､ בְּצִיּ֗וֹן

bə·ṣî·yō·wn,

in Zion ､

וְהָרִ֙יעוּ֙

wə·hā·rî·‘ū

and sound an alarm

! בְּהַ֣ר

bə·har

קָדְשִׁ֔י

qāḏ·šî

､ יִרְגְּז֕וּ

yir·gə·zū

let tremble ､

כֹּ֖ל

kōl

יֹשְׁבֵ֣י

yō·šə·ḇê

the inhabitants

הָאָ֑רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ;

of the land

כִּֽי־

kî-

､ בָ֥א

ḇā

is coming ､

יוֹם־

yō·wm-

the day

יְהוָ֖ה

Yah·weh

כִּ֥י

kî

– קָרֽוֹב׃

qā·rō·wḇ.

it is at hand –

י֧וֹם

חֹ֣שֶׁךְ

ḥō·šeḵ

､ וַאֲפֵלָ֗ה

wa·’ă·p̄ê·lāh,

and [deep] darkness ､

י֤וֹם

yō·wm

עָנָן֙

‘ā·nān

､ וַעֲרָפֶ֔ל

wa·‘ă·rā·p̄el,

and thick darkness ､

כְּשַׁ֖חַר

kə·ša·ḥar

Like the morning [clouds]

פָּרֻ֣שׂ

pā·ruś

עַל־

‘al-

､ הֶֽהָרִ֑ים

he·hā·rîm;

the mountains ､

עַ֚ם

‘am

a people [come]

רַ֣ב

raḇ

– וְעָצ֔וּם

wə·‘ā·ṣūm,

and strong –

､ כָּמֹ֗הוּ

kā·mō·hū,

the like of whom ､

לֹ֤א

lō

נִֽהְיָה֙

nih·yāh

מִן־

min-

הָ֣עוֹלָ֔ם

hā·‘ō·w·lām,

וְאַֽחֲרָיו֙

wə·’a·ḥă·rāw

לֹ֣א

יוֹסֵ֔ף

yō·w·sêp̄,

will there be any [such]

עַד־

‘aḏ-

שְׁנֵ֖י

šə·nê

דּ֥וֹר

dō·wr

. וָדֽוֹר׃

wā·ḏō·wr.

and many successive .

לְפָנָיו֙

lə·p̄ā·nāw

אָ֣כְלָה

’ā·ḵə·lāh

אֵ֔שׁ

’êš,

וְאַחֲרָ֖יו

wə·’a·ḥă·rāw

and behind them

. תְּלַהֵ֣ט

tə·la·hêṭ

לֶֽהָבָ֑ה

le·hā·ḇāh;

כְּגַן־

kə·ḡan-

[is] like the Garden

עֵ֨דֶן

‘ê·ḏen

הָאָ֜רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ

the land

לְפָנָ֗יו

lə·p̄ā·nāw,

וְאַֽחֲרָיו֙

wə·’a·ḥă·rāw

and behind them

– מִדְבַּ֣ר

miḏ·bar

a wilderness –

שְׁמָמָ֔ה

šə·mā·māh,

､ וְגַם־

wə·ḡam-

and surely ､

פְּלֵיטָ֖ה

pə·lê·ṭāh

לֹא־

lō-

הָ֥יְתָה

hā·yə·ṯāh

. לּֽוֹ׃

lōw.

כְּמַרְאֵ֥ה

kə·mar·’êh

Like the appearance

– סוּסִ֖ים

sū·sîm

of horses –

מַרְאֵ֑הוּ

mar·’ê·hū;

their appearance is

､ וּכְפָרָשִׁ֖ים

ū·ḵə·p̄ā·rā·šîm

and like swift steeds ､

כֵּ֥ן

so

. יְרוּצֽוּן׃

yə·rū·ṣūn.

כְּק֣וֹל

kə·qō·wl

With a noise like

מַרְכָּב֗וֹת

mar·kā·ḇō·wṯ,

עַל־

‘al-

רָאשֵׁ֤י

rā·šê

the tops

הֶֽהָרִים֙

he·hā·rîm

､ יְרַקֵּד֔וּן

yə·raq·qê·ḏūn,

כְּקוֹל֙

kə·qō·wl

לַ֣הַב

la·haḇ

of a fire

אֵ֔שׁ

’êš,

אֹכְלָ֖ה

’ō·ḵə·lāh

､ קָ֑שׁ

qāš;

the stubble ､

כְּעַ֣ם

kə·‘am

עָצ֔וּם

‘ā·ṣūm,

עֱר֖וּךְ

‘ĕ·rūḵ

. מִלְחָמָֽה׃

mil·ḥā·māh.

מִפָּנָ֖יו

mip·pā·nāw

– יָחִ֣ילוּ

yā·ḥî·lū

writhe in pain –

עַמִּ֑ים

‘am·mîm;

כָּל־

kāl-

פָּנִ֖ים

pā·nîm

קִבְּצ֥וּ

qib·bə·ṣū

. פָארֽוּר׃

of color .

– כְּגִבּוֹרִ֣ים

kə·ḡib·bō·w·rîm

Like mighty men –

יְרֻצ֔וּן

yə·ru·ṣūn,

כְּאַנְשֵׁ֥י

kə·’an·šê

– מִלְחָמָ֖ה

mil·ḥā·māh

of war –

יַעֲל֣וּ

ya·‘ă·lū

חוֹמָ֑ה

ḥō·w·māh;

the wall

וְאִ֤ישׁ

wə·’îš

､ בִּדְרָכָיו֙

biḏ·rā·ḵāw

in formation ､

יֵֽלֵכ֔וּן

yê·lê·ḵūn,

וְלֹ֥א

wə·lō

and not

יְעַבְּט֖וּן

yə·‘ab·bə·ṭūn

. אֹרְחוֹתָֽם׃

’ō·rə·ḥō·w·ṯām.

וְאִ֤ישׁ

And one

– בִּמְסִלָּת֖וֹ

and Though between

the weapons ､

they are cut down .

– בָּעִ֣יר

In the city –

יָשֹׁ֗קּוּ

they run to and fro

､ בַּֽחוֹמָה֙

ba·ḥō·w·māh

on the wall ､

יְרֻצ֔וּן

yə·ru·ṣūn,

– בַּבָּתִּ֖ים

bab·bāt·tîm

into the houses –

יַעֲל֑וּ

ya·‘ă·lū;

בְּעַ֧ד

bə·‘aḏ

at

הַחַלּוֹנִ֛ים

ha·ḥal·lō·w·nîm

יָבֹ֖אוּ

yā·ḇō·’ū

. כַּגַּנָּֽב׃

kag·gan·nāḇ.

לְפָנָיו֙

רָ֣גְזָה

rā·ḡə·zāh

אֶ֔רֶץ

’e·reṣ,

､ רָעֲשׁ֖וּ

rā·‘ă·šū

שָׁמָ֑יִם

šā·mā·yim;

שֶׁ֤מֶשׁ

the sun

וְיָרֵ֙חַ֙

wə·yā·rê·aḥ

and moon

､ קָדָ֔רוּ

qā·ḏā·rū,

וְכוֹכָבִ֖ים

and the stars

אָסְפ֥וּ

’ā·sə·p̄ū

. נָגְהָֽם׃

nā·ḡə·hām.

their brightness .

וַֽיהוָ֗ה

קוֹלוֹ֙

לִפְנֵ֣י

חֵיל֔וֹ

[the One] who executes

[is] great

the day of

יְהוָ֛ה

Yah·weh

– וְנוֹרָ֥א

and terrible –

מְאֹ֖ד

וּמִ֥י

and who

. יְכִילֶֽנּוּ׃

yə·ḵî·len·nū.

can endure it .

Return with All Your Heart

וְגַם־

wə·ḡam-

､ עַתָּה֙

‘at·tāh

now ､

נְאֻם־

nə·’um-

､ יְהוָ֔ה

Yah·weh,

שֻׁ֥בוּ

עָדַ֖י

‘ā·ḏay

to Me

בְּכָל־

bə·ḵāl

with all

､ לְבַבְכֶ֑ם

lə·ḇaḇ·ḵem;

､ וּבְצ֥וֹם

ū·ḇə·ṣō·wm

and with fasting ､

､ וּבְבְכִ֖י‪‬

ū·ḇə·ḇə·ḵî

and with weeping ､

– וּבְמִסְפֵּֽד׃

ū·ḇə·mis·pêḏ.

and with mourning –

וְקִרְע֤וּ

wə·qir·‘ū

､ לְבַבְכֶם֙

lə·ḇaḇ·ḵem

וְאַל־

wə·’al-

and not

､ בִּגְדֵיכֶ֔ם

biḡ·ḏê·ḵem,

your garments ､

וְשׁ֖וּבוּ

wə·šū·ḇū

אֶל־

’el-

to

יְהוָ֣ה

Yah·weh

､ אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֑ם

’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem;

כִּֽי־

kî-

חַנּ֤וּן

ḥan·nūn

､ וְרַחוּם֙

and merciful ､

ה֔וּא

hū,

He [is]

אֶ֤רֶךְ

､ אַפַּ֙יִם֙

to anger ､

וְרַב־

wə·raḇ-

､ חֶ֔סֶד

ḥe·seḏ,

of kindness ､

וְנִחָ֖ם

wə·ni·ḥām

and He relents

עַל־

‘al-

. הָרָעָֽה׃

hā·rā·‘āh.

יוֹדֵ֖עַ

יָשׁ֣וּב

[if] He will turn

､ וְנִחָ֑ם

wə·ni·ḥām;

and relent ､

וְהִשְׁאִ֤יר

wə·hiš·’îr

אַֽחֲרָיו֙

’a·ḥă·rāw

בְּרָכָ֔ה

bə·rā·ḵāh,

מִנְחָ֣ה

min·ḥāh

a grain offering

וָנֶ֔סֶךְ

wā·ne·seḵ,

and a drink offering

לַיהוָ֖ה

Yah·weh

؟ אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃

､ קָהָל֙

the congregation ､

קִבְצ֣וּ

qiḇ·ṣū

､ זְקֵנִ֔ים

the elders ､

אִסְפוּ֙

’is·p̄ū

､ עֽוֹלָלִ֔ים

‘ō·w·lā·lîm,

the sons ､

וְיֹנְקֵ֖י

– שָׁדָ֑יִם

יֵצֵ֤א

חָתָן֙

ḥā·ṯān

､ מֵֽחֶדְר֔וֹ

mê·ḥeḏ·rōw,

from his chamber ､

וְכַלָּ֖ה

wə·ḵal·lāh

and the bride

. מֵחֻפָּתָֽהּ׃

mê·ḥup·pā·ṯāh.

from her dressing room .

בֵּ֤ין

bên

הָאוּלָם֙

hā·’ū·lām

､ וְלַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ

wə·lam·miz·bê·aḥ,

and the altar ､

יִבְכּוּ֙

yiḇ·kū

､ הַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים

hak·kō·hă·nîm,

the priests ､

מְשָׁרְתֵ֖י

mə·šā·rə·ṯê

who minister to

､ יְהוָ֑ה

Yah·weh;

､ וְֽיֹאמְר֞וּ

wə·yō·mə·rū

and let them say ､

ח֧וּסָה

ḥū·sāh

､ יְהוָ֣ה

עַל־

‘al-

､ עַמֶּ֗ךָ

‘am·me·ḵā,

Your people ､

וְאַל־

wə·’al-

and not

תִּתֵּ֨ן

נַחֲלָתְךָ֤

､ לְחֶרְפָּה֙

lə·ḥer·pāh

to reproach ､

לִמְשָׁל־

lim·šāl-

that should rule

יֹאמְר֣וּ

should they say

､ בָֽעַמִּ֔ים

among the peoples ､

where [is]

؟ אֱלֹהֵיהֶֽם׃

Restoration Promised

וַיְקַנֵּ֥א

way·qan·nê

and will be zealous

יְהוָ֖ה

Yah·weh

､ לְאַרְצ֑וֹ

lə·’ar·ṣōw;

for His land ､

וַיַּחְמֹ֖ל

way·yaḥ·mōl

and pity

עַל־

‘al-

on

. עַמּֽוֹ׃

‘am·mōw.

וַיַּ֨עַן

way·ya·‘an

And will answer

יְהוָ֜ה

Yah·weh

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

way·yō·mer

and say

､ לְעַמּ֗וֹ

lə·‘am·mōw,

to His people ､

הִנְנִ֨י

hin·nî

שֹׁלֵ֤חַ

šō·lê·aḥ

I will send

לָכֶם֙

lā·ḵem

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הַדָּגָן֙

had·dā·ḡān

､ וְהַתִּיר֣וֹשׁ

wə·hat·tî·rō·wōš

and new wine ､

､ וְהַיִּצְהָ֔ר

wə·hay·yiṣ·hār,

and oil ､

וּשְׂבַעְתֶּ֖ם

ū·śə·ḇa‘·tem

and you will be satisfied

– אֹת֑וֹ

’ō·ṯōw;

by them –

וְלֹא־

wə·lō-

and no

אֶתֵּ֨ן

’et·tên

I will make

אֶתְכֶ֥ם

’eṯ·ḵem

ע֛וֹד

‘ō·wḏ

חֶרְפָּ֖ה

ḥer·pāh

. בַּגּוֹיִֽם׃

bag·gō·w·yim.

among the nations .

וְֽאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

But

הַצְּפוֹנִ֞י

haṣ·ṣə·p̄ō·w·nî

the northern [army]

אַרְחִ֣יק

’ar·ḥîq

I will remove far

מֵעֲלֵיכֶ֗ם

mê·‘ă·lê·ḵem,

וְהִדַּחְתִּיו֮

wə·hid·daḥ·tîw

and will drive him away

אֶל־

’el-

אֶ֣רֶץ

’e·reṣ

צִיָּ֣ה

ṣî·yāh

､ וּשְׁמָמָה֒

and desolate ､

אֶת־

’eṯ-

with

פָּנָ֗יו

pā·nāw,

אֶל־

､ הַיָּם֙

hay·yām

the sea ､

הַקַּדְמֹנִ֔י

haq·qaḏ·mō·nî,

וְסֹפ֖וֹ

wə·sō·p̄ōw

אֶל־

､ הַיָּ֣ם

the sea ､

הָאַֽחֲר֑וֹן

､ וְעָלָ֣ה

and will come up ､

בָאְשׁ֗וֹ

､ וְתַ֙עַל֙

and will rise ､

צַחֲנָת֔וֹ

ṣa·ḥă·nā·ṯōw,

הִגְדִּ֖יל

monstrous things

. לַעֲשֽׂוֹת׃

la·‘ă·śō·wṯ.

､ אַל־

’al-

Not ､

תִּֽירְאִ֖י

tî·rə·’î

– אֲדָמָ֑ה

’ă·ḏā·māh;

land –

גִּ֣ילִי

gî·lî

､ וּשְׂמָ֔חִי

ū·śə·mā·ḥî,

and rejoice ､

כִּֽי־

kî-

הִגְדִּ֥יל

hiḡ·dîl

marvelous things

יְהוָ֖ה

Yah·weh

. לַעֲשֽׂוֹת׃

la·‘ă·śō·wṯ.

אַל־

’al-

Not

תִּֽירְאוּ֙

tî·rə·’ū

do be afraid

בַּהֲמ֣וֹת

ba·hă·mō·wṯ

– שָׂדַ֔י

śā·ḏay,

of the field –

כִּ֥י

kî

､ דָשְׁא֖וּ

ḏā·šə·’ū

are springing up ､

נְא֣וֹת

nə·’ō·wṯ

מִדְבָּ֑ר

miḏ·bār;

כִּֽי־

kî-

עֵץ֙

‘êṣ

the tree

נָשָׂ֣א

nā·śā

､ פִרְי֔וֹ

p̄ir·yōw,

תְּאֵנָ֥ה

tə·’ê·nāh

וָגֶ֖פֶן

wā·ḡe·p̄en

and the vine

נָתְנ֥וּ

nā·ṯə·nū

. חֵילָֽם׃

ḥê·lām.

their strength .

וּבְנֵ֣י

ū·ḇə·nê

Then you children

､ צִיּ֗וֹן

ṣî·yō·wn,

of Zion ､

גִּ֤ילוּ

gî·lū

וְשִׂמְחוּ֙

wə·śim·ḥū

בַּיהוָ֣ה

Yah·weh

– אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם

’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem,

כִּֽי־

kî-

נָתַ֥ן

nā·ṯan

לָכֶ֛ם

lā·ḵem

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הַמּוֹרֶ֖ה

ham·mō·w·reh

the former rain

､ לִצְדָקָ֑ה

liṣ·ḏā·qāh;

וַיּ֣וֹרֶד

way·yō·w·reḏ

and He will cause to come down

לָכֶ֗ם

lā·ḵem,

､ גֶּ֛שֶׁם

ge·šem

the rain ､

､ מוֹרֶ֥ה

mō·w·reh

the former rain ､

וּמַלְק֖וֹשׁ

ū·mal·qō·wōš

and the latter rain

. בָּרִאשֽׁוֹן׃

bā·ri·šō·wn.

in the first [month] .

וּמָלְא֥וּ

ū·mā·lə·’ū

And shall be full

הַגֳּרָנ֖וֹת

hag·go·rā·nō·wṯ

of the threshing floors

､ בָּ֑ר

bār;

וְהֵשִׁ֥יקוּ

wə·hê·šî·qū

and shall overflow

הַיְקָבִ֖ים

hay·qā·ḇîm

the vats

תִּיר֥וֹשׁ

tî·rō·wōš

. וְיִצְהָֽר׃

wə·yiṣ·hār.

and oil .

וְשִׁלַּמְתִּ֤י

wə·šil·lam·tî

So I will restore

לָכֶם֙

lā·ḵem

to you

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הַשָּׁנִ֔ים

haš·šā·nîm,

אֲשֶׁר֙

’ă·šer

､ אָכַ֣ל

’ā·ḵal

הָֽאַרְבֶּ֔ה

hā·’ar·beh,

the swarming locust

､ הַיֶּ֖לֶק

hay·ye·leq

the crawling locust ､

､ וְהֶחָסִ֣יל

wə·he·ḥā·sîl

and the consuming locust ､

､ וְהַגָּזָ֑ם

wə·hag·gā·zām;

and the chewing locust ､

חֵילִי֙

ḥê·lî

הַגָּד֔וֹל

hag·gā·ḏō·wl,

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

שִׁלַּ֖חְתִּי

šil·laḥ·tî

. בָּכֶֽם׃

bā·ḵem.

וַאֲכַלְתֶּ֤ם

wa·’ă·ḵal·tem

And You shall eat

אָכוֹל֙

’ā·ḵō·wl

､ וְשָׂב֔וֹעַ

wə·śā·ḇō·w·a‘,

and be satisfied ､

וְהִלַּלְתֶּ֗ם

wə·hil·lal·tem,

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

שֵׁ֤ם

. לְעוֹלָֽם׃

וִידַעְתֶּ֗ם

wî·ḏa‘·tem,

Then you shall know

כִּ֣י

בְקֶ֤רֶב

ḇə·qe·reḇ

in the midst

､ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙

yiś·rā·’êl

of Israel ､

אָ֔נִי

’ā·nî,

I [am]

וַאֲנִ֛י

wa·’ă·nî

and I

יְהוָ֥ה

Yah·weh

､ אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֖ם

’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem

וְאֵ֣ין

wə·’ên

and there is no

– ע֑וֹד

‘ō·wḏ;

וְלֹא־

wə·lō-

. יֵבֹ֥שׁוּ

yê·ḇō·šū

shall be put to shame .

עַמִּ֖י

‘am·mî

. לְעוֹלָֽם׃

lə·‘ō·w·lām.

וְהָיָ֣ה

And it shall come to pass

אַֽחֲרֵי־

that I will pour out

רוּחִי֙

עַל־

– בָּשָׂ֔ר

､ וְנִבְּא֖וּ

and shall prophesy ､

בְּנֵיכֶ֣ם

וּבְנֽוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם

ū·ḇə·nō·w·ṯê·ḵem;

and your daughters

זִקְנֵיכֶם֙

ziq·nê·ḵem

חֲלֹמ֣וֹת

ḥă·lō·mō·wṯ

､ יַחֲלֹמ֔וּן

ya·ḥă·lō·mūn,

shall dream ､

בַּח֣וּרֵיכֶ֔ם

ba·ḥū·rê·ḵem,

חֶזְיֹנ֖וֹת

ḥez·yō·nō·wṯ

. יִרְאֽוּ׃

yir·’ū.

וְגַ֥ם

wə·ḡam

And also

עַל־

‘al-

on

הָֽעֲבָדִ֖ים

hā·‘ă·ḇā·ḏîm

[My] menservants

וְעַל־

wə·‘al-

and on

הַשְּׁפָח֑וֹת

haš·šə·p̄ā·ḥō·wṯ;

[My] maidservants

בַּיָּמִ֣ים

bay·yā·mîm

הָהֵ֔מָּה

hā·hêm·māh,

אֶשְׁפּ֖וֹךְ

’eš·pō·wḵ

will I pour out

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

. רוּחִֽי׃

rū·ḥî.

וְנָֽתַתִּי֙

wə·nā·ṯat·tî

And I will show

מֽוֹפְתִ֔ים

mō·wp̄·ṯîm,

בַּשָּׁמַ֖יִם

baš·šā·ma·yim

in the heavens

､ וּבָאָ֑רֶץ

ū·ḇā·’ā·reṣ;

and in the earth ､

､ דָּ֣ם

dām

､ וָאֵ֔שׁ

wā·’êš,

and fire ､

וְתִֽימֲר֖וֹת

wə·ṯî·mă·rō·wṯ

. עָשָֽׁן׃

‘ā·šān.

of smoke .

הַשֶּׁ֙מֶשׁ֙

haš·še·meš

The sun

יֵהָפֵ֣ךְ

yê·hā·p̄êḵ

shall be turned

､ לְחֹ֔שֶׁךְ

lə·ḥō·šeḵ,

into darkness ､

וְהַיָּרֵ֖חַ

wə·hay·yā·rê·aḥ

and the moon

､ לְדָ֑ם

lə·ḏām;

לִפְנֵ֗י

lip̄·nê,

. בּ֚וֹא

bō·w

the coming .

י֣וֹם

yō·wm

Of day

יְהוָ֔ה

Yah·weh,

הַגָּד֖וֹל

hag·gā·ḏō·wl

. וְהַנּוֹרָֽא׃

wə·han·nō·w·rā.

､ וְהָיָ֗ה

wə·hā·yāh,

And it shall come to pass ､

כֹּ֧ל

kōl

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

יִקְרָ֛א

yiq·rā

בְּשֵׁ֥ם

bə·šêm

on the name

יְהוָ֖ה

Yah·weh

– יִמָּלֵ֑ט

yim·mā·lêṭ;

shall be saved –

כִּ֠י

kî

בְּהַר־

bə·har-

צִיּ֨וֹן

ṣî·yō·wn

וּבִירוּשָׁלִַ֜ם

ū·ḇî·rū·šā·lim

and in Jerusalem

תִּֽהְיֶ֣ה

tih·yeh

､ פְלֵיטָ֗ה

p̄ə·lê·ṭāh,

deliverance ､

כַּֽאֲשֶׁר֙

ka·’ă·šer

as

､ אָמַ֣ר

’ā·mar

יְהוָ֔ה

Yah·weh,

וּבַ֨שְּׂרִידִ֔ים

ū·ḇaś·śə·rî·ḏîm,

and Among the remnant

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

יְהוָ֖ה

Yah·weh

. קֹרֵֽא׃

qō·rê.
