Vision of Idolatry in the Temple

וַיְהִ֣י ׀

way·hî

And it came to pass

､ בַּשָּׁנָ֣ה

baš·šā·nāh

in year ､

הַשִּׁשִּׁ֗ית

haš·šiš·šîṯ,

בַּשִּׁשִּׁי֙

baš·šiš·šî

in the sixth [month]

בַּחֲמִשָּׁ֣ה

ba·ḥă·miš·šāh

､ לַחֹ֔דֶשׁ

la·ḥō·ḏeš,

of the month ､

אֲנִי֙

’ă·nî

I

יוֹשֵׁ֣ב

yō·wō·šêḇ

as sat

､ בְּבֵיתִ֔י

bə·ḇê·ṯî,

in my house ､

וְזִקְנֵ֥י

wə·ziq·nê

and with the elders

יְהוּדָ֖ה

yə·hū·ḏāh

יוֹשְׁבִ֣ים

yō·wō·šə·ḇîm

לְפָנָ֑י

lə·p̄ā·nāy;

וַתִּפֹּ֤ל

wat·tip·pōl

עָלַי֙

‘ā·lay

שָׁ֔ם

šām,

יַ֖ד

yaḏ

the hand

אֲדֹנָ֥י

’ă·ḏō·nāy

of the Lord

. יְהֹוִֽה׃

Yah·weh.

､ וָאֶרְאֶ֗ה

wā·’er·’eh,

And I looked ､

וְהִנֵּ֤ה

wə·hin·nêh

דְמוּת֙

ḏə·mūṯ

כְּמַרְאֵה־

kə·mar·’êh-

like the appearance of

– אֵ֔שׁ

’êš,

fire –

מִמַּרְאֵ֥ה

mim·mar·’êh

from the appearance

מָתְנָ֛יו

mā·ṯə·nāw

､ וּלְמַ֖טָּה

ū·lə·maṭ·ṭāh

and downward ､

– אֵ֑שׁ

’êš;

fire –

וּמִמָּתְנָ֣יו

ū·mim·mā·ṯə·nāw

and from His waist

､ וּלְמַ֔עְלָה

ū·lə·ma‘·lāh,

and upward ､

כְּמַרְאֵה־

kə·mar·’êh-

like the appearance

､ זֹ֖הַר

zō·har

of brightness ､

כְּעֵ֥ין

kə·‘ên

. הַחַשְׁמַֽלָה׃

ha·ḥaš·ma·lāh.

of amber .

וַיִּשְׁלַח֙

way·yiš·laḥ

And He stretched out

תַּבְנִ֣ית

taḇ·nîṯ

the form

､ יָ֔ד

yāḏ,

of a hand ､

וַיִּקָּחֵ֖נִי

way·yiq·qā·ḥê·nî

and took me

בְּצִיצִ֣ת

bə·ṣî·ṣiṯ

by a lock

– רֹאשִׁ֑י

rō·šî;

of my hair –

וַתִּשָּׂ֣א

wat·tiś·śā

and lifted up

אֹתִ֣י

’ō·ṯî

me

ר֣וּחַ ׀

rū·aḥ

בֵּֽין־

bên-

הָאָ֣רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ

וּבֵ֣ין

ū·ḇên

and

､ הַשָּׁמַ֡יִם

haš·šā·ma·yim

וַתָּבֵא֩

wat·tā·ḇê

אֹתִ֨י

’ō·ṯî

me

､ יְרוּשָׁלְַ֜מָה

yə·rū·šā·lə·māh

to Jerusalem ､

בְּמַרְא֣וֹת

bə·mar·’ō·wṯ

אֱלֹהִ֗ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm,

of God

אֶל־

’el-

to

פֶּ֜תַח

pe·ṯaḥ

the door

שַׁ֤עַר

ša·‘ar

of the gate

הַפְּנִימִית֙

hap·pə·nî·mîṯ

of the inner [court]

הַפּוֹנֶ֣ה

hap·pō·w·neh

– צָפ֔וֹנָה

ṣā·p̄ō·w·nāh,

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

שָׁ֣ם

šām

-

מוֹשַׁ֔ב

mō·wō·šaḇ,

the seat

סֵ֖מֶל

sê·mel

of the image of

､ הַקִּנְאָ֥ה

haq·qin·’āh

. הַמַּקְנֶֽה׃

ham·maq·neh.

which provokes to jealousy .

､ וְהִ֨נֵּה־

wə·hin·nêh-

And behold ､

､ שָׁ֔ם

šām,

[was] there ､

כְּב֖וֹד

kə·ḇō·wḏ

אֱלֹהֵ֣י

’ĕ·lō·hê

of the God

יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל

yiś·rā·’êl;

כַּמַּרְאֶ֕ה

kam·mar·’eh

like the vision

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

רָאִ֖יתִי

rā·’î·ṯî

. בַּבִּקְעָֽה׃

bab·biq·‘āh.

in the plain .

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And He said

אֵלַ֔י

’ê·lay,

to me

בֶּן־

ben-

､ אָדָ֕ם

’ā·ḏām

of man ､

שָׂא־

śā-

נָ֥א

nā

עֵינֶ֖יךָ

‘ê·ne·ḵā

דֶּ֣רֶךְ

de·reḵ

the way

. צָפ֑וֹנָה

ṣā·p̄ō·w·nāh;

toward the north .

וָאֶשָּׂ֤א

wā·’eś·śā

עֵינַי֙

‘ê·nay

דֶּ֣רֶךְ

de·reḵ

the way

､ צָפ֔וֹנָה

ṣā·p̄ō·w·nāh,

toward the north ､

וְהִנֵּ֤ה

wə·hin·nêh

מִצָּפוֹן֙

miṣ·ṣā·p̄ō·wn

לְשַׁ֣עַר

lə·ša·‘ar

הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ

ham·miz·bê·aḥ,

סֵ֛מֶל

sê·mel

הַקִּנְאָ֥ה

haq·qin·’āh

הַזֶּ֖ה

haz·zeh

. בַּבִּאָֽה׃

bab·bi·’āh.

in the entrance .

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And Furthermore He said

אֵלַ֔י

’ê·lay,

to me

בֶּן־

ben-

､ אָדָ֕ם

’ā·ḏām

of man ､

הֲרֹאֶ֥ה

hă·rō·’eh

do see

אַתָּ֖ה

’at·tāh

[מהם]

mê·hêm

-

(מָ֣ה)

māh

(הֵ֣ם)

hêm

؟ עֹשִׂ֑ים

‘ō·śîm;

תּוֹעֵב֨וֹת

tō·w·‘ê·ḇō·wṯ

the abominations

גְּדֹל֜וֹת

gə·ḏō·lō·wṯ

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

בֵּֽית־

bêṯ-

יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל ׀

yiś·rā·’êl

עֹשִׂ֣ים

‘ō·śîm

､ פֹּ֗ה

pōh,

here ､

לְרָֽחֳקָה֙

lə·rā·ḥo·qāh

to make Me go far away

מֵעַ֣ל

mê·‘al

؟ מִקְדָּשִׁ֔י

miq·dā·šî,

My sanctuary ؟

וְעוֹד֙

wə·‘ō·wḏ

､ תָּשׁ֣וּב

tā·šūḇ

תִּרְאֶ֔ה

tir·’eh,

you will see

תּוֹעֵב֖וֹת

tō·w·‘ê·ḇō·wṯ

. גְּדֹלֽוֹת׃

gə·ḏō·lō·wṯ.

וַיָּבֵ֥א

way·yā·ḇê

אֹתִ֖י

’ō·ṯî

me

אֶל־

’el-

to

פֶּ֣תַח

pe·ṯaḥ

the door

– הֶֽחָצֵ֑ר

he·ḥā·ṣêr;

of the court –

､ וָאֶרְאֶ֕ה

wā·’er·’eh

and when I looked ､

וְהִנֵּ֥ה

wə·hin·nêh

חֹר־

ḥōr-

אֶחָ֖ד

’e·ḥāḏ

a

. בַּקִּֽיר׃

baq·qîr.

in the wall .

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And He said

אֵלַ֔י

’ê·lay,

to me

בֶּן־

ben-

､ אָדָ֖ם

’ā·ḏām

of man ､

חֲתָר־

ḥă·ṯār-

נָ֣א

nā

. בַקִּ֑יר

ḇaq·qîr;

into the wall .

וָאֶחְתֹּ֣ר

wā·’eḥ·tōr

And when I dug

､ בַּקִּ֔יר

baq·qîr,

into the wall ､

וְהִנֵּ֖ה

wə·hin·nêh

פֶּ֥תַח

pe·ṯaḥ

. אֶחָֽד׃

’e·ḥāḏ.

a .

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And He said

אֵלָ֑י

’ê·lāy;

to me

､ בֹּ֤א

bō

go in ､

וּרְאֵה֙

ū·rə·’êh

and see

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הַתּוֹעֵב֣וֹת

hat·tō·w·‘ê·ḇō·wṯ

the abominations

הָרָע֔וֹת

hā·rā·‘ō·wṯ,

אֲשֶׁ֛ר

’ă·šer

הֵ֥ם

hêm

עֹשִׂ֖ים

‘ō·śîm

. פֹּֽה׃

pōh.

וָאָבוֹא֮

wā·’ā·ḇō·w

So I went in

– וָֽאֶרְאֶה֒

wā·’er·’eh

and saw –

וְהִנֵּ֨ה

wə·hin·nêh

כָל־

ḵāl

תַּבְנִ֜ית

taḇ·nîṯ

､ רֶ֤מֶשׂ

re·meś

of creeping thing ､

､ וּבְהֵמָה֙

ū·ḇə·hê·māh

and beasts ､

שֶׁ֔קֶץ

še·qeṣ,

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

and all

גִּלּוּלֵ֖י

gil·lū·lê

בֵּ֣ית

bêṯ

of the house

､ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל

yiś·rā·’êl;

of Israel ､

מְחֻקֶּ֥ה

mə·ḥuq·qeh

עַל־

‘al-

on

הַקִּ֖יר

haq·qîr

סָבִ֥יב ׀

sā·ḇîḇ

. סָבִֽיב׃

sā·ḇîḇ.

וְשִׁבְעִ֣ים

wə·šiḇ·‘îm

אִ֣ישׁ

’îš

מִזִּקְנֵ֣י

miz·ziq·nê

of the elders of

בֵֽית־

ḇêṯ-

､ יִ֠שְׂרָאֵל

yiś·rā·’êl

of Israel ､

וְיַאֲזַנְיָ֨הוּ

wə·ya·’ă·zan·yā·hū

בֶן־

ḇen-

､ שָׁפָ֜ן

šā·p̄ān

of Shaphan ､

עֹמֵ֤ד

‘ō·mêḏ

בְּתוֹכָם֙

bə·ṯō·w·ḵām

עֹמְדִ֣ים

‘ō·mə·ḏîm

לִפְנֵיהֶ֔ם

lip̄·nê·hem,

וְאִ֥ישׁ

wə·’îš

מִקְטַרְתּ֖וֹ

miq·ṭar·tōw

– בְּיָד֑וֹ

bə·yā·ḏōw;

in his hand –

וַעֲתַ֥ר

wa·‘ă·ṯar

עֲנַֽן־

‘ă·nan-

הַקְּטֹ֖רֶת

haq·qə·ṭō·reṯ

. עֹלֶֽה׃

‘ō·leh.

went up .

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And He said

אֵלַי֮

’ê·lay

to me

הֲרָאִ֣יתָ

hă·rā·’î·ṯā

בֶן־

ḇen-

､ אָדָם֒

’ā·ḏām

of man ､

אֲשֶׁ֨ר

’ă·šer

זִקְנֵ֤י

ziq·nê

בֵֽית־

ḇêṯ-

of the house

יִשְׂרָאֵל֙

yiś·rā·’êl

עֹשִׂ֣ים

‘ō·śîm

do

､ בַּחֹ֔שֶׁךְ

ba·ḥō·šeḵ,

in the dark ､

אִ֖ישׁ

’îš

בְּחַדְרֵ֣י

bə·ḥaḏ·rê

in the room

؟ מַשְׂכִּית֑וֹ

maś·kî·ṯōw;

of his idols ؟

כִּ֣י

kî

､ אֹמְרִ֗ים

’ō·mə·rîm,

– אֵ֤ין

’ên

not –

יְהוָה֙

Yah·weh

רֹאֶ֣ה

rō·’eh

אֹתָ֔נוּ

’ō·ṯā·nū,

us

עָזַ֥ב

‘ā·zaḇ

יְהוָ֖ה

Yah·weh

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

. הָאָֽרֶץ׃

hā·’ā·reṣ.

the land .

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And He said

אֵלָ֑י

’ê·lāy;

to me

ע֣וֹד

‘ō·wḏ

תָּשׁ֥וּב

tā·šūḇ

תִּרְאֶ֛ה

tir·’eh

[and] you will see

תּוֹעֵב֥וֹת

tō·w·‘ê·ḇō·wṯ

גְּדֹל֖וֹת

gə·ḏō·lō·wṯ

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

הֵ֥מָּה

hêm·māh

. עֹשִֽׂים׃

‘ō·śîm.

וַיָּבֵ֣א

way·yā·ḇê

אֹתִ֗י

’ō·ṯî,

me

אֶל־

’el-

to

פֶּ֙תַח֙

pe·ṯaḥ

the door

שַׁ֣עַר

ša·‘ar

of the gate

בֵּית־

bêṯ-

of the house

יְהוָ֔ה

Yah·weh,

אֲשֶׁ֖ר

’ă·šer

אֶל־

’el-

– הַצָּפ֑וֹנָה

haṣ·ṣā·p̄ō·w·nāh;

､ וְהִנֵּה־

wə·hin·nêh-

and to my dismay ､

שָׁם֙

šām

הַנָּשִׁ֣ים

han·nā·šîm

יֹֽשְׁב֔וֹת

yō·šə·ḇō·wṯ,

מְבַכּ֖וֹת

mə·ḇak·kō·wṯ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

. הַתַּמּֽוּז׃

hat·tam·mūz.

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And He said

אֵלַ֖י

’ê·lay

to me

הֲרָאִ֣יתָ

hă·rā·’î·ṯā

have you seen [this]

בֶן־

ḇen-

؟ אָדָ֑ם

’ā·ḏām;

of man ؟

ע֣וֹד

‘ō·wḏ

､ תָּשׁ֥וּב

tā·šūḇ

תִּרְאֶ֛ה

tir·’eh

you will see

תּוֹעֵב֥וֹת

tō·w·‘ê·ḇō·wṯ

גְּדֹל֖וֹת

gə·ḏō·lō·wṯ

. מֵאֵֽלֶּה׃

mê·’êl·leh.

וַיָּבֵ֣א

way·yā·ḇê

אֹתִ֗י

’ō·ṯî,

me

אֶל־

’el-

חֲצַ֣ר

ḥă·ṣar

､ בֵּית־

bêṯ-

of the house ､

יְהוָה֮

Yah·weh

הַפְּנִימִית֒

hap·pə·nî·mîṯ

､ וְהִנֵּה־

wə·hin·nêh-

and there ､

פֶ֜תַח

p̄e·ṯaḥ

at the door

הֵיכַ֣ל

hê·ḵal

of the temple

､ יְהוָ֗ה

Yah·weh

of Yahweh ､

בֵּ֤ין

bên

הָֽאוּלָם֙

hā·’ū·lām

וּבֵ֣ין

ū·ḇên

and

､ הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ

ham·miz·bê·aḥ,

the altar [were] ､

כְּעֶשְׂרִ֥ים

kə·‘eś·rîm

וַחֲמִשָּׁ֖ה

wa·ḥă·miš·šāh

and five

､ אִ֑ישׁ

’îš;

men ､

אֲחֹ֨רֵיהֶ֜ם

’ă·ḥō·rê·hem

with their backs

אֶל־

’el-

הֵיכַ֤ל

hê·ḵal

､ יְהוָה֙

Yah·weh

of Yahweh ､

וּפְנֵיהֶ֣ם

ū·p̄ə·nê·hem

and their faces

– קֵ֔דְמָה

qê·ḏə·māh,

toward the east –

וְהֵ֛מָּה

wə·hêm·māh

and they

מִשְׁתַּחֲוִיתֶ֥ם

miš·ta·ḥă·wî·ṯem

were worshiping

קֵ֖דְמָה

qê·ḏə·māh

toward the east

. לַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃

laš·šā·meš.

the sun .

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And He said

אֵלַי֮

’ê·lay

to me

הֲרָאִ֣יתָ

hă·rā·’î·ṯā

have you seen [this]

בֶן־

ḇen-

؟ אָדָם֒

’ā·ḏām

of man ؟

הֲנָקֵל֙

hă·nā·qêl

is it a trivial thing

לְבֵ֣ית

lə·ḇêṯ

to the house

יְהוּדָ֔ה

yə·hū·ḏāh,

מֵעֲשׂ֕וֹת

mê·‘ă·śō·wṯ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הַתּוֹעֵב֖וֹת

hat·tō·w·‘ê·ḇō·wṯ

the abominations

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

עָֽשׂוּ־

‘ā·śū-

؟ פֹ֑ה

p̄ōh;

כִּֽי־

kî-

מָלְא֨וּ

mā·lə·’ū

they have filled

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הָאָ֜רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ

the land

､ חָמָ֗ס

ḥā·mās,

with violence ､

וַיָּשֻׁ֙בוּ֙

way·yā·šu·ḇū

then they have returned

– לְהַכְעִיסֵ֔נִי

lə·haḵ·‘î·sê·nî,

to provoke Me to anger –

וְהִנָּ֛ם

wə·hin·nām

שֹׁלְחִ֥ים

šō·lə·ḥîm

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הַזְּמוֹרָ֖ה

haz·zə·mō·w·rāh

אֶל־

’el-

to

. אַפָּֽם׃

’ap·pām.

וְגַם־

wə·ḡam-

אֲנִי֙

’ă·nî

I will

אֶעֱשֶׂ֣ה

’e·‘ĕ·śeh

. בְחֵמָ֔ה

ḇə·ḥê·māh,

in fury .

לֹֽא־

lō-

Not

､ תָח֥וֹס

ṯā·ḥō·ws

will spare ､

עֵינִ֖י

‘ê·nî

My eye

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

– אֶחְמֹ֑ל

’eḥ·mōl;

will I have pity –

וְקָרְא֤וּ

wə·qā·rə·’ū

and though they cry

בְאָזְנַי֙

ḇə·’ā·zə·nay

in My ears

､ ק֣וֹל

qō·wl

with a voice ､

גָּד֔וֹל

gā·ḏō·wl,

וְלֹ֥א

wə·lō

and not

אֶשְׁמַ֖ע

’eš·ma‘

I will hear

. אוֹתָֽם׃

’ō·w·ṯām.
