1 {A Song of degrees of David.} If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say;

1 A Song of Ascents, of David.(A)Had it not been the Lord who was on our side,”(B)Let Israel now say,

1 A Davidic song of ascents.If the Lord had not been on our side—let Israel say—

1 If the LORD had not been on our side let Israel now say

1 “If it had not been the Lord who was on our side,”Let Israel now say,

2 If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us:

2 “Had it not been the Lord who was on our sideWhen men rose up against us,

2 If the Lord had not been on our side(A)when men attacked us,(B)

2 if the LORD had not been on our side, when men came against us,

2 “If it had not been the Lord who was on our sideWhen men rose up against us,

3 Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us:

3 Then they would have (C)swallowed us alive,When their (D)anger was kindled against us;

3 then they would have swallowed us alivein their burning anger against us.(C)

3 then they would have devoured us alive, when their anger burned against us.

3 Then they would have [quickly] swallowed us alive,When their wrath was kindled against us;

4 Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul:

4 Then the waters would have engulfed us;the torrent would have swept over us;

4 Then the flood waters would have overwhelmed us, the torrent would have flooded over us;

5 Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.

7 Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.

7 We have escaped like a bird from the hunter’s net;the net is torn, and we have escaped.(F)
