'Long' in the Bible
Then I said, “Lord, how long?” And He answered,“Until cities are devastated and without inhabitant,Houses are without peopleAnd the land is utterly desolate,
And you made a reservoir between the two wallsFor the waters of the old pool. But you did not depend on Him who made it,Nor did you take into consideration Him who planned it long ago.
O Lord, You are my God;I will exalt You, I will give thanks to Your name; For You have worked wonders,Plans formed long ago, with perfect faithfulness.
Therefore the Lord longs to be gracious to you,And therefore He waits on high to have compassion on you.For the Lord is a God of justice; How blessed are all those who long for Him.
For Topheth has long been ready,Indeed, it has been prepared for the king.He has made it deep and large,A pyre of fire with plenty of wood; The breath of the Lord, like a torrent of brimstone, sets it afire.
“Have you not heard?Long ago I did it,From ancient times I planned it.Now I have brought it to pass,That you should turn fortified cities into ruinous heaps.
“I have kept silent for a long time,I have kept still and restrained Myself. Now like a woman in labor I will groan,I will both gasp and pant.
‘Do not tremble and do not be afraid;Have I not long since announced it to you and declared it?And you are My witnesses. Is there any God besides Me,Or is there any other Rock?I know of none.’”
“Declare and set forth your case;Indeed, let them consult together.Who has announced this from of old?Who has long since declared it?Is it not I, the Lord? And there is no other God besides Me,A righteous God and a Savior; There is none except Me.
“Remember the former things long past,For I am God, and there is no other;I am God, and there is no one like Me,
“I declared the former things long agoAnd they went forth from My mouth, and I proclaimed them.Suddenly I acted, and they came to pass.
Therefore I declared them to you long ago,Before they took place I proclaimed them to you,So that you would not say, ‘My idol has done them,And my graven image and my molten image have commanded them.’
“They are created now and not long ago;And before today you have not heard them,So that you will not say, ‘Behold, I knew them.’
“You have not heard, you have not known.Even from long ago your ear has not been open,Because I knew that you would deal very treacherously; And you have been called a rebel from birth.
Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the Lord;Awake as in the days of old, the generations of long ago.Was it not You who cut Rahab in pieces,Who pierced the dragon?
That you have forgotten the Lord your Maker,Who stretched out the heavensAnd laid the foundations of the earth,That you fear continually all day long because of the fury of the oppressor,As he makes ready to destroy? But where is the fury of the oppressor?
Now therefore, what do I have here,” declares the Lord, “seeing that My people have been taken away without cause?” Again the Lord declares, “Those who rule over them howl, and My name is continually blasphemed all day long.
“Of whom were you worried and fearfulWhen you lied, and did not remember MeNor give Me a thought? Was I not silent even for a long timeSo you do not fear Me?
You meet him who rejoices in doing righteousness,Who remembers You in Your ways.Behold, You were angry, for we sinned,We continued in them a long time; And shall we be saved?
“I have spread out My hands all day long to a rebellious people,Who walk in the way which is not good, following their own thoughts,
