1 Now when (A)the wall was rebuilt and I had set up the doors, and the gatekeepers and the singers and the Levites were appointed,
1 Now it came to pass, when the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and the porters and the singers and the Levites were appointed,
1 When the wall had been rebuilt and I had the doors installed,(A) the gatekeepers,(B) singers, and Levites were appointed.
1 After the wall had been completed and its doors installed, then the gatekeepers, singers, and descendants of Levi were appointed.
1 Now when the wall had been rebuilt and I had set up the doors, and the gatekeepers, singers, and Levites had been appointed,
2 then I put (B)Hanani my brother, and (C)Hananiah the commander of (D)the fortress, in charge of Jerusalem, for he was (E)a faithful man and feared God more than many.
2 That I gave my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the ruler of the palace, charge over Jerusalem: for he was a faithful man, and feared God above many.
2 Then I put my brother Hanani(C) in charge of Jerusalem,(D) along with Hananiah,(E) commander of the fortress,(F) because he was a faithful man who feared God(G) more than most.
2 I appointed my brother Hanani and fortress commander Hananiah to be over Jerusalem, since he was a faithful person who revered God more than many others did.
2 I put my brother Hanani, with Hananiah the commander of the fortress, in charge of Jerusalem, for Hananiah was a more faithful and God-fearing man than many [of the others].
3 Then I said to them, “Do not let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot, and while they are standing guard, let them shut and bolt the doors. Also appoint guards from the inhabitants of Jerusalem, each at his post, and each in front of his own house.”
3 And I said unto them, Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun be hot; and while they stand by, let them shut the doors, and bar them: and appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, every one in his watch, and every one to be over against his house.
3 I said to them, “Do not open the gates of Jerusalem until the sun is hot, and let the doors be shut and securely fastened while the guards are on duty. Station the citizens of Jerusalem as guards, some at their posts and some at their homes.”(H)
3 I charged them, "Do not open the gates of Jerusalem until mid-day. Until then, let everyone stand watch, keeping the gates shut and locked. Appoint security watches from those who live in Jerusalem. Everyone should maintain his own watch near his house."
4 Now the city was large and spacious, but the people in it were few and the houses were not built.
4 Now the city was large and great: but the people were few therein, and the houses were not builded.
4 The city was large and spacious, but there were few people in it, and no houses had been built yet.(I)
4 Even though the city was large and spread out, not many people were living there and not many houses had been built.
4 Now the city was spacious and large, but there were few people in it and the houses had not [yet] been built.
5 (F)Then my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials and the people to be enrolled by genealogies. Then I found the book of the genealogy of those who came up first (a)in which I found the following record:
