Thematic Bible: Debts

Thematic Bible

My son, if you have become surety for your neighbor, Have given a pledge for a stranger, If you have been snared with the words of your mouth, Have been caught with the words of your mouth,

The righteousness of the blameless will smooth his way,
But the wicked will fall by his own wickedness.

A man lacking in sense pledges

if he does not lend money on interest or take increase, if he keeps his hand from iniquity and executes true justice between man and man,

“No one shall take a handmill or an upper millstone in pledge, for he would be taking a life in pledge.

“They drive away the donkeys of the orphans;
They take the widow’s ox for a pledge.

“On garments taken as pledges they stretch out beside every altar,
And in the house of their God they drink the wine of those who have been fined.

"When he had begun to settle them, one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him. "But since he did not have the means to repay, his lord commanded him to be sold, along with his wife and children and all that he had, and repayment to be made.

There were others who said, “We are mortgaging our fields, our vineyards and our houses that we might get grain because of the famine.”

"And he summoned each one of his master's debtors, and he began saying to the first, 'How much do you owe my master?' "And he said, 'A hundred measures of oil.' And he said to him, 'Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.'

Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debt, and you and your sons can live on the rest.”
