'Called' in the Bible
“Then I will restore your judges as at the first,And your counselors as at the beginning;After that you will be called the city of righteousness,A faithful city.”
For seven women will take hold of one man in that day, saying, “We will eat our own bread and wear our own clothes, only let us be called by your name; take away our reproach!”
It will come about that he who is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy—everyone who is recorded for life in Jerusalem.
And one called out to another and said,“Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of hosts,The whole earth is full of His glory.”
And the foundations of the thresholds trembled at the voice of him who called out, while the temple was filling with smoke.
For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us;And the government will rest on His shoulders;And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
I have commanded My consecrated ones,I have even called My mighty warriors,My proudly exulting ones,To execute My anger.
In that day five cities in the land of Egypt will be speaking the language of Canaan and swearing allegiance to the Lord of hosts; one will be called the City of Destruction.
Then the lookout called,“O Lord, I stand continually by day on the watchtower,And I am stationed every night at my guard post.
Therefore in that day the Lord God of hosts called you to weeping, to wailing,To shaving the head and to wearing sackcloth.
Even Egypt, whose help is vain and empty.Therefore, I have called her“Rahab who has been exterminated.”
For thus says the Lord to me,“As the lion or the young lion growls over his prey,Against which a band of shepherds is called out,And he will not be terrified at their voice nor disturbed at their noise,So will the Lord of hosts come down to wage war on Mount Zion and on its hill.”
No longer will the fool be called noble,Or the rogue be spoken of as generous.
A highway will be there, a roadway,And it will be called the Highway of Holiness.The unclean will not travel on it,But it will be for him who walks that way,And fools will not wander on it.
You whom I have taken from the ends of the earth,And called from its remotest partsAnd said to you, ‘You are My servant,I have chosen you and not rejected you.
“I am the Lord, I have called You in righteousness,I will also hold You by the hand and watch over You,And I will appoint You as a covenant to the people,As a light to the nations,
But now, thus says the Lord, your Creator, O Jacob,And He who formed you, O Israel,“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;I have called you by name; you are Mine!
Everyone who is called by My name,And whom I have created for My glory,Whom I have formed, even whom I have made.”
“Yet you have not called on Me, O Jacob;But you have become weary of Me, O Israel.
“For the sake of Jacob My servant,And Israel My chosen one,I have also called you by your name;I have given you a title of honorThough you have not known Me.
“Come down and sit in the dust,O virgin daughter of Babylon;Sit on the ground without a throne,O daughter of the Chaldeans!For you shall no longer be called tender and delicate.
“Sit silently, and go into darkness,O daughter of the Chaldeans,For you will no longer be calledThe queen of kingdoms.
“You have not heard, you have not known.Even from long ago your ear has not been open,Because I knew that you would deal very treacherously;And you have been called a rebel from birth.
“Listen to Me, O Jacob, even Israel whom I called;I am He, I am the first, I am also the last.
“I, even I, have spoken; indeed I have called him,I have brought him, and He will make his ways successful.
Listen to Me, O islands,And pay attention, you peoples from afar.The Lord called Me from the womb;From the body of My mother He named Me.
“Why was there no man when I came?When I called, why was there none to answer?Is My hand so short that it cannot ransom?Or have I no power to deliver?Behold, I dry up the sea with My rebuke,I make the rivers a wilderness;Their fish stink for lack of waterAnd die of thirst.
“Look to Abraham your fatherAnd to Sarah who gave birth to you in pain;When he was but one I called him,Then I blessed him and multiplied him.”
“For your husband is your Maker,Whose name is the Lord of hosts;And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel,Who is called the God of all the earth.
“For the Lord has called you,Like a wife forsaken and grieved in spirit,Even like a wife of one’s youth when she is rejected,”Says your God.
Even those I will bring to My holy mountainAnd make them joyful in My house of prayer.Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be acceptable on My altar;For My house will be called a house of prayer for all the peoples.”
“Those from among you will rebuild the ancient ruins;You will raise up the age-old foundations;And you will be called the repairer of the breach,The restorer of the streets in which to dwell.
To grant those who mourn in Zion,Giving them a garland instead of ashes,The oil of gladness instead of mourning,The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting.So they will be called oaks of righteousness,The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.
But you will be called the priests of the Lord;You will be spoken of as ministers of our God.You will eat the wealth of nations,And in their riches you will boast.
The nations will see your righteousness,And all kings your glory;And you will be called by a new nameWhich the mouth of the Lord will designate.
It will no longer be said to you, “Forsaken,”Nor to your land will it any longer be said, “Desolate”;But you will be called, “My delight is in her,”And your land, “Married”;For the Lord delights in you,And to Him your land will be married.
And they will call them, “The holy people,The redeemed of the Lord”;And you will be called, “Sought out, a city not forsaken.”
We have become like those over whom You have never ruled,Like those who were not called by Your name.
I will destine you for the sword,And all of you will bow down to the slaughter.Because I called, but you did not answer;I spoke, but you did not hear.And you did evil in My sightAnd chose that in which I did not delight.”
“You will leave your name for a curse to My chosen ones,And the Lord God will slay you.But My servants will be called by another name.
So I will choose their punishmentsAnd will bring on them what they dread.Because I called, but no one answered;I spoke, but they did not listen.And they did evil in My sightAnd chose that in which I did not delight.”
