Nehemiah Sent to Jerusalem

וַיְהִ֣י ׀

And it came to pass

בְּחֹ֣דֶשׁ

bə·ḥō·ḏeš

in the month

､ נִיסָ֗ן

nî·sān,

of Nisan ､

שְׁנַ֥ת

šə·naṯ

in the year

עֶשְׂרִ֛ים

‘eś·rîm

לְאַרְתַּחְשַׁ֥סְתְּא

lə·’ar·taḥ·šast

､ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ

ham·me·leḵ

King ､

יַ֣יִן

ya·yin

[when] wine [was]

לְפָנָ֑יו

lə·p̄ā·nāw;

וָאֶשָּׂ֤א

wā·’eś·śā

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הַיַּ֙יִן֙

hay·ya·yin

the wine ､

וָאֶתְּנָ֣ה

wā·’et·tə·nāh

and gave it

. לַמֶּ֔לֶךְ

lam·me·leḵ,

to the king .

וְלֹא־

wə·lō-

הָיִ֥יתִי

hā·yî·ṯî

I had been before

רַ֖ע

ra‘

. לְפָנָֽיו׃

lə·p̄ā·nāw.

in his presence .

וַיֹּאמֶר֩

way·yō·mer

לִ֨י

lî

to me

הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ

ham·me·leḵ

the king

מַדּ֣וּעַ ׀

mad·dū·a‘

why [is]

פָּנֶ֣יךָ

pā·ne·ḵā

､ רָעִ֗ים

rā·‘îm,

sad ､

וְאַתָּה֙

wə·’at·tāh

since you [are]

אֵֽינְךָ֣

’ê·nə·ḵā

not

؟ חוֹלֶ֔ה

ḥō·w·leh,

אֵ֣ין

’ên

זֶ֔ה

zeh,

this [is]

כִּי־

kî-

אִ֖ם

’im

but

רֹ֣עַֽ

rō·a‘

. לֵ֑ב

lêḇ;

of heart .

､ וָאִירָ֖א

wā·’î·rā

So I became afraid ､

הַרְבֵּ֥ה

har·bêh

. מְאֹֽד׃

mə·’ōḏ.

then I was very .

וָאֹמַ֣ר

wā·’ō·mar

And said

､ לַמֶּ֔לֶךְ

lam·me·leḵ,

to the king ､

הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ

ham·me·leḵ

the king

. לְעוֹלָ֣ם

lə·‘ō·w·lām

יִחְיֶ֑ה

yiḥ·yeh;

מַדּ֜וּעַ

mad·dū·a‘

לֹא־

lō-

not

､ יֵרְע֣וּ

yê·rə·‘ū

should be sad ､

פָנַ֗י

p̄ā·nay,

אֲשֶׁ֨ר

’ă·šer

､ הָעִ֜יר

hā·‘îr

the city ､

בֵּית־

bêṯ-

､ קִבְר֤וֹת

qiḇ·rō·wṯ

of tombs ､

אֲבֹתַי֙

’ă·ḇō·ṯay

חֲרֵבָ֔ה

ḥă·rê·ḇāh,

וּשְׁעָרֶ֖יהָ

ū·šə·‘ā·re·hā

אֻכְּל֥וּ

’uk·kə·lū

؟ בָאֵֽשׁ׃

ḇā·’êš.

with fire ؟

and said

לִי֙

to me

הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ

ham·me·leḵ,

the king

עַל־

‘al-

מַה־

mah-

זֶּ֖ה

zeh

[is] this [that]

אַתָּ֣ה

’at·tāh

؟ מְבַקֵּ֑שׁ

mə·ḇaq·qêš;

וָֽאֶתְפַּלֵּ֔ל

wā·’eṯ·pal·lêl,

אֶל־

’el-

to

אֱלֹהֵ֖י

’ĕ·lō·hê

the God

. הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃

haš·šā·mā·yim.

וָאֹמַ֣ר

wā·’ō·mar

And I said

､ לַמֶּ֔לֶךְ

lam·me·leḵ,

to the king ､

אִם־

’im-

if

עַל־

‘al-

on

､ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ

ham·me·leḵ

the king ､

ט֔וֹב

ṭō·wḇ,

וְאִם־

wə·’im-

and if

יִיטַ֥ב

yî·ṭaḇ

has found favor

עַבְדְּךָ֖

‘aḇ·də·ḵā

､ לְפָנֶ֑יךָ

lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā;

in your sight ､

אֲשֶׁ֧ר

’ă·šer

תִּשְׁלָחֵ֣נִי

tiš·lā·ḥê·nî

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ יְהוּדָ֗ה

yə·hū·ḏāh,

אֶל־

’el-

to

עִ֛יר

‘îr

the city

､ קִבְר֥וֹת

qiḇ·rō·wṯ

of tombs ､

אֲבֹתַ֖י

’ă·ḇō·ṯay

. וְאֶבְנֶֽנָּה׃

wə·’eḇ·nen·nāh.

that I may rebuild it .

וַיֹּאמֶר֩

way·yō·mer

And said

לִ֨י

lî

to me

הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ

ham·me·leḵ

the king

וְהַשֵּׁגַ֣ל ׀

wə·haš·šê·ḡal

and the queen

יוֹשֶׁ֣בֶת

yō·wō·še·ḇeṯ

אֶצְל֗וֹ

’eṣ·lōw,

עַד־

‘aḏ-

מָתַ֛י

mā·ṯay

؟ יִהְיֶ֥ה

yih·yeh

will be ؟

מַֽהֲלָכֲךָ֖

ma·hă·lā·ḵă·ḵā

וּמָתַ֣י

ū·mā·ṯay

and when

؟ תָּשׁ֑וּב

tā·šūḇ;

will you return ؟

וַיִּיטַ֤ב

way·yî·ṭaḇ

לִפְנֵֽי־

lip̄·nê-

הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙

ham·me·leḵ

the king

וַיִּשְׁלָחֵ֔נִי

way·yiš·lā·ḥê·nî,

and to send me

וָֽאֶתְּנָ֥ה

wā·’et·tə·nāh

and I set

ל֖וֹ

lōw

. זְמָֽן׃

zə·mān.

a time .

וָאוֹמַר֮

wā·’ō·w·mar

And Furthermore I said

､ לַמֶּלֶךְ֒

lam·me·leḵ

to the king ､

אִם־

’im-

if

עַל־

‘al-

on

､ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ

ham·me·leḵ

the king ､

ט֔וֹב

ṭō·wḇ,

אִגְּרוֹת֙

’ig·gə·rō·wṯ

יִתְּנוּ־

yit·tə·nū-

לִ֔י

lî,

to me

עַֽל־

‘al-

פַּחֲו֖וֹת

pa·ḥă·wō·wṯ

the governors [of the region]

עֵ֣בֶר

‘ê·ḇer

､ הַנָּהָ֑ר

han·nā·hār;

the River ､

אֲשֶׁר֙

’ă·šer

יַעֲבִיר֔וּנִי

ya·‘ă·ḇî·rū·nî,

they must permit me to pass through

עַ֥ד

‘aḏ

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

אָב֖וֹא

’ā·ḇō·w

אֶל־

’el-

to

– יְהוּדָֽה׃

yə·hū·ḏāh.

וְאִגֶּ֡רֶת

wə·’ig·ge·reṯ

and a letter

אֶל־

’el-

to

אָסָף֩

’ā·sāp̄

שֹׁמֵ֨ר

šō·mêr

､ הַפַּרְדֵּ֜ס

hap·par·dês

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

לַמֶּ֗לֶךְ

of the king

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

יִתֶּן־

לִ֣י

שַׁעֲרֵ֨י

הַבִּירָ֤ה

of the citadel

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

which [pertains]

､ לַבַּ֙יִת֙

lab·ba·yiṯ

to the temple ､

וּלְחוֹמַ֣ת

ū·lə·ḥō·w·maṯ

､ הָעִ֔יר

hā·‘îr,

city ､

וְלַבַּ֖יִת

wə·lab·ba·yiṯ

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

אָב֣וֹא

’ā·ḇō·w

I will occupy

. אֵלָ֑יו

’ê·lāw;

וַיִּתֶּן־

way·yit·ten-

And granted [them]

לִ֣י

lî

to me

הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ

ham·me·leḵ,

the king

כְּיַד־

kə·yaḏ-

according to hand

אֱלֹהַ֖י

’ĕ·lō·hay

of my God

הַטּוֹבָ֥ה

haṭ·ṭō·w·ḇāh

the good

. עָלָֽי׃

‘ā·lāy.

upon me .

וָֽאָב֗וֹא

wā·’ā·ḇō·w,

And I went

אֶֽל־

’el-

to

פַּֽחֲווֹת֙

pa·ḥă·wō·wṯ

the governors [in the region]

עֵ֣בֶר

‘ê·ḇer

､ הַנָּהָ֔ר

han·nā·hār,

the River ､

וָאֶתְּנָ֣ה

wā·’et·tə·nāh

and gave

לָהֶ֔ם

lā·hem,

אֵ֖ת

’êṯ

-

. אִגְּר֣וֹת

’ig·gə·rō·wṯ

הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ

ham·me·leḵ;

Of the king

וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח

way·yiš·laḥ

עִמִּי֙

‘im·mî

with me

הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ

ham·me·leḵ,

the king

שָׂ֥רֵי

śā·rê

חַ֖יִל

ḥa·yil

of the army

. וּפָרָשִֽׁים׃

ū·p̄ā·rā·šîm.

And when heard [of it]

סַנְבַלַּ֣ט

san·ḇal·laṭ

､ הַחֹרֹנִ֗י

ha·ḥō·rō·nî,

the Horonite ､

וְטֽוֹבִיָּה֙

wə·ṭō·w·ḇî·yāh

､ הָעֶ֣בֶד

hā·‘e·ḇeḏ

､ הָֽעַמֹּנִ֔י

hā·‘am·mō·nî,

the Ammonite ､

וַיֵּ֥רַע

way·yê·ra‘

and were disturbed

לָהֶ֖ם

lā·hem

רָעָ֣ה

rā·‘āh

גְדֹלָ֑ה

ḡə·ḏō·lāh;

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

בָּ֥א

bā

אָדָ֔ם

’ā·ḏām,

לְבַקֵּ֥שׁ

lə·ḇaq·qêš

טוֹבָ֖ה

ṭō·w·ḇāh

לִבְנֵ֥י

liḇ·nê

of the sons

. יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

yiś·rā·’êl.

Nehemiah Inspects the Walls

וָאָב֖וֹא

wā·’ā·ḇō·w

So I came

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם

yə·rū·šā·lim;

וָאֱהִי־

wā·’ĕ·hî-

and was

שָׁ֖ם

šām

יָמִ֥ים

yā·mîm

. שְׁלֹשָֽׁה׃

šə·lō·šāh.

וָאָק֣וּם ׀

wā·’ā·qūm

And I arose

､ לַ֗יְלָה

lay·lāh,

in the night ､

אֲנִי֮

’ă·nî

I

וַאֲנָשִׁ֣ים ׀

wa·’ă·nā·šîm

and men

מְעַט֮

mə·‘aṭ

עִמִּי֒

‘im·mî

with me

וְלֹא־

wə·lō-

and no

הִגַּ֣דְתִּי

hig·gaḏ·tî

לְאָדָ֔ם

lə·’ā·ḏām,

מָ֗ה

māh,

אֱלֹהַי֙

’ĕ·lō·hay

my God

נֹתֵ֣ן

nō·ṯên

אֶל־

’el-

in

לִבִּ֔י

lib·bî,

לַעֲשׂ֖וֹת

la·‘ă·śō·wṯ

to do

– לִירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם

lî·rū·šā·lim;

at Jerusalem –

וּבְהֵמָה֙

ū·ḇə·hê·māh

אֵ֣ין

’ên

עִמִּ֔י

‘im·mî,

with me

כִּ֚י

kî

אִם־

’im-

הַבְּהֵמָ֔ה

hab·bə·hê·māh,

the one

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

אֲנִ֖י

’ă·nî

I

רֹכֵ֥ב

rō·ḵêḇ

. בָּֽהּ׃

bāh.

on .

וָאֵצְאָ֨ה

wā·’ê·ṣə·’āh

And I went out

בְשַֽׁעַר־

ḇə·ša·‘ar-

､ הַגַּ֜יא

hag·gay

the Valley ､

לַ֗יְלָה

lay·lāh,

וְאֶל־

wə·’el-

and

פְּנֵי֙

pə·nê

to

､ עֵ֣ין

‘ên

the Serpent Well ､

הַתַּנִּ֔ין

hat·tan·nîn,

וְאֶל־

wə·’el-

and

､ שַׁ֖עַר

ša·‘ar

Gate ､

הָאַשְׁפֹּ֑ת

hā·’aš·pōṯ;

וָאֱהִ֨י

wā·’ĕ·hî

and

שֹׂבֵ֜ר

śō·ḇêr

בְּחוֹמֹ֤ת

bə·ḥō·w·mōṯ

､ יְרוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙

yə·rū·šā·lim

of Jerusalem ､

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

[המפרוצים]

ham·p̄ō·r·wā·ṣîm

-

(הֵ֣ם ׀)

hêm

､ (פְּרוּצִ֔ים)

pə·rū·ṣîm,

broken down ､

וּשְׁעָרֶ֖יהָ

ū·šə·‘ā·re·hā

אֻכְּל֥וּ

’uk·kə·lū

which were burned

. בָאֵֽשׁ׃

ḇā·’êš.

with fire .

וָאֶֽעֱבֹר֙

wā·’e·‘ĕ·ḇōr

And I went on

אֶל־

’el-

to

שַׁ֣עַר

ša·‘ar

the Gate

､ הָעַ֔יִן

hā·‘a·yin,

וְאֶל־

wə·’el-

and to

､ בְּרֵכַ֖ת

bə·rê·ḵaṯ

Pool ､

הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ

ham·me·leḵ;

of the King

וְאֵין־

wə·’ên-

but [there was] no

מָק֥וֹם

mā·qō·wm

לַבְּהֵמָ֖ה

lab·bə·hê·māh

לַעֲבֹ֥ר

la·‘ă·ḇōr

. תַּחְתָּֽי׃

taḥ·tāy.

under me .

וָאֱהִ֨י

wā·’ĕ·hî

So I

עֹלֶ֤ה

‘ō·leh

､ בַנַּ֙חַל֙

ḇan·na·ḥal

by the valley ､

לַ֔יְלָה

lay·lāh,

in the night

וָאֱהִ֥י

wā·’ĕ·hî

and

שֹׂבֵ֖ר

śō·ḇêr

､ בַּחוֹמָ֑ה

ba·ḥō·w·māh;

the wall ､

､ וָאָשׁ֗וּב

wā·’ā·šūḇ,

then I turned back ､

וָאָב֛וֹא

wā·’ā·ḇō·w

בְּשַׁ֥עַר

bə·ša·‘ar

by the Gate

､ הַגַּ֖יְא

hag·gay

. וָאָשֽׁוּב׃

wā·’ā·šūḇ.

וְהַסְּגָנִ֗ים

wə·has·sə·ḡā·nîm,

And the officials

לֹ֤א

lō

not

יָדְעוּ֙

yā·ḏə·‘ū

אָ֣נָה

’ā·nāh

､ הָלַ֔כְתִּי

hā·laḵ·tî,

I had gone ､

וּמָ֖ה

ū·māh

אֲנִ֣י

’ă·nî

I

– עֹשֶׂ֑ה

‘ō·śeh;

､ וְלַיְּהוּדִ֨ים

wə·lay·yə·hū·ḏîm

and the Jews ､

､ וְלַכֹּהֲנִ֜ים

wə·lak·kō·hă·nîm

and the priests ､

､ וְלַחֹרִ֣ים

wə·la·ḥō·rîm

and the nobles ､

､ וְלַסְּגָנִ֗ים

wə·las·sə·ḡā·nîm,

and the officials ､

וּלְיֶ֙תֶר֙

ū·lə·ye·ṯer

or the others

עֹשֵׂ֣ה

‘ō·śêh

. הַמְּלָאכָ֔ה

ham·mə·lā·ḵāh,

the work .

עַד־

‘aḏ-

כֵּ֖ן

kên

לֹ֥א

lō

not

. הִגַּֽדְתִּי׃

hig·gaḏ·tî.

וָאוֹמַ֣ר

wā·’ō·w·mar

And I said

אֲלֵהֶ֗ם

’ă·lê·hem,

אַתֶּ֤ם

’at·tem

רֹאִים֙

rō·’îm

הָרָעָה֙

hā·rā·‘āh

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

אֲנַ֣חְנוּ

’ă·naḥ·nū

we [are]

בָ֔הּ

ḇāh,

in

אֲשֶׁ֤ר

’ă·šer

יְרוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙

yə·rū·šā·lim

חֲרֵבָ֔ה

ḥă·rê·ḇāh,

וּשְׁעָרֶ֖יהָ

ū·šə·‘ā·re·hā

נִצְּת֣וּ

niṣ·ṣə·ṯū

. בָאֵ֑שׁ

ḇā·’êš;

with fire .

､ לְכ֗וּ

lə·ḵū,

Come ､

וְנִבְנֶה֙

wə·niḇ·neh

and let us build

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

חוֹמַ֣ת

ḥō·w·maṯ

the wall

､ יְרוּשָׁלִַ֔ם

yə·rū·šā·lim,

of Jerusalem ､

וְלֹא־

wə·lō-

נִהְיֶ֥ה

nih·yeh

we may be

ע֖וֹד

‘ō·wḏ

. חֶרְפָּֽה׃

ḥer·pāh.

וָאַגִּ֨יד

wā·’ag·gîḏ

And I told

לָהֶ֜ם

lā·hem

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

יַ֣ד

yaḏ

of the hand

אֱלֹהַ֗י

’ĕ·lō·hay,

of my God

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

הִיא֙

hî

טוֹבָ֣ה

ṭō·w·ḇāh

עָלַ֔י

‘ā·lay,

וְאַף־

wə·’ap̄-

and also

דִּבְרֵ֥י

diḇ·rê

הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ

ham·me·leḵ

of the king

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

אָֽמַר־

’ā·mar-

לִ֑י

lî;

to me

､ וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙

way·yō·mə·rū

so they said ､

נָק֣וּם

nā·qūm

let us rise up

. וּבָנִ֔ינוּ

ū·ḇā·nî·nū,

and build .

וַיְחַזְּק֥וּ

way·ḥaz·zə·qū

יְדֵיהֶ֖ם

yə·ḏê·hem

. לַטּוֹבָֽה׃

laṭ·ṭō·w·ḇāh.

to [this] good [work] .

But when heard [of it]

סַנְבַלַּ֨ט

san·ḇal·laṭ

､ הַחֹרֹנִ֜י

ha·ḥō·rō·nî

the Horonite ､

וְטֹבִיָּ֣ה ׀

wə·ṭō·ḇî·yāh

､ הָעֶ֣בֶד

hā·‘e·ḇeḏ

the official ､

､ הָֽעַמּוֹנִ֗י

hā·‘am·mō·w·nî,

וְגֶ֙שֶׁם֙

wə·ḡe·šem

､ הָֽעַרְבִ֔י

hā·‘ar·ḇî,

the Arab ､

､ וַיַּלְעִ֣גוּ

way·yal·‘i·ḡū

and they laughed ､

לָ֔נוּ

lā·nū,

at us

וַיִּבְז֖וּ

way·yiḇ·zū

עָלֵ֑ינוּ

‘ā·lê·nū;

us

､ וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ

way·yō·mə·rū,

and said ､

מָֽה־

māh-

what [is]

הַדָּבָ֤ר

had·dā·ḇār

הַזֶּה֙

haz·zeh

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

אַתֶּ֣ם

’at·tem

؟ עֹשִׂ֔ים

‘ō·śîm,

הַעַ֥ל

ha·‘al

؟ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ

ham·me·leḵ

the king ؟

אַתֶּ֥ם

’at·tem

. מֹרְדִֽים׃

mō·rə·ḏîm.

וָאָשִׁ֨יב

wā·’ā·šîḇ

אוֹתָ֜ם

’ō·w·ṯām

דָּבָ֗ר

dā·ḇār,

וָאוֹמַ֤ר

wā·’ō·w·mar

and said

לָהֶם֙

lā·hem

אֱלֹהֵ֣י

’ĕ·lō·hê

the God

､ הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם

haš·šā·ma·yim,

of heaven ､

ה֚וּא

hū

He

יַצְלִ֣יחַֽ

yaṣ·lî·aḥ

לָ֔נוּ

lā·nū,

us

וַאֲנַ֥חְנוּ

wa·’ă·naḥ·nū

עֲבָדָ֖יו

‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw

נָק֣וּם

nā·qūm

will arise

､ וּבָנִ֑ינוּ

ū·ḇā·nî·nū;

and build ､

וְלָכֶ֗ם

wə·lā·ḵem,

but you

אֵֽין־

’ên-

､ חֵ֧לֶק

ḥê·leq

､ וּצְדָקָ֛ה

ū·ṣə·ḏā·qāh

or right ､

､ וְזִכָּר֖וֹן

wə·zik·kā·rō·wn

or memorial ､

. בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

bî·rū·šā·lim.
