Jesus left there and went into their [i.e., the Pharisees'] synagogues,

Then spake Jesus to the multitudes and to his disciples, saying, The scribes and Pharisees sit in the chair of Moses:

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

Likewise the chief priests also mocking, with the scribes, the Pharisees, and the elders, said,

And it happened that he was reclining at table in his house; and many publicans and sinners were reclining with Jesus and his disciples; for there were many, and scribes of the Pharisees were also following him.

The Pharisees were watching Jesus closely to see if He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him [in the Jewish high court].

Then He said to the Pharisees, "Is it permissible by the law of Moses to do something good, or something harmful on the Sabbath day? To save a life or to kill it?" But they did not reply.

And they asked him, saying, How is it that the Pharisees and scribes say that Elijah must come first?

When he was come to the other disciples, he found a great crowd about them, and the Pharisees disputing with them.

the Scribes and Pharisees upon hearing this consulted together how to destroy him; but they stood in awe of him, because all the people were strangely affected with his doctrine.

As Jesus was teaching in the Temple, He responded [to some Pharisees. See Matt. 22:41] by asking, "How is it that the experts in the law of Moses can say that the Christ is the son of David?

And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.

But the experts in the law of Moses and the Pharisees became furious and began discussing among themselves what they could do to Jesus.

And lo! a woman who was in the city, a sinner, learning that he was at table in the Pharisees house, brought an alabasterbottle of ointment,

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them.

Afterwards some of the Pharisees, who deny there is any resurrection, accosted him with this question,

Then certain of the Pharisees answered and said, "Master, thou hast well said."

And Jesus said to them [i.e., the Pharisees. See Matt. 22:41], "How is it that they [i.e., the experts in the law of Moses. See Mark 12:35] can say that the Christ [i.e., God's specially chosen one] is the son of David?

Then the officers returned to the chief priest and Pharisees,

Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.

But these Jews [i.e., Pharisees] did not believe that the man had been blind and had received his sight back until they called his parents

The Pharisees said to him, "What did he do to you? How did he restore your sight?"

The man replied, "Is not that strange! You do not know where he came from and yet he restored my sight! [Note: The next sentence may be the beggar stating the Pharisees' argument. See verse 24].

Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.

And the Pharisees, being lovers of money, were hearing all these things, and were openly mocking Him.


And they send to Him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that Thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, and carest not for any one; for Thou dost not look into the face of men:


In the meantime, the vast multitude having been gathered together, so as to tread one upon another, He began to say to His disciples, first, "Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

"And, when ye fast, be not as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance; for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear to men to fast. Verily I say to you, they receive their reward. But, when fasting, anoint your head, and wash your face, that you appear not to men to be fasting, but to your Father Who is in secret; and your Father Who seeth in secret will recompense you.

"Hear another parable. There was a man?? householder??ho planted a vineyard, and placed a fence around it, and dug a wine-press, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went abroad. And, when the season of the fruits drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen to receive his fruits. And the husbandmen, taking his servants, one, indeed, they beat; and one they killed; and one they stoned. read more.
Again he sent other servants more than the first; and they treated them likewise. But afterward he sent to them his son, saying, 'They will reverence my son.' But the husbandmen, seeing the son, said among themselves, 'This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and have his inheritance!' And, taking him, they cast him forth out of the vineyard, and killed him. When, therefore, the lord of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those husband-men?" They say to Him, "He will miserably destroy those miserable men, and will let out the vineyard to other husbandmen, who will render to him the fruits in their seasons." Jesus saith to them, "Did ye never read in the Scriptures, 'The stone which the builders rejected, the same was made head of a corner; this was from the Lord, and it is marvellous in our eyes?' "Therefore, I say to you, the Kingdom of God shall be taken away from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruit thereof. And he who falls on this stone shall be broken in pieces; but on whomsoever it falls, it will scatter him as dust." And the high-priests and Pharisees, having heard His parables, knew that He was speaking concerning them. And, while seeking to lay hold on Him, they feared the multitudes, since they were holding Him as a prophet.

When, therefore, you are doing alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say to you, they receive their reward. But, when you are doing alms, let not your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your alms may be in secret; and your Father, Who seeth in secret, will recompense you. read more.
"And, when ye pray, ye shall not be as the hypocrites; for they love to pray, standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men: verily I say to you, they have their reward. But when you pray, enter into your closet; and, having closed your door, pray to your Father Who is in secret; and your Father Who seeth in secret will recompense you. "And, when praying, use not vain repetitions, as the gentiles do; for they think that for their much speaking they shall be heard. Be not, therefore, like them; for your Father knoweth of what things ye have need before ye ask Him.

Then there come to Jesus, from Jerusalem, Pharisees and scribes, saying, "Why do Thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they do not wash their hands, when they eat bread!" And He, answering, said to them, "Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? read more.
For God said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and 'He that speaks evil of father or mother, let him surely die,' But ye say, 'Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, That by which you might be profited by me is an offering,' shall in no wise honor his father; and ye made void the word of God because of your tradition. Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying, 'This people honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. But in vain do they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'"

And the Pharisees and Sadducees, coming near, tempting Him, asked Him to show them a sign from the heaven; and He, answering, said to them, "When it is evening, ye say, 'It will be fair, for the heaven is red;' and in the morning, 'Today, a tempest; for red is the overcast heaven.' The face of the heaven, indeed, ye know how to discern, but the signs of the times ye can not discern. read more.
An evil and adulterous generation is seeking after a sign; and no sign will be given to it, except the sign of Jonah the prophet." And, leaving them, He departed. And the disciples, coming to the other aide, forgot to take bread. And Jesus said to them, "Take heed, and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees." And they were deliberating among themselves, saying, "We took no bread." And Jesus, knowing it, said, "Why are ye deliberating among yourselves, O ye of little faith, because ye have no bread? Do ye not yet perceive, nor remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? Nor the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? How is it that ye do not perceive that I spake not to you concerning bread? but beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees? Then they understood that He did not bid them beware of the leaven of the bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

saying, "The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat. All, therefore, whatsoever they bid you, do and observe; but do not according to their works; for they say and do not. And they bind heavy burdens, and lay them upon the shoulders of men; but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger. read more.
But all their works they do with the view to be seen by men; for they make broad their phylacteries and enlarge their fringes; and they love the first place in the feasts, and the front seats in the synagogues, and the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called by men 'Rabbi.' But be not ye called Rabbi; for One is your Teacher, and all ye are brethren. And call no one your father on the earth; for One is your Father, the Heavenly. Neither be ye called leaders; because One is your Leader, the Christ. But the greater of you shall be your minister. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled; and whosoever shall humble himself shall be exalted. "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you shut up the Kingdom of Heaven against men; for ye do not enter, neither do ye suffer those who are entering in to enter. OMITTED TEXT. "Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish; but within they are full from extortion and excess! Blind Pharisees! cleanse first the inside of the cup and of the dish, that its outside also may become clean. "Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye are like white-washed sepulchres, which outwardly, indeed, appear beautiful, but within are full of bones of the dead and of all uncleanness. So ye also outwardly, indeed, appear righteous to men; but within ye are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. "Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and adorn the tombs of the righteous, and say, 'If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.' So then ye testify to yourselves that ye are sons of those who killed the prophets; and fill ye up the measure of your fathers. Serpents! broods of vipers! How can ye escape the judgment of Hell?

And He was casting out a dumb demon. And it came to pass that, when the demon went out, the dumb spake, and the multitudes marvelled. But some of them said, "By Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons, He is casting out the demons." And others, tempting, were seeking of Him a sign from heaven. read more.
But He, knowing their thoughts, said to them, "Every kingdom, divided against itself, is made desolate; and a house divided against a house falls. And, if Satan also were divided against himself, how would his kingdom stand? because ye say that by Beelzebub I am casting out the demons! But, if I, by Beelzebub, cast out the demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore, they shall be your judges. But, if I, by the finger of God, cast out the demons, then the Kingdom of God came upon you unexpectedly. "When the strong man, fully armed, is guarding his own court, his goods are in peace; but, when a stronger than he, coming upon him, overcomes him, he takes away his whole armor upon which he had relied, and distributes his spoils. He who is not with Me is against Me; and he who is not gathering with Me is scattering. "When the unclean spirit goes out from the man, it passes through waterless places, seeking rest; and, not finding it, it says, 'I will return into my house whence I came out.' And, coming, it finds it swept and decorated. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself; and, entering in, they make their abode there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first." And it came to pass, as He was saying these things, that a certain woman, out of the multitude, lifting up her voice, said to Him, "Happy the womb that carried Thee, and the breasts which Thou didst suck!" But He said, "Yea, rather, happy are those who hear the word of God, and keep it!" And as the multitudes were gathering together to Him, He began to say, "This generation is an evil generation: it is seeking a sign, and a sign shall not be given it, except the sign of Jonah. For, as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation. "The queen of the south will rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and will condemn them; because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, something more than Solomon is here. "The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation, and condemn it; because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and, behold, something more than Jonah is here. "No one, having lighted a lamp, puts it in a cellar, or under a measure, but on a lamp-stand, that those who enter may see the light. The lamp of your body is your eye. When your eye is sound, your whole body also is full of light; but, when it is evil, your body also is dark. Take heed, therefore, lest the light in you be darkness. If, therefore, your whole body be full of light, not having any part dark, it shall be wholly light, as when the lamp, with its bright shining, illuminates you." Now, as He spake, a Pharisee asks Him to dine with him; and, entering, He reclined at table. And the Pharisee, seeing it, marvelled that He was not first immersed before breakfast. But the Lord said to him, "Now ye, the Pharisees, cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish; but your inward part is full of extortion and wickedness. Senseless ones! Did not He who made the outside make the inside also? But give as alms the things within; and, behold, all things are clean to you. "But woe to you Pharisees! because ye tithe the mint, and the rue, and every herb; but ye pass by judgment and the love of God. Now these things it was needful to do, and not to leave those undone. "Woe to you Pharisees! because ye love the first seats in the synagogues, and the salutations in the marketplaces! Woe to you! because ye are as the unobserved tombs; and the men, walking over them, know it not." And one of the lawyers, answering, says to Him, "Teacher, in saying these things, Thou insultest us also!" And He said, "Woe to you lawyers, also! because ye burden men with burdens hard to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers! "Woe to you! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. Consequently, ye are witnesses, and consent to the works of your fathers; because they, indeed, killed them, and ye build their tombs. On this account also the wisdom of God said, 'I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them will they slay, and some will they persecute; that the blood of all the prophets, which has been shed from the founding of the world, may be required of this generation??51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zachariah who perished between the altar and the house??ea, I say to you, it shall be required of this generation.' "Woe to you lawyers; because ye took away the Key of Knowledge; ye yourselves entered not in, and those who were entering ye hindered." And, when He went forth thence, the scribes and Pharisees began vehemently to press upon Him, and to urge Him to speak concerning many things; lying in wait for Him, to catch something out of His mouth.

Now all the tax collectors and sinners were drawing near to Him to hear Him. And both the scribes and the Pharisees were murmuring, saying, "This Man receiveth sinners and eateth with them!" And He spake to them this parable, saying, read more.
"What man of you, having a hundred sheep, and losing one of them, does not leave behind the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after the lost one, until he finds it? And, finding it, he places it upon his shoulders, rejoicing: and, coming to his house, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying, Rejoice with me, because I found my sheep, which was lost. I say to you, that so there will be joy in Heaven over one sinner that repents, more than over ninety-nine righteous men who have no need of repentance. "Or what woman, having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, does not light a lamp, and sweep the house, and seek diligently, till she finds it? And, having found it, she calls together her female friends and neighbors, saying, 'Rejoice with me; because I found the piece which I lost!'


Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered Him, saying, "Teacher, we wish to see a sign from Thee." And He, answering, said to them, "An evil and adulterous generation is seeking after a sign; and no sign shall be given to it, except the sign of Jonah the prophet.

Then, His disciples, coming near, say to Him, "Knowest Thou that the Pharisees, having heard the saying, were made to stumble?"

Did any one of the rulers believe on Him, or of the Pharisees?


and he says, "I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, having been trained according to the exactness of the ancestral law, being zealous for God, even as ye all are to-day;

Now there was a man of the Pharisees, whose name was Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

But there rose up some from the sect of the Pharisees, who believed, saying, "It is necessary to circumcise them, and to charge them to keep the law of Moses."


Then there come to Jesus, from Jerusalem, Pharisees and scribes, saying, "Why do Thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they do not wash their hands, when they eat bread!" And He, answering, said to them, "Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?

And there gather together to Him the Pharisees, and some of the scribes, who came from Jerusalem, and saw that some of His disciples ate bread with defiled, that is, unwashed hands. For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, unless they wash their hands thoroughly, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders; read more.
and, coming from the marketplace, unless they immerse themselves, they do not eat; and there are many other things which they received to hold; as, immersion of cups, and pots, and brazen vessels. And the Pharisees and the scribes ask Him, "Why do not Thy disciples walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?" And He said to them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy concerning you hypocrites, as it has been written, This people honor me with their lips; but their heart is far from Me. But in vain do they worship Me, teaching as their doctrines the precepts of men. Having left the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men." And He said to them, "Well do ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may hold your tradition! For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and 'He that speaks evil of father or mother, let him surely die.' But ye say, 'If a man say to his father or mother, That wherewith you might be profited by me is Corban,' that is, 'an offering to God,' ye no longer suffer him to do anything for his father or his mother; making void the word of God by your tradition, which ye handed down; and many such things ye do." And, again calling the multitude, He said to them, "Hear Me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing from without the man, that, entering into him, can defile him; but the things proceeding out of the man are those that defile the man."


And it came to pass, when He went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees on a sabbath to eat bread, that they were watching Him.

And one of the Pharisees was asking Him to eat with him; and, having entered into the Pharisee's house, He reclined at table.

Now, as He spake, a Pharisee asks Him to dine with him; and, entering, He reclined at table.


Then came to Him the disciples of John, saying, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Thy disciples fast not?"

I fast twice on the Sabbath; I give a tenth of all that I acquire.'


And the Pharisees came to Him, tempting Him, and saying, "Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause"

Then the Pharisees, going, took counsel how they might ensnare Him in speech. And they send to Him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that Thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, and carest not for any one; for Thou dost not look into the face of men: tell us, therefore, what thinkest Thou: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar or not?" read more.
But Jesus, knowing their wickedness, said, "Why are ye tempting Me, hypocrites? Show me the tribute-coin." And they brought Him a denary. And He saith to them, "Whose is this image and inscription?" They say to Him, "Caesar's." Then saith He to them, "Render, therefore, the things of Caesar to Caesar, and the things of God to God." And, hearing it, they wondered: and, leaving Him, they went away.


And Paul, perceiving that the one part was of the Sadducees, and the other of the Pharisees, was crying out in the Sanhedrin, "Brethren, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees; concerning the hope and resurrection from the dead, I am being judged."

having known me from the beginning, if they were willing to testify, that according to the strictest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.


And the Pharisees, seeing it, said to His disciples, Why is your Teacher eating with the tax-collectors and sinners?" And Jesus, hearing it, said, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are ill. But, going, learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, and not sacrifice;' for I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners."


For God said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and 'He that speaks evil of father or mother, let him surely die,' But ye say, 'Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, That by which you might be profited by me is an offering,' shall in no wise honor his father; and ye made void the word of God because of your tradition. read more.

But the Pharisees, seeing it, said to Him, "Behold, Thy disciples are doing that which it is not lawful to do on a sabbath." But He said to them, "Did ye not read what David did, when he was hungry, and those with him? how he entered into the house of God, and ate the showbread, which it was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those with him, but only for the priests? read more.
Or did ye not read in the law that, on the sabbath, the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are guiltless? But I say to you, a greater than the temple is here. And, if ye had known what this means, 'I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,' ye would not have condemned the guiltless; for the Son of Man is Lord of the sabbath."


But, seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his immersion, he said to them, "Broods of vipers! who warned you to flee from the coming wrath! Produce, therefore, fruit worthy of repentance; and think not to say within yourselves, 'As a father we have Abraham;' for I say to you, that God is able out of these stones to raise up children to Abraham. read more.
And already the axe is lying at the root of the trees; every tree, therefore, not bearing good fruit, is cut down, and cast into the fire.


And Paul, perceiving that the one part was of the Sadducees, and the other of the Pharisees, was crying out in the Sanhedrin, "Brethren, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees; concerning the hope and resurrection from the dead, I am being judged."

For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees acknowledge both.


But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the counsel of God as to themselves, not having been immersed by him.


But in vain do they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'"


But there rose up some from the sect of the Pharisees, who believed, saying, "It is necessary to circumcise them, and to charge them to keep the law of Moses."


And, while seeking to lay hold on Him, they feared the multitudes, since they were holding Him as a prophet.

But the Pharisees, having gone out, held a consultation against Him, that they might destroy Him.

The high priests, therefore, and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, "What are we doing? because This Man is doing many signs.

From that day, therefore, they took counsel, that they might put Him to death.

Now the high priests and the Pharisees had given orders, that, if any one knew where He was, he should show it, that they might seize Him.


And the Pharisees came to Him, tempting Him, and saying, "Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause"

and one of them, a lawyer, asked a question, tempting Him:

and was making progress in Judaism above many companions of the same age in my own nation, being more exceedingly a zealot for my ancestral instructions.

And the Pharisees and the scribes ask Him, "Why do not Thy disciples walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?" And He said to them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy concerning you hypocrites, as it has been written, This people honor me with their lips; but their heart is far from Me. But in vain do they worship Me, teaching as their doctrines the precepts of men. read more.
Having left the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men."


But, seeing it, the Pharisee who invited Him, spake in himself, saying, "This Man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what sort of woman this is that is touching Him, because she is a sinner."

And the Pharisees, seeing it, said to His disciples, Why is your Teacher eating with the tax-collectors and sinners?"

Now all the tax collectors and sinners were drawing near to Him to hear Him. And both the scribes and the Pharisees were murmuring, saying, "This Man receiveth sinners and eateth with them!"


And Jesus said to them, "Take heed, and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

How is it that ye do not perceive that I spake not to you concerning bread? but beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees? Then they understood that He did not bid them beware of the leaven of the bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.


But a certain one, having risen up in the council?? Pharisee, by name Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, honored by all the people??rdered to put the men without a little while.

And there arose a great clamor, and some of the scribes of the party of the Pharisees, rising up, were fiercely contending, saying, "We find no evil in this man; but, if a spirit spake to him, or an angel ??"

Now there was a man of the Pharisees, whose name was Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.


The Pharisee, having taken his stand, was praying these things with himself: 'God, I thank Thee that I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax-collector!

circumcised the eighth day, of the race of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, persecuting the assembly: as to the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.


Blind guides! straining out the gnat, and swallowing the camel!

Fools, and blind! for which is greater??he gold or the temple that sanctified the gold?


And the Pharisees and Sadducees, coming near, tempting Him, asked Him to show them a sign from the heaven;

Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered Him, saying, "Teacher, we wish to see a sign from Thee."


But the Pharisees said, "By the ruler of the demons He is casting out the demons."

But the Pharisees, hearing it, said, "This Man doth not cast out the demons, except by Beelzebub, prince of the demons."

But there rose up some from the sect of the Pharisees, who believed, saying, "It is necessary to circumcise them, and to charge them to keep the law of Moses."

And they said to Him, "The disciples of John fast often, and make supplications; likewise also those of the Pharisees; but Thine are eating and drinking!"

I fast twice on the Sabbath; I give a tenth of all that I acquire.'


And He spake also this parable to some who had trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised the rest:

And He said to them, "Ye are those who justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts; because that which is exalted among men is an abomination before God.


And one of the Pharisees was asking Him to eat with him; and, having entered into the Pharisee's house, He reclined at table.

Now, as He spake, a Pharisee asks Him to dine with him; and, entering, He reclined at table.


The Pharisees heard the multitude murmuring these things concerning Him; and the high priests and the Pharisees sent officers to seize Him.

The officers, therefore, came to the high priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, "Why did ye not bring Him?"


And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent forth priests and Levites from Jerusalem, to ask him, "Who are you?"

And they had been sent from among the Pharisees.


and he says, "I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, having been trained according to the exactness of the ancestral law, being zealous for God, even as ye all are to-day;

"But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you shut up the Kingdom of Heaven against men; for ye do not enter, neither do ye suffer those who are entering in to enter. OMITTED TEXT. But all their works they do with the view to be seen by men; for they make broad their phylacteries and enlarge their fringes;

And Saul, yet breathing threatening and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, going to the high priest, asked from him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that, if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.


When, therefore, the Lord knew that the Pharisees heard that Jesus was making and immersing more disciples than John (although Jesus Himself did not immerse, but His disciples), He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.

having known me from the beginning, if they were willing to testify, that according to the strictest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.


Did any one of the rulers believe on Him, or of the Pharisees?


But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the counsel of God as to themselves, not having been immersed by him.


For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees acknowledge both.

"No one, having lighted a lamp, puts it in a cellar, or under a measure, but on a lamp-stand, that those who enter may see the light. The lamp of your body is your eye. When your eye is sound, your whole body also is full of light; but, when it is evil, your body also is dark. Take heed, therefore, lest the light in you be darkness. read more.
If, therefore, your whole body be full of light, not having any part dark, it shall be wholly light, as when the lamp, with its bright shining, illuminates you." Now, as He spake, a Pharisee asks Him to dine with him; and, entering, He reclined at table. And the Pharisee, seeing it, marvelled that He was not first immersed before breakfast. But the Lord said to him, "Now ye, the Pharisees, cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish; but your inward part is full of extortion and wickedness. Senseless ones! Did not He who made the outside make the inside also? But give as alms the things within; and, behold, all things are clean to you. "But woe to you Pharisees! because ye tithe the mint, and the rue, and every herb; but ye pass by judgment and the love of God. Now these things it was needful to do, and not to leave those undone. "Woe to you Pharisees! because ye love the first seats in the synagogues, and the salutations in the marketplaces! Woe to you! because ye are as the unobserved tombs; and the men, walking over them, know it not." And one of the lawyers, answering, says to Him, "Teacher, in saying these things, Thou insultest us also!" And He said, "Woe to you lawyers, also! because ye burden men with burdens hard to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers! "Woe to you! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. Consequently, ye are witnesses, and consent to the works of your fathers; because they, indeed, killed them, and ye build their tombs. On this account also the wisdom of God said, 'I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them will they slay, and some will they persecute; that the blood of all the prophets, which has been shed from the founding of the world, may be required of this generation??51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zachariah who perished between the altar and the house??ea, I say to you, it shall be required of this generation.' "Woe to you lawyers; because ye took away the Key of Knowledge; ye yourselves entered not in, and those who were entering ye hindered." And, when He went forth thence, the scribes and Pharisees began vehemently to press upon Him, and to urge Him to speak concerning many things; lying in wait for Him, to catch something out of His mouth.

They answered Him, "We are Abraham's seed, and to no one have we at any time been in bondage; how sayest Thou, 'Ye shall be made free?' Jesus answered them, "Verily, verily, I say to you, every one who commits sin is a slave of sin. And the slave abides not in the house forever; the son abides forever. read more.
If, therefore, the Son shall make you free, ye will be free indeed. I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye are seeking to kill Me, because My word has no place in you. I speak the things which I have seen with My Father; and ye, therefore, do the things which ye heard from your father. They answered and said to Him, "Our father is Abraham." Jesus saith to them, "If ye are children of Abraham, ye are doing the works of Abraham. But now ye are seeking to kill Me, a Man Who hath told you the truth, which I heard from My Father: this Abraham did not. Ye do the works of your father." They say to Him, "We were not born of fornication; we have one Father??od." Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, ye would love Me; for I came forth, and have come from, God; for neither have I come of Myself, but He sent Me. Why do ye not understand My speech? it is because ye cannot hear My word. Ye are of your father the Devil; and the desires of your father ye wish to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own; because he is a liar, and the father of it. And, because I speak the truth, ye believe Me not. Who of you convicts Me of sin? If I speak truth, why do ye not believe Me? He that is of God hears the words of God; on this account, ye hear them not, because ye are not of God." But I seek not My own glory: there is One Who seeketh and judgeth. Verily, verily, I say to you, if any one keeps My word, he shall never see death." The Jews said to Him, "Now we know that Thou hast a demon! Abraham and the prophets died; and Thou sayest, 'If any one keeps My word, he shall never taste of death!' Art Thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? and the prophets died? Whom makest Thou Thyself?" Jesus answered, "If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing. It is My Father Who glorifieth Me, of Whom ye say, that He is your God. And ye have not known Him, but I know Him; and, if I should say, I know Him not, I shall be a liar like you. But I know Him, and I keep His word. Abraham, your father, rejoiced to see My day; and he saw it, and was glad." The Jews, therefore, said to Him, "Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast Thou seen Abraham?" Jesus said to them, "Verily, verily, I say to you, before Abraham existed, I am." They took up stones, therefore, to cast at Him; but Jesus was concealed, and went out of the temple.

And they reviled him, and said, "You are His disciple; but we are disciples of Moses. We know that God hath spoken to Moses; but, as to this Man, we know not whence He is." The man answered and said to them, "Why, in this is the wonder, that ye do not know whence He is, and He opened my eyes. read more.
We know that God heareth not sinners; but, if any one is a worshiper of God, and does His will, him He heareth. From remotest antiquity, it was never heard that any one opened the eyes of one born blind! If this Man were not from God, He could do nothing." They answered and said to him, You were altogether born in sins, and do you teach us!" And they cast him out.
