3 “Will he make many supplications to you [begging to be spared]?Or will he speak soft words to you [to coax you to treat him kindly]?
3 “Will he make many supplications to you,Or will he speak to you soft words?
3 Will he make many supplications unto thee? will he speak soft words unto thee?
3 Will he beg you for mercyor speak softly to you?
3 Will he make many supplications to you, or will he beg you for mercy?
4 “Will he make a covenant or an arrangement with you? Will you take him for your servant forever?
4 “Will he make a covenant with you? Will you take him for a servant forever?
4 Will he make a covenant with thee? wilt thou take him for a servant for ever?
4 Will he try to make a deal with you, so that you may take him in servitude forever?
5 “Will you play with him as with a bird?Or will you bind him [and put him on a leash] for your maidens?
5 “Will you play with him as with a bird,Or will you bind him for your maidens?
5 Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens?
5 "Will you play with him like a pet bird? Will you put a leash on him for your little girls?
6 “Will traders bargain over him? Will they divide him up among the merchants?
6 Shall the companions make a banquet of him? shall they part him among the merchants?
6 Will traders bargain for himor divide him among the merchants?
6 Will your business be able to buy him, Will you divide him among your merchant friends?
7 “Can you fill his skin with harpoons,Or his head with fishing spears?
7 “Can you fill his skin with harpoons,Or his head with fishing spears?
7 Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons? or his head with fish spears?
7 Can you fill his hide with harpoonsor his head with fishing spears?
7 Will you fill his flesh with harpoons, or his head with lances?
9 “(c)Behold, his [assailant’s] hope and expectation [of defeating Leviathan] is false; Will not one be overwhelmed even at the sight of him?
9 Behold, the hope of him is in vain: shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him?
9 "Look! Anyone's hope to capture him will prove itself false; anyone would be terrified just by looking at him.
10 “No one is so fierce [and foolhardy] that he dares to stir up Leviathan;Who then is he who can stand before Me [or dares to contend with Me, the beast’s creator]?
10 None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me?
10 No one is fierce enough to dare to arouse him. "Who, then, can stand in my presence and face me?
11 “Who has first given to Me that I should repay him?Whatever is under the whole heaven is Mine. [Who can have a claim against Me who made the unmastered beast?](A)
11 “Who has (j)(D)given to Me that I should repay him?Whatever is (E)under the whole heaven is Mine.
11 Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine.
11 Who can take me to court and be reconciled to me? All of heaven is mine.
12 “I will not keep silence concerning his limbs,Nor his mighty strength, nor his orderly frame.
12 I will not conceal his parts, nor his power, nor his comely proportion.
12 I cannot be silent about his limbs, his power, and his graceful proportions.
12 "I won't be silent concerning his limbs, his mighty strength, and orderly frame.
14 “Who can open the doors (jaws) of his face?Around his [open jaws and] teeth there is terror.
14 “Who can open the doors of his face?Around his teeth there is terror.
14 Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible round about.
14 Who dares to open his mouth, since it is ringed with his terrible teeth!
17 “They are joined one to another; They stick together and cannot be separated.
17 “They are joined one to another; They clasp each other and cannot be separated.
17 They are joined one to another, they stick together, that they cannot be sundered.
17 Each is attached to the other, grasping each other so they cannot be separated.
19 “Out of his mouth go burning torches,And sparks of fire leap out.
19 “Out of his mouth go burning torches;Sparks of fire leap forth.
19 Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out.
19 Flaming torches shoot from his mouth;fiery sparks fly out!
19 Flames blaze from his mouth; streams of sparking fire fly out.
20 “Out of his nostrils smoke goes forthAs from a boiling pot and [as from] burning rushes.
20 “Out of his nostrils smoke goes forthAs from a boiling pot and burning rushes.
20 Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, as out of a seething pot or caldron.
20 Smoke billows from his nostrils; like a boiling pot or burning reeds.
21 “His breath kindles coals,And a flame goes forth from his mouth.
21 “His breath kindles coals,And a flame goes forth from his mouth.
21 His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth.
21 His breath sets coals ablaze, and flames pour out of his mouth.
21 His breath can ignite coal; and flames proceed from his mouth.
22 “In Leviathan’s neck resides strength,And dismay and terror dance before him.
22 “In his neck lodges strength,And dismay leaps before him.
22 In his neck remaineth strength, and sorrow is turned into joy before him.
22 Strength resides in his neck, and dismay dances before him.
22 "His neck is so powerful that all who meet him are terrified.
23 “The folds of his flesh are joined together,Firm on him and immobile [when he moves].
23 “The folds of his flesh are joined together,Firm on him and immovable.
23 The flakes of his flesh are joined together: they are firm in themselves; they cannot be moved.
23 There is no flaw in his body's armor; it is firmly fixed on him and unbreachable.
24 “His heart is as hard as a stone,Indeed, as solid as a lower millstone.
24 “His heart is as hard as a stone,Even as hard as a lower millstone.
24 His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the nether millstone.
24 His heart is as hard as a rock,as hard as a lower millstone!
24 His heart is as strong as stone, it is as hard as a lower millstone.
26 “The sword that reaches him cannot avail,Nor [does] the spear, the dart, or the javelin.
26 “The sword that reaches him cannot avail,Nor the spear, the dart or the javelin.
26 The sword of him that layeth at him cannot hold: the spear, the dart, nor the habergeon.
26 The sword that reaches him will have no effect, nor will a spear, dart, or arrow.
26 "Thrusting at him with a sword won't be effective, nor will spears, darts, or javelins.
28 “The arrow cannot make him flee;Slingstones are treated as stubble by him.
28 The arrow cannot make him flee: slingstones are turned with him into stubble.
28 No arrow can make him flee;slingstones become like stubble to him.
28 Arrows won't make him flee; stones from a sling are only pebbles to him.
29 “Clubs [also] are regarded as stubble; He laughs at the rushing and the rattling of the javelin.
29 “Clubs are regarded as stubble; He laughs at the rattling of the javelin.
29 Darts are counted as stubble: he laugheth at the shaking of a spear.
29 Clubs are like twigs; he laughs at the whoosh of the javelin.
30 “His underparts are like sharp pieces of broken pottery; He moves across and spreads out [grooves] like a threshing sledge on the mire (muddy river banks).
30 Sharp stones are under him: he spreadeth sharp pointed things upon the mire.
30 "Beneath him he is armored as with sharp potsherds; he tears through muddy ground like a threshing sledge through grain.
31 “He makes the deep water boil like a pot;He makes the sea like a [foaming] pot of ointment.
31 “He makes the depths boil like a pot;He makes the sea like a jar of ointment.
31 He maketh the deep to boil like a pot: he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment.
31 He makes the depths seethe like a cauldron;he makes the sea like an ointment jar.
31 He causes the deep to boil like water in a pot, and churns the sea like one stirs ointment.
32 “Behind him he makes a shining wake; One would think the deep to be gray-haired [with foam].
32 “Behind him he makes a wake to shine; One would think the deep to be gray-haired.
32 He maketh a path to shine after him; one would think the deep to be hoary.
32 The sea is luminescent behind him; his wake turns the sea white, like those with gray hair.
34 “He looks on everything that is high [without terror];He is monarch over all the sons of pride. [And now, Job, (d)who are you who does not dare to disturb the beast, yet who dares resist Me, the beast’s creator? Everything under the heavens is Mine; therefore, who can have a claim against God?]”
34 He beholdeth all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride.
34 He looks down on everything that is high; he rules over every kind of pride."
