'Cities' in the Bible

Solomon amassed chariots and horsemen. He had 1,400 chariots and 12,000 horsemen, and he stationed them in the chariot cities and with the king at Jerusalem.

“If there is famine in the land, if there is pestilence, if there is blight or mildew, if there is locust or grasshopper, if their enemies besiege them in the land of their cities, whatever plague or whatever sickness there is,

that he built the cities which Huram had given to him, and settled the sons of Israel there.

He built Tadmor in the wilderness and all the storage cities which he had built in Hamath.

He also built upper Beth-horon and lower Beth-horon, fortified cities with walls, gates and bars;

and Baalath and all the storage cities that Solomon had, and all the cities for his chariots and cities for his horsemen, and all that it pleased Solomon to build in Jerusalem, in Lebanon, and in all the land under his rule.

Now Solomon had 4,000 stalls for horses and chariots and 12,000 horsemen, and he stationed them in the chariot cities and with the king in Jerusalem.

But as for the sons of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem and built cities for defense in Judah.

Zorah, Aijalon and Hebron, which are fortified cities in Judah and in Benjamin.

He acted wisely and distributed some of his sons through all the territories of Judah and Benjamin to all the fortified cities, and he gave them food in abundance. And he sought many wives for them.

He captured the fortified cities of Judah and came as far as Jerusalem.

So Jehoshaphat grew greater and greater, and he built fortresses and store cities in Judah.

He had large supplies in the cities of Judah, and warriors, valiant men, in Jerusalem.

These are they who served the king, apart from those whom the king put in the fortified cities through all Judah.

He appointed judges in the land in all the fortified cities of Judah, city by city.

Whenever any dispute comes to you from your brethren who live in their cities, between blood and blood, between law and commandment, statutes and ordinances, you shall warn them so that they may not be guilty before the Lord, and wrath may not come on you and your brethren. Now when all this was finished, all Israel who were present went out to the cities of Judah, broke the pillars in pieces, cut down the Asherim and pulled down the high places and the altars throughout all Judah and Benjamin, as well as in Ephraim and Manasseh, until they had destroyed them all. Then all the sons of Israel returned to their cities, each to his possession.

The sons of Israel and Judah who lived in the cities of Judah also brought in the tithe of oxen and sheep, and the tithe of sacred gifts which were consecrated to the Lord their God, and placed them in heaps.

Under his authority were Eden, Miniamin, Jeshua, Shemaiah, Amariah and Shecaniah in the cities of the priests, to distribute faithfully their portions to their brothers by divisions, whether great or small,

Also for the sons of Aaron the priests who were in the pasture lands of their cities, or in each and every city, there were men who were designated by name to distribute portions to every male among the priests and to everyone genealogically enrolled among the Levites.

After these acts of faithfulness Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah and besieged the fortified cities, and thought to break into them for himself.

He made cities for himself and acquired flocks and herds in abundance, for God had given him very great wealth.

Now after this he built the outer wall of the city of David on the west side of Gihon, in the valley, even to the entrance of the Fish Gate; and he encircled the Ophel with it and made it very high. Then he put army commanders in all the fortified cities of Judah.

In the cities of Manasseh, Ephraim, Simeon, even as far as Naphtali, in their surrounding ruins,
