The Birth of Moses

וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ

of the house

､ לֵוִ֑י

of Levi ､

וַיִּקַּ֖ח

way·yiq·qaḥ

and took [as wife]

אֶת־

’eṯ-

a

בַּת־

baṯ-

. לֵוִֽי׃

lê·wî.

of Levi .

וַתַּ֥הַר

wat·ta·har

､ הָאִשָּׁ֖ה

hā·’iš·šāh

the woman ､

וַתֵּ֣לֶד

wat·tê·leḏ

and bore

– בֵּ֑ן

bên;

a son –

וַתֵּ֤רֶא

wat·tê·re

and when she saw

､ אֹתוֹ֙

’ō·ṯōw

- ､

כִּי־

kî-

ט֣וֹב

ṭō·wḇ

[was] beautiful

､ ה֔וּא

hū,

he ､

וַֽתִּצְפְּנֵ֖הוּ

wat·tiṣ·pə·nê·hū

then she hid him

שְׁלֹשָׁ֥ה

šə·lō·šāh

. יְרָחִֽים׃

yə·rā·ḥîm.

וְלֹא־

wə·lō-

But when no

יָכְלָ֣ה

yā·ḵə·lāh

עוֹד֮

‘ō·wḏ

､ הַצְּפִינוֹ֒

haṣ·ṣə·p̄î·nōw

וַתִּֽקַּֽח־

wat·tiq·qaḥ-

לוֹ֙

lōw

תֵּ֣בַת

tê·ḇaṯ

an ark

､ גֹּ֔מֶא

gō·me,

of bulrushes ､

וַתַּחְמְרָ֥ה

wat·taḥ·mə·rāh

and daubed it

בַחֵמָ֖ר

ḇa·ḥê·mār

､ וּבַזָּ֑פֶת

ū·ḇaz·zā·p̄eṯ;

and pitch ､

וַתָּ֤שֶׂם

wat·tā·śem

and put

בָּהּ֙

bāh

in it

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הַיֶּ֔לֶד

hay·ye·leḏ,

the child ､

וַתָּ֥שֶׂם

wat·tā·śem

and laid [it]

בַּסּ֖וּף

bas·sūp̄

in the reeds

עַל־

‘al-

by

שְׂפַ֥ת

śə·p̄aṯ

. הַיְאֹֽר׃

hay·’ōr.

of the Nile .

וַתֵּתַצַּ֥ב

wat·tê·ṯaṣ·ṣaḇ

אֲחֹת֖וֹ

’ă·ḥō·ṯōw

､ מֵרָחֹ֑ק

mê·rā·ḥōq;

לְדֵעָ֕ה

lə·ḏê·‘āh

מַה־

mah-

יֵּעָשֶׂ֖ה

yê·‘ā·śeh

. לֽוֹ׃

to him .

Pharaoh's Daughter Rescues Moses

וַתֵּ֤רֶד

wat·tê·reḏ

בַּת־

baṯ-

פַּרְעֹה֙

par·‘ōh

לִרְחֹ֣ץ

lir·ḥōṣ

עַל־

‘al-

at

– הַיְאֹ֔ר

hay·’ōr,

the Nile –

וְנַעֲרֹתֶ֥יהָ

wə·na·‘ă·rō·ṯe·hā

and her maidens

הֹלְכֹ֖ת

hō·lə·ḵōṯ

עַל־

‘al-

יַ֣ד

yaḏ

the side

– הַיְאֹ֑ר

hay·’ōr;

of the Nile –

וַתֵּ֤רֶא

wat·tê·re

and when she saw

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הַתֵּבָה֙

hat·tê·ḇāh

the ark

בְּת֣וֹךְ

bə·ṯō·wḵ

､ הַסּ֔וּף

has·sūp̄,

the reeds ､

וַתִּשְׁלַ֥ח

wat·tiš·laḥ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

אֲמָתָ֖הּ

’ă·mā·ṯāh

her maidservant

. וַתִּקָּחֶֽהָ‪‬

wat·tiq·qā·ḥe·hā

then to retrieve it .

､ וַתִּפְתַּח֙

wat·tip̄·taḥ

And when she had opened [it] ､

וַתִּרְאֵ֣הוּ

wat·tir·’ê·hū

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הַיֶּ֔לֶד

hay·ye·leḏ,

the child ､

､ וְהִנֵּה־

wə·hin·nêh-

and behold ､

נַ֖עַר

na·‘ar

. בֹּכֶ֑ה

bō·ḵeh;

וַתַּחְמֹ֣ל

wat·taḥ·mōl

So she had compassion

עָלָ֔יו

‘ā·lāw,

on him

､ וַתֹּ֕אמֶר

wat·tō·mer

and said ､

מִיַּלְדֵ֥י

mî·yal·ḏê

[one] of children

הָֽעִבְרִ֖ים

hā·‘iḇ·rîm

of the Hebrews

. זֶֽה׃

zeh.

this [is] .

וַתֹּ֣אמֶר

wat·tō·mer

And said

אֲחֹתוֹ֮

’ă·ḥō·ṯōw

אֶל־

’el-

to

בַּת־

baṯ-

､ פַּרְעֹה֒

par·‘ōh

of Pharaoh ､

הַאֵלֵ֗ךְ

ha·’ê·lêḵ,

shall I go

וְקָרָ֤אתִי

wə·qā·rā·ṯî

and call

לָךְ֙

lāḵ

אִשָּׁ֣ה

’iš·šāh

מֵינֶ֔קֶת

mê·ne·qeṯ,

מִ֖ן

min

､ הָעִבְרִיֹּ֑ת

hā·‘iḇ·rî·yōṯ;

the Hebrewesses ､

וְתֵינִ֥ק

wə·ṯê·niq

that she may nurse

לָ֖ךְ

lāḵ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

. הַיָּֽלֶד׃

hay·yā·leḏ.

the child .

וַתֹּֽאמֶר־

wat·tō·mer-

And said

לָ֥הּ

lāh

to her

בַּת־

baṯ-

､ פַּרְעֹ֖ה

par·‘ōh

of Pharaoh ､

. לֵ֑כִי

lê·ḵî;

go .

וַתֵּ֙לֶךְ֙

wat·tê·leḵ

הָֽעַלְמָ֔ה

hā·‘al·māh,

וַתִּקְרָ֖א

wat·tiq·rā

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

אֵ֥ם

’êm

. הַיָּֽלֶד׃

hay·yā·leḏ.

of the child .

וַתֹּ֧אמֶר

wat·tō·mer

And said

לָ֣הּ

lāh

to her

בַּת־

baṯ-

､ פַּרְעֹ֗ה

par·‘ōh,

of Pharaoh ､

הֵילִ֜יכִי

hê·lî·ḵî

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הַיֶּ֤לֶד

hay·ye·leḏ

､ הַזֶּה֙

haz·zeh

this ､

וְהֵינִקִ֣הוּ

wə·hê·ni·qi·hū

､ לִ֔י

lî,

for me ､

וַאֲנִ֖י

wa·’ă·nî

and I

אֶתֵּ֣ן

’et·tên

will give [you]

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

. שְׂכָרֵ֑ךְ

śə·ḵā·rêḵ;

וַתִּקַּ֧ח

wat·tiq·qaḥ

הָאִשָּׁ֛ה

hā·’iš·šāh

הַיֶּ֖לֶד

hay·ye·leḏ

. וַתְּנִיקֵֽהוּ׃

wat·tə·nî·qê·hū.

and nursed him .

וַיִגְדַּ֣ל‪‬

wa·yiḡ·dal

And grew

､ הַיֶּ֗לֶד

hay·ye·leḏ,

the child ､

וַתְּבִאֵ֙הוּ֙

wat·tə·ḇi·’ê·hū

and she brought him

לְבַת־

lə·ḇaṯ-

unto the daughter

､ פַּרְעֹ֔ה

par·‘ōh,

of Pharaoh ､

וַֽיְהִי־

way·hî-

and he became

לָ֖הּ

lāh

. לְבֵ֑ן

lə·ḇên;

וַתִּקְרָ֤א

wat·tiq·rā

שְׁמוֹ֙

šə·mōw

､ מֹשֶׁ֔ה

mō·šeh,

､ וַתֹּ֕אמֶר

wat·tō·mer

and said ､

כִּ֥י

kî

מִן־

min-

הַמַּ֖יִם

ham·ma·yim

of the water

. מְשִׁיתִֽהוּ׃

mə·šî·ṯi·hū.

Moses Kills an Egyptian

וַיְהִ֣י ׀

way·hî

And it came to pass

בַּיָּמִ֣ים

bay·yā·mîm

､ הָהֵ֗ם

hā·hêm,

וַיִּגְדַּ֤ל

way·yiḡ·dal

that when was grown

､ מֹשֶׁה֙

mō·šeh

וַיֵּצֵ֣א

way·yê·ṣê

that he went out

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ אֶחָ֔יו

’e·ḥāw,

his brothers ､

וַיַּ֖רְא

way·yar

– בְּסִבְלֹתָ֑ם

bə·siḇ·lō·ṯām;

at their burdens –

וַיַּרְא֙

way·yar

and he saw

אִ֣ישׁ

’îš

-

מִצְרִ֔י

miṣ·rî,

מַכֶּ֥ה

mak·keh

אִישׁ־

’îš-

-

עִבְרִ֖י

‘iḇ·rî

. מֵאֶחָֽיו׃

mê·’e·ḥāw.

of his brothers .

וַיִּ֤פֶן

way·yi·p̄en

So he looked

כֹּה֙

kōh

､ וָכֹ֔ה

wā·ḵōh,

[and] that way ､

וַיַּ֖רְא

way·yar

and when he saw

כִּ֣י

kî

אֵ֣ין

’ên

no

､ אִ֑ישׁ

’îš;

one ､

וַיַּךְ֙

way·yaḵ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הַמִּצְרִ֔י

ham·miṣ·rî,

the Egyptian ､

וַֽיִּטְמְנֵ֖הוּ

way·yiṭ·mə·nê·hū

. בַּחֽוֹל׃

ba·ḥō·wl.

in the sand .

וַיֵּצֵא֙

way·yê·ṣê

And when he went out

בַּיּ֣וֹם

bay·yō·wm

the day

､ הַשֵּׁנִ֔י

haš·šê·nî,

וְהִנֵּ֛ה

wə·hin·nêh

שְׁנֵֽי־

šə·nê-

אֲנָשִׁ֥ים

’ă·nā·šîm

עִבְרִ֖ים

‘iḇ·rîm

– נִצִּ֑ים

niṣ·ṣîm;

were fighting –

וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙

way·yō·mer

and he said

､ לָֽרָשָׁ֔ע

lā·rā·šā‘,

to the one who did the wrong ､

לָ֥מָּה

lām·māh

תַכֶּ֖ה

ṯak·keh

are you striking

؟ רֵעֶֽךָ׃

rê·‘e·ḵā.

your companion ؟

､ וַ֠יֹּאמֶר

way·yō·mer

and he said ､

מִ֣י

mî

שָֽׂמְךָ֞

śā·mə·ḵā

לְאִ֨ישׁ

lə·’îš

-

שַׂ֤ר

śar

וְשֹׁפֵט֙

wə·šō·p̄êṭ

and a judge

؟ עָלֵ֔ינוּ

‘ā·lê·nū,

over us ؟

הַלְהָרְגֵ֙נִי֙

hal·hā·rə·ḡê·nî

to kill me

אַתָּ֣ה

’at·tāh

､ אֹמֵ֔ר

’ō·mêr,

כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר

ka·’ă·šer

as

הָרַ֖גְתָּ

hā·raḡ·tā

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

؟ הַמִּצְרִ֑י

ham·miṣ·rî;

the Egyptian ؟

וַיִּירָ֤א

way·yî·rā

､ מֹשֶׁה֙

mō·šeh

､ וַיֹּאמַ֔ר

way·yō·mar,

and said ､

אָכֵ֖ן

’ā·ḵên

נוֹדַ֥ע

nō·w·ḏa‘

. הַדָּבָֽר׃

had·dā·ḇār.

Moses Flees to Midian

וַיִּשְׁמַ֤ע

way·yiš·ma‘

פַּרְעֹה֙

par·‘ōh

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הַדָּבָ֣ר

had·dā·ḇār

､ הַזֶּ֔ה

haz·zeh,

this ､

וַיְבַקֵּ֖שׁ

way·ḇaq·qêš

לַהֲרֹ֣ג

la·hă·rōḡ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

. מֹשֶׁ֑ה

mō·šeh;

וַיִּבְרַ֤ח

way·yiḇ·raḥ

But fled

מֹשֶׁה֙

mō·šeh

מִפְּנֵ֣י

mip·pə·nê

､ פַרְעֹ֔ה

p̄ar·‘ōh,

of Pharaoh ､

וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב

way·yê·šeḇ

בְּאֶֽרֶץ־

bə·’e·reṣ-

in the land

､ מִדְיָ֖ן

miḏ·yān

of Midian ､

וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב

way·yê·šeḇ

and he sat down

עַֽל־

‘al-

by

. הַבְּאֵֽר׃

hab·bə·’êr.

a well .

וּלְכֹהֵ֥ן

ū·lə·ḵō·hên

מִדְיָ֖ן

miḏ·yān

שֶׁ֣בַע

še·ḇa‘

– בָּנ֑וֹת

bā·nō·wṯ;

וַתָּבֹ֣אנָה

wat·tā·ḇō·nāh

､ וַתִּדְלֶ֗נָה

wat·tiḏ·le·nāh,

and drew water ､

וַתְּמַלֶּ֙אנָה֙

wat·tə·mal·le·nāh

אֶת־

’eṯ-

הָ֣רְהָטִ֔ים

hā·rə·hā·ṭîm,

לְהַשְׁק֖וֹת

lə·haš·qō·wṯ

צֹ֥אן

ṣōn

. אֲבִיהֶֽן׃

’ă·ḇî·hen.

of their father .

וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ

way·yā·ḇō·’ū

And came

הָרֹעִ֖ים

hā·rō·‘îm

– וַיְגָרְשׁ֑וּם

way·ḡā·rə·šūm;

and drove them away –

וַיָּ֤קָם

way·yā·qām

but stood up

מֹשֶׁה֙

mō·šeh

וַיּ֣וֹשִׁעָ֔ן

way·yō·wō·ši·‘ān,

and helped them

וַיַּ֖שְׁקְ

way·yašq

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

. צֹאנָֽם׃

ṣō·nām.

וַתָּבֹ֕אנָה

wat·tā·ḇō·nāh

אֶל־

’el-

to

רְעוּאֵ֖ל

rə·‘ū·’êl

､ אֲבִיהֶ֑ן

’ă·ḇî·hen;

their father ､

､ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר

way·yō·mer

and he said ､

מַדּ֛וּעַ

mad·dū·a‘

מִהַרְתֶּ֥ן

mi·har·ten

בֹּ֖א

bō

have you returned

؟ הַיּֽוֹם׃

hay·yō·wm.

､ וַתֹּאמַ֕רְןָ

wat·tō·mar·nā

and they said ､

אִ֣ישׁ

’îš

-

מִצְרִ֔י

miṣ·rî,

הִצִּילָ֖נוּ

hiṣ·ṣî·lā·nū

מִיַּ֣ד

mî·yaḏ

､ הָרֹעִ֑ים

hā·rō·‘îm;

of the shepherds ､

וְגַם־

wə·ḡam-

and also

דָּלֹ֤ה

dā·lōh

דָלָה֙

ḏā·lāh

､ לָ֔נוּ

lā·nū,

for us ､

וַיַּ֖שְׁקְ

way·yašq

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

. הַצֹּֽאן׃

haṣ·ṣōn.

the flock .

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר

way·yō·mer

So he said

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ בְּנֹתָ֖יו

bə·nō·ṯāw

his daughters ､

؟ וְאַיּ֑וֹ

wə·’ay·yōw;

and where [is] he ؟

לָ֤מָּה

lām·māh

זֶּה֙

zeh

[is] this

עֲזַבְתֶּ֣ן

‘ă·zaḇ·ten

[that] you have left

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

؟ הָאִ֔ישׁ

hā·’îš,

the man ؟

קִרְאֶ֥ן

qir·’en

､ ל֖וֹ

lōw

him ､

וְיֹ֥אכַל

wə·yō·ḵal

that he may eat

. לָֽחֶם׃

lā·ḥem.

וַיּ֥וֹאֶל

way·yō·w·’el

And was content

מֹשֶׁ֖ה

mō·šeh

לָשֶׁ֣בֶת

lā·še·ḇeṯ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

with

､ הָאִ֑ישׁ

hā·’îš;

the man ､

וַיִּתֵּ֛ן

way·yit·tên

and he gave

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

צִפֹּרָ֥ה

ṣip·pō·rāh

בִתּ֖וֹ

ḇit·tōw

. לְמֹשֶֽׁה׃

lə·mō·šeh.

to Moses .

וַתֵּ֣לֶד

wat·tê·leḏ

And she bore [him]

､ בֵּ֔ן

bên,

a son ､

וַיִּקְרָ֥א

way·yiq·rā

and he called

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

שְׁמ֖וֹ

šə·mōw

､ גֵּרְשֹׁ֑ם

gê·rə·šōm;

כִּ֣י

kî

､ אָמַ֔ר

’ā·mar,

he said ､

גֵּ֣ר

gêr

הָיִ֔יתִי

hā·yî·ṯî,

. בְּאֶ֖רֶץ

bə·’e·reṣ

in a land .

. נָכְרִיָּֽה׃

nā·ḵə·rî·yāh.

God Hears the Israelites' Cry

וַיְהִי֩

And it came to pass

בַיָּמִ֨ים

ḇay·yā·mîm

הָֽרַבִּ֜ים

hā·rab·bîm

､ הָהֵ֗ם

hā·hêm,

. וַיָּ֙מָת֙

way·yā·māṯ

מֶ֣לֶךְ

me·leḵ

The king

､ מִצְרַ֔יִם

miṣ·ra·yim,

of Egypt ､

וַיֵּאָנְח֧וּ

way·yê·’ā·nə·ḥū

בְנֵֽי־

ḇə·nê-

the sons

יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל

yiś·rā·’êl

מִן־

min-

– הָעֲבֹדָ֖ה

hā·‘ă·ḇō·ḏāh

of the bondage –

､ וַיִּזְעָ֑קוּ

way·yiz·‘ā·qū;

and they cried out ､

וַתַּ֧עַל

wat·ta·‘al

And came up

שַׁוְעָתָ֛ם

šaw·‘ā·ṯām

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים

hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm

God ､

מִן־

min-

. הָעֲבֹדָֽה׃

hā·‘ă·ḇō·ḏāh.

of the bondage .

וַיִּשְׁמַ֥ע

way·yiš·ma‘

אֱלֹהִ֖ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ נַאֲקָתָ֑ם

na·’ă·qā·ṯām;

their groaning ､

וַיִּזְכֹּ֤ר

way·yiz·kōr

אֱלֹהִים֙

’ĕ·lō·hîm

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

בְּרִית֔וֹ

bə·rî·ṯōw,

אֶת־

’eṯ-

with

､ אַבְרָהָ֖ם

’aḇ·rā·hām

אֶת־

’eṯ-

with

､ יִצְחָ֥ק

yiṣ·ḥāq

וְאֶֽת־

wə·’eṯ-

and with

. יַעֲקֹֽב׃

ya·‘ă·qōḇ.

וַיַּ֥רְא

way·yar

And looked upon

אֱלֹהִ֖ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

בְּנֵ֣י

bə·nê

the sons

､ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל

yiś·rā·’êl;

of Israel ､

וַיֵּ֖דַע

way·yê·ḏa‘

. אֱלֹהִֽים׃

’ĕ·lō·hîm.
