So the waters were healed unto this day, according to the saying of Elisha which he spoke.
And one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered from it his lap full of wild gourds, and came and shred them into the pot of pottage: for they knew them not. So they poured out for the men to eat. And it came to pass, as they were eating of the pottage, that they cried out, and said, O you man of God, there is death in the pot. And they could not eat of it.
They have spoken words, swearing falsely in making a covenant: thus judgment springs up like hemlock in the furrows of the field.
And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many people of Israel died.
They shall be wasted with hunger, and devoured with burning heat, and with bitter destruction: I will also send the teeth of animals upon them, with the poison of serpents of the dust.
For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison thereof drinks up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.
Why do we sit still? assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the fortified cities, and let us be silent there: for the LORD our God has put us to silence, and given us poisoned water to drink, because we have sinned against the LORD.

For, behold, I will send serpents, adders, among you, which will not be charmed, and they shall bite you, says the LORD.

But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds embittered against the brethren.

But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when it strikes a man.
