'Investigation' in the Bible

And when a man lieth with a woman with seed of copulation, and she a maid-servant, betrothed to a man, and not really ransomed, or freedom hath not been given to her, an investigation there is; they are not put to death, for she is not free.

The judges are to make a careful investigation, and if the witness turns out to be a liar who has falsely accused his brother,

They said to each other, “Who did this?” After they made a thorough investigation, they said, “Gideon son of Joash did it.”
