but while he was revolving this in his mind, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, the off-spring of David, don't make any difficulty of taking Mary for thy wife: for her pregnancy is from the holy Spirit.
Where is this king of the Jews who is now born? for we have seen his rising star, and are come to pay him homage.
when king Herod heard these things, he was alarm'd, and all Jerusalem with him.
and he sent them to Bethlehem, go, said he, make an exact enquiry about the young child, and when ye have found him, let me know it, that I too may come and pay my adorations to him.
and entring into the house, they saw the infant with Mary his mother, and prostrating themselves, they worshipped him: then opening their treasures, they presented him with gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
Then the inhabitants of Jerusalem, of all Judea, and the whole country about Jordan, came to him:
and having confess'd their sins, they were baptized by him in Jordan.
but John opposed him, I have need, said he, to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?
and when Jesus was baptized, he came out of the water: and immediately the heavens seem'd to be parted asunder before him, and he saw the Spirit
of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: at the same time a voice was heard from heaven, saying, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
whereupon the tempter came to him, and said, "If thou be the Son of God, command these stones to become bread."
but Jesus answered him, It is written, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every thing that God shall prescribe."
then the devil took Jesus with him to Jerusalem, and having set him on the wing of the temple, he said to him,
Again, the devil accompanyed him up a very high mountain, and representing to him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them: all these things,
Then said Jesus to him, get thee hence Satan: for it it written, "Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve ."
whereupon the devil left him, and immediately angels came and ministred unto him.
so they immediately left their nets, and followed him.
so that his fame was spread over all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were afflicted with any diseases or pains, demoniacs, lunatics, and paralytics; and he healed them.
and a great multitude of people followed him from Galilee, from Decapolis, from Jerusalem, from Judea, and from about Jordan.
Jesus, to avoid this crowd of people, went to a mountain: and when he was set down, his disciples came to him.
It hath been said, whoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a bill of divorce.
but I say unto you, don't return evil for evil; on the contrary, if any one strike thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other likewise.
and if any man will go to law with you, to have your coat, let him have your cloke too.
and if any one will press you to go a mile with him, go with him the other two.
give to him that asks you, and from him that would borrow of you turn not away.
don't therefore imitate them: for your father knows what you want, before you ask him.
if ye then, as wicked as ye are, know how to bestow proper gifts upon your children; how much more shall your heavenly father give good things to them that ask him?
therefore, whoever heareth these instructions of mine, and puts them in practice, I will compare him to the prudent man, who built his house upon a rock:
When Jesus was come down from the mountain, a great multitude followed him.
and Jesus held out his hand and touched him, saying, I will, be thou clean. and immediately he was cured of his leprosy.
and Jesus said to him, take care not to tell any man, but go thy way, shew thy self to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, that it may be a testimony against them.
he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose and gave him entertainment.
in the evening they brought him several demoniacs: and he cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all that were sick:
Now Jesus perceiving the crowd about him, gave orders to pass over to the other side of the lake.
when a certain scribe came to him, and said, Master, I will follow you where-ever you go.
another of his disciples said to him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
but Jesus said to him, follow me, and let the dead bury their dead.
and his disciples came and awaked him, saying, Lord, save us: we are sinking.
but the crew were all amaz'd; what is this man, said they, that even the winds and the sea obey him?
When he was arrived on the other side, in the country of the Gergesenes, two demoniacs met him starting out of the tombs with such fury, it was not safe for any body to pass that way.
So the devils entreated him, saying, if you force us out, suffer us to retire into the herd of swine.
whereupon the city went in a body to meet Jesus, and when they saw him they desir'd him to withdraw out of their country.
As Jesus left that place, he saw one Matthew by name, sitting at the customhouse: and said to him, follow me. and he rose and followed him.
and while Jesus was at table in Matthew's house, several publicans and loose people happen'd to come in, who sat down with him and his disciples.
Then John's disciples came to him and said, why do the Pharisees, as well as we, observe so many fasts, and your disciples keep none?
Whilst he thus entertain'd them, the ruler of the synagogue came and made his address to him, saying, my daughter is upon the point of death: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live.
When a woman, who had been troubled with an hemorrhage twelve years, came behind him, and touch'd the hem of his garment.
and he said to them, withdraw, for the maid is not dead, but asleep. and they treated him with contemptuous laughter.
As Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying out, son of David, have mercy on us.
fear not those who can only kill the body, but cannot hurt the soul: rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.
Whosoever therefore shall own me before men, him will I own likewise before my father who is in heaven.
but whosoever shall renounce me before men, him will I also renounce before my father who is in heaven.
He that receives you, receives me; and he that receives me, receives him that sent me.
and whoever shall give only a cup of cold water to the meanest of you, considering him as my disciple, shall most assuredly be far from losing his reward.
in the mean time John having heard in his confinement of the actions of Christ, he sent two of his disciples to ask him,
my father has instructed me in every thing: and no one knoweth the son, except the father: nor does any one know the father, except the son, and he to whom the son is pleased to reveal him."
the Pharisees seeing that, said to him, see, your disciples are doing what is unlawful to do on the sabbath-day.
how he entred into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which it was not lawful either for him or his company to eat, but only for the priests?
where they brought a man with a withered hand: and asked him this insnaring question, is it lawful to heal on the sabbath-day?
"behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew justice to the nations.
Then they brought to him a demoniac, who was both blind and dumb: and he cured him so effectually, that he recovered both his speech and his sight;
besides, how could any one enter into the house of a man of might to rob him of his goods, except he first master the strong man? and then indeed he might plunder his house.
shall not be forgiven them. and if any one speaks against the son of man, it may be forgiven him: but if any one speaks against the holy spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this age, nor in that to come.
Now while he was talking to the people, his mother and his brothers stood without, desiring to speak with him.
then some body said to him, your mother and your brothers are without, and desire to speak with you.
but Jesus answered the man that told him, who is my mother? and who are my brothers?
and there was so great a croud of people got about him, that he was oblig'd to go into a bark, where he sat, while the people all stood on the shore.
And the disciples came, and said to him, why do you speak to them in parables?
for to him that uses what he has, shall be given, and he shall have abundantly: but from him that uses it not, shall be taken away, even what he hath.
but having no root in him he has only an occasional faith: for as soon as any oppression or persecution arises upon account of the gospel, he presently relapses.
Then Jesus leaving the multitude, went into the house: and his disciples coming to him, said, explain to us the parable of the tares of the field.
then shall the just shine out like the sun, in the kingdom of their father. he that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
and they were scandaliz'd at him. but Jesus said to them, a prophet is not without honour, except in his own country and in his own family.
for Herod having secur'd John, bound him, and put him in prison to please Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.
for John had said to him, it is not lawful for thee to have her.
he would have put him to death, but for fear of the people, who reckoned him a prophet.
and the king relented: nevertheless out of regard to the oath, and to those who sat with him at table, he commanded it to be brought to her.
When Jesus heard that, he embark'd, to retire privately to a desert place: of which the people being inform'd, they followed him on foot out of the cities.
At evening his disciples came to him, saying, this is a desert place, and dinner-time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go to buy themselves provisions in the villages.
Presently after Jesus obliged his disciples to embark, and cross over to the other side before him, whilst he dismiss'd the people.
the disciples seeing him walking on the sea, cry'd out in a fright, an apparition; and they scream'd for fear.
immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, and caught him, diffident man, said he, why were you in suspence?
then they that were in the ship, came and worshipped him, saying, of a truth thou art the son of God.
where being known by the people of that place, they sent about all that country, and presented to him all that were diseased,
praying him to let them only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touch'd it were made perfectly whole.
for this is a commandment of God, "honour thy father and mother; and, he that curses father or mother, let him be punish'd with death."
and there came a woman of Canaan from those quarters, and cried out to him, have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously tormented by a demon.
