Wine is a Mocker

A mocker ､

הַ֭יַּין‪‬

hay·yayn

Wine [is]

､ הֹמֶ֣ה

hō·meh

[is] a brawler ､

שֵׁכָ֑ר

šê·ḵār;

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

שֹׁ֥גֶה

šō·ḡeh

בּ֝֗וֹ

bōw,

by it

לֹ֣א

lō

not

. יֶחְכָּֽם׃

yeḥ·kām.

is wise .

נַ֣הַם

na·ham

– כַּ֭כְּפִיר

kak·kə·p̄îr

of [is] like a lion –

אֵ֣ימַת

’ê·maṯ

the fear

מֶ֑לֶךְ

me·leḵ;

of a king

מִ֝תְעַבְּר֗וֹ

miṯ·‘ab·bə·rōw,

[Whoever] provokes him to anger

חוֹטֵ֥א

ḥō·w·ṭê

. נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃

nap̄·šōw.

[against] his own life .

כָּב֣וֹד

kā·ḇō·wḏ

[it is] honorable

לָ֭אִישׁ

lā·’îš

שֶׁ֣בֶת

še·ḇeṯ

– מֵרִ֑יב

mê·rîḇ;

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

אֱ֝וִ֗יל

’ĕ·wîl,

. יִתְגַּלָּֽע׃

yiṯ·gal·lā‘.

can start a quarrel .

– מֵ֭חֹרֶף

mê·ḥō·rep̄

Because of winter –

עָצֵ֣ל

‘ā·ṣêl

the lazy [man]

לֹא־

lō-

not

יַחֲרֹ֑שׁ

ya·ḥă·rōš;

will plow

[ישאל]

yiš·’al

-

(וְשָׁאַ֖ל)

wə·šā·’al

He will beg

､ בַּקָּצִ֣יר

baq·qā·ṣîr

during harvest ､

. וָאָֽיִן׃

wā·’ā·yin.

and [have] nothing .

– מַ֣יִם

ma·yim

[is like] water –

עֲ֭מֻקִּים

‘ă·muq·qîm

עֵצָ֣ה

‘ê·ṣāh

בְלֶב־

ḇə·leḇ-

in the heart

אִ֑ישׁ

’îš;

of man

וְאִ֖ישׁ

wə·’îš

but a man

תְּבוּנָ֣ה

tə·ḇū·nāh

of understanding

. יִדְלֶֽנָּה׃

yiḏ·len·nāh.

will draw it out .

רָב־

rāḇ-

אָדָ֗ם

’ā·ḏām,

יִ֭קְרָא

yiq·rā

אִ֣ישׁ

’îš

､ חַסְדּ֑וֹ

ḥas·dōw;

his own goodness ､

וְאִ֥ישׁ

wə·’îš

but a man

אֱ֝מוּנִ֗ים

’ĕ·mū·nîm,

of faithfulness

מִ֣י

mî

؟ יִמְצָֽא׃

yim·ṣā.

מִתְהַלֵּ֣ךְ

miṯ·hal·lêḵ

– בְּתֻמּ֣וֹ

bə·ṯum·mōw

in his integrity –

צַדִּ֑יק

ṣad·dîq;

the righteous [man]

אַשְׁרֵ֖י

’aš·rê

בָנָ֣יו

ḇā·nāw

His children [are]

. אַחֲרָֽיו׃

’a·ḥă·rāw.

מֶ֗לֶךְ

me·leḵ,

יוֹשֵׁ֥ב

yō·wō·šêḇ

עַל־

‘al-

on

כִּסֵּא־

kis·sê-

דִ֑ין

ḏîn;

מְזָרֶ֖ה

mə·zā·reh

בְעֵינָ֣יו

ḇə·‘ê·nāw

כָּל־

kāl-

. רָֽע׃

rā‘.

מִֽי־

mî-

､ יֹ֭אמַר

yō·mar

､ זִכִּ֣יתִי

zik·kî·ṯî

I have made clean ､

לִבִּ֑י

lib·bî;

טָ֝הַ֗רְתִּי

ṭā·har·tî,

I am pure

؟ מֵחַטָּאתִֽי׃

mê·ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯî.

from my sin ؟

אֶ֣בֶן

’e·ḇen

וָ֭אֶבֶן

wā·’e·ḇen

and [Diverse] weights

אֵיפָ֣ה

’ê·p̄āh

､ וְאֵיפָ֑ה

wə·’ê·p̄āh;

and [diverse] measures ､

תּוֹעֲבַ֥ת

tō·w·‘ă·ḇaṯ

an abomination to

יְ֝הוָ֗ה

Yah·weh

גַּם־

gam-

. שְׁנֵיהֶֽם׃

šə·nê·hem.

the two of them [are] .

גַּ֣ם

gam

､ בְּ֭מַעֲלָלָיו

bə·ma·‘ă·lā·lāw

by his deeds ､

יִתְנַכֶּר־

yiṯ·nak·ker-

נָ֑עַר

nā·‘ar;

אִם־

’im-

､ זַ֖ךְ

zaḵ

pure ､

וְאִם־

wə·’im-

and

יָשָׁ֣ר

yā·šār

. פָּעֳלֽוֹ׃

pā·‘o·lōw.

what he does [is] .

､ אֹ֣זֶן

’ō·zen

The ear ､

שֹׁ֭מַעַת

ma·‘aṯ

､ וְעַ֣יִן

wə·‘a·yin

and the eye ､

רֹאָ֑ה

rō·’āh;

יְ֝הוָ֗ה

Yah·weh

עָשָׂ֥ה

‘ā·śāh

גַם־

ḡam-

. שְׁנֵיהֶֽם׃

šə·nê·hem.

the two of them .

אַל־

’al-

Not

תֶּֽאֱהַ֣ב

te·’ĕ·haḇ

､ שֵׁ֭נָה

nāh

פֶּן־

pen-

– תִּוָּרֵ֑שׁ

tiw·wā·rêš;

you come to poverty –

פְּקַ֖ח

pə·qaḥ

､ עֵינֶ֣יךָ

‘ê·ne·ḵā

שְֽׂבַֽע־

śə·ḇa‘-

[and] you will be satisfied

. לָֽחֶם׃

lā·ḥem.

with bread .

רַ֣ע

ra‘

[it is] good

､ רַ֭ע

ra‘

for nothing ､

יֹאמַ֣ר

yō·mar

､ הַקּוֹנֶ֑ה

haq·qō·w·neh;

the buyer ､

､ וְאֹזֵ֥ל

wə·’ō·zêl

but when has gone his way ､

ל֝֗וֹ

lōw,

he

אָ֣ז

’āz

. יִתְהַלָּֽל׃

yiṯ·hal·lāl.

יֵ֣שׁ

yêš

､ זָ֭הָב

zā·hāḇ

gold ､

וְרָב־

wə·rāḇ-

and a multitude

– פְּנִינִ֑ים

pə·nî·nîm;

of rubies –

. וּכְלִ֥י

ū·ḵə·lî

but [are] a jewel .

יְ֝קָ֗ר

yə·qār,

שִׂפְתֵי־

śip̄·ṯê-

the lips

. דָֽעַת׃

ḏā·‘aṯ.

לְֽקַח־

lə·qaḥ-

בִּ֭גְדוֹ

biḡ·ḏōw

the garment of one

כִּי־

kî-

עָ֣רַב

‘ā·raḇ

– זָ֑ר

zār;

[for] a stranger –

וּבְעַ֖ד

ū·ḇə·‘aḏ

and [when it] is for

[נכרים]

nā·ḵə·rîm

-

(נָכְרִיָּ֣ה)

nā·ḵə·rî·yāh

. חַבְלֵֽהוּ׃

ḥaḇ·lê·hū.

hold it as a pledge .

עָרֵ֣ב

‘ā·rêḇ

[is] sweet

– לָ֭אִישׁ

lā·’îš

to a man –

לֶ֣חֶם

le·ḥem

שָׁ֑קֶר

šā·qer;

[gained] by deceit

וְ֝אַחַ֗ר

wə·’a·ḥar,

יִמָּֽלֵא־

yim·mā·lê-

will be filled

פִ֥יהוּ

p̄î·hū

. חָצָֽץ׃

ḥā·ṣāṣ.

with gravel .

מַ֭חֲשָׁבוֹת

ma·ḥă·šā·ḇō·wṯ

､ בְּעֵצָ֣ה

bə·‘ê·ṣāh

by counsel ､

תִכּ֑וֹן

ṯik·kō·wn;

are established

וּ֝בְתַחְבֻּל֗וֹת

ū·ḇə·ṯaḥ·bu·lō·wṯ,

and by wise counsel

עֲשֵׂ֣ה

‘ă·śêh

. מִלְחָמָֽה׃

mil·ḥā·māh.

גּֽוֹלֶה־

gō·w·leh-

､ סּ֭וֹד

sō·wḏ

הוֹלֵ֣ךְ

hō·w·lêḵ

He who goes about

רָכִ֑יל

rā·ḵîl;

[as] a talebearer

וּלְפֹתֶ֥ה

ū·lə·p̄ō·ṯeh

therefore with one who flatters

שְׂ֝פָתָ֗יו

p̄ā·ṯāw,

לֹ֣א

lō

not

. תִתְעָרָֽב׃

ṯiṯ·‘ā·rāḇ.

מְ֭קַלֵּל

mə·qal·lêl

אָבִ֣יו

’ā·ḇîw

､ וְאִמּ֑וֹ

wə·’im·mōw;

or his mother ､

יִֽדְעַ֥ךְ

yiḏ·‘aḵ

will be put out

נֵ֝ר֗וֹ

nê·rōw,

[באישון]

bə·’î·šō·wn

-

(בֶּאֱשׁ֥וּן)

be·’ĕ·šūn

. חֹֽשֶׁךְ׃

ḥō·šeḵ.

נַ֭חֲלָה

na·ḥă·lāh

[מבחלת]

mə·ḇu·ḥe·leṯ

-

(מְבֹהֶ֣לֶת)

mə·ḇō·he·leṯ

– בָּרִאשֹׁנָ֑ה

bā·ri·šō·nāh;

at the beginning –

וְ֝אַחֲרִיתָ֗הּ

wə·’a·ḥă·rî·ṯāh,

and at the end

לֹ֣א

lō

not

. תְבֹרָֽךְ׃

ṯə·ḇō·rāḵ.

will be blessed .

אַל־

’al-

Not

תֹּאמַ֥ר

tō·mar

do say

אֲשַׁלְּמָה־

’ă·šal·lə·māh-

I will recompense

– רָ֑ע

rā‘;

evil –

קַוֵּ֥ה

qaw·wêh

､ לַֽ֝יהוָ֗ה

Yah·weh

וְיֹ֣שַֽׁע

wə·yō·ša‘

and He will save

. לָֽךְ׃

lāḵ.

תּוֹעֲבַ֣ת

tō·w·‘ă·ḇaṯ

An abomination to

– יְ֭הוָה

Yah·weh

אֶ֣בֶן

’e·ḇen

וָאָ֑בֶן

wā·’ā·ḇen;

and [Diverse] weights [are]

וּמֹאזְנֵ֖י

ū·mō·zə·nê

and scales [are]

מִרְמָ֣ה

mir·māh

לֹא־

lō-

not

. טֽוֹב׃

ṭō·wḇ.

מֵיהוָ֥ה‪‬‪‬‪‬

Yah·weh

מִצְעֲדֵי־

miṣ·‘ă·ḏê-

גָ֑בֶר

ḡā·ḇer;

of a man

וְ֝אָדָ֗ם

wə·’ā·ḏām,

מַה־

mah-

יָּבִ֥ין

yā·ḇîn

؟ דַּרְכּֽוֹ׃

dar·kōw.

מוֹקֵ֣שׁ

mō·w·qêš

[it is] a snare

אָ֭דָם

’ā·ḏām

יָ֣לַע

yā·la‘

to devote rashly

､ קֹ֑דֶשׁ

qō·ḏeš;

[something as] holy ､

וְאַחַ֖ר

wə·’a·ḥar

נְדָרִ֣ים

nə·ḏā·rîm

. לְבַקֵּֽר׃

lə·ḇaq·qêr.

to reconsider .

מְזָרֶ֣ה

mə·zā·reh

､ רְ֭שָׁעִים

rə·šā·‘îm

the wicked ､

מֶ֣לֶךְ

me·leḵ

חָכָ֑ם

ḥā·ḵām;

וַיָּ֖שֶׁב

way·yā·šeḇ

עֲלֵיהֶ֣ם

‘ă·lê·hem

. אוֹפָֽן׃

’ō·w·p̄ān.

the [threshing] wheel .

נֵ֣ר

nêr

[is] the lamp

､ יְ֭הוָה

Yah·weh

of Yahweh ､

נִשְׁמַ֣ת

niš·maṯ

אָדָ֑ם

’ā·ḏām;

of a man

חֹ֝פֵ֗שׂ

ḥō·p̄êś,

כָּל־

kāl-

חַדְרֵי־

ḥaḏ·rê-

the inner depths

. בָֽטֶן׃

ḇā·ṭen.

חֶ֣סֶד

ḥe·seḏ

וֶ֭אֱמֶת

we·’ĕ·meṯ

יִצְּרוּ־

yiṣ·ṣə·rū-

､ מֶ֑לֶךְ

me·leḵ;

the king ､

וְסָעַ֖ד

wə·sā·‘aḏ

and he upholds

בַּחֶ֣סֶד

ba·ḥe·seḏ

by lovingkindness

. כִּסְאֽוֹ׃

kis·’ōw.

תִּפְאֶ֣רֶת

tip̄·’e·reṯ

בַּחוּרִ֣ים

ba·ḥū·rîm

､ כֹּחָ֑ם

kō·ḥām;

[is] their strength ､

וַהֲדַ֖ר

wa·hă·ḏar

and the splendor

זְקֵנִ֣ים

zə·qê·nîm

. שֵׂיבָֽה׃

śê·ḇāh.

[is] their gray head .

חַבֻּר֣וֹת

ḥab·bu·rō·wṯ

פֶּ֭צַע

pe·ṣa‘

[תמריק]

tam·rîq

-

(תַּמְר֣וּק)

tam·rūq

､ בְּרָ֑ע

bə·rā‘;

evil ､

וּ֝מַכּ֗וֹת

ū·mak·kō·wṯ,

and as [do] stripes

חַדְרֵי־

ḥaḏ·rê-

the inner depths

. בָֽטֶן׃

ḇā·ṭen.

of the heart .
