Israel To Destroy Idolatrous Nations

1 (A)When the Lord your God brings you into the land where you are entering to possess it, and clears away many nations before you, the Hittites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, (B)seven nations greater and stronger than you,

1 When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou;

1 “When the Lord your God brings you into the land(A) you are entering to possess,(B) and He drives out many nations before you—the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites, seven nations more numerous and powerful than you—

1 "When the LORD your God brings you into the land that you are entering to possess, he will drive out many nations before you: the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, seven nations who are more numerous and stronger than you.

1 “When the Lord your God brings you into the land which you are entering to possess, and has cleared away many nations before you, the Hittite and the Girgashite and the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite, seven nations greater and mightier than you,

2 and when the Lord your God delivers them before you and you (a)defeat them, (C)then you shall (b)utterly destroy them. (D)You shall make no covenant with them (E)and show no favor to them.

2 And when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them:

2 and when the Lord your God delivers them over to you and you defeat them, you must completely destroy them. Make no treaty with them and show them no mercy.

2 So when the LORD your God delivers them to you and you have defeated them, then utterly destroy them. You are not to make any covenant with them nor be gracious to them.

2 and when the Lord your God gives them over to you and you defeat them, then you shall utterly destroy them. You shall not make a covenant (treaty) with them nor show mercy and compassion to them.

3 Furthermore, (F)you shall not intermarry with them; you shall not give your (c)daughters to (d)their sons, nor shall you take (e)their daughters for your (f)sons.

3 Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son.

3 Do not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons,(C)

3 You are not to intermarry with them. You are not to give your daughters to their sons nor take their daughters for your sons,

3 You shall not intermarry with them; you shall not give your daughter to his son, nor shall you take his daughter for your son;

4 For (g)they will turn your (h)sons away from (i)following Me to serve other gods; then the anger of the Lord will be kindled against you and (G)He will quickly destroy you.

4 For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly.

4 because they will turn your sons away from Me to worship other gods. Then the Lord’s anger will burn against you, and He will swiftly destroy you.

4 because they will turn your children from me to serve other gods so that the LORD's anger blazes against you and swiftly destroys you by fire.

4 for they will turn your sons away from following Me to serve other gods; then the anger of the Lord will be kindled and burn against you and He will quickly destroy you.

5 But thus you shall do to them: (H)you shall tear down their altars, and smash their sacred pillars, and hew down their (j)Asherim, and burn their graven images with fire.

5 But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their graven images with fire.

5 Instead, this is what you are to do to them: tear down their altars, smash their sacred pillars, cut down their Asherah poles,(D) and burn up their carved images.

5 This is what you are to do to them: tear down their altars, break their pillars, cut down their ritual pillars, and burn their carved idols in fire,

5 But this is how you shall deal with them: you shall tear down their altars and smash to pieces their sacred pillars, and cut down their Asherim (symbols of the goddess Asherah), and burn their carved or sculpted images in the fire.

6 For you are (I)a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be (J)a people for His (k)own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the (l)earth.

6 For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.

6 For you are a holy people(E) belonging to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you to be His own possession(F) out of all the peoples on the face of the earth.

6 because you are a holy people to the LORD your God. The LORD your God chose you to be his people, his treasured possession from all the nations on the face of the earth."

6 For you are a holy people [set apart] to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be a people for His own possession [that is, His very special treasure].

The Basis Of Israel's Election

7 (K)The Lord did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any of the peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples,

7 The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people:

7 “The Lord was devoted to you and chose you, not because you were more numerous than all peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples.

7 "It wasn't because you were more numerous than other people of the earth that the LORD committed himself to you and chose you. In fact, you were the least numerous of all the nations.

7 “The Lord did not love you and choose you because you were greater in number than any of the other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples.

8 but because the Lord loved you and kept the (L)oath which He swore to your forefathers, (M)the Lord brought you out by a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of (m)slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

8 But because the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

8 But because the Lord loved(G) you and kept the oath He swore to your fathers, He brought you out with a strong hand and redeemed(H) you from the place of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

8 But the LORD loved you and kept his oath that he made to your ancestors. The LORD brought you out with great power from slavery, from the control of Pharaoh, king of Egypt.

8 But because the Lord loves you and is keeping the oath which He swore to your fathers, the Lord has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed (bought) you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

9 Know therefore that the Lord your God, (N)He is God, (O)the faithful God, (P)who keeps (n)His covenant and (o)His lovingkindness to a thousandth generation with those who (Q)love Him and keep His commandments;

9 Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;

9 Know that Yahweh your God is God, the faithful God who keeps His gracious covenant loyalty for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commands.(I)

9 Know that the LORD your God is God, the trusted God who faithfully keeps his covenant to the thousandth generation of those who love him and obey his commands.

9 Therefore know [without any doubt] and understand that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God, who is keeping His covenant and His [steadfast] lovingkindness to a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments;

10 but (R)repays those who hate Him to (p)their faces, to destroy (q)them; He will not delay (r)with him who hates Him, He will repay him to his face.

10 And repayeth them that hate him to their face, to destroy them: he will not be slack to him that hateth him, he will repay him to his face.

10 But He directly pays back(a) and destroys those who hate Him.(J) He will not hesitate to directly pay back(b) the one who hates Him.

10 But for the one who hates him, he will repay him by destroying him. He will not delay dealing with someone who hates him.

10 but repays those who hate Him to their faces, by destroying them; He will not hesitate with him who hates Him, He will repay him to his face.

11 Therefore, you shall keep the commandment and the statutes and the judgments which I am commanding you today, to do them.

11 Thou shalt therefore keep the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, which I command thee this day, to do them.

11 So keep the command—the statutes and ordinances—that I am giving you to follow today.

11 Therefore keep the commands, decrees, and the ordinances that I am instructing you to obey today."

11 Therefore, you shall keep (follow, obey) the commandment and the statutes and judgments (precepts) which I am commanding you today.

Promises Of Good For Covenant Obedience

12 (S)Then it shall come about, because you listen to these judgments and keep and do them, that the Lord your God will keep with you (s)His covenant and (t)His lovingkindness which He swore to your forefathers.

12 Wherefore it shall come to pass, if ye hearken to these judgments, and keep, and do them, that the LORD thy God shall keep unto thee the covenant and the mercy which he sware unto thy fathers:

12 “If you listen to and are careful to keep these ordinances, the Lord your God will keep His covenant loyalty with you, as He swore to your fathers.(K)

12 "If you pay attention to these laws and obey them, then the LORD your God will continue his covenant of gracious love with you that he promised with an oath to your ancestors.

12 “Then it shall come about, because you listen to these judgments and keep and do them, that the Lord your God will keep with you the covenant and the [steadfast] lovingkindness which He swore to your fathers.

13 He will (T)love you and bless you and (U)multiply you; He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, your grain and your new wine and your oil, the increase of your herd and the young of your flock, (u)in the land which He swore to your forefathers to give you.

13 And he will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee: he will also bless the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy land, thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep, in the land which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee.

13 He will love you, bless you, and multiply you. He will bless your descendants,(c)(L) and the produce of your land—your grain, new wine, and oil—the young of your herds, and the newborn of your flocks, in the land He swore to your fathers that He would give you.

13 He'll love you and increase your numbers. He'll bless the fruit of your womb, the fruit of your land (the grain, new wine, and oil), the offspring of your herds, and the lambs of your flock, in the land that the LORD promised your ancestors he would give you.

13 He will love you and bless you and multiply you; He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your land, your grain and your new wine and your [olive] oil, the offspring of your cattle and the young of your flock, in the land which He swore to your fathers to give you.

14 You shall be blessed above all peoples; there will be no male or female (V)barren among you or among your cattle.

14 Thou shalt be blessed above all people: there shall not be male or female barren among you, or among your cattle.

14 You will be blessed above all peoples; there will be no infertile male or female among you or your livestock.

14 You'll be blessed among all the nations. There'll be no infertility among you, not even among your herds.

14 You shall be blessed above all peoples; there will be no male or female barren (childless, infertile) among you or among your cattle.

15 (W)The Lord will remove from you all sickness; and He will not put on you any of the harmful diseases of Egypt which you have known, but He will lay them on all who hate you.

15 And the LORD will take away from thee all sickness, and will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou knowest, upon thee; but will lay them upon all them that hate thee.

15 The Lord will remove all sickness from you; He will not put on you(M) all the terrible diseases of Egypt that you know about, but He will inflict them on all who hate you.

15 The LORD will turn aside every disease from you. He won't inflict on you the terrible diseases you knew in Egypt, but will inflict them instead on all who hate you.

15 The Lord will take away from you all sickness; and He will not subject you to any of the harmful diseases of Egypt which you have known, but He will impose them on all [those] who hate you.

Exhortation To Destroy Canaanite Paganism

16 You shall consume all the peoples whom the Lord your God will deliver to you; (X)your eye shall not pity them, nor shall you serve their gods, for that would be (Y)a snare to you.

16 And thou shalt consume all the people which the LORD thy God shall deliver thee; thine eye shall have no pity upon them: neither shalt thou serve their gods; for that will be a snare unto thee.

16 You must destroy all the peoples the Lord your God is delivering over to you and not look on them with pity. Do not worship their gods, for that will be a snare to you.

16 You are to utterly destroy everyone whom the LORD your God will deliver to you. Don't have pity on them nor serve their gods. Otherwise, they will become a snare for you."

16 And you shall consume all the peoples whom the Lord your God will give over to you; your eye shall not pity them, nor shall you serve their gods, for that would be a [deadly] trap to you.

17 “If you should say in your heart, ‘These nations are greater than I; how can I (Z)dispossess them?’

17 If thou shalt say in thine heart, These nations are more than I; how can I dispossess them?

17 “If you say to yourself, ‘These nations are greater than I; how can I drive them out?’

17 "You may say to yourselves, "These nations are more numerous than we are. How can we dispossess them?'

17 “If you say in your heart, ‘These nations are greater than I am; how can I dispossess them?’

18 you shall not be afraid of them; you shall well (AA)remember what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt:

18 Thou shalt not be afraid of them: but shalt well remember what the LORD thy God did unto Pharaoh, and unto all Egypt;

18 do not be afraid of them. Be sure to remember what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and all Egypt:

18 But you mustn't fear them. Be sure to remember what the LORD your God did to Pharaoh and all of Egypt.

18 you shall not be afraid of them; you shall remember [with confidence] what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt—

19 (AB)the great trials which your eyes saw and the signs and the wonders and the mighty hand and the outstretched arm by which the Lord your God brought you out. So shall the Lord your God do to all the peoples of whom you are afraid.

19 The great temptations which thine eyes saw, and the signs, and the wonders, and the mighty hand, and the stretched out arm, whereby the LORD thy God brought thee out: so shall the LORD thy God do unto all the people of whom thou art afraid.

19 the great trials that you saw, the signs and wonders, the strong hand and outstretched arm, by which the Lord your God brought you out. The Lord your God will do the same to all the peoples you fear.

19 Your eyes saw the great trials, the signs and wonders, and the awesome power with which the LORD your God brought you out. The LORD your God will do the same to all the people whom you fear.

19 the great trials which you saw with your own eyes, and the signs, the wonders, the mighty hand and the outstretched arm by which the Lord your God brought you out. So shall the Lord your God do to all the peoples of whom you are afraid.

20 Moreover, the Lord your God will send (AC)the hornet against them, until those who are left and hide themselves from you perish.

20 Moreover the LORD thy God will send the hornet among them, until they that are left, and hide themselves from thee, be destroyed.

20 The Lord your God will also send the hornet against them until all the survivors and those hiding from you perish.(N)

20 He'll send plagues against them until the survivors who hide from you have perished.

20 Moreover, the Lord your God will send the hornet (His terror) against them, until those who are left and hide themselves from you perish.

21 You shall not dread (v)them, for (AD)the Lord your God is in your midst, (AE)a great and awesome God.

21 Thou shalt not be affrighted at them: for the LORD thy God is among you, a mighty God and terrible.

21 Don’t be terrified of them, for the Lord your God, a great and awesome God, is among you.

21 Don't tremble before them, because the LORD your God, who is among you, is a great and awesome God.

21 You shall not dread them, for the Lord your God is in your midst, a great and awesome God.

22 (AF)The Lord your God will clear away these nations before you little by little; you will not be able to put an end to them quickly, for the (w)wild beasts would grow too numerous for you.

22 And the LORD thy God will put out those nations before thee by little and little: thou mayest not consume them at once, lest the beasts of the field increase upon thee.

22 The Lord your God will drive out these nations before you little by little. You will not be able to destroy them all at once; otherwise, the wild animals will become too numerous for you.(O)

22 He slowly will dislodge these nations before you, but he won't destroy them quickly, so the wild animals won't multiply around you.

22 The Lord your God will clear away these nations before you little by little; you will not be able to put an end to them quickly, for [if you did] the (a)wild animals would become too numerous for you.

23 (AG)But the Lord your God will deliver them before you, and will (x)throw them into great confusion until they are destroyed.

23 But the LORD thy God shall deliver them unto thee, and shall destroy them with a mighty destruction, until they be destroyed.

23 The Lord your God will give them over to you and throw them into great confusion until they are destroyed.

23 But the LORD your God will deliver them over to you, throwing them into great confusion, until they are destroyed.

23 But the Lord your God will hand them over to you, and will confuse them with a great panic until they are destroyed.

24 (AH)He will deliver their kings into your hand so that you will make their name perish from under heaven; (AI)no man will be able to stand before you until you have destroyed them.

24 And he shall deliver their kings into thine hand, and thou shalt destroy their name from under heaven: there shall no man be able to stand before thee, until thou have destroyed them.

24 He will hand their kings over to you, and you will wipe out their names under heaven. No one will be able to stand against you; you will annihilate them.

24 He will deliver kings into your control, and you are to wipe out the memory of them from under heaven. No one will be able to stand before you. You are to utterly destroy them.

24 And He will hand over their kings to you, and you will make their name perish from under heaven; no man will be able to stand before you until you have destroyed them.

25 The graven images of their gods you are to (AJ)burn with fire; you shall (AK)not covet the silver or the gold that is on them, nor take it for yourselves, or you will be (AL)snared by it, for it is an (AM)abomination to the Lord your God.

25 The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be snared therein: for it is an abomination to the LORD thy God.

25 You must burn up the carved images of their gods. Don’t covet the silver and gold on the images and take it for yourself, or else you will be ensnared by it, for it is abhorrent to the Lord your God.

25 Burn the images of their gods in the fire. Desire neither the silver nor the gold that adorns them, nor take them for yourselves, so you won't be ensnared by them, because the gold and silver is detestable to the LORD your God.

25 You shall burn the carved and sculpted images of their gods in the fire. You shall not covet the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it for yourselves, so that you will not be ensnared by it [in a deadly trap], for it is an abomination (repulsive) to the Lord your God.

26 You shall not bring an abomination into your house, and like it come under the (AN)ban; you shall utterly detest it and you shall utterly abhor it, for it is something banned.

26 Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing.

26 You must not bring any abhorrent thing into your house, or you will be set apart for destruction like it. You are to utterly detest and abhor it, because it is set apart for destruction.

26 Don't bring any detestable thing to your house, because you yourself will be utterly destroyed along with these detestable things. You must absolutely abhor and detest all of it, because it has been devoted to destruction."

26 You shall not bring an abomination (idol) into your house, and like it come under the ban (doomed to destruction); you shall utterly detest and you shall utterly hate it, for it is something banned.
