'Tongue' in the Bible

Then Moses said to the Lord, “Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither recently nor in time past, nor since You have spoken to Your servant; for I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.”

So he brought the people down to the water. And the Lord said to Gideon, “You shall separate everyone who laps the water with his tongue as a dog laps, as well as everyone who kneels to drink.”

“The Spirit of the Lord spoke by me,And His word was on my tongue.

“You will be hidden from the scourge of the tongue,And you will not be afraid of violence when it comes.

“Is there injustice on my tongue?Cannot my palate discern calamities?

“Though evil is sweet in his mouthAnd he hides it under his tongue,

“He sucks the poison of cobras;The viper’s tongue slays him.

My lips certainly will not speak unjustly,Nor will my tongue mutter deceit.

The voice of the nobles was hushed,And their tongue stuck to their palate.

“Behold now, I open my mouth,My tongue in my mouth speaks.

“Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook?Or press down his tongue with a cord?

There is nothing reliable in what they say;Their inward part is destruction itself.Their throat is an open grave;They flatter with their tongue.

His mouth is full of curses and deceit and oppression;Under his tongue is mischief and wickedness.

May the Lord cut off all flattering lips,The tongue that speaks great things;

Who have said, “With our tongue we will prevail;Our lips are our own; who is lord over us?”

He does not slander with his tongue,Nor does evil to his neighbor,Nor takes up a reproach against his friend;

My strength is dried up like a potsherd,And my tongue cleaves to my jaws;And You lay me in the dust of death.

Keep your tongue from evilAnd your lips from speaking deceit.

And my tongue shall declare Your righteousnessAnd Your praise all day long.

The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom,And his tongue speaks justice.

For the choir director, for Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.I said, “I will guard my waysThat I may not sin with my tongue;I will guard my mouth as with a muzzleWhile the wicked are in my presence.”

My heart was hot within me,While I was musing the fire burned;Then I spoke with my tongue:

For the choir director; according to the Shoshannim. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. A Song of Love.My heart overflows with a good theme;I address my verses to the King;My tongue is the pen of a ready writer.

“You let your mouth loose in evilAnd your tongue frames deceit.

Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation;Then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness.

Your tongue devises destruction,Like a sharp razor, O worker of deceit.

You love all words that devour,O deceitful tongue.

My soul is among lions;I must lie among those who breathe forth fire,Even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrowsAnd their tongue a sharp sword.

Who have sharpened their tongue like a sword.They aimed bitter speech as their arrow,

So they will make him stumble;Their own tongue is against them;All who see them will shake the head.

I cried to Him with my mouth,And He was extolled with my tongue.

That your foot may shatter them in blood,The tongue of your dogs may have its portion from your enemies.”

My tongue also will utter Your righteousness all day long;For they are ashamed, for they are humiliated who seek my hurt.

They have set their mouth against the heavens,And their tongue parades through the earth.

But they deceived Him with their mouthAnd lied to Him with their tongue.

For they have opened the wicked and deceitful mouth against me;They have spoken against me with a lying tongue.

Let my tongue sing of Your word,For all Your commandments are righteousness.

Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips,From a deceitful tongue.

What shall be given to you, and what more shall be done to you,You deceitful tongue?

Then our mouth was filled with laughterAnd our tongue with joyful shouting;Then they said among the nations,“The Lord has done great things for them.”

May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouthIf I do not remember you,If I do not exalt JerusalemAbove my chief joy.

Even before there is a word on my tongue,Behold, O Lord, You know it all.

Haughty eyes, a lying tongue,And hands that shed innocent blood,

Truthful lips will be established forever,But a lying tongue is only for a moment.

The tongue of the wise makes knowledge acceptable,But the mouth of fools spouts folly.

A soothing tongue is a tree of life,But perversion in it crushes the spirit.

The plans of the heart belong to man,But the answer of the tongue is from the Lord.

An evildoer listens to wicked lips;A liar pays attention to a destructive tongue.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue,And those who love it will eat its fruit.

The acquisition of treasures by a lying tongueIs a fleeting vapor, the pursuit of death.

He who guards his mouth and his tongue,Guards his soul from troubles.

By forbearance a ruler may be persuaded,And a soft tongue breaks the bone.

The north wind brings forth rain,And a backbiting tongue, an angry countenance.

A lying tongue hates those it crushes,And a flattering mouth works ruin.

He who rebukes a man will afterward find more favorThan he who flatters with the tongue.

She opens her mouth in wisdom,And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.

“Your lips, my bride, drip honey;Honey and milk are under your tongue,And the fragrance of your garments is like the fragrance of Lebanon.

Therefore, as a tongue of fire consumes stubbleAnd dry grass collapses into the flame,So their root will become like rot and their blossom blow away as dust;For they have rejected the law of the Lord of hostsAnd despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

And the Lord will utterly destroyThe tongue of the Sea of Egypt;And He will wave His hand over the RiverWith His scorching wind;And He will strike it into seven streamsAnd make men walk over dry-shod.

Indeed, He will speak to this peopleThrough stammering lips and a foreign tongue,

Behold, the name of the Lord comes from a remote place;Burning is His anger and dense is His smoke;His lips are filled with indignationAnd His tongue is like a consuming fire;

The mind of the hasty will discern the truth,And the tongue of the stammerers will hasten to speak clearly.

You will no longer see a fierce people,A people of unintelligible speech which no one comprehends,Of a stammering tongue which no one understands.

Then the lame will leap like a deer,And the tongue of the mute will shout for joy.For waters will break forth in the wildernessAnd streams in the Arabah.

“The afflicted and needy are seeking water, but there is none,And their tongue is parched with thirst;I, the Lord, will answer them Myself,As the God of Israel I will not forsake them.

“I have sworn by Myself,The word has gone forth from My mouth in righteousnessAnd will not turn back,That to Me every knee will bow, every tongue will swear allegiance.

The Lord God has given Me the tongue of disciples,That I may know how to sustain the weary one with a word.He awakens Me morning by morning,He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple.

“No weapon that is formed against you will prosper;And every tongue that accuses you in judgment you will condemn.This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord,And their vindication is from Me,” declares the Lord.

“Against whom do you jest?Against whom do you open wide your mouthAnd stick out your tongue?Are you not children of rebellion,Offspring of deceit,

For your hands are defiled with bloodAnd your fingers with iniquity;Your lips have spoken falsehood,Your tongue mutters wickedness.

“They bend their tongue like their bow;Lies and not truth prevail in the land;For they proceed from evil to evil,And they do not know Me,” declares the Lord.

“Everyone deceives his neighborAnd does not speak the truth,They have taught their tongue to speak lies;They weary themselves committing iniquity.

“Their tongue is a deadly arrow;It speaks deceit;With his mouth one speaks peace to his neighbor,But inwardly he sets an ambush for him.

Then they said, “Come and let us devise plans against Jeremiah. Surely the law is not going to be lost to the priest, nor counsel to the sage, nor the divine word to the prophet! Come on and let us strike at him with our tongue, and let us give no heed to any of his words.”

The tongue of the infant cleavesTo the roof of its mouth because of thirst;The little ones ask for bread,But no one breaks it for them.

Moreover, I will make your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth so that you will be mute and cannot be a man who rebukes them, for they are a rebellious house.

Therefore I make a decree that any people, nation or tongue that speaks anything offensive against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego shall be torn limb from limb and their houses reduced to a rubbish heap, inasmuch as there is no other god who is able to deliver in this way.”

They turn, but not upward,They are like a deceitful bow;Their princes will fall by the swordBecause of the insolence of their tongue.This will be their derision in the land of Egypt.

“For the rich men of the city are full of violence,Her residents speak lies,And their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.

“The remnant of Israel will do no wrongAnd tell no lies,Nor will a deceitful tongueBe found in their mouths;For they will feed and lie downWith no one to make them tremble.”

Now this will be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the peoples who have gone to war against Jerusalem; their flesh will rot while they stand on their feet, and their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongue will rot in their mouth.

Jesus took him aside from the crowd, by himself, and put His fingers into his ears, and after spitting, He touched his tongue with the saliva;

And his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was removed, and he began speaking plainly.

And at once his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he began to speak in praise of God.

And he cried out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.’

‘Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue exulted;Moreover my flesh also will live in hope;

For it is written,“As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me,And every tongue shall give praise to God.”

For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries.

One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church.

So also you, unless you utter by the tongue speech that is clear, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air.

Therefore let one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.

For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.

however, in the church I desire to speak five words with my mind so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.

What is the outcome then, brethren? When you assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.

If anyone speaks in a tongue, it should be by two or at the most three, and each in turn, and one must interpret;

and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
