וְאֵ֗לֶּה

שְׁמוֹת֙

šə·mō·wṯ

[are] the names

בְּנֵ֣י

bə·nê

of the sons

､ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל

yiś·rā·’êl,

of Israel ､

הַבָּאִ֖ים

hab·bā·’îm

– מִצְרָ֑יְמָה

miṣ·rā·yə·māh;

to Egypt –

אֵ֣ת

’êṯ

with

､ יַעֲקֹ֔ב

ya·‘ă·qōḇ,

אִ֥ישׁ

’îš

וּבֵית֖וֹ

ū·ḇê·ṯōw

and his household

. בָּֽאוּ׃

bā·’ū.

､ רְאוּבֵ֣ן

rə·’ū·ḇên

､ שִׁמְע֔וֹן

šim·‘ō·wn,

､ לֵוִ֖י

lê·wî

Levi ､

､ וִיהוּדָֽה׃

wî·hū·ḏāh.

and Judah ､

､ יִשָּׂשכָ֥ר

yiś·śā·š·ḵār

､ זְבוּלֻ֖ן

zə·ḇū·lun

､ וּבְנְיָמִֽן׃‪‬

ū·ḇə·nə·yā·min

and Benjamin ､

דָּ֥ן

dān

､ וְנַפְתָּלִ֖י

wə·nap̄·tā·lî

and Naphtali ､

גָּ֥ד

gāḏ

. וְאָשֵֽׁר׃

wə·’ā·šêr.

and Asher .

וַֽיְהִ֗י

way·hî,

And were

כָּל־

kāl-

נֶ֛פֶשׁ

ne·p̄eš

יֹצְאֵ֥י

yō·ṣə·’ê

יֶֽרֶךְ־

ye·reḵ-

יַעֲקֹ֖ב

ya·‘ă·qōḇ

שִׁבְעִ֣ים

šiḇ·‘îm

､ נָ֑פֶשׁ

nā·p̄eš;

וְיוֹסֵ֖ף

wə·yō·w·sêp̄

הָיָ֥ה

hā·yāh

. בְמִצְרָֽיִם׃

ḇə·miṣ·rā·yim.

[already] in Egypt .

､ וַיָּ֤מָת

way·yā·māṯ

And died ､

יוֹסֵף֙

yō·w·sêp̄

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

and all

､ אֶחָ֔יו

’e·ḥāw,

his brothers ､

וְכֹ֖ל

wə·ḵōl

and all

הַדּ֥וֹר

had·dō·wr

. הַהֽוּא׃

ha·hū.

וּבְנֵ֣י

ū·ḇə·nê

But the sons

יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל

yiś·rā·’êl,

､ פָּר֧וּ

pā·rū

were fruitful ､

､ וַֽיִּשְׁרְצ֛וּ

way·yiš·rə·ṣū

and increased abundantly ､

､ וַיִּרְבּ֥וּ

way·yir·bū

and multiplied ､

וַיַּֽעַצְמ֖וּ

way·ya·‘aṣ·mū

and grew

בִּמְאֹ֣ד

bim·’ōḏ

– מְאֹ֑ד

mə·’ōḏ;

וַתִּמָּלֵ֥א

wat·tim·mā·lê

הָאָ֖רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ

the land

. אֹתָֽם׃

’ō·ṯām.

with them .

Oppression by a New Pharaoh

וַיָּ֥קָם

way·yā·qām

And there arose

מֶֽלֶךְ־

me·leḵ-

חָדָ֖שׁ

ḥā·ḏāš

עַל־

‘al-

､ מִצְרָ֑יִם

miṣ·rā·yim;

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

לֹֽא־

lō-

not

יָדַ֖ע

yā·ḏa‘

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

. יוֹסֵֽף׃

yō·w·sêp̄.

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And he said

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ עַמּ֑וֹ

‘am·mōw;

､ הִנֵּ֗ה

hin·nêh,

Look ､

עַ֚ם

‘am

בְּנֵ֣י

bə·nê

of the sons

יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל

yiś·rā·’êl,

רַ֥ב

raḇ

וְעָצ֖וּם

wə·‘ā·ṣūm

. מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃

mim·men·nū.

than we .

､ הָ֥בָה

hā·ḇāh

Come ､

נִֽתְחַכְּמָ֖ה

niṯ·ḥak·kə·māh

let us deal shrewdly

､ ל֑וֹ

lōw;

with him ､

פֶּן־

pen-

､ יִרְבֶּ֗ה

yir·beh,

he multiply ､

､ וְהָיָ֞ה

wə·hā·yāh

and it happen ､

כִּֽי־

kî-

תִקְרֶ֤אנָה

ṯiq·re·nāh

there falls out

､ מִלְחָמָה֙

mil·ḥā·māh

war ､

וְנוֹסַ֤ף

wə·nō·w·sap̄

גַּם־

gam-

הוּא֙

hū

he

עַל־

‘al-

to

､ שֹׂ֣נְאֵ֔ינוּ

śō·nə·’ê·nū,

our enemies ､

וְנִלְחַם־

wə·nil·ḥam-

､ בָּ֖נוּ

bā·nū

against us ､

וְעָלָ֥ה

wə·‘ā·lāh

and [so] go up

מִן־

min-

. הָאָֽרֶץ׃

hā·’ā·reṣ.

of the land .

וַיָּשִׂ֤ימוּ

way·yā·śî·mū

Therefore they set

עָלָיו֙

‘ā·lāw

שָׂרֵ֣י

śā·rê

-

､ מִסִּ֔ים

mis·sîm,

taskmasters ､

לְמַ֥עַן

lə·ma·‘an

to

עַנֹּת֖וֹ

‘an·nō·ṯōw

. בְּסִבְלֹתָ֑ם

bə·siḇ·lō·ṯām;

with their burdens .

וַיִּ֜בֶן

way·yi·ḇen

עָרֵ֤י

‘ā·rê

מִסְכְּנוֹת֙

mis·kə·nō·wṯ

לְפַרְעֹ֔ה

lə·p̄ar·‘ōh,

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

פִּתֹ֖ם

pi·ṯōm

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

. רַעַמְסֵֽס׃

ra·‘am·sês.

וְכַאֲשֶׁר֙

wə·ḵa·’ă·šer

But the more

יְעַנּ֣וּ

yə·‘an·nū

､ אֹת֔וֹ

’ō·ṯōw,

them ､

כֵּ֥ן

kên

the more

､ יִרְבֶּ֖ה

yir·beh

they multiplied ､

וְכֵ֣ן

wə·ḵên

and

. יִפְרֹ֑ץ

yip̄·rōṣ;

וַיָּקֻ֕צוּ

way·yā·qu·ṣū

And they were in dread

מִפְּנֵ֖י

mip·pə·nê

of

בְּנֵ֥י

bə·nê

the sons

. יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

yiś·rā·’êl.

וַיַּעֲבִ֧דוּ

way·ya·‘ă·ḇi·ḏū

מִצְרַ֛יִם

miṣ·ra·yim

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

בְּנֵ֥י

bə·nê

the sons

יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל

yiś·rā·’êl

– בְּפָֽרֶךְ׃

bə·p̄ā·reḵ.

with rigor –

וַיְמָרְר֨וּ

way·mā·rə·rū

and they made bitter

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

חַיֵּיהֶ֜ם

ḥay·yê·hem

､ בַּעֲבֹדָ֣ה

ba·‘ă·ḇō·ḏāh

with bondage ､

קָשָׁ֗ה

qā·šāh,

､ בְּחֹ֙מֶר֙

bə·ḥō·mer

in mortar ､

､ וּבִלְבֵנִ֔ים

ū·ḇil·ḇê·nîm,

and in brick ､

וּבְכָל־

ū·ḇə·ḵāl

and in all manner

עֲבֹדָ֖ה

‘ă·ḇō·ḏāh

､ בַּשָּׂדֶ֑ה

baś·śā·ḏeh;

in the field ､

אֵ֚ת

’êṯ

-

כָּל־

kāl-

､ עֲבֹ֣דָתָ֔ם

‘ă·ḇō·ḏā·ṯām,

their service ､

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

､ עָבְד֥וּ

‘ā·ḇə·ḏū

they made serve ､

בָהֶ֖ם

ḇā·hem

. בְּפָֽרֶךְ׃

bə·p̄ā·reḵ.

with harshness .

Pharoah Orders Male Children Killed

וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙

way·yō·mer

מֶ֣לֶךְ

me·leḵ

the king

מִצְרַ֔יִם

miṣ·ra·yim,

לַֽמְיַלְּדֹ֖ת

lam·yal·lə·ḏōṯ

to the midwives

､ הָֽעִבְרִיֹּ֑ת

hā·‘iḇ·rî·yōṯ;

Hebrewesses ､

אֲשֶׁ֨ר

’ă·šer

שֵׁ֤ם

the name

הָֽאַחַת֙

hā·’a·ḥaṯ

of one

､ שִׁפְרָ֔ה

šip̄·rāh,

[was] Shiphrah ､

וְשֵׁ֥ם

wə·šêm

and the name

הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית

haš·šê·nîṯ

of the second

. פּוּעָֽה׃

pū·‘āh.

､ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר

way·yō·mer,

And he said ､

בְּיַלֶּדְכֶן֙

bə·yal·leḏ·ḵen

when you help give birth

אֶת־

’eṯ-

､ הָֽעִבְרִיּ֔וֹת

hā·‘iḇ·rî·yō·wṯ,

the Hebrewesses ､

וּרְאִיתֶ֖ן

ū·rə·’î·ṯen

and see [them]

עַל־

‘al-

on

– הָאָבְנָ֑יִם

hā·’ā·ḇə·nā·yim;

the birthstools –

אִם־

’im-

if

בֵּ֥ן

bên

[is] a son

､ הוּא֙

hū

it ､

וַהֲמִתֶּ֣ן

wa·hă·mit·ten

then you shall kill

､ אֹת֔וֹ

’ō·ṯōw,

him ､

וְאִם־

wə·’im-

but if

בַּ֥ת

baṯ

[is] a daughter

､ הִ֖יא

hî

it ､

. וָחָֽיָה׃

wā·ḥā·yāh.

then she shall live .

וַתִּירֶ֤אןָ

wat·tî·re·nā

הַֽמְיַלְּדֹת֙

ham·yal·lə·ḏōṯ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔ים

hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm,

God ､

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

and not

עָשׂ֔וּ

‘ā·śū,

did do

כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר

ka·’ă·šer

as

דִּבֶּ֥ר

dib·ber

אֲלֵיהֶ֖ן

’ă·lê·hen

מֶ֣לֶךְ

me·leḵ

the king

､ מִצְרָ֑יִם

miṣ·rā·yim;

of Egypt ､

וַתְּחַיֶּ֖יןָ

wat·tə·ḥay·ye·nā

but saved alive

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

. הַיְלָדִֽים׃

hay·lā·ḏîm.

the male children .

וַיִּקְרָ֤א

way·yiq·rā

מֶֽלֶךְ־

me·leḵ-

the king

מִצְרַ֙יִם֙

miṣ·ra·yim

לַֽמְיַלְּדֹ֔ת

lam·yal·lə·ḏōṯ,

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

way·yō·mer

and said

､ לָהֶ֔ן

lā·hen,

to them ､

מַדּ֥וּעַ

mad·dū·a‘

עֲשִׂיתֶ֖ן

‘ă·śî·ṯen

הַדָּבָ֣ר

had·dā·ḇār

､ הַזֶּ֑ה

haz·zeh;

this ､

וַתְּחַיֶּ֖יןָ

wat·tə·ḥay·ye·nā

and saved alive

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

. הַיְלָדִֽים׃

hay·lā·ḏîm.

the male children .

וַתֹּאמַ֤רְןָ

wat·tō·mar·nā

And said

הַֽמְיַלְּדֹת֙

ham·yal·lə·ḏōṯ

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ פַּרְעֹ֔ה

par·‘ōh,

כִּ֣י

kî

לֹ֧א

lō

not

– כַנָּשִׁ֛ים

ḵan·nā·šîm

[are] like the women –

הַמִּצְרִיֹּ֖ת

ham·miṣ·rî·yōṯ

– הָֽעִבְרִיֹּ֑ת

hā·‘iḇ·rî·yōṯ;

the Hebrewesses –

כִּֽי־

kî-

חָי֣וֹת

ḥā·yō·wṯ

､ הֵ֔נָּה

hên·nāh,

they ､

בְּטֶ֨רֶם

bə·ṭe·rem

תָּב֧וֹא

tā·ḇō·w

､ אֲלֵהֶ֛ן

’ă·lê·hen

to them ､

הַמְיַלֶּ֖דֶת

ham·yal·le·ḏeṯ

. וְיָלָֽדוּ׃

wə·yā·lā·ḏū.

they give birth .

וַיֵּ֥יטֶב

way·yê·ṭeḇ

Therefore dealt well

אֱלֹהִ֖ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm

､ לַֽמְיַלְּדֹ֑ת

lam·yal·lə·ḏōṯ;

with the midwives ､

וַיִּ֧רֶב

way·yi·reḇ

､ הָעָ֛ם

hā·‘ām

the people ､

וַיַּֽעַצְמ֖וּ

way·ya·‘aṣ·mū

and they grew mighty

. מְאֹֽד׃

mə·’ōḏ.

､ וַיְהִ֕י

way·hî

And so it was ､

כִּֽי־

kî-

יָֽרְא֥וּ

yā·rə·’ū

הַֽמְיַלְּדֹ֖ת

ham·yal·lə·ḏōṯ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים

hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm;

God ､

וַיַּ֥עַשׂ

way·ya·‘aś

that He provided

לָהֶ֖ם

lā·hem

. בָּתִּֽים׃

bāt·tîm.

וַיְצַ֣ו

way·ṣaw

פַּרְעֹ֔ה

par·‘ōh,

לְכָל־

lə·ḵāl

､ עַמּ֖וֹ

‘am·mōw

､ לֵאמֹ֑ר

lê·mōr;

כָּל־

kāl-

הַבֵּ֣ן

hab·bên

､ הַיִּלּ֗וֹד

hay·yil·lō·wḏ,

who is born ､

הַיְאֹ֙רָה֙

hay·’ō·rāh

､ תַּשְׁלִיכֻ֔הוּ

taš·lî·ḵu·hū,

you shall cast ､

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

הַבַּ֖ת

hab·baṯ

. תְּחַיּֽוּן׃

tə·ḥay·yūn.

you shall save alive .
