1 O Israel, return unto the LORD thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity.

1 (a)(A)Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God,For you have stumbled (b)because of your (B)iniquity.

1 Israel, return to Yahweh your God,(A)for you have stumbled in your sin.(B)

1 "Return, Israel, to the LORD your God, for you have fallen due to your own iniquity.

1 O Israel, return [in repentance] to the Lord your God,For you have stumbled and fallen [visited by tragedy], because of your sin.

2 Take with you words, and turn to the LORD: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves of our lips.

2 Take words with you and return to the Lord.Say to Him, “(C)Take away all iniquityAnd (c)receive us graciously,That we may (D)present (d)the fruit of our lips.

2 Take words of repentance with you(C)and return to the Lord.Say to Him: “Forgive all our sinand accept what is good,so that we may repay Youwith praise(a) from our(b) lips.(D)

2 Bring a prepared speech with you as you return to the LORD. Say to him: "Take away all our iniquity, and accept what is good. Then we will present the fruit of our lips.

2 Take the words [confessing your guilt] with you and return to the Lord.Say to Him, “Take away all our wickedness;Accept what is good and receive us graciously,So that we may present the fruit of our lips (gratitude).(A)

3 Asshur shall not save us; we will not ride upon horses: neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, Ye are our gods: for in thee the fatherless findeth mercy.

3 “Assyria will not save us,We will (E)not ride on horses;Nor will we say again, ‘(F)Our god,’To the (G)work of our hands;For in (H)You the (e)orphan finds mercy.”

3 Assyria will not save us,(E)we will not ride on horses,(F)and we will no longer proclaim, ‘Our gods!’(G)to the work of our hands.(H)For the fatherless receives compassion in You.”(I)

3 Assyria won't save us; we won't be riding on horses, Nor will we be saying anymore to the work of our hands, "You are our God." Indeed, in you the orphan finds mercy.'

3 “Assyria will not save us;We will not ride on horses [relying on military might],Nor will we say again to [the idols who are] the work of our hands,‘You are our gods.’For in You [O Lord] the orphan finds love and compassion and mercy.”

A Promise Of Restoration

4 I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him.

4 I will (I)heal their apostasy,I will (J)love them freely,For My anger has (K)turned away from them.

4 I will heal their apostasy;(J)I will freely love them,(K)for My anger will have turned from him.(L)

4 "I will correct their apostasy, loving them freely, since my anger will have turned away from them.

4 I will heal their apostasy and faithlessness;I will love them freely,For My anger has turned away from Israel.

5 I will be as the dew unto Israel: he shall grow as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon.

5 I will be like the (L)dew to Israel;He will blossom like the (M)lily,And he will (f)take root like the cedars of (N)Lebanon.

5 I will be like the dew to Israel;(M)he will blossom like the lily(N)and take root like the cedars of Lebanon.(O)

5 I will be like the dew to Israel; Israel will blossom like a lily, growing roots like the cedars of Lebanon.

5 I shall be like the dew to Israel;He will blossom like the lily,And he will take root like the cedars of Lebanon.

6 His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive tree, and his smell as Lebanon.

6 His shoots will (g)sprout,And his (h)beauty will be like the (O)olive treeAnd his fragrance like the cedars of (P)Lebanon.

6 His new branches will spread,and his splendor will be like the olive tree,(P)his fragrance, like the forest of Lebanon.(Q)

6 Israel's branches will spread out, and its beauty will be like an olive tree, with its scent like that of Lebanon.

6 His shoots will sprout,And his beauty will be like the olive treeAnd his fragrance like the cedars of Lebanon.

7 They that dwell under his shadow shall return; they shall revive as the corn, and grow as the vine: the scent thereof shall be as the wine of Lebanon.

7 Those who (Q)live in his shadowWill (i)again raise (R)grain,And they will blossom like the vine.His renown will be like the wine of Lebanon.

7 The people will return and live beneath his shade.(R)They will grow grain(S)and blossom like the vine.His renown will be like the wine of Lebanon.

7 Those who live under its protection will surely return. Their grain will flourish; they will blossom like a vine, and Israel's scent will be like wine from Lebanon.

7 Those who live in his shadowWill again raise grain,And they will blossom like the vine.His renown will be like the wine of Lebanon.

8 Ephraim shall say, What have I to do any more with idols? I have heard him, and observed him: I am like a green fir tree. From me is thy fruit found.

8 O Ephraim, what more have I to do with (S)idols?It is I who answer and look after (j)you.I am like a luxuriant (T)cypress;From (U)Me comes your fruit.

8 Ephraim, why should I(c) have anything moreto do with idols?(T)It is I who answer and watch over him.I am like a flourishing pine tree;(U)your fruit comes from Me.(V)

8 "Ephraim, what have I in common with idols? I have listened and will pay attention to him. I am like a flourishing cypress; in me will your fruit be found."

8 O Ephraim, what more have I to do with idols?It is I who have answered and will care for you and watch over you.I am like a luxuriant cypress tree;With Me your fruit is found [which is to nourish you].

9 Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein.

9 (V)Whoever is wise, let him understand these things;Whoever is discerning, let him know them.For the (W)ways of the Lord are right,And the (X)righteous will walk in them,But (Y)transgressors will stumble in them.

9 Let whoever is wise(W) understand these things,and whoever is insightful recognize them.For the ways of the Lord are right,(X)and the righteous walk in them,(Y)but the rebellious stumble in them.(Z)

9 Whoever is wise, let him understand these things. Whoever is discerning, let him know them. For the ways of the LORD are right: the righteous follow his example, but the rebellious stumble in them.

9 Whoever is [spiritually] wise, let him understand these things;Whoever is [spiritually] discerning and understanding, let him know them.For the ways of the Lord are right,And the righteous will walk in them,But transgressors will stumble and fall in them.(B)
