The King's Heart is in the Lord's Hand

פַּלְגֵי־

pal·ḡê-

[Like] the rivers

– מַ֣יִם

ma·yim

of water –

לֶב־

leḇ-

the heart [is]

מֶ֭לֶךְ

me·leḵ

בְּיַד־

bə·yaḏ-

in the hand

､ יְהוָ֑ה

Yah·weh;

of Yahweh ､

עַֽל־

‘al-

on

כָּל־

kāl-

אֲשֶׁ֖ר

’ă·šer

יַחְפֹּ֣ץ

yaḥ·pōṣ

. יַטֶּֽנּוּ׃

yaṭ·ṭen·nū.

He turns it .

כָּֽל־

kāl-

דֶּרֶךְ־

de·reḵ-

אִ֭ישׁ

’îš

of a man

יָשָׁ֣ר

yā·šār

and [is] right

､ בְּעֵינָ֑יו

bə·‘ê·nāw;

in his own eyes ､

וְתֹכֵ֖ן

wə·ṯō·ḵên

לִבּ֣וֹת

lib·bō·wṯ

. יְהוָֽה׃

Yah·weh.

עֲ֭שֹׂה

‘ă·śōh

to do

צְדָקָ֣ה

ṣə·ḏā·qāh

וּמִשְׁפָּ֑ט

ū·miš·pāṭ;

נִבְחָ֖ר

niḇ·ḥār

[Is] more acceptable

לַיהוָ֣ה

Yah·weh

. מִזָּֽבַח׃

miz·zā·ḇaḥ.

than sacrifice .

רוּם־

rūm-

､ עֵ֭ינַיִם

‘ê·na·yim

a look ､

וּרְחַב־

ū·rə·ḥaḇ-

､ לֵ֑ב

lêḇ;

a heart ､

נִ֖ר

nir

[And] the plowing

､ רְשָׁעִ֣ים

rə·šā·‘îm

of the wicked ､

. חַטָּֽאת׃

ḥaṭ·ṭāṯ.

מַחְשְׁב֣וֹת

maḥ·šə·ḇō·wṯ

חָ֭רוּץ

ḥā·rūṣ

of the diligent

אַךְ־

’aḵ-

– לְמוֹתָ֑ר

lə·mō·w·ṯār;

to plenty –

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

but [those of] everyone

אָ֝֗ץ

’āṣ,

אַךְ־

’aḵ-

. לְמַחְסֽוֹר׃

lə·maḥ·sō·wr.

פֹּ֣עַל

pō·‘al

א֭וֹצָרוֹת

’ō·w·ṣā·rō·wṯ

בִּלְשׁ֣וֹן

bil·šō·wn

שָׁ֑קֶר

šā·qer;

הֶ֥בֶל

he·ḇel

[Is] the fantasy

נִ֝דָּ֗ף

nid·dāp̄,

מְבַקְשֵׁי־

mə·ḇaq·šê-

of those who seek

. מָֽוֶת׃

mā·weṯ.

שֹׁד־

šōḏ-

רְשָׁעִ֥ים

rə·šā·‘îm

of the wicked

יְגוֹרֵ֑ם

yə·ḡō·w·rêm;

will destroy them

כִּ֥י

kî

מֵ֝אֲנ֗וּ

mê·’ă·nū,

לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת

la·‘ă·śō·wṯ

to do

. מִשְׁפָּֽט׃

miš·pāṭ.

הֲפַכְפַּ֬ךְ

hă·p̄aḵ·paḵ

דֶּ֣רֶךְ

de·reḵ

the way

אִ֣ישׁ

’îš

of a man

– וָזָ֑ר

wā·zār;

､ וְ֝זַ֗ךְ

wə·zaḵ,

but [as for] the pure ､

יָשָׁ֥ר

yā·šār

. פָּעֳלֽוֹ׃

pā·‘o·lōw.

his work [is] .

ט֗וֹב

ṭō·wḇ,

לָשֶׁ֥בֶת

lā·še·ḇeṯ

עַל־

‘al-

in

פִּנַּת־

pin·naṯ-

､ גָּ֑ג

gāḡ;

of a housetop ､

מֵאֵ֥שֶׁת

mê·’ê·šeṯ

Than with a woman

מִ֝דְיָנִ֗ים

miḏ·yā·nîm,

וּבֵ֥ית

ū·ḇêṯ

and in a house

. חָֽבֶר׃

ḥā·ḇer.

נֶ֣פֶשׁ

ne·p̄eš

The soul

רָ֭שָׁע

rā·šā‘

of the wicked

אִוְּתָה־

’iw·wə·ṯāh-

– רָ֑ע

rā‘;

evil –

לֹא־

lō-

no

יֻחַ֖ן

yu·ḥan

בְּעֵינָ֣יו

bə·‘ê·nāw

. רֵעֵֽהוּ׃

rê·‘ê·hū.

､ בַּעְנָשׁ־

ba‘·nāš-

When is punished ､

לֵ֭ץ‪‬

lêṣ

– יֶחְכַּם־

yeḥ·kam-

is made wise –

פֶּ֑תִי

pe·ṯî;

､ וּבְהַשְׂכִּ֥יל

ū·ḇə·haś·kîl

but when is instructed ､

לְ֝חָכָ֗ם

lə·ḥā·ḵām,

the wise

יִקַּח־

yiq·qaḥ-

. דָּֽעַת׃

dā·‘aṯ.

מַשְׂכִּ֣יל

maś·kîl

Wisely considers

צַ֭דִּיק

ṣad·dîq

the righteous [God]

לְבֵ֣ית

lə·ḇêṯ

､ רָשָׁ֑ע

rā·šā‘;

of the wicked ､

מְסַלֵּ֖ף

mə·sal·lêp̄

רְשָׁעִ֣ים

rə·šā·‘îm

. לָרָֽע׃

lā·rā‘.

for [their] wickedness .

אֹטֵ֣ם

’ō·ṭêm

אָ֭זְנוֹ

’ā·zə·nōw

מִזַּעֲקַת־

miz·za·‘ă·qaṯ-

to the cry

､ דָּ֑ל

dāl;

of the poor ､

גַּֽם־

gam-

､ ה֥וּא

hū

he ､

יִ֝קְרָ֗א

yiq·rā,

will cry

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

and not

. יֵעָנֶֽה׃

yê·‘ā·neh.

be heard .

מַתָּ֣ן

mat·tān

בַּ֭סֵּתֶר

bas·sê·ṯer

יִכְפֶּה־

yiḵ·peh-

､ אָ֑ף

’āp̄;

וְשֹׁ֥חַד

wə·šō·ḥaḏ

and a bribe

בַּ֝חֵ֗ק

ba·ḥêq,

behind the back

חֵמָ֥ה

ḥê·māh

. עַזָּֽה׃

‘az·zāh.

שִׂמְחָ֣ה

śim·ḥāh

[it is] a joy

לַ֭צַּדִּיק

laṣ·ṣad·dîq

עֲשׂ֣וֹת

‘ă·śō·wṯ

to do

– מִשְׁפָּ֑ט

miš·pāṭ;

וּ֝מְחִתָּ֗ה

ū·mə·ḥit·tāh,

but destruction [will come]

לְפֹ֣עֲלֵי

lə·p̄ō·‘ă·lê

to the workers

. אָֽוֶן׃

’ā·wen.

אָדָ֗ם

’ā·ḏām,

תּ֭וֹעֶה

tō·w·‘eh

מִדֶּ֣רֶךְ

mid·de·reḵ

הַשְׂכֵּ֑ל

haś·kêl;

of understanding

בִּקְהַ֖ל

biq·hal

in the assembly

רְפָאִ֣ים

rə·p̄ā·’îm

of the dead

. יָנֽוּחַ׃

yā·nū·aḥ.

will rest .

– אִ֣ישׁ

’îš

[will be] a man –

מַ֭חְסוֹר

maḥ·sō·wr

אֹהֵ֣ב

’ō·hêḇ

שִׂמְחָ֑ה

śim·ḥāh;

אֹהֵ֥ב

’ō·hêḇ

יַֽיִן־

ya·yin-

וָ֝שֶׁ֗מֶן

wā·še·men,

and oil

לֹ֣א

lō

not

. יַעֲשִֽׁיר׃

ya·‘ă·šîr.

will be rich .

כֹּ֣פֶר

kō·p̄er

､ לַצַּדִּ֣יק

laṣ·ṣad·dîq

for the righteous ､

רָשָׁ֑ע

rā·šā‘;

the wicked [shall be]

וְתַ֖חַת

wə·ṯa·ḥaṯ

and for

יְשָׁרִ֣ים

yə·šā·rîm

. בּוֹגֵֽד׃

bō·w·ḡêḏ.

the unfaithful .

ט֗וֹב

ṭō·wḇ,

שֶׁ֥בֶת

še·ḇeṯ

בְּאֶֽרֶץ־

bə·’e·reṣ-

in

､ מִדְבָּ֑ר

miḏ·bār;

the wilderness ､

. מֵאֵ֖שֶׁת

mê·’ê·šeṯ

Than with a woman .

[מדונים]

mə·ḏō·w·nîm

-

(מִדְיָנִ֣ים)

miḏ·yā·nîm

. וָכָֽעַס׃

wā·ḵā·‘as.

and angry .

אוֹצָ֤ר ׀

’ō·w·ṣār

[There is] treasure

נֶחְמָ֣ד

neḥ·māḏ

וָ֭שֶׁמֶן

wā·še·men

and oil

בִּנְוֵ֣ה

bin·wêh

in the dwelling

– חָכָ֑ם

ḥā·ḵām;

of the wise –

וּכְסִ֖יל

ū·ḵə·sîl

אָדָ֣ם

’ā·ḏām

. יְבַלְּעֶֽנּוּ׃

yə·ḇal·lə·‘en·nū.

רֹ֭דֵף

rō·ḏêp̄

צְדָקָ֣ה

ṣə·ḏā·qāh

וָחָ֑סֶד

wā·ḥā·seḏ;

יִמְצָ֥א

yim·ṣā

､ חַ֝יִּ֗ים

ḥay·yîm,

life ､

､ צְדָקָ֥ה

ṣə·ḏā·qāh

righteousness ､

. וְכָבֽוֹד׃

wə·ḵā·ḇō·wḏ.

and honor .

עִ֣יר

‘îr

The city

､ גִּ֭בֹּרִים

gib·bō·rîm

of the mighty ､

עָלָ֣ה

‘ā·lāh

חָכָ֑ם

ḥā·ḵām;

וַ֝יֹּ֗רֶד

way·yō·reḏ,

and brings down

עֹ֣ז

‘ōz

. מִבְטֶחָֽה׃

miḇ·ṭe·ḥāh.

שֹׁמֵ֣ר

šō·mêr

פִּ֭יו

pîw

וּלְשׁוֹנ֑וֹ

ū·lə·šō·w·nōw;

שֹׁמֵ֖ר

šō·mêr

מִצָּר֣וֹת

miṣ·ṣā·rō·wṯ

. נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃

nap̄·šōw.

זֵ֣ד

zêḏ

יָ֭הִיר

yā·hîr

[and] haughty [man]

לֵ֣ץ

lêṣ

､ שְׁמ֑וֹ

šə·mōw;

ע֝וֹשֶׂ֗ה

‘ō·w·śeh,

בְּעֶבְרַ֥ת

bə·‘eḇ·raṯ

. זָדֽוֹן׃

zā·ḏō·wn.

תַּאֲוַ֣ת

ta·’ă·waṯ

עָצֵ֣ל

‘ā·ṣêl

of the lazy [man]

תְּמִיתֶ֑נּוּ

tə·mî·ṯen·nū;

כִּֽי־

kî-

מֵאֲנ֖וּ

mê·’ă·nū

יָדָ֣יו

yā·ḏāw

. לַעֲשֽׂוֹת׃

la·‘ă·śō·wṯ.

to labor .

כָּל־

kāl-

הַ֭יּוֹם

hay·yō·wm

הִתְאַוָּ֣ה

hiṯ·’aw·wāh

תַאֲוָ֑ה

ṯa·’ă·wāh;

וְצַדִּ֥יק

wə·ṣad·dîq

but the righteous

יִ֝תֵּ֗ן

yit·tên,

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

and not

. יַחְשֹֽׂךְ׃

yaḥ·śōḵ.

זֶ֣בַח

ze·ḇaḥ

רְ֭שָׁעִים

rə·šā·‘îm

of the wicked

､ תּוֹעֵבָ֑ה

tō·w·‘ê·ḇāh;

[is] an abomination ､

אַ֝֗ף

’ap̄,

､ כִּֽי־

kî-

how much more ､

בְזִמָּ֥ה

ḇə·zim·māh

with wicked intent

؟ יְבִיאֶֽנּוּ׃

yə·ḇî·’en·nū.

[when] he brings it ؟

עֵד־

‘êḏ-

כְּזָבִ֥ים

kə·zā·ḇîm

､ יֹאבֵ֑ד

yō·ḇêḏ;

shall perish ､

וְאִ֥ישׁ

wə·’îš

but the man

שׁ֝וֹמֵ֗עַ

w·mê·a‘,

and who hears [him]

לָנֶ֥צַח

lā·ne·ṣaḥ

. יְדַבֵּֽר׃

yə·ḏab·bêr.

will speak .

הֵעֵ֬ז

hê·‘êz

אִ֣ישׁ

’îš

רָשָׁ֣ע

rā·šā‘

､ בְּפָנָ֑יו

bə·p̄ā·nāw;

､ וְ֝יָשָׁ֗ר

wə·yā·šār,

but [as for] the upright ､

ה֤וּא ׀

hū

he

[יכין]

yā·ḵîn

-

(יָבִ֬ין)

yā·ḇîn

[דרכיו]

də·rā·ḵāw

-

. (דַּרְכּֽוֹ׃)

אֵ֣ין

’ên

[There is] no

חָ֭כְמָה

ḥāḵ·māh

וְאֵ֣ין

wə·’ên

and no

תְּבוּנָ֑ה

tə·ḇū·nāh;

וְאֵ֥ין

wə·’ên

and no

עֵ֝צָ֗ה

‘ê·ṣāh,

לְנֶ֣גֶד

lə·ne·ḡeḏ

. יְהוָֽה׃

Yah·weh.

of battle ､

but of Yahweh

. הַתְּשׁוּעָֽה׃

hat·tə·šū·‘āh.

deliverance [is] .
