'Friends' in the Bible
Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.
A despairing man should receive loyalty from his friends,even if he abandons the fear of the Almighty.
My friends have been false like a stream, like streams in the valleys which come to an end:
“The paths of their course wind along,They go up into nothing and perish.[Your counsel is as helpful to me as a dry streambed in the heat of summer.]
“If he is snatched from his place [in the garden],Then his place will forget him, saying, ‘I have never seen you.’
I am a laughingstock to my friends,by calling on God, who answers me.The righteous and upright man is a laughingstock.
My friends scorn me: but mine eye poureth out tears unto God.
He that speaketh flattery to his friends, even the eyes of his children shall fail.
My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me.
All my inward friends abhorred me: and they whom I loved are turned against me.
Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends; for the hand of God hath touched me.
For all of them, the morning is to them like deep darkness; they are friends with the terrors of darkness.
may thorns spring up instead of wheat, and obnoxious weeds instead of barley." With this, Job's discourse with his friends is completed.
Also against his three friends was his wrath kindled, because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.
Job’s friends are dismayed and can no longer answer;words have left them.
I will answer youand your friends with you.
Will your business be able to buy him, Will you divide him among your merchant friends?
And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends: for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath.
And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.
And all his brothers and sisters, and his friends of earlier days, came and took food with him in his house; and made clear their grief for him, and gave him comfort for all the evil which the Lord had sent on him; and they all gave him a bit of money and a gold ring.
