Human Traditions And God's Commandments

1 Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying,

1 (A)Then some Pharisees and scribes *came to Jesus (B)from Jerusalem and said,

1 Then(A) Pharisees and scribes came from Jerusalem to Jesus and asked,(B)

1 Then some Pharisees and scribes came from Jerusalem to Jesus and asked,

1 Then some Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem came to Jesus and said,

2 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.

2 “Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they (C)do not wash their hands when they eat bread.”

2 “Why do Your disciples(C) break the tradition of the elders? For they don’t wash their hands when they eat!”(a)(D)

2 "Why do your disciples disregard the tradition of the elders? They don't wash their hands when they eat."

2 “Why do Your disciples violate the (a)tradition (religious laws) handed down by the [Jewish] elders? For Your disciples do not [ceremonially] wash their hands before they eat.”

3 But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?

3 And He answered and said to them, “Why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?

3 He answered them, “And why do you break God’s commandment because of your tradition?

3 But he answered them, "Why do you also disregard the commandment of God because of your tradition?

3 He replied to them, “Why also do you violate the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition [handed down by the elders]?

4 For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.

4 For God said, ‘(D)Honor your father and mother,’ and, ‘(E)He who speaks evil of father or mother is to (a)be put to death.’

4 For God said:(b)Honor your father and your mother;(E)(c) and,The one who speaks evil of father or mothermust be put to death.(F)(d)

4 Because God said, "You are to honor your father and your mother,' and, "Whoever curses father or mother must certainly be put to death.'

4 For God said [through Moses], Honor your father and mother,’ and, ‘He who speaks evil of or insults or treats improperly father or mother is to be put to death.’(A)

5 But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;

5 But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever I have that would help you has been (b)given to God,”

5 But you say, ‘Whoever tells his father or mother, “Whatever benefit you might have received from me is a gift committed to the temple”—

5 But you say, "Whoever tells his father or his mother, "Whatever support you might have received from me has been given to God,"

5 But you say, ‘If anyone says to his father or mother, “Whatever [money or resource that] I have that would help you is [already dedicated and] given to God,”

6 And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.

6 he is not to honor his father or his mother(c).’ And by this you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition.

6 he does not have to honor his father.’(e) In this way, you have revoked God’s word(f) because of your tradition.

6 does not have to honor his father.' Because of your tradition, then, you have disregarded the authority of God's word.

6 he is not to honor his father or his mother [by helping them with their need].’ So by this you have invalidated the word of God [depriving it of force and authority and making it of no effect] for the sake of your tradition [handed down by the elders].

7 Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,

7 You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you:

7 Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said:

7 You hypocrites! How well did Isaiah prophesy of you when he said,

7 You hypocrites (play-actors, pretenders), rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you when he said,

8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.

8 (F)This people honors Me with their lips,But their heart is far away from Me.

8 These people(g) honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me.

8 "These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.

8 This people honors Me with their lips,But their heart is far away from Me.

9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

9 But in vain do they worship Me,Teaching as (G)doctrines the precepts of men.’”

9 They worship Me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commands of men.(G)(h)

9 Their worship of me is empty, because they teach human rules as doctrines.'"

9 But in vain do they worship Me,For they teach as doctrines the precepts of men.’”(B)

Defilement From Within

10 And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:

10 After Jesus called the crowd to Him, He said to them, “Hear and understand.

10 Summoning the crowd, He told them, “Listen and understand:

10 Then calling out to the crowd, he addressed them, "Listen and understand!

10 After Jesus called the crowd to Him, He said, “Listen and understand this:

11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.

11 (H)It is not what enters into the mouth that defiles the man, but what proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man.”

11 It’s not what goes into the mouth that defiles(H) a man, but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.”(I)

11 It is not what goes into the mouth that makes a person unclean. It is what comes out of the mouth that makes a person unclean."

11 It is not what goes into the mouth of a man that defiles and dishonors him, but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles and dishonors him.”

12 Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying?

12 Then the disciples *came and *said to Him, “Do You know that the Pharisees were (d)offended when they heard this statement?”

12 Then the disciples came up and told Him, “Do You know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard this statement?”

12 Then the disciples came and asked him, "Do you realize that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this statement?"

12 Then the disciples came and said to Jesus, “Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard you say this?”

13 But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.

13 But He answered and said, (I)Every plant which My heavenly Father did not plant shall be uprooted.

13 He replied, “Every plant that My heavenly Father didn’t plant will be uprooted.(J)

13 He replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father did not plant will be pulled up by the roots.

13 He answered, “Every plant which My heavenly Father did not plant will be torn up by the roots.(C)

14 Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.

14 Let them alone; (J)they are blind guides (e)of the blind. And (K)if a blind man guides a blind man, both will fall into a pit.”

14 Leave them alone! They are blind guides.(i) And if the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit.”(K)

14 Leave them alone. They are blind guides of the blind. If one blind person leads another blind person, both will fall into a ditch."

14 Leave them alone; they are blind guides (b)[leading blind followers]. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.”

15 Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare unto us this parable.

15 Peter (f)said to Him, “(L)Explain the parable to us.”

15 Then Peter replied to Him, “Explain this parable to us.”(L)

15 Then Peter told him, "Explain to us this parable."

15 Peter asked Him, “Explain this parable [about what defiles a person] to us.”

16 And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding?

16 (g)Jesus said, “Are you still lacking in understanding also?

16 “Are even you still lacking in understanding?” He(j) asked.

16 Jesus said, "Are you still so ignorant?

16 And He said, “Are you still so dull [and unable to put things together]?

17 Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?

17 Do you not understand that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and is (h)eliminated?

17 “Don’t you realize(k) that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is eliminated?(l)

17 Don't you know that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and then is expelled as waste?

17 Do you not understand that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and is eliminated?

18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.

18 But (M)the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man.

18 But what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this defiles a man.(M)

18 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and it is those things that make a person unclean.

18 But whatever [word] comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this is what defiles and dishonors the man.

19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

19 (N)For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, (i)fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders.

19 For from the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false testimonies,(N) blasphemies.(O)

19 It is out of the heart that evil thoughts come, as well as murder, adultery, sexual immorality, stealing, false testimony, and slander.

19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts and plans, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false testimonies, slanders (verbal abuse, irreverent speech, blaspheming).

20 These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.

20 These are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the man.”

20 These are the things that defile a man, but eating with unwashed hands does not defile a man.”(P)

20 These are the things that make a person unclean. But eating with unwashed hands doesn't make a person unclean."

20 These are the things which defile and dishonor the man; but eating with [ceremonially] unwashed hands does not defile the man.”

A Canaanite Woman's Great Faith

21 Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.

21 (O)Jesus went away from there, and withdrew into the district of (P)Tyre and (Q)Sidon.

21 When Jesus left there,(Q) He withdrew to the area of Tyre and Sidon.(R)

21 Then Jesus left that place and went to the region of Tyre and Sidon.

21 After leaving there, Jesus withdrew to the district of (c)Tyre and Sidon.(D)

22 And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.

22 And a Canaanite woman from that region came out and began to cry out, saying, “Have mercy on me, Lord, (R)Son of David; my daughter is cruelly (S)demon-possessed.”

22 Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came and kept crying out,(m) “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is cruelly tormented by a demon.”(S)

22 Suddenly, a Canaanite woman from that territory came near and began to shout, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed!"

22 And a (d)Canaanite woman from that district came out and began to cry out [urgently], saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David (Messiah); my daughter is cruelly possessed by a demon.”

23 But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.

23 But He did not answer her a word. And His disciples came and implored Him, saying, “Send her away, because she keeps shouting (j)at us.”

23 Yet He did not say a word to her. So His disciples(T) approached Him and urged Him, “Send her away because she cries out after us.”(n)

23 But he didn't answer her at all. Then his disciples came up and kept urging him, "Send her away, because she keeps on screaming as she follows us."

23 But He did not say a word in answer to her. And His disciples came and asked Him [repeatedly], “Send her away, because she keeps shouting out after us.”

24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

24 But He answered and said, “I was sent only to (T)the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

24 He replied, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”(U)

24 But he replied, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the nation of Israel."

24 He answered, “I was commissioned by God and sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

25 Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.

25 But she came and (U)began (k)to bow down before Him, saying, “Lord, help me!”

25 But she came, knelt before Him, and said, “Lord, help me!”

25 Then she came and fell down before him, saying, "Lord, help me!"

25 But she came and began to kneel down before Him, saying, “Lord, help me!”

26 But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs.

26 And He answered and said, “It is not (l)good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”

26 He answered, “It isn’t right to take the children’s bread and throw it to their dogs.”(V)

26 He replied, "It's not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the puppies."

26 And He replied, “It is not good (appropriate, fair) to take the (e)children’s bread and throw it to the (f)pet dogs.”

27 And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table.

27 But she said, “Yes, Lord; (m)but even the dogs feed on the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.”

27 “Yes, Lord,” she said, “yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table!”

27 She said, "Yes, Lord. But even the puppies eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' tables."

27 She said, “Yes, Lord; but even the pet dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their [young] masters’ table.”

28 Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

28 Then Jesus said to her, “O woman, (V)your faith is great; it shall be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed (n)at once.

28 Then Jesus replied to her, “Woman, your faith is great. Let it be done for you as you want.” And from that moment(o) her daughter was cured.(W)

28 Then Jesus answered her, "Lady, your faith is great! What you want is granted." That very hour her daughter was healed.

28 Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, your faith [your personal trust and confidence in My power] is great; it will be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed from that moment.

Many Others Healed In Galilee

29 And Jesus departed from thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee; and went up into a mountain, and sat down there.

29 (W)Departing from there, Jesus went along by (X)the Sea of Galilee, and having gone up on the mountain, He was sitting there.

29 Moving on from there,(X) Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee.(Y) He went up on a mountain and sat there,

29 Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a hillside and sat down.

29 Jesus went on from there and passed along by [the eastern shore of] the Sea of Galilee. Then He went up on the hillside and was sitting there.

30 And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet; and he healed them:

30 And (o)large crowds came to Him, bringing with them those who were lame, crippled, blind, mute, and many others, and they laid them down at His feet; and (Y)He healed them.

30 and large crowds came to Him, having with them the lame, the blind, the deformed, those unable to speak, and many others. They put them at His feet, and He healed them.

30 Large crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, those unable to talk, and many others. They placed them at his feet, and he healed them.

30 And great crowds came to Him, bringing with them the lame, crippled, blind, mute, and many others, and they put them down at His feet; and He healed them.

31 Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel.

31 So the crowd marveled as they saw the mute speaking, the crippled (p)restored, and the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they (Z)glorified the God of Israel.

31 So the crowd was amazed when they saw those unable to speak talking, the deformed restored, the lame walking, and the blind seeing.(Z) And they gave glory to the God of Israel.

31 As a result, the crowd was amazed to see those who were unable to talk speaking, the crippled healed, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. So they praised the God of Israel.

31 So the crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled restored, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they praised and glorified the God of Israel.

The Feeding Of Four Thousand

32 Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.

32 (AA)And Jesus called His disciples to Him, and said, (AB)I feel compassion for the (q)people, because they (r)have remained with Me now three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way.”

32 Now Jesus summoned His disciples and said,(AA) “I have compassion on the crowd, because they’ve already stayed with Me three days and have nothing to eat. I don’t want to send them away hungry; otherwise they might collapse on the way.”

32 Then Jesus called his disciples and said, "I have compassion for the crowd because they have already been with me for three days and have nothing to eat. I don't want to send them away without food, or they may faint on the road."

32 Then Jesus called His disciples to Him, and said, “I feel compassion for the crowd, because they have been with Me now three days and have nothing [left] to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, because they might faint [from exhaustion] on the way [home].”(E)

33 And his disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude?

33 The disciples *said to Him, “Where would we get so many loaves in this desolate place to satisfy such a large crowd?”

33 The disciples said to Him, “Where could we get enough bread in this desolate place(AB) to fill such a crowd?”

33 The disciples asked him, "Where in the wilderness are we to get enough bread to feed such a crowd?"

33 The disciples said to Him, “Where are we to get enough bread in this isolated place to feed so large a crowd?”

34 And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes.

34 And Jesus *said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven, and a few small fish.”

34 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked them.“Seven,” they said, “and a few small fish.”

34 Jesus asked them, "How many loaves of bread do you have?" They said, "Seven, and a few small fish."

34 And Jesus asked them, “How many loaves [of bread] do you have?” They replied, “Seven, and a few small fish.”

35 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground.

35 And He directed the (s)people to (t)sit down on the ground;

35 After commanding the crowd to sit down on the ground,

35 Ordering the crowd to sit down on the ground,

35 He directed the crowd to sit down on the ground,

36 And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.

36 and He took the seven loaves and the fish; and (AC)giving thanks, He broke them and started giving them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.

36 He took the seven loaves and the fish, and He gave thanks, broke them, and kept on giving them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.(AC)

36 he took the seven loaves and the fish and gave thanks. Then he broke them in pieces and kept giving them to his disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.

36 and He took the seven loaves and the fish; and when He had given thanks, He broke them and started giving them to the disciples, and the disciples [gave them] to the people.

37 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full.

37 And they all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, seven large (AD)baskets full.

37 They all ate and were filled. Then they collected the leftover pieces—seven large baskets full.

37 All of them ate until they were filled, then the disciples picked up what was left of the broken pieces seven baskets full.

37 And they all ate and were satisfied, and they gathered up seven full baskets of the broken pieces that were left over.

38 And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children.

38 And those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.

38 Now those who ate were 4,000 men, besides women and children.

38 Now those who had eaten were four thousand men, besides women and children.

38 [Among] those who ate were 4,000 men, not counting women and children.

39 And he sent away the multitude, and took ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala.

39 And sending away the crowds, Jesus got into (AE)the boat and came to the region of (AF)Magadan.

39 After dismissing the crowds, He got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan.(p)(AD)

39 After he sent the crowds away, he got into a boat and went to the region of Magadan.

39 Then Jesus sent the crowds away, got into the boat and went to the district of (g)Magadan.
