the son

､ דָּוִ֔ד

of David ､

מֶ֖לֶךְ

me·leḵ

. בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

bî·rū·šā·lim.

הֲבֵ֤ל

hă·ḇêl

､ הֲבָלִים֙

hă·ḇā·lîm

of vanities ､

אָמַ֣ר

’ā·mar

､ קֹהֶ֔לֶת

qō·he·leṯ,

the Teacher ､

הֲבֵ֥ל

hă·ḇêl

– הֲבָלִ֖ים

hă·ḇā·lîm

of vanities –

הַכֹּ֥ל

hak·kōl

. הָֽבֶל׃

hā·ḇel.

[is] vanity .

מַה־

mah-

יִּתְר֖וֹן

yiṯ·rō·wn

לָֽאָדָ֑ם

lā·’ā·ḏām;

בְּכָל־

bə·ḵāl

עֲמָל֔וֹ

‘ă·mā·lōw,

שֶֽׁיַּעֲמֹ֖ל

še·ya·‘ă·mōl

in which he toils

תַּ֥חַת

ta·ḥaṯ

؟ הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃

haš·šā·meš.

the sun ؟

דּ֤וֹר

dō·wr

[One] generation

､ הֹלֵךְ֙

hō·lêḵ

passes away ､

וְד֣וֹר

wə·ḏō·wr

and [another] generation

､ בָּ֔א

bā,

וְהָאָ֖רֶץ

wə·hā·’ā·reṣ

but the earth

לְעוֹלָ֥ם

lə·‘ō·w·lām

. עֹמָֽדֶת׃

‘ō·mā·ḏeṯ.

､ וְזָרַ֥ח

wə·zā·raḥ

And rises ､

הַשֶּׁ֖מֶשׁ

haš·še·meš

the sun

､ וּבָ֣א

ū·ḇā

and goes down ､

הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ

haš·šā·meš;

the sun

וְאֶ֨ל־

wə·’el-

and to

מְקוֹמ֔וֹ

mə·qō·w·mōw,

שׁוֹאֵ֛ף

šō·w·’êp̄

זוֹרֵ֥חַֽ

zō·w·rê·aḥ

ה֖וּא

hū

it

. שָֽׁם׃

šām.

הוֹלֵךְ֙

hō·w·lêḵ

אֶל־

’el-

､ דָּר֔וֹם

dā·rō·wm,

the south ､

וְסוֹבֵ֖ב

wə·sō·w·ḇêḇ

and turns around

אֶל־

’el-

to

– צָפ֑וֹן

ṣā·p̄ō·wn;

the north –

סוֹבֵ֤ב ׀

sō·w·ḇêḇ

､ סֹבֵב֙

sō·ḇêḇ

continually ､

הוֹלֵ֣ךְ

hō·w·lêḵ

הָר֔וּחַ

hā·rū·aḥ,

the wind

וְעַל־

wə·‘al-

and on

סְבִיבֹתָ֖יו

sə·ḇî·ḇō·ṯāw

שָׁ֥ב

šāḇ

. הָרֽוּחַ׃

hā·rū·aḥ.

the wind .

כָּל־

kāl-

הַנְּחָלִים֙

han·nə·ḥā·lîm

הֹלְכִ֣ים

hō·lə·ḵîm

אֶל־

’el-

– הַיָּ֔ם

hay·yām,

the sea –

וְהַיָּ֖ם

wə·hay·yām

and yet the sea

אֵינֶ֣נּוּ

’ê·nen·nū

[is] not

– מָלֵ֑א

mā·lê;

full –

אֶל־

’el-

to

מְק֗וֹם

mə·qō·wm,

שֶׁ֤הַנְּחָלִים֙

še·han·nə·ḥā·lîm

from which the rivers

､ הֹֽלְכִ֔ים

hō·lə·ḵîm,

come ､

שָׁ֛ם

šām

הֵ֥ם

hêm

שָׁבִ֖ים

šā·ḇîm

. לָלָֽכֶת׃

lā·lā·ḵeṯ.

כָּל־

kāl-

הַדְּבָרִ֣ים

had·də·ḇā·rîm

– יְגֵעִ֔ים

yə·ḡê·‘îm,

לֹא־

lō-

יוּכַ֥ל

yū·ḵal

אִ֖ישׁ

’îš

לְדַבֵּ֑ר

lə·ḏab·bêr;

לֹא־

lō-

not

תִשְׂבַּ֥ע

ṯiś·ba‘

עַ֙יִן֙

‘a·yin

the eye

､ לִרְא֔וֹת

lir·’ō·wṯ,

with seeing ､

וְלֹא־

wə·lō-

תִמָּלֵ֥א

ṯim·mā·lê

אֹ֖זֶן

’ō·zen

the ear

. מִשְּׁמֹֽעַ׃

miš·šə·mō·a‘.

with hearing .

מַה־

mah-

､ שֶּֽׁהָיָה֙

še·hā·yāh

ה֣וּא

hū

is

– שֶׁיִּהְיֶ֔ה

še·yih·yeh,

what will be –

וּמַה־

ū·mah-

and what

שֶׁנַּֽעֲשָׂ֔ה

šen·na·‘ă·śāh,

[is] done

ה֖וּא

hū

is

. שֶׁיֵּעָשֶׂ֑ה

še·yê·‘ā·śeh;

what will be done .

וְאֵ֥ין

wə·’ên

And [there is] nothing

כָּל־

kāl-

חָדָ֖שׁ

ḥā·ḏāš

תַּ֥חַת

ta·ḥaṯ

. הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃

haš·šā·meš.

the sun .

יֵ֥שׁ

yêš

דָּבָ֛ר

dā·ḇār

､ שֶׁיֹּאמַ֥ר

še·yō·mar

of which it may be said ､

､ רְאֵה־

rə·’êh-

See ､

זֶ֖ה

zeh

this [is]

؟ חָדָ֣שׁ

ḥā·ḏāš

new ؟

ה֑וּא

hū;

it

כְּבָר֙

kə·ḇār

הָיָ֣ה

hā·yāh

､ לְעֹֽלָמִ֔ים

lə·‘ō·lā·mîm,

in ancient times ､

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

הָיָ֖ה

hā·yāh

. מִלְּפָנֵֽנוּ׃

mil·lə·p̄ā·nê·nū.

אֵ֥ין

’ên

[There is] no

זִכְר֖וֹן

ziḵ·rō·wn

לָרִאשֹׁנִ֑ים

lā·ri·šō·nîm;

of former [things]

וְגַ֨ם

wə·ḡam

and

. לָאַחֲרֹנִ֜ים

lā·’a·ḥă·rō·nîm

of the later .

שֶׁיִּהְי֗וּ

še·yih·yū,

That will there be

לֹֽא־

lō-

יִהְיֶ֤ה

yih·yeh

לָהֶם֙

lā·hem

זִכָּר֔וֹן

zik·kā·rō·wn,

any remembrance

עִ֥ם

‘im

by

שֶׁיִּהְי֖וּ

še·yih·yū

[those] who will come

. לָאַחֲרֹנָֽה׃

lā·’a·ḥă·rō·nāh.

With Wisdom Comes Sorrow

אֲנִ֣י

’ă·nî

I

קֹהֶ֗לֶת

qō·he·leṯ,

הָיִ֥יתִי

hā·yî·ṯî

מֶ֛לֶךְ

me·leḵ

עַל־

‘al-

יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל

yiś·rā·’êl

. בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

bî·rū·šā·lim.

וְנָתַ֣תִּי

wə·nā·ṯat·tî

And I set

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

לִבִּ֗י

lib·bî,

לִדְר֤וֹשׁ

liḏ·rō·wōš

וְלָתוּר֙

wə·lā·ṯūr

בַּֽחָכְמָ֔ה

ba·ḥā·ḵə·māh,

עַ֛ל

‘al

כָּל־

kāl-

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

נַעֲשָׂ֖ה

na·‘ă·śāh

תַּ֣חַת

ta·ḥaṯ

. הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם

haš·šā·mā·yim;

ה֣וּא ׀

hū

עִנְיַ֣ן

‘in·yan

רָ֗ע

rā‘,

נָתַ֧ן

nā·ṯan

אֱלֹהִ֛ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm

לִבְנֵ֥י

liḇ·nê

to the sons

הָאָדָ֖ם

hā·’ā·ḏām

of man

לַעֲנ֥וֹת

la·‘ă·nō·wṯ

they may be exercised

. בּֽוֹ׃

bōw.

by which .

רָאִ֙יתִי֙

rā·’î·ṯî

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

כָּל־

kāl-

הַֽמַּעֲשִׂ֔ים

ham·ma·‘ă·śîm,

שֶֽׁנַּעֲשׂ֖וּ

šen·na·‘ă·śū

תַּ֣חַת

ta·ḥaṯ

– הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ

haš·šā·meš;

the sun –

､ וְהִנֵּ֥ה

wə·hin·nêh

and indeed ､

הַכֹּ֛ל

hak·kōl

הֶ֖בֶל

he·ḇel

וּרְע֥וּת

ū·rə·‘ūṯ

and grasping for

. רֽוּחַ׃

rū·aḥ.

the wind .

מְעֻוָּ֖ת

mə·‘uw·wāṯ

[What is] crooked

לֹא־

lō-

יוּכַ֣ל

yū·ḵal

– לִתְקֹ֑ן

liṯ·qōn;

וְחֶסְר֖וֹן

wə·ḥes·rō·wn

and what is lacking

לֹא־

lō-

יוּכַ֥ל

yū·ḵal

be

. לְהִמָּנֽוֹת׃

lə·him·mā·nō·wṯ.

דִּבַּ֨רְתִּי

dib·bar·tî

אֲנִ֤י

’ă·nî

I

עִם־

‘im-

with

､ לִבִּי֙

lib·bî

my heart ､

､ לֵאמֹ֔ר

lê·mōr,

אֲנִ֗י

’ă·nî,

I

､ הִנֵּ֨ה

hin·nêh

Look ､

､ הִגְדַּ֤לְתִּי

hiḡ·dal·tî

have attained greatness ､

וְהוֹסַ֙פְתִּי֙

wə·hō·w·sap̄·tî

and have gained more

חָכְמָ֔ה

ḥāḵ·māh

עַ֛ל

‘al

כָּל־

kāl-

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

הָיָ֥ה

hā·yāh

לְפָנַ֖י

lə·p̄ā·nay

עַל־

‘al-

in

– יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם

yə·rū·šā·lim;

וְלִבִּ֛י

wə·lib·bî

and My heart

רָאָ֥ה

rā·’āh

הַרְבֵּ֖ה

har·bêh

חָכְמָ֥ה

ḥāḵ·māh

. וָדָֽעַת׃

wā·ḏā·‘aṯ.

and knowledge .

וָאֶתְּנָ֤ה

wā·’et·tə·nāh

And I set

לִבִּי֙

lib·bî

לָדַ֣עַת

lā·ḏa·‘aṯ

､ חָכְמָ֔ה

ḥāḵ·māh

וְדַ֥עַת

wə·ḏa·‘aṯ

and to know

הוֹלֵל֖וֹת

hō·w·lê·lō·wṯ

– וְשִׂכְל֑וּת

wə·śiḵ·lūṯ;

and folly –

יָדַ֕עְתִּי

yā·ḏa‘·tî

שֶׁגַּם־

šeg·gam-

זֶ֥ה

zeh

ה֖וּא

hū

is

רַעְי֥וֹן

ra‘·yō·wn

. רֽוּחַ׃

rū·aḥ.

the wind .

כִּ֛י

kî

בְּרֹ֥ב

bə·rōḇ

חָכְמָ֖ה

ḥāḵ·māh

רָב־

rāḇ-

[is] much

､ כָּ֑עַס

kā·‘as;

וְיוֹסִ֥יף

wə·yō·w·sîp̄

and he who increases

דַּ֖עַת

da·‘aṯ

יוֹסִ֥יף

yō·w·sîp̄

. מַכְאֽוֹב׃

maḵ·’ō·wḇ.
