Now there was a famine in the land; so Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was severe in the land.

God said to Abram, “Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, where they will be enslaved and oppressed four hundred years.

You shall answer and say before the Lord your God, ‘My father was a wandering Aramean, and he went down to Egypt and sojourned there, few in number; but there he became a great, mighty and populous nation.

Israel also came into Egypt;

Thus Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.

For thus says the Lord God, “My people went down at the first into Egypt to reside there; then the Assyrian oppressed them without cause.

But God spoke to this effect, that his descendants would be aliens in a foreign land, and that they would

be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years.

For the famine

Now the famine was severe in the land.

“Now a famine came over all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction with it, and our fathers could find no food.

Let thy

you shall say, ‘Your servants have been

keepers of livestock from our youth even until now, both we and our fathers,’ that you may live in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is

loathsome to the Egyptians.”
