Meanwhile, David and all the house of Israel were celebrating and dancing before the Lord with all kinds of instruments made of fir or cypress wood, with lyres, harps, tambourines, castanets, and cymbals.
The singers go in front, the players of instruments last;
Between them the maidens playing on tambourines.
Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron [and Moses], took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women followed her with timbrels and dancing.
Then Jephthah came to his house at Mizpah, and this is what he saw: his daughter coming out to meet him with tambourines and with dancing. And she was his only child; except for her he had no son or daughter.
“They lift up their voices and sing to the tambourine and the lyre
And rejoice to the sound of the flute.
Praise Him with tambourine and dancing;
Praise Him with stringed instruments and flute.

And he sent her away for two months, and she went with her companions and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains. At the end of two months she returned to her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed. She never mated with a man. This became a custom in Israel -- " That the daughters of Israel went yearly to mourn the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.
