Rehoboam Reigns In Judah

²² Judah did what was evil in the Lord’s eyes. They provoked Him to jealous anger more than all that their ancestors had done with the sins they committed. ²³ They also built for themselves high places, sacred pillars, and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every green tree; ²⁴ there were even male cult prostitutes in the land. They imitated all the detestable practices of the nations the Lord had dispossessed before the Israelites.

Deuteronomy 12:2

Destroy completely all the places where the nations that you are driving out worship their gods—on the high mountains, on the hills, and under every green tree.

2 Kings 17:9-10

The Israelites secretly did what was not right against the Lord their God. They built high places in all their towns from watchtower to fortified city.

However, the people were sacrificing on the high places, because until that time a temple for the Lord’s name had not been built.

1 Kings 14:15

For the Lord will strike Israel and the people will shake as a reed shakes in water. He will uproot Israel from this good soil that He gave to their ancestors. He will scatter them beyond the Euphrates because they made their Asherah poles, provoking the Lord.

2 Kings 21:3-7

He rebuilt the high places that his father Hezekiah had destroyed and reestablished the altars for Baal. He made an Asherah, as King Ahab of Israel had done; he also worshiped the whole heavenly host and served them.

2 Chronicles 28:4

Jeremiah 2:20

For long ago I broke your yoke;
I tore off your chains.
