Cast Your Bread upon the Waters

שַׁלַּ֥ח

šal·laḥ

לַחְמְךָ֖

laḥ·mə·ḵā

עַל־

‘al-

on

פְּנֵ֣י

pə·nê

､ הַמָּ֑יִם

ham·mā·yim;

the waters ､

כִּֽי־

kî-

בְרֹ֥ב

ḇə·rōḇ

הַיָּמִ֖ים

hay·yā·mîm

. תִּמְצָאֶֽנּוּ׃

tim·ṣā·’en·nū.

you will find it .

תֶּן־

ten-

חֵ֥לֶק

ḥê·leq

､ לְשִׁבְעָ֖ה

lə·šiḇ·‘āh

to seven ､

וְגַ֣ם

wə·ḡam

and also

– לִשְׁמוֹנָ֑ה

liš·mō·w·nāh;

to eight –

כִּ֚י

kî

לֹ֣א

lō

not

תֵדַ֔ע

ṯê·ḏa‘,

מַה־

mah-

יִּהְיֶ֥ה

yih·yeh

will be

רָעָ֖ה

rā·‘āh

עַל־

‘al-

on

. הָאָֽרֶץ׃

hā·’ā·reṣ.

the earth .

אִם־

’im-

If

יִמָּלְא֨וּ

yim·mā·lə·’ū

הֶעָבִ֥ים

he·‘ā·ḇîm

of the clouds

､ גֶּ֙שֶׁם֙

ge·šem

rain ､

עַל־

‘al-

– הָאָ֣רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ

the earth –

יָרִ֔יקוּ

yā·rî·qū,

they empty [themselves]

וְאִם־

wə·’im-

and if

יִפּ֥וֹל

yip·pō·wl

עֵ֛ץ

‘êṣ

､ בַּדָּר֖וֹם

bad·dā·rō·wm

to the south ､

וְאִ֣ם

wə·’im

or

､ בַּצָּפ֑וֹן

baṣ·ṣā·p̄ō·wn;

the north ､

מְק֛וֹם

mə·qō·wm

in the place

､ שֶׁיִּפּ֥וֹל

še·yip·pō·wl

where falls ､

הָעֵ֖ץ

hā·‘êṣ

the tree

שָׁ֥ם

šām

. יְהֽוּא׃

yə·hū.

שֹׁמֵ֥ר

šō·mêr

He who observes

ר֖וּחַ

rū·aḥ

the wind

לֹ֣א

lō

not

– יִזְרָ֑ע

yiz·rā‘;

will sow –

וְרֹאֶ֥ה

wə·rō·’eh

and he who regards

בֶעָבִ֖ים

ḇe·‘ā·ḇîm

לֹ֥א

lō

not

. יִקְצֽוֹר׃

yiq·ṣō·wr.

will reap .

כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר

ka·’ă·šer

As

אֵֽינְךָ֤

’ê·nə·ḵā

not

יוֹדֵ֙עַ֙

yō·w·ḏê·a‘

מַה־

mah-

what [is]

דֶּ֣רֶךְ

de·reḵ

the way

､ הָר֔וּחַ

hā·rū·aḥ,

of the wind ､

כַּעֲצָמִ֖ים

ka·‘ă·ṣā·mîm

[Or how] the bones [grow]

בְּבֶ֣טֶן

bə·ḇe·ṭen

in the womb

– הַמְּלֵאָ֑ה

ham·mə·lê·’āh;

of her who is pregnant –

כָּ֗כָה

kā·ḵāh,

so

לֹ֤א

lō

not

תֵדַע֙

ṯê·ḏa‘

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה

ma·‘ă·śêh

הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים

hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm,

of God

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

יַעֲשֶׂ֖ה

ya·‘ă·śeh

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

. הַכֹּֽל׃

hak·kōl.

בַּבֹּ֙קֶר֙

bab·bō·qer

In the morning

זְרַ֣ע

zə·ra‘

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ זַרְעֶ֔ךָ

zar·‘e·ḵā,

וְלָעֶ֖רֶב

wə·lā·‘e·reḇ

and in the evening

אַל־

’al-

not

תַּנַּ֣ח

tan·naḥ

– יָדֶ֑ךָ

yā·ḏe·ḵā;

כִּי֩

kî

אֵֽינְךָ֨

’ê·nə·ḵā

not

יוֹדֵ֜ע‪‬

yō·w·ḏê‘

אֵ֣י

’ê

זֶ֤ה

zeh

､ יִכְשָׁר֙

yiḵ·šār

will prosper ､

הֲזֶ֣ה

hă·zeh

אוֹ־

’ōw-

or

､ זֶ֔ה

zeh,

this [one] ､

וְאִם־

wə·’im-

Or

שְׁנֵיהֶ֥ם

šə·nê·hem

the two of them

כְּאֶחָ֖ד

kə·’e·ḥāḏ

as one

. טוֹבִֽים׃

ṭō·w·ḇîm.

[will be] good .

Enjoy Your Years

､ וּמָת֖וֹק

ū·mā·ṯō·wq

And is sweet ､

הָא֑וֹר

hā·’ō·wr;

the [Truly] light

וְט֥וֹב

wə·ṭō·wḇ

and [it is] pleasant

לַֽעֵינַ֖יִם

la·‘ê·na·yim

לִרְא֥וֹת

lir·’ō·wṯ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

. הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃

haš·šā·meš.

the sun .

כִּ֣י

kî

But

אִם־

’im-

if

､ שָׁנִ֥ים

šā·nîm

הַרְבֵּ֛ה

har·bêh

יִחְיֶ֥ה

yiḥ·yeh

הָאָדָ֖ם

hā·’ā·ḏām

– בְּכֻלָּ֣ם

bə·ḵul·lām

in them all –

יִשְׂמָ֑ח

yiś·māḥ;

וְיִזְכֹּר֙

wə·yiz·kōr

and yet let him remember

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

יְמֵ֣י

yə·mê

the days

– הַחֹ֔שֶׁךְ

ha·ḥō·šeḵ,

of darkness –

כִּֽי־

kî-

. הַרְבֵּ֥ה

har·bêh

יִהְי֖וּ

yih·yū

They will be

כָּל־

kāl-

שֶׁבָּ֥א

šeb·bā

. הָֽבֶל׃

hā·ḇel.

[is] vanity .

､ שְׂמַ֧ח

śə·maḥ

､ בָּח֣וּר

bā·ḥūr

– בְּיַלְדוּתֶ֗יךָ

bə·yal·ḏū·ṯe·ḵā,

in your youth –

וִֽיטִֽיבְךָ֤

wî·ṭî·ḇə·ḵā

and let cheer you

לִבְּךָ֙

lib·bə·ḵā

בִּימֵ֣י

bî·mê

in the days

､ בְחוּרוֹתֶ֔ךָ

ḇə·ḥū·rō·w·ṯe·ḵā,

of your youth ､

וְהַלֵּךְ֙

wə·hal·lêḵ

and Walk

בְּדַרְכֵ֣י

bə·ḏar·ḵê

in the ways

､ לִבְּךָ֔

lib·bə·ḵā,

of your heart ､

וּבְמַרְאֵ֖י

ū·ḇə·mar·’ê

and in the sight

. עֵינֶ֑יךָ

‘ê·ne·ḵā;

וְדָ֕ע

wə·ḏā‘

But know

כִּ֧י

kî

עַל־

‘al-

כָּל־

kāl-

אֵ֛לֶּה

’êl·leh

יְבִֽיאֲךָ֥

yə·ḇî·’ă·ḵā

הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים

hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm

. בַּמִּשְׁפָּֽט׃

bam·miš·pāṭ.

into judgment .

וְהָסֵ֥ר

wə·hā·sêr

Therefore remove

כַּ֙עַס֙

ka·‘as

､ מִלִּבֶּ֔ךָ

mil·lib·be·ḵā,

from your heart ､

וְהַעֲבֵ֥ר

wə·ha·‘ă·ḇêr

רָעָ֖ה

rā·‘āh

､ מִבְּשָׂרֶ֑ךָ

mib·bə·śā·re·ḵā;

from your flesh ､

כִּֽי־

kî-

הַיַּלְד֥וּת

hay·yal·ḏūṯ

וְהַֽשַּׁחֲר֖וּת

wə·haš·ša·ḥă·rūṯ

. הָֽבֶל׃

hā·ḇel.
