'Lawful' in the Bible
A man was there who had a withered hand. And they asked Jesus, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?" so that they could accuse him.
How much more valuable is a person than a sheep! So it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath."
because John had repeatedly told him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."
Then some Pharisees came to him in order to test him. They asked, "Is it lawful to divorce a wife for any cause?"

So Jesus asked the experts in religious law and the Pharisees, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?"
and are advocating customs that are not lawful for us to accept or practice, since we are Romans."
"All things are lawful for me" -- but not everything is beneficial. "All things are lawful for me" -- but I will not be controlled by anything.
"Everything is lawful," but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is lawful," but not everything builds others up.
