Listen to a Father's Instruction

､ שִׁמְע֣וּ

Hear ､

､ בָ֭נִים

ḇā·nîm

[my] children ､

מ֣וּסַר

mū·sar

the instruction

､ אָ֑ב

’āḇ;

of a father ､

וְ֝הַקְשִׁ֗יבוּ

wə·haq·šî·ḇū,

and give attention

לָדַ֥עַת

lā·ḏa·‘aṯ

. בִּינָֽה׃

bî·nāh.

understanding .

כִּ֤י

kî

､ לֶ֣קַח

le·qaḥ

ט֭וֹב

ṭō·wḇ

נָתַ֣תִּי

nā·ṯat·tî

לָכֶ֑ם

lā·ḵem;

תּֽ֝וֹרָתִ֗י

tō·w·rā·ṯî,

my law

אַֽל־

’al-

not

. תַּעֲזֹֽבוּ׃

ta·‘ă·zō·ḇū.

כִּי־

kî-

､ בֵ֭ן

ḇên

son ､

הָיִ֣יתִי

hā·yî·ṯî

לְאָבִ֑י

lə·’ā·ḇî;

of my father

רַ֥ךְ

raḵ

וְ֝יָחִ֗יד

wə·yā·ḥîḏ,

and the only one

לִפְנֵ֥י

lip̄·nê

in the sight

. אִמִּֽי׃

’im·mî.

of my mother .

וַיֹּרֵ֗נִי

way·yō·rê·nî,

And He taught me

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר

way·yō·mer

and said

לִ֗י

lî,

to me

יִֽתְמָךְ־

yiṯ·māḵ-

– דְּבָרַ֥י

də·ḇā·ray

my words –

לִבֶּ֑ךָ

lib·be·ḵā;

שְׁמֹ֖ר

šə·mōr

､ מִצְוֺתַ֣י

miṣ·wō·ṯay

my commands ､

. וֶֽחְיֵֽה׃

weḥ·yêh.

and live .

קְנֵ֣ה

qə·nêh

､ חָ֭כְמָה

ḥāḵ·māh

קְנֵ֣ה

qə·nêh

! בִינָ֑ה

ḇî·nāh;

understanding !

– אַל־

’al-

not –

תִּשְׁכַּ֥ח

tiš·kaḥ

וְאַל־

wə·’al-

תֵּ֝֗ט

têṭ,

מֵֽאִמְרֵי־

mê·’im·rê-

. פִֽי׃

p̄î.

of my mouth .

､ אַל־

’al-

Not ､

תַּעַזְבֶ֥הָ

ta·‘az·ḇe·hā

וְתִשְׁמְרֶ֑ךָּ

wə·ṯiš·mə·re·kā;

and she will preserve you

אֱהָבֶ֥הָ

’ĕ·hā·ḇe·hā

. וְתִצְּרֶֽךָּ׃

wə·ṯiṣ·ṣə·re·kā.

and she will keep you .

– רֵאשִׁ֣ית

rê·šîṯ

The principal thing –

חָ֭כְמָה

ḥāḵ·māh

קְנֵ֣ה

qə·nêh

[Therefore] get

– חָכְמָ֑ה

ḥāḵ·māh

וּבְכָל־

ū·ḇə·ḵāl

and in all

קִ֝נְיָנְךָ֗

qin·yā·nə·ḵā,

קְנֵ֣ה

qə·nêh

. בִינָֽה׃

ḇî·nāh.

understanding .

סַלְסְלֶ֥הָ

sal·sə·le·hā

וּֽתְרוֹמְמֶ֑ךָּ

ū·ṯə·rō·wm·me·kā;

and she will promote you

､ תְּ֝כַבֵּ֗דְךָ

tə·ḵab·bê·ḏə·ḵā,

she will bring you honor ､

כִּ֣י

kî

. תְחַבְּקֶֽנָּה׃

ṯə·ḥab·bə·qen·nāh.

you embrace her .

תִּתֵּ֣ן

tit·tên

לְ֭רֹאשְׁךָ

lə·rō·šə·ḵā

לִוְיַת־

liw·yaṯ-

– חֵ֑ן

ḥên;

of grace –

עֲטֶ֖רֶת

‘ă·ṭe·reṯ

תִּפְאֶ֣רֶת

tip̄·’e·reṯ

. תְּמַגְּנֶֽךָּ׃

tə·mag·gə·ne·kā.

she will deliver to you .

､ שְׁמַ֣ע

šə·ma‘

Hear ､

､ בְּ֭נִי

bə·nî

my son ､

וְקַ֣ח

wə·qaḥ

– אֲמָרָ֑י

’ă·mā·rāy;

my sayings –

. וְיִרְבּ֥וּ

wə·yir·bū

and will be many .

לְ֝ךָ֗

lə·ḵā,

שְׁנ֣וֹת

šə·nō·wṯ

. חַיִּֽים׃

ḥay·yîm.

of life .

בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ

bə·ḏe·reḵ

In the way

– חָ֭כְמָה

ḥāḵ·māh

of wisdom –

הֹרֵתִ֑יךָ

hō·rê·ṯî·ḵā;

I have taught you

הִ֝דְרַכְתִּ֗יךָ

hiḏ·raḵ·tî·ḵā,

בְּמַעְגְּלֵי־

bə·ma‘·gə·lê-

. יֹֽשֶׁר׃

yō·šer.

､ בְּֽ֭לֶכְתְּךָ

bə·leḵ·tə·ḵā

When you walk ､

לֹא־

lō-

not

– יֵצַ֣ר

yê·ṣar

will be hindered –

צַעֲדֶ֑ךָ

ṣa·‘ă·ḏe·ḵā;

וְאִם־

wə·’im-

and when

､ תָּ֝ר֗וּץ

tā·rūṣ,

לֹ֣א

lō

not

. תִכָּשֵֽׁל׃

ṯik·kā·šêl.

you will stumble .

הַחֲזֵ֣ק

ha·ḥă·zêq

– בַּמּוּסָ֣ר

bam·mū·sār

of instruction –

אַל־

’al-

not

– תֶּ֑רֶף

te·rep̄;

do let go –

נִ֝צְּרֶ֗הָ

niṣ·ṣə·re·hā,

כִּי־

kî-

הִ֥יא

hî

she [is]

. חַיֶּֽיךָ׃

ḥay·ye·ḵā.

בְּאֹ֣רַח

bə·’ō·raḥ

The path

､ רְ֭שָׁעִים

rə·šā·‘îm

of the wicked ､

אַל־

’al-

not

תָּבֹ֑א

tā·ḇō;

וְאַל־

wə·’al-

and not

תְּ֝אַשֵּׁ֗ר

tə·’aš·šêr,

בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ

bə·ḏe·reḵ

in the way

. רָעִֽים׃

rā·‘îm.

of evil .

פְּרָעֵ֥הוּ

pə·rā·‘ê·hū

אַל־

’al-

not

תַּעֲבָר־

ta·‘ă·ḇār-

בּ֑וֹ

bōw;

on it

שְׂטֵ֖ה

śə·ṭêh

מֵעָלָ֣יו

mê·‘ā·lāw

. וַעֲבֽוֹר׃

wa·‘ă·ḇō·wr.

and pass on .

כִּ֤י

kî

､ לֹ֣א

lō

not ､

יִֽ֭שְׁנוּ

yiš·nū

אִם־

’im-

לֹ֣א

lō

not

– יָרֵ֑עוּ

yā·rê·‘ū;

they have done evil –

､ וְֽנִגְזְלָ֥ה

wə·niḡ·zə·lāh

and is taken away ､

שְׁ֝נָתָ֗ם

nā·ṯām,

אִם־

’im-

לֹ֥א

lō

not

[יכשולו]

yiḵ·šō·w·lū

-

. (יַכְשִֽׁילוּ׃)

yaḵ·šî·lū.

they make [someone] fall .

כִּ֣י

kî

לָ֭חֲמוּ

lā·ḥă·mū

לֶ֣חֶם

le·ḥem

､ רֶ֑שַׁע

re·ša‘;

of wickedness ､

וְיֵ֖ין

wə·yên

and the wine

חֲמָסִ֣ים

ḥă·mā·sîm

. יִשְׁתּֽוּ׃

yiš·tū.

וְאֹ֣רַח

wə·’ō·raḥ

But the path

צַ֭דִּיקִים

ṣad·dî·qîm

of the just

､ כְּא֣וֹר

kə·’ō·wr

[is] like sun ､

נֹ֑גַהּ

nō·ḡah;

הוֹלֵ֥ךְ

hō·w·lêḵ

וָ֝א֗וֹר

wā·’ō·wr,

עַד־

‘aḏ-

נְכ֥וֹן

nə·ḵō·wn

. הַיּֽוֹם׃

hay·yō·wm.

the day .

דֶּ֣רֶךְ

de·reḵ

The way

רְ֭שָׁעִים

rə·šā·‘îm

of the wicked

– כָּֽאֲפֵלָ֑ה

kā·’ă·p̄ê·lāh;

[is] like darkness –

לֹ֥א

lō

not

יָ֝דְע֗וּ

yā·ḏə·‘ū,

בַּמֶּ֥ה

bam·meh

. יִכָּשֵֽׁלוּ׃

yik·kā·šê·lū.

makes them stumble .

､ בְּ֭נִי

bə·nî

My son ､

– לִדְבָרַ֣י

liḏ·ḇā·ray

to my words –

הַקְשִׁ֑יבָה

haq·šî·ḇāh;

לַ֝אֲמָרַ֗י

la·’ă·mā·ray,

הַט־

haṭ-

. אָזְנֶֽךָ׃

’ā·zə·ne·ḵā.

אַל־

’al-

Not

יַלִּ֥יזוּ

yal·lî·zū

do let them depart

– מֵעֵינֶ֑יךָ

mê·‘ê·ne·ḵā;

from your eyes –

שָׁ֝מְרֵ֗ם

mə·rêm,

בְּת֣וֹךְ

bə·ṯō·wḵ

in the midst

. לְבָבֶֽךָ׃

lə·ḇā·ḇe·ḵā.

of your heart .

כִּֽי־

kî-

חַיִּ֣ים

ḥay·yîm

הֵ֭ם

hêm

לְמֹצְאֵיהֶ֑ם

lə·mō·ṣə·’ê·hem;

to those who find them

וּֽלְכָל־

ū·lə·ḵāl-

and to all

בְּשָׂר֥וֹ

bə·śā·rōw

. מַרְפֵּֽא׃

mar·pê.

מִֽכָּל־

mik·kāl

With all

– מִ֭שְׁמָר

miš·mār

נְצֹ֣ר

nə·ṣōr

לִבֶּ֑ךָ

lib·be·ḵā;

כִּֽי־

kî-

מִ֝מֶּ֗נּוּ

mim·men·nū,

out of it

תּוֹצְא֥וֹת

tō·wṣ·’ō·wṯ

[spring] the issues

. חַיִּֽים׃

ḥay·yîm.

of life .

הָסֵ֣ר

hā·sêr

מִ֭מְּךָ

mim·mə·ḵā

עִקְּשׁ֣וּת

‘iq·qə·šūṯ

､ פֶּ֑ה

peh;

a mouth ､

וּלְז֥וּת

ū·lə·zūṯ

שְׂ֝פָתַ֗יִם

p̄ā·ṯa·yim,

הַרְחֵ֥ק

har·ḥêq

. מִמֶּֽךָּ׃

mim·me·kā.

עֵ֭ינֶיךָ

‘ê·ne·ḵā

､ לְנֹ֣כַח

lə·nō·ḵaḥ

straight ahead ､

יַבִּ֑יטוּ

yab·bî·ṭū;

וְ֝עַפְעַפֶּ֗יךָ

wə·‘ap̄·‘ap·pe·ḵā,

and your eyelids

יַיְשִׁ֥רוּ

yay·ši·rū

. נֶגְדֶּֽךָ׃

neḡ·de·ḵā.

פַּ֭לֵּס

pal·lês

מַעְגַּ֣ל

ma‘·gal

the path

､ רַגְלֶ֑ךָ

raḡ·le·ḵā;

of your feet ､

וְֽכָל־

wə·ḵāl

and all

דְּרָכֶ֥יךָ

də·rā·ḵe·ḵā

. יִכֹּֽנוּ׃

yik·kō·nū.

let be established .

אַֽל־

’al-

Not

תֵּט־

têṭ-

and do turn

יָמִ֥ין

yā·mîn

to the right

– וּשְׂמֹ֑אול

ū·śə·mō·wl;

or the left –

הָסֵ֖ר

hā·sêr

רַגְלְךָ֣

raḡ·lə·ḵā

. מֵרָֽע׃

mê·rā‘.
