'Man' in the Bible
For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation.
No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light.
Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God:
And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.
Just then a man in the crowd appealed to Him. "Rabbi," he said, "tell my brother to give me a share of the inheritance."
And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?
And he said to them, Take heed and keep yourselves from all covetousness, for it is not because a man is in abundance that his life is in his possessions.
And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:
"But God said to him, "'Foolish man, this night your life is demanded from you; and these preparations--for whom shall they be?'
So is the man who stores up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”
Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.
The Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise steward [of the estate], whom his master will put in charge over his household, to give his servants their portion of food at the proper time?
But he who, without knowledge, did things for which punishment is given, will get only a small number of blows. The man to whom much is given, will have to give much; if much is given into his care, of him more will be requested.
He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none.
It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.
And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.
But they kept silent. He took the man, healed him, and sent him away.
When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;
And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.
For every man who gives himself a high place will be put down, but he who takes a low place will be lifted up.
Then he told the man who had invited him, "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, stop inviting only your friends, brothers, relatives, or rich neighbors. Otherwise, they may invite you in return and you would be repaid.
And, hearing these words, one of those who were at table with him said to him, Happy is the man who will be a guest in the kingdom of God.
Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:
If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.
And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.
What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?
And he said, A certain man had two sons:
And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.
And he said also unto his disciples, There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods.
The man replied, "A hundred jars of olive oil.' The manager told him, "Get your bill. Sit down quickly and write "50."'
Then he asked another debtor, "How much do you owe?' The man replied, "A hundred containers of wheat.' The manager told him, "Get your bill and write "80."'
The man who is honest in a very small matter is honest in a great one also; and he who is dishonest in a very small matter is dishonest in a great one also.
And if you have not been faithful in the use of that [earthly wealth] which belongs to another [whether God or man, and of which you are a trustee], who will give you that which is your own?
No man may be a servant to two masters: for he will have hate for the one and love for the other; or he will keep to the one and have no respect for the other. You may not be servants of God and of wealth.
The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.
Any man who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery."
There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:
But a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, was left at his gate.
and desiring to be filled from the crumbs that are falling from the table of the rich man; yea, also the dogs, coming, were licking his sores.
And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
"The rich man said, "Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house
"But the rich man replied, "No, father Abraham! But if someone from the dead went to them, they would repent.'
"Suppose a man among you has a servant plowing or watching sheep. Would he say to him when he comes in from the field, "Come at once and have something to eat'?
He fell on his face at Jesus' feet and thanked him. Now that man was a Samaritan.
Then he told the man, "Get up, and go home! Your faith has made you well."
And he said unto the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see it.
For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day.
And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.
Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.
On that day, a man on the housetop, whose belongings are in the house, must not come down to get them. Likewise the man who is in the field must not turn back.
Any man who makes it his object to keep his own life safe, will lose it; but whoever loses his life will preserve it.
Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man:
And there was a widow in that town, and she kept on coming to him and saying, Give me my right against the man who has done me wrong.
And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man;
I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?
I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
The official replied, "I have kept all of these since I was a young man."
But when the man heard this he became very sad, for he was extremely wealthy.
For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
But he said, Things which are not possible with man are possible with God.
And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God's sake,
Then he took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished.
And it came to pass, that as he was come nigh unto Jericho, a certain blind man sat by the way side begging:
Then Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him,
Immediately the man could see again and began to follow Jesus, glorifying God. All the people saw this and gave praise to God.
And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich.
He was trying to see who Jesus was, but he was not able because of the crowd, since he was a short man.
And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.
And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.
Then Jesus told him, "Today salvation has come to this home, because this man is also a descendant of Abraham,
For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
He said therefore, 'A certain man of birth went on to a far country, to take to himself a kingdom, and to return,
But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.
And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.
For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow.
And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow:
"So the king told those standing nearby, "Take the coin away from him and give it to the man who has the ten coins.'
[Jesus explained,] ‘I tell you that to everyone who has [because he valued his gifts from God and has used them wisely], more will be given; but from the one who does not have [because he disregarded his gifts from God], even what he has will be taken away.’
Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither.
And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him.
Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time.
Everyone falling on that stone will be broken, but the man on whom the stone comes down will be crushed to dust.
So they put a question to Him. "Rabbi," they said, "we know that you say and teach what is right and that you make no distinctions between one man and another, but teach God's way truly.
and asked him, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife but no child, the man should marry the widow and have children for his brother.
And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.
Satan, however, entered into Judas (the man called Iscariot)
And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in.
Yet look! The hand of the man who is betraying me is with me on the table!
And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed!
While Jesus was still speaking, a crowd arrived. The man called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them, and he came close to Jesus to kiss him.
But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?
But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him.
And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not.
About an hour later, another kept insisting, “This man was certainly with Him, since he’s also a Galilean.”
And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew.
Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.
They began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man subverting our nation, opposing payment of taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is the Messiah, a King.”
