God Tests Abraham

1 Some time after these things God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am!" Abraham replied.

1 Now it came about after these things, that (A)God tested Abraham, and said to him, “(B)Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”

1 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.

1 After these things God tested Abraham(A) and said to him, “Abraham!”“Here I am,” he answered.

1 Sometime later, God tested Abraham. He called out to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am!" he answered.

2 God said, "Take your son -- your only son, whom you love, Isaac -- and go to the land of Moriah! Offer him up there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains which I will indicate to you."

2 He said, “Take now (C)your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of (D)Moriah, and offer him there as a (E)burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you.”

2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.

2 “Take your son,” He said, “your only son Isaac, whom you love,(B) go to the land of Moriah,(C) and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about.”

2 God said, "Please take your son, your unique son whom you love Isaac and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him as a burnt offering there on one of the mountains that I will point out to you."

3 Early in the morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey. He took two of his young servants with him, along with his son Isaac. When he had cut the wood for the burnt offering, he started out for the place God had spoken to him about.

3 So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him and Isaac his son; and he split wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.

3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.

3 So Abraham got up early in the morning,(D) saddled his donkey, and took with him two of his young men and his son Isaac. He split wood for a burnt offering and set out to go to the place God had told him about.

3 So Abraham got up early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his male servants with him, along with his son Isaac. He cut the wood for the burnt offering and set out to go to the place about which God had spoken to him.

4 On the third day Abraham caught sight of the place in the distance.

4 On the third day Abraham raised his eyes and saw the place from a distance.

4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.

4 On the third day(E) Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.

4 On the third day he looked ahead and saw the place from a distance.

5 So he said to his servants, "You two stay here with the donkey while the boy and I go up there. We will worship and then return to you."

5 Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey, and I and the lad will go over there; and we will worship and return to you.”

5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.

5 Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there to worship; then we’ll come back to you.”

5 Abraham ordered his two servants, "Both of you are to stay here with the donkey. Now as for the youth and me, we'll go up there, we'll worship, and then we'll return to you."

6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and put it on his son Isaac. Then he took the fire and the knife in his hand, and the two of them walked on together.

6 Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and (F)laid it on Isaac his son, and he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So the two of them walked on together.

6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.

6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and laid it on his son Isaac.(F) In his hand he took the fire and the sacrificial knife,(a) and the two of them walked on together.

6 Then Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac. Abraham carried the fire and the knife. And so the two of them went on together.

7 Isaac said to his father Abraham, "My father?" "What is it, my son?" he replied. "Here is the fire and the wood," Isaac said, "but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?"

7 Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” And he said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the (G)lamb for the burnt offering?”

7 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?

7 Then Isaac spoke to his father Abraham and said, “My father.”And he replied, “Here I am, my son.”Isaac said, “The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”

7 Isaac addressed his father Abraham: "My father!" "I'm here, my son," Abraham replied. Isaac asked, "The fire and the wood are here, but where's the lamb for the burnt offering?"

8 "God will provide for himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son," Abraham replied. The two of them continued on together.

8 Abraham said, “God will (a)provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” So the two of them walked on together.

8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.

8 Abraham answered, “God Himself will provide(b)(G) the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” Then the two of them walked on together.

8 Abraham answered, "God will provide himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son."

9 When they came to the place God had told him about, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood on it. Next he tied up his son Isaac and placed him on the altar on top of the wood.

9 Then they came to (H)the place of which God had told him; and Abraham built (I)the altar there and arranged the wood, and bound his son Isaac and (J)laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.

9 And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.

9 When they arrived at the place that God had told him about, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood. He bound his son Isaac(c) and placed him on the altar(H) on top of the wood.

9 The two of them went on together and came to the place about which God had spoken. Abraham built an altar there, arranged the wood, tied up his son Isaac, and placed him on the altar on top of the wood.

10 Then Abraham reached out his hand, took the knife, and prepared to slaughter his son.

10 Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.

10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.

10 Then Abraham reached out and took the knife to slaughter his son.

10 Then he stretched out his hand and grabbed the knife to slaughter his son.

11 But the Lord's angel called to him from heaven, "Abraham! Abraham!" "Here I am!" he answered.

11 But (K)the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”

11 And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.

11 But the Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!”He replied, “Here I am.”

11 Just then, an angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven and said, "Abraham! Abraham!" "Here I am," he answered.

12 "Do not harm the boy!" the angel said. "Do not do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God because you did not withhold your son, your only son, from me."

12 He said, “Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now (L)I know that you (b)fear God, since you have not withheld (M)your son, your only son, from Me.”

12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.

12 Then He said, “Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your only son from Me.”(I)

12 "Don't lay your hand on the youth!" he said. "Don't do anything to him, because I've just demonstrated that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only unique one, from me."

13 Abraham looked up and saw behind him a ram caught in the bushes by its horns. So he went over and got the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.

13 Then Abraham raised his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns; and Abraham went and took the ram and offered him up for a burnt offering in the place of his son.

13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.

13 Abraham looked up and saw a ram(d) caught in the thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son.

13 Then Abraham looked up and behind him to see a ram caught by its horns in the thicket. So Abraham went over, grabbed the ram, and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son.

14 And Abraham called the name of that place "The Lord provides." It is said to this day, "In the mountain of the Lord provision will be made."

14 Abraham called the name of that place (c)The Lord Will Provide, as it is said to this day, “In the mount of the Lord (N)it will (d)be provided.”

14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.

14 And Abraham named that place The Lord Will Provide,(e) so today it is said: “It will be provided(f) on the Lord’s mountain.”

14 Abraham named that place, "The LORD Will Provide," as it is told this day, "On the LORD's mountain, he will provide."

The Lord's Seventh Promise To Abraham

15 The Lord's angel called to Abraham a second time from heaven

15 Then the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven,

15 And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,

15 Then the Angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven

15 The angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven

16 and said, "'I solemnly swear by my own name,' decrees the Lord, 'that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,

16 and said, “(O)By Myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son,

16 And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:

16 and said, “By Myself I have sworn,”(J) this is the Lord’s declaration: “Because you have done this thing and have not withheld your only son,(g)

16 and said, "I have taken an oath to swear by myself," declares the LORD, "that since you have carried this out and have not withheld your only unique son,

17 I will indeed bless you, and I will greatly multiply your descendants so that they will be as countless as the stars in the sky or the grains of sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the strongholds of their enemies.

17 indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly (P)multiply your (e)seed as the stars of the heavens and as (Q)the sand which is on the seashore; and (R)your (f)seed shall possess the gate of (g)their enemies.

17 That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;

17 I will indeed bless you(K) and make your offspring as numerous as the stars of the sky(L) and the sand on the seashore.(M) Your offspring will possess the gates of their enemies.(N)

17 I will certainly bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in heaven and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the gates of their enemies.

18 Because you have obeyed me, all the nations of the earth will pronounce blessings on one another using the name of your descendants.'"

18 (S)In your (h)seed all the nations of the earth shall (i)be blessed, because you have (T)obeyed My voice.”

18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

18 And all the nations of the earth will be blessed(h) by your offspring(O) because you have obeyed My command.”

18 Furthermore, through your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed my command."

19 Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set out together for Beer Sheba where Abraham stayed.

19 (U)So Abraham returned to his young men, and they arose and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham lived at Beersheba.

19 So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.

19 Abraham went back to his young men, and they got up and went together to Beer-sheba. And Abraham settled in Beer-sheba.

19 After this, Abraham returned to his servants and they set out together for Beer-sheba, where Abraham settled.

Rebekah's Family

20 After these things Abraham was told, "Milcah also has borne children to your brother Nahor --

20 Now it came about after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, “Behold, (V)Milcah (j)also has borne children to your brother Nahor:

20 And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah, she hath also born children unto thy brother Nahor;

20 Now after these things Abraham was told, “Milcah also has borne sons to your brother Nahor:(P)

20 Now after these things somebody told Abraham, "Look, Milcah has given birth to sons for your brother Nahor.

21 Uz the firstborn, his brother Buz, Kemuel (the father of Aram),

21 Uz his firstborn and Buz his brother and Kemuel the father of Aram

21 Huz his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram,

21 Uz his firstborn, his brother Buz, Kemuel the father of Aram,

21 Uz is his firstborn, Buz is his brother, and Kemuel is the father of Aram,

22 Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel."

22 and Chesed and Hazo and Pildash and Jidlaph and Bethuel.”

22 And Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel.

22 Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.”

22 Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel."

23 (Now Bethuel became the father of Rebekah.) These were the eight sons Milcah bore to Abraham's brother Nahor.

23 Bethuel (k)became the father of (W)Rebekah; these eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham’s brother.

23 And Bethuel begat Rebekah: these eight Milcah did bear to Nahor, Abraham's brother.

23 And Bethuel fathered Rebekah.(Q) Milcah bore these eight to Nahor, Abraham’s brother.

23 Bethuel fathered Rebekah. Milcah bore these eight sons to Nahor, Abraham's brother.

24 His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore him children -- Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.

24 His concubine, whose name was Reumah, (l)also bore Tebah and Gaham and Tahash and Maacah.

24 And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she bare also Tebah, and Gaham, and Thahash, and Maachah.

24 His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.

24 Also, his concubine Reumah gave birth to Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.
