The Israelites took their daughters as wives for themselves, gave their own daughters to their sons, and worshiped their gods.

Praise ye the LORD for the avenging of Israel, when the people willingly offered themselves.

My heart is toward the governors of Israel, that offered themselves willingly among the people. Bless ye the LORD.

and they oppressed Israel. Because of Midian, the Israelites made hiding places for themselves in the mountains, caves, and strongholds.

There was a strong tower inside the city, and all the men, women, and lords of the city fled there. They locked themselves in and went up to the roof of the tower.

And all the men of Israel rose up out of their place, and put themselves in array at Baaltamar: and the liers in wait of Israel came forth out of their places, even out of the meadows of Gibeah.

And the liers in wait hasted, and rushed upon Gibeah; and the liers in wait drew themselves along, and smote all the city with the edge of the sword.

And the people came to Beth-el, waiting there till evening before God, and gave themselves up to bitter weeping.

The Israelis asked themselves, "Who didn't come up in our assembly in the LORD's presence from among all of the tribes of Israel?" They had taken a solemn oath concerning those who didn't come up to meet with the LORD at Mizpah that "They will certainly be executed."

And the people numbered themselves, and lo, there is not there a man of the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead.

So the men of Benjamin did this, and got wives for themselves for every one of their number, taking them away by force from the dance; then they went back to their heritage, building up their towns and living in them.

They took for themselves Moabite women as wives; the name of the one was Orpah and the name of the other Ruth. And they lived there about ten years.
