ḇō·w

you may go in

אֵלֶ֙יהָ֙

’ê·le·hā

to her

､ וּבְעַלְתָּ֔הּ

ū·ḇə·‘al·tāh,

and be her husband ､

וְהָיְתָ֥ה

wə·hā·yə·ṯāh

and she shall be

לְךָ֖

lə·ḵā

. לְאִשָּֽׁה׃

lə·’iš·šāh.

､ וְהָיָ֞ה

wə·hā·yāh

And it shall be ､

אִם־

’im-

if

לֹ֧א

lō

no

חָפַ֣צְתָּ

ḥā·p̄aṣ·tā

you have delight

בָּ֗הּ

bāh,

in her

וְשִׁלַּחְתָּהּ֙

wə·šil·laḥ·tāh

then you shall set her free

– לְנַפְשָׁ֔הּ

lə·nap̄·šāh,

there she will –

וּמָכֹ֥ר

ū·mā·ḵōr

לֹא־

lō-

not

תִמְכְּרֶ֖נָּה

ṯim·kə·ren·nāh

you shall sell her

､ בַּכָּ֑סֶף

bak·kā·sep̄;

לֹא־

lō-

not

תִתְעַמֵּ֣ר

ṯiṯ·‘am·mêr

you shall treat brutally

בָּ֔הּ

bāh,

תַּ֖חַת

ta·ḥaṯ

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

. עִנִּיתָֽהּ׃

‘in·nî·ṯāh.

you have humbled her .

Inheritance Rights of the Firstborn

תִהְיֶ֨יןָ

לְאִ֜ישׁ

､ נָשִׁ֗ים

nā·šîm,

הָאַחַ֤ת

hā·’a·ḥaṯ

､ אֲהוּבָה֙

’ă·hū·ḇāh

וְהָאַחַ֣ת

wə·hā·’a·ḥaṯ

and one

､ שְׂנוּאָ֔ה

śə·nū·’āh,

וְיָֽלְדוּ־

wə·yā·lə·ḏū-

and they have borne

ל֣וֹ

lōw

､ בָנִ֔ים

ḇā·nîm,

הָאֲהוּבָ֖ה

hā·’ă·hū·ḇāh

[both] the loved

– וְהַשְּׂנוּאָ֑ה

wə·haś·śə·nū·’āh;

and the unloved –

וְהָיָ֛ה

wə·hā·yāh

and [if] is

הַבֵּ֥ן

hab·bên

הַבְּכ֖וֹר

hab·bə·ḵō·wr

､ לַשְּׂנִיאָֽה׃

laś·śə·nî·’āh.

of her who is unloved ､

､ וְהָיָ֗ה

wə·hā·yāh,

then it shall be ､

בְּיוֹם֙

bə·yō·wm

on the day

הַנְחִיל֣וֹ

han·ḥî·lōw

he bequeaths his possessions

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

בָּנָ֔יו

bā·nāw,

אֵ֥ת

’êṯ

-

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

､ יִהְיֶ֖ה

yih·yeh

has ､

ל֑וֹ

lōw;

he

לֹ֣א

יוּכַ֗ל

yū·ḵal,

. לְבַכֵּר֙

firstborn status on .

The son

he shall acknowledge [as]

שְׁנַ֔יִם

בְּכֹ֥ל

of all

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

､ יִמָּצֵ֖א

כִּי־

הוּא֙

he [is]

רֵאשִׁ֣ית

of his strength –

of the firstborn .

A Rebellious Son

וּמוֹרֶ֔ה

אֵינֶ֣נּוּ

שֹׁמֵ֔עַ

בְּק֥וֹל

bə·qō·wl

､ אָבִ֖יו

’ā·ḇîw

of his father ､

וּבְק֣וֹל

or the voice

､ אִמּ֑וֹ

’im·mōw;

of his mother ､

וְיסְּר֣וּ‪‬‪‬‪‬

wə·yis·sə·rū

and when [who] they have chastened

אֹת֔וֹ

’ō·ṯōw,

וְלֹ֥א

wə·lō

and not

יִשְׁמַ֖ע

yiš·ma‘

will heed

. אֲלֵיהֶֽם׃

’ă·lê·hem.

וְתָ֥פְשׂוּ

wə·ṯā·p̄ə·śū

Then shall take hold

ב֖וֹ

ḇōw

of him

אָבִ֣יו

’ā·ḇîw

וְאִמּ֑וֹ

wə·’im·mōw;

וְהוֹצִ֧יאוּ

wə·hō·w·ṣî·’ū

אֹת֛וֹ

’ō·ṯōw

אֶל־

’el-

to

זִקְנֵ֥י

ziq·nê

､ עִיר֖וֹ

‘î·rōw

of his city ､

וְאֶל־

wə·’el-

and to

שַׁ֥עַר

ša·‘ar

the gate

– מְקֹמֽוֹ׃

mə·qō·mōw.

of his city –

וְאָמְר֞וּ

wə·’ā·mə·rū

and they shall say

אֶל־

’el-

to

זִקְנֵ֣י

ziq·nê

､ עִיר֗וֹ

‘î·rōw,

of his city ､

בְּנֵ֤נוּ

bə·nê·nū

son of ours is

זֶה֙

zeh

סוֹרֵ֣ר

sō·w·rêr

､ וּמֹרֶ֔ה

ū·mō·reh,

and rebellious ､

אֵינֶ֥נּוּ

’ê·nen·nū

he will not

שֹׁמֵ֖עַ

šō·mê·a‘

– בְּקֹלֵ֑נוּ

bə·qō·lê·nū;

､ זוֹלֵ֖ל

zō·w·lêl

he is a glutton ､

. וְסֹבֵֽא׃

wə·sō·ḇê.

and a drunkard .

וּ֠רְגָמֻהוּ

ū·rə·ḡā·mu·hū

And shall stone him to death

כָּל־

kāl-

אַנְשֵׁ֨י

’an·šê

the men

עִיר֤וֹ

‘î·rōw

､ בָֽאֲבָנִים֙

ḇā·’ă·ḇā·nîm

with stones ､

– וָמֵ֔ת

wā·mêṯ,

and –

וּבִֽעַרְתָּ֥

ū·ḇi·‘ar·tā

so you shall put away

הָרָ֖ע

hā·rā‘

the evil

מִקִּרְבֶּ֑ךָ

miq·qir·be·ḵā;

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

and all

יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל

yiś·rā·’êl

､ יִשְׁמְע֥וּ

yiš·mə·‘ū

. וְיִרָֽאוּ׃

wə·yi·rā·’ū.

and fear .

Cursed is Anyone Hung on a Tree

וְכִֽי־

wə·ḵî-

And if

יִהְיֶ֣ה

yih·yeh

בְאִ֗ישׁ

ḇə·’îš,

חֵ֛טְא

ḥêṭ

מִשְׁפַּט־

miš·paṭ-

､ מָ֖וֶת

mā·weṯ

of death ､

､ וְהוּמָ֑ת

wə·hū·māṯ;

and he is put to death ､

וְתָלִ֥יתָ

wə·ṯā·lî·ṯā

אֹת֖וֹ

’ō·ṯōw

עַל־

‘al-

on

､ עֵֽץ׃

‘êṣ.

a tree ､

לֹא־

lō-

not

תָלִ֨ין

ṯā·lîn

shall remain overnight

נִבְלָת֜וֹ

niḇ·lā·ṯōw

עַל־

‘al-

on

､ הָעֵ֗ץ

hā·‘êṣ,

the tree ､

כִּֽי־

kî-

but

קָב֤וֹר

qā·ḇō·wr

תִּקְבְּרֶ֙נּוּ֙

tiq·bə·ren·nū

you shall bury him

– בַּיּ֣וֹם

bay·yō·wm

day –

הַה֔וּא

ha·hū,

כִּֽי־

kî-

קִלְלַ֥ת

qil·laṯ

אֱלֹהִ֖ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm

of God

תָּל֑וּי

tā·lui;

he who is hanged

וְלֹ֤א

wə·lō

so that not

､ תְטַמֵּא֙

ṯə·ṭam·mê

you do defile ､

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

אַדְמָ֣תְךָ֔

’aḏ·mā·ṯə·ḵā,

the land

אֲשֶׁר֙

’ă·šer

יְהוָ֣ה

Yah·weh

אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ

’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā,

נֹתֵ֥ן

nō·ṯên

לְךָ֖

lə·ḵā

. נַחֲלָֽה׃

na·ḥă·lāh.

[as] an inheritance .
