､ בְּלִבִּ֔י

in my heart ､

לְכָה־

､ נָּ֛א

nā

now ､

אֲנַסְּכָ֛ה

’ă·nas·sə·ḵāh

I will test you

､ בְשִׂמְחָ֖ה

ḇə·śim·ḥāh

with mirth ､

וּרְאֵ֣ה

ū·rə·’êh

therefore enjoy

– בְט֑וֹב

ḇə·ṭō·wḇ;

､ וְהִנֵּ֥ה

wə·hin·nêh

but surely ､

גַם־

ḡam-

ה֖וּא

hū

. הָֽבֶל׃

hā·ḇel.

､ לִשְׂח֖וֹק

liś·ḥō·wq

Of laughter ､

אָמַ֣רְתִּי

’ā·mar·tî

､ מְהוֹלָ֑ל

mə·hō·w·lāl;

､ וּלְשִׂמְחָ֖ה

ū·lə·śim·ḥāh

and of mirth ､

מַה־

mah-

זֹּ֥ה

zōh

؟ עֹשָֽׂה׃

‘ō·śāh.

does accomplish ؟

תַּ֣רְתִּי

tar·tî

בְלִבִּ֔י

ḇə·lib·bî,

in my heart

לִמְשׁ֥וֹךְ

lim·šō·wḵ

[how] to gratify

､ בַּיַּ֖יִן

bay·ya·yin

with wine ､

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

בְּשָׂרִ֑י

bə·śā·rî;

וְלִבִּ֞י

wə·lib·bî

and while my heart

נֹהֵ֤ג

nō·hêḡ

– בַּֽחָכְמָה֙

ba·ḥā·ḵə·māh

with wisdom –

וְלֶאֱחֹ֣ז

wə·le·’ĕ·ḥōz

and how to lay hold

､ בְּסִכְל֔וּת

bə·siḵ·lūṯ,

on folly ､

עַ֣ד

‘aḏ

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

אֶרְאֶ֗ה

’er·’eh,

אֵי־

’ê-

זֶ֨ה

zeh

ט֜וֹב

לִבְנֵ֤י

liḇ·nê

､ הָאָדָם֙

hā·’ā·ḏām

of men ､

אֲשֶׁ֤ר

יַעֲשׂוּ֙

ya·‘ă·śū

to do

תַּ֣חַת

ta·ḥaṯ

הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם

haš·šā·ma·yim,

מִסְפַּ֖ר

mis·par

יְמֵ֥י

. חַיֵּיהֶֽם׃

ḥay·yê·hem.

of their lives .

הִגְדַּ֖לְתִּי

hiḡ·dal·tî

– מַעֲשָׂ֑י

ma·‘ă·śāy;

my works –

בָּנִ֤יתִי

bā·nî·ṯî

לִי֙

– בָּתִּ֔ים

bāt·tîm,

נָטַ֥עְתִּי

nā·ṭa‘·tî

לִ֖י

– כְּרָמִֽים׃

kə·rā·mîm.

עָשִׂ֣יתִי

לִ֔י

גַּנּ֖וֹת

gan·nō·wṯ

､ וּפַרְדֵּסִ֑ים

and orchards ､

וְנָטַ֥עְתִּי

wə·nā·ṭa‘·tî

בָהֶ֖ם

עֵ֥ץ

‘êṣ

כָּל־

kāl-

– פֶּֽרִי׃

of fruit –

עָשִׂ֥יתִי

לְהַשְׁק֣וֹת

the trees of .

קָנִ֙יתִי֙

עֲבָדִ֣ים

､ וּשְׁפָח֔וֹת

and maidservants ､

וּבְנֵי־

ū·ḇə·nê-

and servants in

לִ֑י

. בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

gam-

כֶּ֣סֶף

､ וְזָהָ֔ב

wə·zā·hāḇ,

and gold ､

וּסְגֻלַּ֥ת

ū·sə·ḡul·laṯ

and the special treasures

מְלָכִ֖ים

mə·lā·ḵîm

. וְהַמְּדִינ֑וֹת

wə·ham·mə·ḏî·nō·wṯ;

and of the provinces .

עָשִׂ֨יתִי

‘ā·śî·ṯî

לִ֜י

lî

I

שָׁרִ֣ים

šā·rîm

､ וְשָׁר֗וֹת

wə·šā·rō·wṯ,

and female singers ､

וְתַעֲנוּגֹ֛ת

wə·ṯa·‘ă·nū·ḡōṯ

and the delights

בְּנֵ֥י

bə·nê

of the sons

､ הָאָדָ֖ם

hā·’ā·ḏām

of men ､

שִׁדָּ֥ה

šid·dāh

､ וְשִׁדּֽוֹת׃

wə·šid·dō·wṯ.

and [and] musical instruments of [all kinds] ､

､ וְגָדַ֣לְתִּי

wə·ḡā·ḏal·tî

so I became great ､

וְהוֹסַ֔פְתִּי

wə·hō·w·sap̄·tî,

and excelled more

מִכֹּ֛ל

mik·kōl

שֶׁהָיָ֥ה

še·hā·yāh

לְפָנַ֖י

lə·p̄ā·nay

. בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם

bî·rū·šā·lim;

אַ֥ף

’ap̄

חָכְמָתִ֖י

ḥā·ḵə·mā·ṯî

עָ֥מְדָה

‘ā·mə·ḏāh

. לִּֽי׃

with me .

וְכֹל֙

my labor –

וְזֶֽה־

and this

הָיָ֥ה

חֶלְקִ֖י

ḥel·qî

מִכָּל־

mik·kāl

. עֲמָלִֽי׃

‘ă·mā·lî.

my labor .

וּפָנִ֣יתִֽי

ū·p̄ā·nî·ṯî

אֲנִ֗י

’ă·nî,

I

בְּכָל־

bə·ḵāl

on all

מַעֲשַׂי֙

ma·‘ă·śay

– שֶֽׁעָשׂ֣וּ

še·‘ā·śū

that had done –

יָדַ֔י

yā·ḏay,

וּבֶֽעָמָ֖ל

ū·ḇe·‘ā·māl

and on the labor

שֶׁעָמַ֣לְתִּי

še·‘ā·mal·tî

in which I had toiled

לַעֲשׂ֑וֹת

la·‘ă·śō·wṯ;

to do

､ וְהִנֵּ֨ה

wə·hin·nêh

and indeed ､

הַכֹּ֥ל

hak·kōl

הֶ֙בֶל֙

he·ḇel

וּרְע֣וּת

ū·rə·‘ūṯ

and grasping for

､ ר֔וּחַ

rū·aḥ,

the wind ､

וְאֵ֥ין

wə·’ên

and [There was] no

יִתְר֖וֹן

yiṯ·rō·wn

תַּ֥חַת

ta·ḥaṯ

. הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃

haš·šā·meš.

the sun .

The Wise and the Foolish

וּפָנִ֤יתִֽי

ū·p̄ā·nî·ṯî

אֲנִי֙

’ă·nî

I

לִרְא֣וֹת

lir·’ō·wṯ

､ חָכְמָ֔ה

ḥāḵ·māh

､ וְהוֹלֵל֖וֹת

wə·hō·w·lê·lō·wṯ

and madness ､

– וְסִכְל֑וּת

wə·siḵ·lūṯ;

and folly –

כִּ֣י ׀

kî

מֶ֣ה

meh

הָאָדָ֗ם

hā·’ā·ḏām,

the man

שֶׁיָּבוֹא֙

še·yā·ḇō·w

אַחֲרֵ֣י

’a·ḥă·rê

؟ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ

ham·me·leḵ,

the king ؟

אֵ֥ת

’êṯ

-

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

כְּבָ֖ר

kə·ḇār

. עָשֽׂוּהוּ׃

‘ā·śū·hū.

וְרָאִ֣יתִי

wə·rā·’î·ṯî

And saw

אָ֔נִי

’ā·nî,

I

שֶׁיֵּ֥שׁ

še·yêš

יִתְר֛וֹן

yiṯ·rō·wn

לַֽחָכְמָ֖ה

la·ḥā·ḵə·māh

מִן־

min-

､ הַסִּכְל֑וּת

has·siḵ·lūṯ;

כִּֽיתְר֥וֹן

kî·ṯə·rō·wn

הָא֖וֹר

hā·’ō·wr

מִן־

min-

. הַחֹֽשֶׁךְ׃

ha·ḥō·šeḵ.

הֶֽחָכָם֙

he·ḥā·ḵām

Of the wise man

עֵינָ֣יו

‘ê·nāw

– בְּרֹאשׁ֔וֹ

bə·rō·šōw,

in his head –

וְהַכְּסִ֖יל

wə·hak·kə·sîl

but the fool

. בַּחֹ֣שֶׁךְ

ba·ḥō·šeḵ

הוֹלֵ֑ךְ

hō·w·lêḵ;

וְיָדַ֣עְתִּי

wə·yā·ḏa‘·tî

and yet perceived

גַם־

ḡam-

אָ֔נִי

’ā·nî,

I

שֶׁמִּקְרֶ֥ה

šem·miq·reh

אֶחָ֖ד

’e·ḥāḏ

יִקְרֶ֥ה

yiq·reh

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

. כֻּלָּֽם׃

kul·lām.

וְאָמַ֨רְתִּֽי

wə·’ā·mar·tî

אֲנִ֜י

’ă·nî

I

､ בְּלִבִּ֗י

bə·lib·bî,

in my heart ､

כְּמִקְרֵ֤ה

kə·miq·rêh

as it happens to

､ הַכְּסִיל֙

hak·kə·sîl

the fool ､

גַּם־

gam-

אֲנִ֣י

’ă·nî

me

יִקְרֵ֔נִי

yiq·rê·nî,

וְלָ֧מָּה

wə·lām·māh

and why

؟ חָכַ֛מְתִּי

ḥā·ḵam·tî

אֲנִ֖י

’ă·nî

I

אָ֣ז

’āz

יוֹתֵ֑ר

yō·w·ṯêr;

וְדִבַּ֣רְתִּי

wə·ḏib·bar·tî

and I said

､ בְלִבִּ֔י

ḇə·lib·bî,

in my heart ､

שֶׁגַּם־

šeg·gam-

זֶ֖ה

zeh

. הָֽבֶל׃

hā·ḇel.

[is] vanity .

כִּי֩

kî

אֵ֨ין

’ên

[there is] no

זִכְר֧וֹן

ziḵ·rō·wn

לֶחָכָ֛ם

le·ḥā·ḵām

of the wise

עִֽם־

‘im-

הַכְּסִ֖יל

hak·kə·sîl

of the fool

– לְעוֹלָ֑ם

lə·‘ō·w·lām;

בְּשֶׁכְּבָ֞ר

bə·šek·kə·ḇār

Since that now [is]

הַיָּמִ֤ים

hay·yā·mîm

in the days

הַבָּאִים֙

hab·bā·’îm

הַכֹּ֣ל

hak·kōl

. נִשְׁכָּ֔ח

niš·kāḥ,

will be forgotten .

וְאֵ֛יךְ

wə·’êḵ

And how

יָמ֥וּת

yā·mūṯ

הֶחָכָ֖ם

he·ḥā·ḵām

עִֽם־

‘im-

as

. הַכְּסִֽיל׃

hak·kə·sîl.

the fool .

וְשָׂנֵ֙אתִי֙

wə·śā·nê·ṯî

Therefore I hated

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

– הַ֣חַיִּ֔ים

ha·ḥay·yîm,

life –

כִּ֣י

kî

רַ֤ע

ra‘

[was] distressing

עָלַי֙

‘ā·lay

to me

הַֽמַּעֲשֶׂ֔ה

ham·ma·‘ă·śeh,

the work

שֶׁנַּעֲשָׂ֖ה

šen·na·‘ă·śāh

תַּ֣חַת

ta·ḥaṯ

הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ

haš·šā·meš;

the sun

כִּֽי־

kî-

הַכֹּ֥ל

hak·kōl

הֶ֖בֶל

he·ḇel

וּרְע֥וּת

ū·rə·‘ūṯ

and grasping for

. רֽוּחַ׃

rū·aḥ.

the wind .

The Futility of Work

וְשָׂנֵ֤אתִֽי

wə·śā·nê·ṯî

אֲנִי֙

’ă·nî

I

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

כָּל־

kāl-

עֲמָלִ֔י

‘ă·mā·lî,

שֶׁאֲנִ֥י

še·’ă·nî

in which I

עָמֵ֖ל

‘ā·mêl

תַּ֣חַת

ta·ḥaṯ

､ הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ

haš·šā·meš;

the sun ､

שֶׁ֣אַנִּיחֶ֔נּוּ

še·’an·nî·ḥen·nū,

because I must leave it

לָאָדָ֖ם

lā·’ā·ḏām

to the man

שֶׁיִּהְיֶ֥ה

še·yih·yeh

. אַחֲרָֽי׃

’a·ḥă·rāy.

after me .

וּמִ֣י

ū·mî

And who

יוֹדֵ֗עַ

yō·w·ḏê·a‘,

הֶֽחָכָ֤ם

he·ḥā·ḵām

יִהְיֶה֙

yih·yeh

he will be

א֣וֹ

’ōw

or

؟ סָכָ֔ל

sā·ḵāl,

a fool ؟

וְיִשְׁלַט֙

wə·yiš·laṭ

and yet he will rule

בְּכָל־

bə·ḵāl

עֲמָלִ֔י

‘ă·mā·lî,

שֶֽׁעָמַ֥לְתִּי

še·‘ā·mal·tî

in which toiled I

וְשֶׁחָכַ֖מְתִּי

wə·še·ḥā·ḵam·tî

and in which I have shown myself wise

תַּ֣חַת

ta·ḥaṯ

. הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ

haš·šā·meš;

the sun .

גַּם־

gam-

זֶ֖ה

zeh

. הָֽבֶל׃

hā·ḇel.

[is] vanity .

וְסַבּ֥וֹתִֽי

Therefore turned

אֲנִ֖י

לְיַאֵ֣שׁ

הֶ֣עָמָ֔ל

in which I had toiled

. הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃

the sun .

כִּי־

יֵ֣שׁ

אָדָ֗ם

שֶׁעֲמָל֛וֹ

še·‘ă·mā·lōw

whose labor [is]

､ בְּחָכְמָ֥ה

bə·ḥā·ḵə·māh

with wisdom ､

､ וּבְדַ֖עַת

ū·ḇə·ḏa·‘aṯ

and knowledge ､

– וּבְכִשְׁר֑וֹן

ū·ḇə·ḵiš·rō·wn;

and skill –

וּלְאָדָ֞ם

ū·lə·’ā·ḏām

and yet to a man

שֶׁלֹּ֤א

šel·lō

who not

עָֽמַל־

‘ā·mal-

בּוֹ֙

bōw

for it

יִתְּנֶ֣נּוּ

yit·tə·nen·nū

. חֶלְק֔וֹ

ḥel·qōw,

גַּם־

gam-

זֶ֥ה

zeh

הֶ֖בֶל

he·ḇel

וְרָעָ֥ה

wə·rā·‘āh

and a evil

. רַבָּֽה׃

rab·bāh.

כִּ֠י

kî

מֶֽה־

meh-

הֹוֶ֤ה

hō·weh

לָֽאָדָם֙

lā·’ā·ḏām

בְּכָל־

bə·ḵāl

､ עֲמָל֔וֹ

‘ă·mā·lōw,

וּבְרַעְי֖וֹן

for the striving

､ לִבּ֑ו‪‬‪‬‪‬

lib·bōw;

of his heart ､

שֶׁה֥וּא

še·hū

with which he

עָמֵ֖ל

‘ā·mêl

תַּ֥חַת

ta·ḥaṯ

؟ הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃

haš·šā·meš.

the sun ؟

כִּ֧י

kî

כָל־

ḵāl

יָמָ֣יו

yā·māw

､ מַכְאֹבִ֗ים

maḵ·’ō·ḇîm,

[are] sorrowful ､

– וָכַ֙עַס֙

wā·ḵa·‘as

and burdensome –

עִנְיָנ֔וֹ

‘in·yā·nōw,

､ גַּם־

gam-

even ､

. בַּלַּ֖יְלָה

bal·lay·lāh

in the night .

לֹא־

lō-

שָׁכַ֣ב

šā·ḵaḇ

לִבּ֑וֹ

lib·bōw;

גַּם־

gam-

זֶ֖ה

zeh

הֶ֥בֶל

he·ḇel

. הֽוּא׃

hū.

is .

אֵֽין־

’ên-

ט֤וֹב

､ בָּאָדָם֙

for a man ､

שֶׁיֹּאכַ֣ל

še·yō·ḵal

[than] that he should eat

､ וְשָׁתָ֔ה

wə·šā·ṯāh,

and drink ､

וְהֶרְאָ֧ה

wə·her·’āh

and [that] should enjoy

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

נַפְשׁ֛וֹ

nap̄·šōw

ט֖וֹב

. בַּעֲמָל֑וֹ

ba·‘ă·mā·lōw;

גַּם־

gam-

can have enjoyment

than I .

כִּ֤י

לְאָדָם֙

lə·’ā·ḏām

to a man

שֶׁטּ֣וֹב

šeṭ·ṭō·wḇ

לְפָנָ֔יו

lə·p̄ā·nāw,

נָתַ֛ן

nā·ṯan

､ חָכְמָ֥ה

ḥāḵ·māh

､ וְדַ֖עַת

wə·ḏa·‘aṯ

and knowledge ､

､ וְשִׂמְחָ֑ה

wə·śim·ḥāh;

and joy ､

וְלַחוֹטֶא֩

wə·la·ḥō·w·ṭe

but to the sinner

נָתַ֨ן

nā·ṯan

､ עִנְיָ֜ן

‘in·yān

the work ､

לֶאֱס֣וֹף

le·’ĕ·sō·wp̄

､ וְלִכְנ֗וֹס

wə·liḵ·nō·ws,

and collecting ､

לָתֵת֙

lā·ṯêṯ

that He may give

לְטוֹב֙

lə·ṭō·wḇ

to [him who is] good

לִפְנֵ֣י

lip̄·nê

. הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים

hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm,

גַּם־

gam-

זֶ֥ה

zeh

הֶ֖בֶל

he·ḇel

וּרְע֥וּת

ū·rə·‘ūṯ

and grasping for

. רֽוּחַ׃

rū·aḥ.

the wind .
